Prayer and Coffee in the Chapel – 25 June @ 9:00 am As a College Community we have much to be thankful for as we continue to navigate the many changes caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic.

To this point, our community has stayed healthy, our young people have enjoyed continuity of education, our dedicated and creative members of staff have been extremely agile in adopting new ways of operating and the support of our parents has been exceptional!

With the easing of restrictions many gatherings are now permissible.

As these restrictions ease, we will continue to advise all parents so that we can ‘reboot’ together. You will have heard about a return to community sport. Yes, this is possible but how each sports association will open up is still being determined. More on this later.

As usual, Denise Weeks will host this time together so if you can, drop the kids at school and join us for prayer, coffee and a chat. It will be great to start to get together again giving thanks to God for the many blessings we have received and to seek His guidance as we continue to work through this very challenging time.

ISA Rugby Division 2 Update The ISA has updated details of the proposed Division 2 Rugby Draw for Term 3, 2020.

From 1 July 2020, as we transition to Level C, full training and competition, Rugby Union has been reinstated.

We are excited for the Rugby community and the opportunity for the students to finally reboot their season. These fixtures are non-competition games.

The updated draw which extends from 25 July to 5 September, allows the provision for the College to incorporate a regional training day or trial fixture, three home and three away fixtures.

In order to ensure a safe transition to sport in Term

3, ISA, in consultation with participating schools, will implement strategies to reduce COVID-19 risk and disease transmission. The College is currently developing a checklist of ‘agreed protocols’ regarding the management of game day. This checklist will be implemented to educate players and all officials and staff involved re: general hygiene, school and ISA protocols.

The students at training will still maintain awareness of the evolving COVID-19 environment and align current practices with informed decisions for athlete and community safety.

Performing Arts Academy news Looking back on a unique Term, I am encouraged by the creativity and passion of the staff and students in the Performing Arts Academy. The recording studio has been a great place for physical distancing with students working around the clock to generate scores of compositions, which I am sure you are enjoying on our website and social media. Our Senior music students have thrived using this modern learning space for selfexpression. We will continue to release a composition each week for the remainder of the year. They can be listened to here.

Another pleasing thing this term has been the progression of our Junior School students who continue to impress us with their fiddle playing. Each week 38 students from Pre-K-4 enjoy a challenging 1:1 lesson with world renowned string tutor, Ms Lisa Stewart.

Students are loving playing, singing and learning to perform their Twinkle Twinkles.

This group lesson was inspiring to watch so many young musicians sharing their hard work and making music together. It has been a dream of mine for the last 18 months to see this come to fruition and I thank the students, their parents and the staff for making this a highlight of the term. The students should be so proud of their efforts when they reflect on how far they have come. We are so lucky to have this program and I cannot wait to experience more moments like this with our wonderful students. Their smiles, and joy were infectious (in a good way lol) and the beautiful sounds drew many people into the Music Centre to listen. We are very looking forward to sharing their performances with you across the next decade as they develop into fine young musicians!

So much happens in the academy in the course of a week from Extension Music recitals to tech teams. Mr Druitt has been training our teams on both campuses to make mockumentaries. There will be a short film festival to display this terms work during lunch next week and we are very excited to see what the students have created. Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook for releases of these mockumentaries throughout Term 3.

A huge congratulations to Mr Druitt who has directed these activities and Mr Thompson who has assisted in the production.

Holly Hare and Dylan Roberts presented their HSC Extension Music Recitals on Tuesday. These two young adults are skilled and diligent students who thoroughly entertained their audience and achieved great outcomes in an outstanding manner. We have recorded the recital for our community as well and look forward to sharing this with you.

As we come to the end of Term, I reflect on a unique and challenging period and thank God for His provision and safety. I am blessed to work with such talented and dedicated staff who have used their creative skills to improvise and arrange wonderful learning experiences for our students. We look forward to Term 3 with digital showcases, HSC performances, hundreds of ensemble rehearsals an evolving selection of performances and maybe even a musical announcement!!

