While bus stops and routes are still being finalised, arrangements are well underway to have a new Lithgow bus run available and on the road from the start of Term 3 commencing Tuesday, 21 July.

The College will purchase a new 57 seat Mercedes-Benz coach fitted with the latest safety features including an Automatic Emergency Brake System and Lane Departure Warning System.

Both systems provide the operator and passengers an increased level of safety. The whole Scots All Saints College community will benefit from the new coach which can be made available for excursions, camps and weekend representative sports matches.

Active Kids Voucher

The NSW Government is helping kids get active with the Active Kids program.

The Active Kids program provides two $100 vouchers for parents, guardians and carers of school-enrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year.

Voucher 1 is valid January to December and Voucher 2 is valid July to December.

The vouchers may be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and membership costs for sport, fitness and active recreation activities.

If you wish to use an Active Kid’s voucher, you must have your active kids voucher ready when you register online.

Our new Lithgow to Bathurst College bus service will be a private, direct, safe and secure way for students to travel to and from our campuses each day without concern or needing to change buses on the way. The convenient, hassle-free journey will reduce travel time saving up to 30 minutes on public bus services which is a big advantage for students.

This decision is a direct result of popular demand and interest from families from across the region seeking a more affordable, family-focused and indeed, a more communityminded all-round College of excellence for their children in the Central West. This presents a significant opportunity to continue to develop our College, ensuring we can create the best possible learning environment for our children to be inspired and motivated to be the best they can be.

End of Term It’s hard to believe that we have come to the end of Term 2. I’d like to commend all the students on their effort and application across all areas of learning in these challenging times. Whilst we haven’t been able to have the assemblies, special events or weekend sport that we would normally have, the students have remained focussed on their learning and looked out for one another. Just a reminder that today, Thursday 25 June is the final day of term. I’d like to wish everyone a relaxing and safe break. School resumes on Tuesday 21 July.

Personal Research Projects Students have been so excited to showcase and share their learning this week. I’ve been blown away by the level of excitement amongst the students to share their personal area of interest. The students have worked hard throughout the term to get to this point.

I’ve visited each classroom this week and I’ve enjoyed watching presentations on all sorts of topics from bees to the Spanish Flu to pianos and soccer. By all reports, the students have enjoyed the opportunity to learn about their own area of interest and to have a choice in how they present their findings. Great effort everyone!

Student Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held for Kindergarten to Year 6 on Monday 27, Tuesday 28 and Wednesday, 29 July from 3:45 pm to 6:00 pm.

Interviews will be of 15 minutes in duration and will be held in the classroom.

The interviews will give you the opportunity to discuss your child’s Semester 1 Report, their achievements and any other matters or concerns you may have. Students reports were sent home with students yesterday.

UNSW ICAS COMPETITIONS Every year the University of NSW administers a range of academic competitions through the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) program. This year students in Years 2 to Year 10 at Scots All Saints College will have the opportunity to participate in the Mathematics, English and Science competitions.

There are many benefits of a child sitting an ICAS assessment. It enables teachers, parents and students to: • Identify a student’s strengths.

• Identify areas for development • Track performance as they journey through the school years.

• Obtain an independent, external view of how a student is performing.

• See how a student compares nationally.

The competitions are quite challenging and are designed to assess higher order and problem solving skills. Consequently they are well suited to students who perform at a high academic level.

Pre-Kindergarten exploring space Pre-Kindergarten have been exploring space during our STEM lessons. We have really enjoyed learning about the different planets using Storybots. We watched the NASA Space X launch to the International Space station with great excitement. Most of our construction play over the past few weeks has centred around rockets and space stations.

Pre-Kindergarten 2 Day have also been demonstrating their theatrical skills with the dramatization of some of our favourite books. We have explored The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Australian classic Wombat Stew. The children have performed with great enthusiasm and confidence.

