A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

This is the final edition of The Roar for Term 2. It has been a somewhat busy time for many of our students and teachers who have been hit by COVID-19 and then the Influenza virus. It is time for a good break with the chance to fully recover and be fit and healthy for Term 3 as we continue to move through Winter.

Nonetheless, as I noted last week, the College is really humming with so many extra-curricular activities taking place. The College has become much busier than in 2020-2021, and there is a great deal of confidence around the planning and preparation for large-scale events, such as last Friday’s Music Spectacular featuring hundreds of performers. There is more to come in Terms 3 and 4.

Planning for 2023 will commence in earnest in Term 3 as we finalise enrolments, student subject selections and the need for staff in specific areas.

It is a very exciting time as our College continues to grow.

College Council and I are very much aware of the ongoing needs of all our students, and early next term, I will release the first stage of our Master Plan for the ongoing improvements to facilities and resources for our students. The first project will be the Senior School STEM Centre!

So, until next term, well done to everyone! Have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

God knows our heart Many (many) years ago, I did a course to become a Fitness Trainer at a local gym. (Now I know, for those of you who have seen me, given my size, you’ll find that last remark hard to believe! But, yes, I once was a fitness trainer.) During my weekend studies, the Trainer from Penrith Rugby League came to speak to us – this was during the years when Penrith wasn’t very good! He talked about ‘heart rate monitors’ and how the club uses them during the Christmas Holiday season when players take a few weeks off to spend time with their families.

to the Prophet Samuel: “The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

God knows what we are like on the inside, what we are really like, so we can’t trick or deceive Him. He made us. Knows us. And, yet despite that, he wants to invite us into his family. To paraphrase the Gospel message, God says to each one of us, “Come as you are. In and through me you shall find forgiveness, love and a future.”

May you discover more of God's love, forgiveness and hope for the future during these holidays! Amen.

Each player was given a training program and a heart rate monitor. They were expected to do the training and then digitally upload their heart rate results for their coaches to monitor.

The hope was that the players could consistently train through the period, establish a great foundation for the season ahead, and spend time with their families. As the results started to come into the club, two players’ results were 'off-the-charts'. Their heart rates and, it was presumed, their fitness had significantly improved. The coaches were excited.

However, when the players returned to training, those two players' digital results did not reflect their actual fitness.

The coaches summoned both players in to find out why there was such a massive discrepancy. They discovered that neither player had done any exercise during the time away – but rather, they had laid on the couch and eaten a terrible diet. The coaches asked how their heart rate monitors had recorded such extraordinary results. The first player said he gave the monitor to his wife when she went off to her daily aerobics class. The second player said he tied it around his dog, then got in his ute and made the dog chase him around the block.

I like this story because, for me, it has a spiritual connection, which is best summed up in 1 Samuel 16:7, when Israel is looking for a new King. God says

When in French class we do as the French!

Students are more likely to use French if the tasks set for them have a real-world application, an application that they are interested in, as opposed to simply practising rote phrases out of context.

This term, Year 7 students were asked to create a dialogue in French about their families, sporting activities and other leisure activities they enjoy and then perform and film.

At one point, when students were practising in class, I realized everyone was speaking French.

C’est formidable! As that is how it should be!

Happy Holidays I would like to thank all of our wonderful students and staff for their tireless efforts throughout this term. It has been a challenging term with COVID, but everyone has managed to achieve their goals. I wish everyone a safe holiday break and some well-earned rest. I would like to thank all of the parents of our students for your ongoing support and involvement in our thriving school community.

Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews Your child will bring home their Semester 1 Report today. This report is a significant part of the communication process between school and home.

Early next term, parents will be invited in to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss their child’s report and progress.

Parent Teacher interviews for Kinder, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 6 will be face-to-face and will be conducted in Week 2 on Monday 25, Tuesday 26 and Wednesday, 27 July. Prep Wattle will have interviews on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 July.

Parent Teacher interviews for Year 4, Prep Eucalypt and Banksia will be face-to-face and will be conducted in Week 3 on Monday 1, Tuesday 3 and Wednesday, 4 August.

