Aquaponics – Salting Freshwater Fish Last Wednesday evening, like many of you, I was lucky enough to take a look at the new Innovation Centre on the West Campus. Amongst all the exhibits, I was particularly interested in the aquaponics set-up. I was motivated by self-interest, as many years ago I had spent a lot of money setting up an aquaponics structure only to have it fail a few years later. Indeed, whenever my wife hears the word ‘Aquaponics’ she just rolls her eyes at me.

In hindsight, my failure was based on poor advice.

Before investing in my aquaponics system I read several books and attended a week-long Aquaponics workshop, which featured two presenters. During the workshop, I took copious notes and followed the advice given. What I didn’t realise is that the presenters did not agree with each other’s approach.

So when I left the course I bought a system and 100 Silver Perch (a fresh-water fish). I was told on the course that you should ‘salt’ each perch to get rid of any diseases before you place it in the system. Crazy advice, I know, but I had been told by an expert. As I was salting them, my wife told me that it was a dumb idea. Since she had not done the course, I told her that she didn’t know what she was talking about. And well … it turns out she was right and the advice I had

received from the workshop was wrong. Every fish in the system died within the first 24hours. In the ensuing months, I kept following the workshop’s advice, only to discover through experience that much of it was wrong.

Years later I met one of the presenters (the good one). I told him about my salting failure and other such experiences. And he agreed that it was bad advice, but he had not wanted to say anything publically to upset the other presenter (who was his business partner at the time).

As we travel through life, there are many people and organisations that are happy to offer advice about how we should live. Indeed, the spiritual marketplace is flooded with many opinions and many who claim to speak for God or some other divine power. So how does a person find truth amongst the chaotic noise and not end up following bad advice – such as salting freshwater fish? I would suggest getting back to the original source – and for Christianity, that is the Bible.

Christianity stands or falls on the truth and evidence of what was written down almost 2000 years ago in the Scriptures. The Bible is not just a historical record of past events, but it is also a personal love letter written by God to his creation, pointing to his son Jesus as the one who saves, and can safely guide us through this life into a perfect relationship with him in the Kingdom to come. I would encourage you to read one of the four gospels – it will only take a couple of hours. The time you invest in the activity will most likely change your life.

As the old Christian cliché goes: “God still speaks to those who take the time to listen.” Amen

HICES Debating Round Three Last Tuesday, 1 June, Scots All Saints College played host to Round Three of the HICES Debating Competition. Mrs Jo Nicholls and Campus West (Saints) welcomed debaters from Kinross Wolaroi School, Macquarie Anglican Grammar School and Blue Mountains Grammar School for the Junior and Middle division debates, while Campus East (Scots) played host to the Senior and Open debaters. The topics debated were wide ranging, with the younger students grappling with the concepts surrounding mental health and homework while the older students engaged with the issues around social media and credibility.

Innovation Centre opening The open night of our new Innovation Centre was a very special night for the whole school.

The Year 5 and Year 9 teams didn’t debate due to a bye. The Year 6 team went down valiantly to Blue Mountains Grammar School while the Year 7 and 8 teams both scored convincing wins over Blue Mountains Grammar School and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School, respectively. Year 10 endured a loss in a close contest with Blue Mountains Grammar School while Year 11 and Year 12 both emerged victorious from their encounters with Blue Mountains Grammar School and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School.

All enjoyed a great day of debating and Mrs Nicholls and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those students who gave their time to assist in time keeping and chairing duties on the day. We would also like to acknowledge the work of Mr Maher and Mrs Jurd in assisting with adjudication of the debates. We look forward to the final round of preliminary debates next week at Kinross Wolaroi School where we will learn if any of our teams will progress to the next stage of competition.

