Out and about with the Headmaster Mr David Gates

I thoroughly enjoyed joining students, parents and staff at a number of wonderful College occasions over the last week: • The Cattle Team Presentation Dinner on Thursday night was a great celebration of exceptional achievement for our students. It was good to honour the team, Mrs Dawes and the parent helpers who make this outstanding educational opportunity available to our students. Their successes at Blayney Show, Bathurst Royal and Sydney Royal are nothing short of amazing. Well done.

• The Junior and Middle School Disco on Friday night was great fun.

The students and staff enjoyed dressing up for the ‘Red Carpet Disco’ and the dance moves were well and truly on display thanks to the lead up work with the Footsteps Dance Company. Thank you to the FOJAM Committee for feeding the students with the provision of the barbecue.

• On Saturday I thoroughly enjoyed watching a great deal of sport with hockey, netball and rugby matches filling my day. I was impressed with what I saw: the teamwork, school spirit and enjoyment even at zero degrees at 8:30 am! Sport is a vital part of what we do at the College and is incredibly valuable to the development of our students.

• The Highland Jazz Night on Saturday was exceptional. Thank you to the Friends of Pipes and Drums for all your work and to the students who performed. We are blessed at Scots All Saints College to have so many talented musicians.

The Highland Jazz Night showcased our Pipes and Drums under the leadership of Bandmaster Gill MacKenzie and Drums Instructor Millaine Longmore, our Highland Dancers under the tutelage of Mrs Kim Durie and the Big Band under the baton of Mr Jon Clipsham. It was a particular privilege for me to be able to honour our Year 12 musicians who have served the College so faithfully and well with their talents during their time at the College, many for six years and some for more.

• The Literature Festival was an opportunity for ‘rich’ learning as students across the College engaged with authors and participated in writing workshops this week. I wish to thank Ms Cate Mitchell, the Library and teaching staff who organised and worked with the students and authors on this wonderful educational event.

Final Term Dates for the 2020 academic year have just been emailed to all parents. Please note that the dates vary slightly from the indicative dates published late last year. It is our strong preference that all students are present until the last day of each term unless important family celebrations warrant application for leave. With the exception of Term 3, each term finishes earlier than the Friday. This enables Boarding students to access travel on the day after term concludes, maintaining the validity of the learning environment until the last day of term.

The Scots All Saints College inaugural Gold Lion Ball will be held on Saturday, 10 August 2019 at the Bathurst Goldfields, Mt Panorama. This will be an outstanding occasion and one not to be missed. The Pipes and Drums will be performing, led by Pipes and Drums Master Gill MacKenzie. They will be joined by the College Big Band, led by Director of Music, Mr Jon Clipsham and our Highland Dancers led by Mrs Kim Durie.

Other features of the evening will be the presentation of the Haggis in true Scottish gusto and dance music

The Gold Lion Ball presents an excellent opportunity for parents and friends of the College to meet together for an entertaining night out.

You can catch up with some of your friends to enjoy the festivities, the music and the Pipes and Drums Band, and simply have a great night out dancing and celebrating our wonderful community.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

White Card Training The Careers office has been very busy over the past few weeks with many guest speakers, parent events and excursions to Universities. The exciting news is the upcoming launch of our inaugural Work Experience program for all of Year 10 starting from next Monday, 24 June.

Work Experience – Year 10 Throughout Term 2, Year 10 Careers lessons have been focused on how to apply for a job. This has extended to the simplest but ever so important first impressions made with email etiquette, phone call ‘cold calling’ techniques and written requests and applications. The students have researched different types of jobs and from this were encouraged to find possible work experience positions for the end of term. The work experience opportunity was not compulsory.

Year 10 took to the task with great gusto, resulting in ALL of the students finding placements.

The students will be literally all over the state with an incredibly vast array of experiences. We will have students experiencing what it will be like to be a Vet, Doctor, Physiotherapist, Lawyer, builder, archaeologist, mechanic, journalist, pharmacist, surveyor, engineer, lifeguard, chef, real estate agent, publications designer and teacher.

This program would not be possible without the generous support of our local community opening their doors to our students and the parents supporting and encouraging their children to step out of their comfort zone and just try something! I am personally very excited for next week and look forward to all the wonderful stories and possible career leads that may result from this. Good luck Year 10! Well done to the forty students who successfully completed their white card training. This is a very useful qualification that gives you access to a wide range of job opportunities. Many think that this is just needed by tradespeople but it is for anyone who needs to access a work site with multiple trades, including surveyors, architects, landscapers, fencers, archaeologist and even owner builders. We will run another training day in Term 3.