BMEC Music Showcase I would like to pass on a big congratulations to all of the students involved in the Music Showcase on Friday night last week. It was a wonderful celebration of our talented musicians and a tremendously entertaining evening. I would like to thank all of the staff involved in preparing the students for the event, plus the staff who were busy backstage supervising the children.

Uniform for Girls in Winter To clarify the winter uniform for girls in the Junior School. The girls in Kinder to Year 4 wear a tartan tunic and should wear the navy tights underneath.

They should not wear the over the knee socks. The Year 5 and 6 girls wear a tartan kilt and can wear either dark navy tights or navy over the knee socks.

Staff Development Day Staff have a busy day of planning and reflection this Friday. Staff will be involved in a number of sessions relating to programs we have in place, including Seven Steps to Writing Success and Reading in the K-2 classroom. We’ll also be reviewing some of the assessment data we’ve collated on students and their learning in Semester One to review our programs for the remainder of the year. Staff will also take part in their annual and mandatory child protection training and continue preparation for implementing the new K-2 English curriculum.

Lego Spike Challenge Open Afternoon Last week I forwarded off all of the work that our Lego Spike students have been doing this term.

Students did a magnificent job designing and creating a robot that aligned with the theme ‘Journey.’ I have been quite blown away by what the students have produced and the way they have collaborated and developed their ideas. They were also required to keep a digital journey of their learning. On Tuesday afternoon, students enjoyed the opportunity to show their work to their parents and friends at a little Showcase afternoon. It was a great way to celebrate all of their learning. continued page 4

The Great Platypus Survey Kreative Koalas is looking for families to get back to nature and help collect some data on the local platypus. Despite numbers being on the decline, our Kreative Koalas team want to protect and restore platypus habitats and promote responsible land use practices and water management techniques to ensure that platypus numbers remain viable.

It has been a very busy first semester, and both our students and staff are in need of a well-deserved break.

We have battled through quite a bit of ill health and had our fair share of inclement weather. We hope that the families of our College have a safe, restful, peaceful, happy and healthy break.

Year 12 – Rest, Recharge, Refocus, Catch Up and Prepare for your final term Next term will be the final or possibly 42 terms of schooling for our Year 12 students. Our main advice for them is to use the time to recharge the batteries but also to use the time wisely. Catching up on missed study and preparing for the final term of their journey through school is very important. Some of our Year 12 classes will have study seminars during the holidays, and our students are encouraged to attend these. CSU Bathurst is also running some specialised study sessions.

All of our Year 12 students will have had details about the expectations of them regarding major works, study/ revision, etc. explained to them. Most of the work is being communicated or facilitated through Canvas. Be safe, be healthy and best wishes Year 12.

Revised Date for Senior Athletics Carnival Tuesday, 30 August has been set as the revised date for the recently postponed Senior Inter House Athletics Carnival. This date is after the Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations and due dates for Major Works. We hope that our weather patterns at the end of winter are friendlier than they are at the moment.

Harbour Bridge climb Our group of International students took advantage of good weather, a long weekend, no restrictions and climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

They climbed a total of 1100 stairs up and down!

While the thought of climbing the bridge seemed a little daunting at first, they took on the experience and challenge wholeheartedly and had a good day taking in the views of Sydney. The guide was informative, reassuring and took care to explain Sydney landmark sites.

Mrs Margaret Mackay On the Monday of the long weekend, all the International students went to climb the Harbour Bridge with Mrs Mackay and our bus driver AnnMaree. It was a beautiful day, and the weather was warm and breezy. We met in the city at 8:00 am in the morning and had breakfast together. The climb was a total of three hours, but it didn’t feel as tough as we thought, particularly as our tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable about the history behind the Harbour Bridge. Some of us were a bit anxious to be doing the climb but soon discovered it was well worth it. The view up the bridge was magnificent, and we could even see the Blue Mountains from a far distance. All of us had a wonderful time at the climb and are very grateful for this experience. Thank you Mrs Mackay for arranging this memorable outing for us.

Write a Book For A day Over the fortnight leading up to the day's the students were also creative in formulating different strategies to raise money for the Kids’ Cancer Project.

They sold Mentos through the school Café, ran a lunchtime Fete and sought support from families and friends. Thank you to everyone who contributed, every dollar donated has been sent straight through to this crucial cause.