Week of Innovation What a week! Junior School students had a fantastic time last week as we hosted Lumination and Bricks for Kids in our Innovation Centre. With Bricks for Kids, Prep students were responsible for a Safari Park, Kinder and Stage 1: 2D Mosaic Building and 3D buildings whilst Stage 2 built motorized amusement park rides with technic kits. The rides looked fantastic on the launch night when they were all swinging in action. Students also enjoyed the opportunity to explore and experiment in the augmented and virtual reality worlds with several sessions with Lumination. I hope that you all enjoyed the opportunity to look around the Innovation Centre on Wednesday night and were able to try out some of the exciting activities on offer.

Literature Festival Students are looking forward to the Literature Festival next week. Our Junior School students will engage in a range of activities lead by prominent authors and illustrators including Tohby Riddle, Ursula Dubosarsky and Andrew Daddo. It should be a great week!

Cross Country Congratulations to all of our Junior School students who took part in the recent HICES Cross Country Carnival. A special mention to Jake Kearney and Amelia Craft who will represent the HICES Association and our College at the New South Wales Combined Independent Schools Primary Cross Country Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park on Thursday 10 June where they will compete against children from other Independent Schools’ Associations. A wonderful achievement!

Footsteps Fluro Glow Disco The team from Footsteps returned to Scots All Saints College today for two days of dance lessons and our annual disco. The Junior School disco will be held on Friday 4 June between 5:30-7:00 pm in the Bickerdike.

The Middle School Disco will follow from 7:15-8:45 pm.

Our Year 8 leaders decided on the theme ‘Fluro Glow’ so hopefully all of our students are dressed in their ‘fluro best’ and ready for a great night out.

Being optimistic can empower students to persevere and help them get on top of challenges and better manage any difficulties that life might throw at them.

The opposite of optimism is pessimism, which involves expecting failure, anticipating bad outcomes or a tendency to take a gloomy view of things.

Optimistic thinking contributes to getting along with others and having good physical and mental health. Optimistic thinking is something that can be taught and is a key part of our Bounce Back program that we use in the Junior School. One simple activity you can do at home is ‘What went well and why?’ All you need to do for this activity is ask your child/ children when they get home ‘what went well today and why?’ This activity gives students a sense of control and a belief that if things went well today, they can again tomorrow and beyond as well.

A friendly reminder that Thursday 17 June is the final day of Term 2.

Friday 18 June is a pupil free day.

Preparatory School news

Personal Research Project This week, our Year 2-4 students should be preparing to present their findings to their peers. Students can choose how they present their findings. It could be written, visual or digital! Kindergarten and Year 1 should be recording their findings on the template provided by their teacher. Next week, they will prepare to present their findings to their peers.

All students will present what they have learned in Week 9. If they have made something physical like a diorama or 3D model, they will need to bring it into the classroom and teachers will set up an area for display. If a student has prepared their learning via a digital format, they could email it to their teacher or upload on Seesaw.

I’m looking forward to seeing lots of awesome projects on display in Week 9.

Innovation Centre continues to Develop

Though some students prefer indoor activities, we are encouraging the Year 6 students to spend more time outside and being active – and, yes, the very lively games of handball around the Middle School definitely count as time well spent outside!

This week there has been a great deal of work being done in the Innovation Centre installing the audio visual equipment. As we continue to equip and use this space it will evolve into a very effective and engaging teaching and learning environment.

Middle School Disco All Middle School students are invited to the Footsteps Disco on Friday 4 June in the Bickerdike Centre. The theme for the Disco Fluro Glow which means wear your brightest colours.

Prep to Year 4 – 5.30 – 7:00 pm Years 5 to 8 – 7.15 – 8:45 pm Parents will be required to pick up their children from the door.

Middle School Inter-House Athletics Carnival Our Middle School Inter-House Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 11 June. Students can wear their sports uniform to school with their House shirt.

Mr Chris Jackman, Head of Campus/Director of Middle School Stage 3 Report Over the term, Year 6 have been learning about the links between healthy eating, balancing their time between indoor and outdoor activities and wellbeing.