School Holidays – returning to the 'new normal' in Term 3 At this stage, we are planning the reintroduction of many activities but are carefully considering what the best practice is moving forward. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us the opportunity to think, act, reflect, evaluate and celebrate successes. It has also given us time to identify effective new ways of ‘being’ and ‘doing’ that are more sustainable and productive for learning.

Once the four square metre rule for large internal gatherings is relaxed, we plan to reintroduce assemblies and Chapel services but the frequency and structure of these is under review.

Full details of Winter Core Team Sports can be found on page 8.

Students will begin training for their chosen sport during the Active Afternoons time after lunch on a Thursday. There will be no after school hours sport. Those children not playing a core sport in a College team that has a weekend commitment will continue to participate in an Active Afternoon activity on Thursdays.

Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews Reports were sent home with students yesterday. I encourage parents to take time to read through the report with their child and celebrate their achievements for the semester. It is also a good opportunity to discuss with your child their goals for Semester 2. Parent Teacher Interviews will take place during the first week of Term 3 for Year 7 and 8. These interviews will be via Zoom and will be with each subject teacher. Year 5 and 6 interviews will be face-to-face in the classroom with the core teacher and will take place in Week 2. Parents will have received an email this week explaining the process for booking an interview.

Donation to WIRES Year 5 students studied bushfires as part of their Term 1 Geography unit. financial assistance. The students brought in cakes and slices and the stall was held at recess time on Thursday 5 March. A total of $512.95 dollars was raised.

It was then decided that this money would be given to the local WIRES group to support the many animals that were injured in the fires and the need for medical supplies. Mrs Christie Jarrett, a local volunteer and rescuer for Central West Wires, was invited in this week to receive the donation.

The end of a term is a great time for reflection.

Looking back over Term 2, I believe there is much to be thankful for and many highlights which we should celebrate. Much has been achieved - despite the difficult circumstances in which we are all operating these days.

Our core business of teaching and learning has continued and I am grateful for the dedicated team of teachers who have worked diligently to engage our students in ‘normal lessons’ during an abnormal time. My thanks also to the many parents who have sent encouraging emails and assisted in a myriad of ways throughout the term.

Finally, my congratulations to the students who have continued to inspire us with their commitment to learning and doing their best, whatever the task at hand. I wish you all a safe and relaxed holiday.

Year 9 and Year 11 2021 Subject Selection Coming soon!

Current Year 10 parents and students will receive an email shortly outlining the process and options for selecting their subjects for Year 11 and 12.

This email will provide a short informational video and Subject Selection Handbook. Parents will also receive a unique student code to enable students and/or parents to logon and nominate their subject choices.

There is plenty of time to consider subjects with choices required by 7 August (end of week 3 Term 3).

A ‘pop-up’ Subject Selection Information Session for students will be held at school on Friday 24 July (end of Week 1, Term 3).

Year 8 parents will also receive a similar email to guide Year 9 students who are moving to the Senior School with subject selection.

Co-curricular Mr Justin Adams Director of Co-curricular Active Afternoons and Winter Core Team Sports We are pleased to announce weekend Winter Core Team Sports will resume very soon in conjunction with local sporting associations. Students will commence or continue training for their chosen team sport as part of the Active Afternoons program in Term 3. For Junior and Middle School, there will be no after school hours sports training. For some Senior School team sports, such as rugby, there will be training sessions after school some of which have already started and are working well.

A comprehensive table has been developed below. We have also included some frequently asked questions such as, how parents can use Active Kids Vouchers to subsidise the costs of registration. If you need further information please contact Head of Sport, Mr Scott Gardner (Years 9-12) or Sports Coordinator (K-8), Mrs Kay Nelson. Children not playing in a College team sport will continue to participate in an Active Afternoon activity during school hours in Term 3, as previously advised.

Frequently Asked Questions Why has the College introduced Active Afternoons during school time?

Active Afternoons has been introduced to address the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 and is already proving to be beneficial for our students to reboot physical activity, fitness and wellbeing in advance of many other schools. If students have chosen a winter team sport, training will occur at this time to maximise preparedness and develop fitness.