The Write a Book in a Day challenge gave twenty SASC students twelve hours to write three books.

They were driven by a desire to flex their creative muscles and to raise money for the Kids’ Cancer Project.

In total, the teams raised just over $2,300 for the Kids’ Cancer Project! What an incredible outcome!

And, as Aus Z would say, that’s a rap.

At 8:00 am they settled into their Library spaces and were handed parameter sheets that outlined some specific characters and settings that must appear in their books.

Year 7, with the requirement to include a lifeguard and sculptor, crafted a story about a competitive sandcastle sculptor. When her sandcastle was damaged by a group of nearby footy players, the community came together to create something beautiful. A tale analogous to their own Write a Book in a Day challenge, the team aptly renamed themselves ‘The Sandcastle Squad.’

Year 8 was thrown the challenge of including an Easter Bunny. With the need for an antagonist, the group shaped this normally loveable character into a villain. The tension grew when their hero became caught in the Rabbit’s Den! Year 9 was handed a parameter sheet that included a professional rapper and a goat. Their rapper, Aus Z, went to visit his Great Aunt, and was soon embroiled in the accidental release of her prized goat that knocked over her lamington cake and sprinted into the distance…

It was an incredible honour to watch all three teams tackle the challenges of the day and create final products that would make them proud. Well done!

All things Art and French

In a little bustling corner nestled on the fringe of the senior lawn is a huge pounding heart and spirit of culture and language. We don’t just sip on short blacks or ponder at Rodin sculptures, we nurture our students in the love of artistic skill, art appreciation and the procurement of one of the world’s greatest global language – French.

Yesterday, Wednesday 23 June, we esteemed the fêted artworks of many students from Year 7 through to Year 11. In French classes across the year, the group's recent introduction to French films has been instrumental as a way to cover points of the curriculum and embraced cinema; considered to be a Seventh Art. The whole school was invited to a special screening of ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ a considered choice, as this famous comic character emboldens positive core values: doing good, supporting the underdog, resisting unfairness and fighting for justice.

This day emphasised the importance of creative

thinking and an all-round education for our students.

Success at school, university and life are more readily accomplished for students who have access to significant cultural understanding, socialisation within the arts, culture, an appreciation of foreign languages and the provision to be being able to practice these.

Year 12 Economic Enterprise Year 12 Geography undertook an excursion to Renzaglia Wines located near O’Connell as part of their study of global viticulture including a focus study on a local economic enterprise.

Mark Renzaglia shared his deep knowledge and guided students through the various processes involved including: the choice of vines, soil nutrients, slope, aspect, water and methods of managing pests. Mark discussed his distribution strategies and gave great insights into marketing and sales.

The students will use this information to form responses to their final assessment as well as in their Trial and HSC Examinations.

I would like to thank Mark Renzaglia for hosting and also Mrs Helen Jones for accompanying the class.

Space Invasion Year 7 2022 Installation Art Challenge In the modern world where so many different art forms have been born, developed, explored and even forgotten over time, almost no other manifestation of art is so impressive and instantly mesmerizing as installation art. When you walk into an expanse and the space around you is actually a part of the artwork, the viewer becomes part of the art.

Year 7 were given the task of crafting more than a traditional painting or sculpture. They were engaged on multiple levels, activating their senses to experience art in a new way; touch, sound, smell as well as vision were explored to convey an artistry of installations.

The focus was centered on their ideas and the impact of it, rather than the quality of a finished product.

Usually, installation art is a purely temporary work of art, but its impact, message and the notion behind it will remain forever on their young minds.

House Monologue Competition

Congratulations to all students involved in the house monologue competition. The event was a huge success with students performing high quality work. In the junior division the winner was Mia Miller representing Cuthbert house. Second was Cowan followed by Mawson, Dunlop, and Booth.

The senior division was won by Emily Brown from Cuthbert followed by Cowan, Mawson, Booth, and Dunlop. I want to thank the judges Dylan Boniface and Mr Grace.

Rugby Match Report Following on from several strong performances, the 1st XV hosted Chevalier College on Saturday, seeking a third straight win. Looking for a fast start, SASC stretched Chevalier early, allowing Angus Parsons to glide through the defence untouched for an opening score. It wasn’t long before Chevalier hit back with their own score after several phases before SASC really faced their challenge.