The students have been encouraged to keep a journal of their eating habits and tracking how much time they are spending on outdoor activities. Leading up to the colder winter months which are often more comfortable when spent inside, it is timely to consider the benefits to our health and happiness just by getting outdoors. Studies indicate that, in general, we

Stage 4 Reports Launch week This past week the year 7 and 8 students have had a preview of what the new Innovation Centre will offer them and future students over the coming months and years. The Innovation center was setup for three main experiences this week. During school time, the students worked with the Lumination company and the Bricks 4 Kids group. On Wednesday evening a lot of our stage 3 and 4 students helped show case the new Centre to parents, friends of the school, and interested community members. continued page 7

On the Opening night, the students demonstrated technologies such as 3D printing and design, virtual reality, Aqua culture, robotic farming, Sphero coding, and sound and media production.

The Lumination group demonstrated a version of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) that the students will be engaging with to enhance their learning opportunities across all subjects. The students specifically worked on building and designing in a Virtual workspace and then sharing their creations will fellow students. This was also linked in with the new 3D printer that the school has purchased in that everything that the students create in the virtual world can also be printed.

The Bricks 4 Kids focused on the students using the Engineering Design process in developing creative solutions to a given problem and then building a possible solution to the stated problem. The students in teams had to agree on a solution and then assign roles to all members so as to best manage their time in completing their agreed build with Lego blocks.

Year 7 and 8 students have had an incredibly busy, creative and productive fortnight. Their bodies were challenged by the cross-country carnival and their minds were challenged by Lumination and Bricks 4 Kids activities as part of the exciting launch of the Innovation Centre. Both of these pursuits highlight the importance of persistence, which has been the focus of the Year 8 Achieve program in pastoral care. Not everyone will be an Olympic athlete or a creative genius, but with determination, courage and unwillingness to accept defeat, students will always achieve their best.

We encourage everyone to dig deep and focus their energies as they complete tests and assessments in preparation for their reports, which will be issued at the end of term.

This week Year 8 have enjoyed using VR headsets to immerse themselves in the world of Sea Prayer: a 360 illustrated film by award-winning novelist Khaled Hosseini. This experience has enabled them to consider the communication options and storytelling possibilities open to them as they advance their technical skills.

There will be plenty of opportunity for the students to kick up their heels and show off their best fluro fashion flair on the dance floor on Friday night at the Junior and Middle School Disco after receiving lessons from Footsteps Dance Company at the end of the week.

What a busy fortnight it has been with music recitals, Bell Shakespeare production, a Year 9 and 10 lunch hosted by our wonderful international students, crosscountry, debating, UN Evatt competition and the athletics carnival. We have plenty to look forward to, including the Equestrian Team competing in Coonabarabran, the Music, Art and Drama (MAD) evening on Friday and Saturday evening and the Literature Festival. It is great to see the students so engaged in the many activities on offer.

Stage 5 Reports and Year 10 Exams Half Yearly reports will be emailed on Thursday 17 June. A reminder that Year 10 commence on Tuesday 15 June with English (90 minutes) and Science (75 minutes), then continue on Wednesday 16 June with Mathematics (90 minutes) and History (60 minutes).

Stage 6 Study Break The upcoming mid-year break should be considered as a study break as Trial Exams start in Week 5 and Year 11 exams in Week 8. The students will be given more information over the coming weeks on how to best incorporate an effective study routine around essential rest and relaxation. I will run a structured study session in the Cameron Library on Monday 21 June, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Furthermore, Bathurst Library will be delivering three HSC study support sessions over June with the help of the Rural Education Support Network (RESN) - a not-for-profit organisation of top achieving prior HSC students https://www.resn.org.au/. Students must register and are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity.

Each pair represented a allocated country: Akaal Arora and Jacquilin Ismay - UNITED KINGDOM, Charlotte Bertwistle and Annabel Rennie - FRANCE, Emily Brown and Ella Kay - NORWAY, Luke Woodhead and Harrex Upston - USA, Chelsea Stocks and Meike Willis MEXICO. This was a fantastic experience and hopefully can be replicated next year. A group of students have also applied to for the Bathurst Youth Council and are awaiting the announcement of successful applicants.