The holidays are a great time for extended practise! By all means take a break, but please encourage your children to continue to create, revise and make!

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

For my final Roar article for Term 2 I would like to take the opportunity to provide some updates on some wellbeing-related activities at the College.

Rebooting Positive Psychology at Scots All Saints College The COVID-19 episode has prevented the progress of activities relating to embedding the principles of positive psychology within the College.

With the relaxing of travel and visitor restrictions, Dr Paula Robinson and Nicole Walker from the Applied Positive Psychology Learning Institute (APPLI) met with Mr Weeks and myself last week to formulate new steps to reboot the process. These steps target three areas: • training for staff in the theory and implementation of positive psychology; • forming and developing a model for positive psychology tailored to the College; • instructing students in the practices of positive psychology.

Six steps were identified and discussed to facilitate working towards the three target areas in a timely fashion. Planning for the first two of these steps has commenced, and I look forward to sharing information about these with our College community next term.

Senior School Student Leadership Development Program An online student and staff ballot was conducted last Monday to provide information to assist the selection panel in their consideration of the 48 applicants for inclusion in the 2021 program.

I am currently reading each application and have been very impressed by the thought and preparation that has gone into them. The students who applied should be proud of the standard of applications they submitted. It is tremendously exciting to see the directions in which our student leaders will take their peers next year. Some build on foundations laid by this

year’s leaders, while others will provide new activities and initiatives for the benefit of students.

Core Class and Tutor Group Challenges The competitions currently being conducted within the Middle School for Years 5 – 8 core classes and within the Senior School for Years 9 – 11 will be finalised during the last week of term. Competition within each year, and across each school has been fierce, and even at this late stage there is no clear victor in sight. It has been terrific to see (and hear) the enthusiasm with which each class has entered into the various challenges, which have given different students with different abilities a chance to 'shine' for their peers. It has also provided a valuable opportunity for students to work together with their teachers against a common foe (that would be…me!).

Congratulations and thank you to all concerned for getting involved in the fun.

Bathurst Regional Youth Council Recruitment for the Bathurst Regional Youth Council 2020/2021 was scheduled for June 2020. As a result of COVID-19, the recruitment process has been postponed. The recruitment process for the 2020/2021 Youth Council will be reviewed in August 2020. Please keep a watch on the Bathurst Youth Council Facebook page for further updates regarding applications.

I would encourage suitably interested students within the senior years of the College to give serious thought to applying for this opportunity when it becomes available. Our most recent participant was one of our College Captains, Natalia Burgess, who served as Youth Deputy Mayor. Natalia found the experience to be extremely worthwhile.

Happy Holidays The holiday period that we will soon enter looks to be very different to the one that we 'experienced' at the end of first term. We have welcomed students back to school this term, and the College has settled well into 'new normal' routines.

I hope and trust that all students are looking forward to their well-earned break with anticipation and excitement. Whether they are staying local or taking the opportunity to travel as restrictions continue to ease, I wish all students and their families my very best for a wonderful and safe holiday period.

Active Afternoons Our students have continued to enjoy being out and about in our Active Afternoons program. We certainly appreciated the better weather we experienced this past Tuesday.

Our offering of activities was expanded with the construction of the Frisbee Golf course on the Senior Campus this week, which was enjoyed by the students and staff.

Our mountain bike tracks continue to take shape and the preliminary work on the stage 1 loop on the Senior Campus has been ‘mown in’. The students are helping with some of the design features that are going to be added in the coming weeks. Some working bees may be required in the July holiday period to move some dirt.

Our students involved in the dancing, Zumba, games, scooter riding, Martial Arts and fitness based activities are also enjoying themselves during the Active Afternoon sessions.

We are expecting that there will be a winter season for many of our students in Term 3 (fingers crossed that the pandemic does not resurface).

Our local associations are preparing draws and hygiene and social distancing protocols are being finalized. From what we have seen so far there will be a number of requirements and procedural changes for both players and spectators.

We will communicate these procedures as they are presented to us. For our local sport association competitions (netball, hockey and soccer) there will be registration requirements which will involve online registration.