University of Western Sydney – School of Medicine and Allied Health visit, Campbelltown Campus Last week, 19 students and myself were invited to attend the UWS U-Day and see firsthand their stateof-the-art, purpose-built medical training facilities.

They then chose what information sessions they would like to attend depending on their area of interest and possible study path. Lunch was then provided before we were taken to their Clinical School attached to Campbelltown Hospital. We would like to thank Nathan Rollinson, WSU Community Engagement Officer from Bathurst Rural Clinical School for making the day possible. We would also like to thank Nathan and WSU for their continued support of our students, who are given amazing guidance and access to academic staff.

UAC Parent information night Over 100 parents and students braved a cool winter evening to attend the 'Demystifying Uni Application' night. We heard from Trudy Noller who is the Community Engagement Manager for UAC. Trudy outlined the UAC application process and enlightened us about ATARS and scaling. The evening was well received, creating a platform for informed discussion around the dinner table!

Red Carpet Disco Junior and Middle School

Last Friday night Junior and Middle School students attended the Footsteps 'Red Carpet' Disco.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit the dance moves learnt earlier in the week during specialised dance lessons.

It was a successful night topped off by a great sausage sizzle and students will have many long lasting memories.

We extend a warm welcome for our boarding families

INVITATION Mock Trial Team victorious again The Scots All Saints College Mock Trial team continued their unbeaten run in the statewide competition at Cootamundra last Friday.

They were declared resounding winners by the presiding magistrate Mr David Miller, successfully defending their client against Cootamundra Sacred Heart Central School.

The Mock Trial case alleged a defendant had destroyed a property in Coogee by burning it down.

The defence team successfully argued the case could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The barristers in this round were Simi Atluri and Robert Jeffries, with Oscar Stocks as solicitor.

Both Morgan Watts and Callum Duncan-Keen were witnesses and Jack Van Yzendoorn was court officer.

The team was supported at Cootamundra Court House by team member Taylah Cooper and the school's Mock Trial coach Ms Christine Sams.

Now celebrating four wins in a row, the team is on track to make the knockout rounds of the competition as one of the final 64 teams in the state.

Thanks go to the team's consulting solicitor Ms Fiona Sams, of Bathurst, who has shared her legal expertise with the Scots All Saints College team. We also thank teacher Mr David Pike who has kindly assisted with some of the team's preparation.

Cattle Team Dinner 2019 The annual Scots All Saints College Cattle Team Dinner was held last Thursday night. It was a great night where we said our farewells to our fabulous Year 12 team leaders – Rosie Webb, Bailey Ryan, Elizabeth Woodhouse, Jake Cranston and Stephanie Arpasi who have all been members of the school cattle team since Year 7 and have been wonderful team leaders and mentors.

Will Mitchell and Zoe Stuart were late additions to the team but were valuable assets!

We also thanked our wonderful parent helpers for the endless support. Brett Cranston, Louise Warry, Lesley Kidd, Mark Hodges, Shane Ryan, Leigh Scott and Sue Webb have been wonderful supporters and have given up many hours of their time to assist our cattle team. The cattle team could not do what they do without them.

We are blessed to have Phoebe Reynolds who comes to volunteer her time and help with the cattle team and our wonderful farm hand, Bruce Inwood who gives endless hours of assistance and support to the team.

STEM at Scots All Saints What is STEM? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

STEM curriculum blends those subjects in order to teach '21st Century skills', or tools students need to have if they wish to succeed in the 'workplace of the future'.

The idea is that in order to be prepared for jobs and compete with students from different parts of the world, students here in Australia need to be able to solve problems, find and use evidence, collaborate on projects, and think critically.

Skills, the thinking goes, that are taught in those subjects.

Still, STEM can be hard to define. It’s such a popular term that it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

Although the science (biology, chemistry, etc.) and math (algebra, calculus, etc.) parts of the abbreviation might be easy to figure out, the technology and engineering parts might be less clear.

Technology includes topics such as computer programming, analytics, and design. Engineering can include topics like electronics, robots, and civil engineering.

The key term, when talking about STEM, is integration. STEM curriculum intentionally melds these disciplines. It’s a blended approach that encourages hands-

on experience and gives students the chance to gain and apply relevant, 'real world' knowledge in the classroom.

This past semester Year 7 and 8 here at Scots All Saints College have been working on a unit called Digital Technologies during their Mandatory Technology lessons. The focus of the unit is to develop and empower attitude towards digital technologies, use abstractions to represent and decompose realworld problems, and implement and evaluate digital solutions.

Doing things – being adventurous, playing sport, swimming at the beach, travelling to new places and watching movies.