These jerseys symbolise the final few months the students have left with us at the College, with many Year 12 students taking a reflective moment upon receipt of their jersey last week. It is wonderful to see them coming together as a cohort, supporting each other along the way. In regards to wearing the jerseys, Year 12 are reminded of the rules in regarding time and place – they can be worn every day at school, they are not to be worn to and from school on public transport; they are not to be worn with their uniform downtown, nor to chapel and assembly.

Another exciting moment for Year 12 is the re-opening of the common room. Freshly painted, carpeted and furnished, this space now has seating for 43 students with the removal of the lockers. The new kitchenette will arrive shortly, providing facilities to make a cup of tea, warm lunch in a microwave or sandwich press and store food in the fridge. Congratulations to the Common Room committee for making this proposal become a reality for all to enjoy.

As the end of term approaches quickly, Year 9 and 10 are busy with lots of subject assessments. Year 10 also have the Half Yearly tests in week 9 that they are encouraged to prepare for as part of the homework and revision program. Currently, there are many Stage 5 students at the North West Equestrian Expo with Mrs Dawes and we wish these students luck as there has been a significant amount of preparation for this

With the end of term fast approaching, we will again be working with our seniors to put into place study strategies for the upcoming break. This is an important holiday break for our students to make the most of this non renewable resource – TIME!! While encouraging all students to take a needed break, it is important to keep some structure and routine over this three-week period. Remembering that the Trial HSC exams are in Week 5 and 6 of Term 3 and Year 11 End of Prelim Exams in Week 8 and 9.

CWA Public Speaking Competition Last week five students from the Middle School competed in the 2021 CWA Public Speaking Competition held in Orange.

Students who competed were: Year 5 – Twiggy Thompson Year 6 – Sybilla Chapman Year 7 – Grayson Jacobsen Year 8 – Chido Mutyiri and Oscar Yordanoff The students performed well in this competitive environment and should be proud of their achievements and representing our school.

Particular congratulations to Oscar Yordanoff and Sybilla Chapman who received Highly Commended awards. Grayson Jacobsen placed first in the Year 7/8 section with his speech about ‘My Land My Life’.

We wish Grayson good luck as he progresses to the next round of the CWA competition to take place in Trundle in June.

If you’re a kid who enjoys running, jumping and throwing things long distances, Scots All Saints is like paradise right now as we’re in the thick of our Cross Country and Athletics season.

So far it’s been awesome Mawson who has won big on sides of Bathurst, leaving the competition in a cloud of early Winter fog with some impressive carnival wins.

Cross Country Our recent Junior and Middle School Cross Country Carnival was run and won by you guessed it, Mawson. Our friends in Orange finished first in an incredible six of 12 races. Here’s how the points score finished up: 1. Mawson – 137 2. Booth – 99 3. Dunlop – 96 4. Cuthbert – 91 5. Cowan – 76 Thanks to the magic of Microsoft Word, I’ve made a table to showcase our amazing winners and runners up.

From there, our top runners went on to compete at HICES Cross Country last Monday at Blue Mountains Grammar. In our first year in Division 1, our team performed incredibly well, with four students making it through to the HICES team. They will now compete at the CIS Cross Country Championships next Thursday.

Fun fact #2: Scots All Saints has the honour of hosting the HICES Cross Country next year!

Yesterday our top Year 7 – 12 runners represented WAS at the AICES Cross Country carnival at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. They didn’t run against horses, just fellow human beings. It was an awesome event with four of our runners making it through to compete at the CIS Cross Country Championships next week. Congratulations and good luck to Emily Bennett, Miller Rivett, Todd Nelson and Max Hemsworth.