What does the $60 per student per term cost for Active Afternoons cover?

The $60 per student cost has been used to cover the cost of specialist instructors, new equipment and infrastructure that has been purchased and installed for the Active Afternoon sessions. For example, the installation of the Frisbee golf course, mountain bike tracks, fleet of balance bikes, new balls and equipment to align with COVID-19 requirements, table tennis tables, fitness equipment, recreational games, speakers and sound systems, orienteering equipment and so much more that is planned for the Summer months. In addition, these funds help cover the costs associated with our weekend sports program (e.g. hockey turf hire, referee fees, sports physios, trophies, non-playing member fees and affiliation fees, etc.)

Why is the local association registration fees a similar cost to 2019 with a shorter season?

Despite COVID-19 disruptions, local associations continue to have the same costs associated with maintaining facilities, organising competitions and administration. Our local associations have all reduced their fees to a degree. Unfortunately, all of the governing bodies above our local associations (Australia and State levels) have not been able to reduce their registration fees (primarily used to cover insurances). Schools and clubs are working together to support each other so that children get an opportunity to continue to play and represent their team.

Our child has signed up for a team sport (e.g. soccer, netball, hockey, rugby) but we now want to change to an Active Afternoon activity only (e.g.

Based on your preferences already provided through previous Active Afternoon choice surveys for winter sport, the College has already placed your child into nominated teams for competitions. Students and parents are reminded that if the College provides a sport in the appropriate age/standard, then students must play for the College first. Please get in touch with the Head of Sport on your campus as soon as possible to discuss.

Yes, for all netball, hockey and soccer players as these sports are governed by state bodies (Netball NSW, Hockey NSW, Football NSW). Unfortunately, no for rugby as the Independent Sports Association (ISA) competition is deemed to be a ‘school related competition’ and is therefore exempt from being included in the NSW Active Kids vouchers program.

Pursuing a career in aviation Over the past year Goma Uno, Year 12 student from Japan, has been attending flying lessons with the Central West Flying School, Bathurst, to pursue his passion of becoming a pilot.

On Satuday, 13 June Goma completed his first solo flight.

Goma continues to progress diligently through his theory and practical sessions too complete his training to obtain his pilot’s license which he will then use to transition from (high school) HSC into university and a career in aviation.

Goma’s dream is to fly for Qantas.

Participate in the upcoming UNSW ICAS Competitions Every year the University of NSW administers a range of academic competitions through the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) program.

This year students from Years 2 to Year 10 at Scots All Saints College will have the opportunity to participate in the Mathematics, English and Science competitions. There are many benefits of a child sitting an ICAS assessment. It enables teachers, parents and students to: • Identify a student’s strengths.

• Identify areas for development • Track performance as they journey through the school years.

• Obtain an independent, external view of how a student is performing.

• See how a student compares nationally.

The competitions are quite challenging and are designed to assess higher order and problem solving

skills. Consequently they are well suited to students who perform at a high academic level. Where classes are graded (e.g. Years 9 and 10) students in the highest ranked classes are strongly encouraged to participate (e.g. Year 9 and 10 students enrolled in the 5.3 Mathematics course).

Hands-on experience to prepare ewes for lambing season Year 9 Agriculture students are learning the art of crutching sheep from our wonderful farmhand, Mr Bruce Inwood, to prepare for lambing next term. Pre-lambing crutching removes wool from between the legs, around the tail and udder with one of the main benefits making suckling easier for newborn lambs. Students are getting excited to see the new additions to their on-school farm.

Bow precision!

After a successful group lesson last week, our Junior School string students have returned to 1:1 lessons with specialist instructors, Lisa and Stefan. Their confidence has improved immensely after the group lesson. Students are beginning to learn the next song in the Suzuki strings method. It is inspiring to see the faces of the students as they achieve new goals. With this progress, our students will be able to perform for their friends and family in no time!