Like many of life’s battles, the real challenge came from our own indiscipline rather than the opposition. A yellow card for repeated infringements at the breakdown followed minutes later by another yellow for a tip tackle left the Lions with 13 players versus 15 to defend with.

Whilst the discipline initially let us down, the heart and resilience did not waver, the boys managing to hold out Chevalier for one yellow card period, even scoring their next try whilst down to 14 men. After long-awaited possession and territory, Will Munro crashed over in the corner following quick hands from a scrum. With both players now returned to the field it seemed like SASC was about to regain its composure.

It was a great day of rugby across all age grades with the U13s continuing their strong performances, the U14s toughing out a fantastic game against a strong Chev team, and the U15s falling agonisingly short of beating Central Coast in an absolute thriller going down to the final play. I would also like to highlight the amazing performances of our student referees, Tim Anderson (Year 10) and Rudi Schwartz (Year 9) in an impressive refereeing debut. We were also privileged to have former international referee Mr Nathan Pearce referee our 1st XV and what a learning experience it was for the boys.

The boys in blue extended their lead with another try, this time Guy Neill making a strong carry from a lineout to allow Nick Betts to cross the line. The drama was not over, though; errors in possession led to more time under defensive pressure and a third yellow card for team indiscipline. A second try for Chevalier in the corner arrived soon after as SASC took a slim lead into halftime, having spent much of it with a numbers disadvantage.

Stern words and encouragement at halftime focused on maintaining possession and building pressure in attack. It was, however, Chevalier who started the second half with a bang, exploiting their one-man advantage from a scrum to score under the posts. With a full contingent back on the field, the game was no less of a contest.

The forwards were beginning to assert their authority at scrum time and with some combative carries. This possession gave Will Stanmore a chance to make a scintillating break from inside his own half to accelerate, step, and swerve his way to the try line before Chev created an overlap to score their fourth try. With the Scots All Saints holding a two-point lead, the game became a tight and tense affair, with neither team maximising their opportunities. Until the final play of the game where quick thinking down the short side gave Will Munro the chance to step inside two players to score and set up the celebrations on the sideline. A relief after three yellow cards and a fine display of resilience.

From the All Saints' College archives

HORSE RIDING AND SCHOOL Following the most recent success of the Scots All Saints’ College Equestrian Team, who competed at the annual Coonabarabran Horse Expo, we can reflect on the many other events where Equestrian teams from the schools in the past competed. The Coonabarabran Expo (also known as the North-Western Equestrian Expo) was a regular event in the Equestrian team calendar. The riders recall the week as being most memorable despite the many times they had to deal with the inclement winter weather and the distance travelled. Other events recorded in the Schools history were Royal Bathurst Show, the Sydney Royal, the Equestrian NSW State Interschool Championships, the Blayney Show and even a homegrown event the All Saints’ College Combined Training, Dressage and Showjumping Day where local schools were invited to attend. There was a regular annual polocrosse competition held at Stannies and more recent show jumping competition at The Scots School. There were many individual champions crowned at these events, and the different Equestrian Teams were frequently successful in the team competitions.

On 26 October 1973, the Duke of Edinburgh came out to award the Gold D of E Medals to a number of Marsden Girls, and in our archives, there is a photo of the Duke inspecting some of the girls on their horses on the school grounds.

When Marsden merged with All Saints’ College in 1977, a number of the girls from Marsden came with their horses as horse riding at the school was an extracurricular activity. This continued at All Saints’ as many of the students from rural areas had their own horses.

Over time paddocks, round yards, stables and tack rooms were erected to accommodate the program, and riding instructors were parents, volunteers, teachers or employed personnel.

Our opposition from Shire Christian School in Sydney argued the affirmative case for the topic ‘That we should have a quota for Indigenous athletes in the Olympics’.

Advocating for the negative case, Scots All Saints presented a series of thoughtful and well-considered arguments demonstrating excellent general knowledge and a nuanced understanding of complex social issues. Shire Christian emerged victorious at the conclusion of the debate by the narrowest of margins and our debaters can be very proud of how close they came to appearing in the Final of the competition.