Senior School Athletics Carnival Last Thursday we held our Senior School Athletics Carnival on Campus East in freezing conditions. In fact, a penguin asked to borrow my jacket. I said “get outta here, Penguin!”

We are almost there!

Our Literature Festival commences on Monday and a snapshot summary of our presenters is listed to the right.

There will be a selection of titles available for sale and author signings over the three days for students to purchase if they wish. A list of the titles and prices will be sent home to the students on Friday.

As part of our Literature Festival preparation, we ran a photo competition across both campuses with the winners to be announced in next week’s The Roar.

Phillip Gwynne

Over a thirty-year career in the Australian entertainment industry, Andrew Daddo has been many things: a TV presenter primarily with travel shows, golf, two Olympics, news, current affairs and MTV to his credit. He has acted on stage and in film, speaks to corporates and school kids, and maybe best of all, is the author of 28 books for young people.

Kirsty Eagar grew up on her mum’s central Queensland cattle property, and spent most holidays at the beach with her dad. After completing a Master’s degree in Economics, she worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of England before changing careers, wanting a life where she could surf every day.

Phillip Gwynne was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and grew up in rural areas in Victoria and South Australia. He came to professional writing later in life and wrote his first novel at the age of 35. His award-winning novel Deadly Unna won Children’s Book of the Year in 1998 and was made into a feature film Australian Rules in 2002. Deadly Unna also won him the 1999 Children’s Peace Literature Award.

James Knight James was raised in Gunnedah, country NSW. He began his media career as a radio journalist in another bush town, Dubbo, in 1988.

Since then he has been incredibly lucky to have worked in many far-flung places across the world. James says that his experiences have shown him that people make the place.

He feels privileged to meet people, listen to them, and be trusted by them to tell their stories responsibly.

Ursula Dubosarsky Ursula Dubosarsky was born in Sydney, Australia in 1961, the third child in a family of writers. From the time she was first able to read, at age six, she wanted to be a writer. She wrote stories and poems and puppet plays all through primary and high school. Ursula is currently the Children’s Laureate and a frequent visitor in libraries, schools and festivals around the world, talking about books and reading, and teaching children and adults the art of creative writing.

Tohby Riddle Tohby Riddle is an award-winning writer, illustrator, cartoonist, designer and sometime editor based in Sydney.

He has written and illustrated numerous well-loved picture books; written a young adult novel; was the cartoonist for Good Weekend for nearly ten years; and is a former editor of The School Magazine, a literary magazine for children published by the NSW Department of Education.

THE SCOTS MUSEUM

As part of the maintenance of the heritage of its past, the College has established two museums to preserve the heritage of The Scots School and All Saints College. The Scots museum has been operational since 2019. Plans for an inauguration ceremony were interrupted by COVID-19 restrictions, but the Museum has opened for inspection.

It is located in what was the kitchen for Karralee and the old Dining Hall. Old houses often had the kitchen as a separate building on the grounds that it was the part of the house most likely to catch fire. After the Dining Hall was built—it celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year— it became the Staff Room, conference room, clothing shop and cadet store.

The basis of the Museum collection was the items kept by Mrs Betty Ives during her 54 year association with The Scots School. Several other items have been donated by former students over the years, and many more appeared when people vacated long-occupied offices when the schools were integrated in 2018.

photographs of their fathers on display, and they sounded much like much older former students as they discussed students who have moved on, or reminisced about the late 2010s at Scots.

Some guests at the social function held for parents at the beginning of 2020 visited the Museum. The Class of 1970 Old Boys visited it only days before the corona virus put a stop to such things. With the overall situation being much safer, there have been some visits by former students passing through Bathurst, and the 1946 'Karralee Boys' spent some time in there during their reunion.

The Museum also has an educational function. Ms Sams brought the Year 10 Elective History class for a visit late last year, and this week the Year 5 group paid a visit. The former TSS Junior School people were glad to make the re-acquaintance with Scotty the Bear, some found