Details of how to do this will be communicated to families in the coming days.

Similarly, this week the ISA have mapped out a season for the Rugby boys. Mr Gardner is working with the ISA and other member schools to finalize fixtures for our boys. It will be a shortened rugby season and will be on a ‘friendly’ basis rather than for competition points and shields. We are very mindful of the preparedness of our boys for the season.

Whilst all of our opens boys have been given an individualized training program to help get them fit, we still have a lot of work to do to get them match fit. The Open’s rugby boys have been offered strength and conditioning sessions on Monday or Friday afternoons with our strength and conditioning coach. The offer of joining these sessions is still open.

We again thank our students and parents for their patience with getting things sorted.

Winter Sport Competition Update Another week has passed and the cogs are turning for a re-introduction of a winter sport season.

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President

Last week we held our Term 2, week 7 meeting via Zoom, which has been a great way to meet under current circumstances.

It is fantastic to see restrictions continuing to ease, enabling us to go out for a meal or return to other social pursuits, like going to the gym.

Feasting with Lions Cookbook As I mentioned previously, the College has discovered over 100 copies of The Scots School Jubilee Cookbook from 1996. Feasting with Lions is filled with delicious homestyle recipes from a previous era and lovely illustrations from students at the time. This collector's item can be purchased from the P and F Association for just $10 a copy.

The Coffee Club The last time I wrote, I mentioned that the Association had its own espresso coffee machine, which was being used by the students to provide fresh espresso coffee to students and staff via 'The Coffee Club' located in the Senior School Performing Arts Centre. Sandra Sharpham reported back from discussions with the College and last week it was decided that this arrangement would continue and we would further support the concept with the cost of servicing the machine and the purchase of coffee beans.

enhance outcomes for the student community into the future. We have requested ideas from the College, but would also like your suggestions on what we may consider funding. Please email us your ideas and if you have any costings that’s even better.

Please don’t hesitate in helping us help the student community.

Sub-Committee Updates Whilst our sporting sub-committees have had little to report on due to the restrictions ceasing sport, it has been very positive news on the boarding front.

Boarding families continue to meet via Zoom, either just to catch up socially or for a more formal meeting. Gemma Green advised that their last catch up was 'virtually' attended by 30 people, with the main topic being the recent decision to establish a Middle School Boarding House on the All Saints Campus. The general feeling is that this is a positive move and the children who are now on All Saints Campus are enjoying the chance to be kids and not be in the shadow of their elder siblings. They also get a sleep-in and can walk to class!

The Pipes and Drums sub-committee is certainly not sitting still, looking to the future and working towards attendance at events later in the year and into 2021. They are also investigating a new look for their uniforms.

Future Events We have made a request to the College to identify possible dates for an event toward the end of year, with a few ideas for what format this may take to be further discussed. Identifying a date will have its challenges with the unknown nature of sporting competitions and the reshuffling of calendars to enable schools and sports competitions to get back to normal as safely and quickly as possible.

Please remember Association meetings are held on the Wednesday of Week 2 and Week 7 of each term. Meetings are open to all parents and friends of the College and we welcome your attendance.

We look toward our Term 3 Week 2 meeting and we will update you on what format this will take and where it will be.

The Active Afternoons have been a real hit on the All Saints Campus this Term. We have been blessed with sensational weather, just perfect for some physical activity with friends. When you have a spare moment, please check out the latest Active Afternoon video which highlights just how much fun our children are having. Our Middle School students feature in the video this time, however, I can assure you that our Junior School students are having just as much fun!

K-6 Cross Country The Cross-Country was held yesterday under somewhat different circumstances. Whilst there were no war cries or large gatherings, the essence of the races was unchanged. Evidently, a number of our students have continued to work on their fitness throughout the restrictions and they were able to reap the rewards. The 11-14 year olds ran a 3km course and the 8-10 year olds ran a 2km course, a long way for some but a mere sprint for others. Our Junior School students participated in class races with the assistance of the Year 8 and Year 5 students. The adoration our younger students have for their older counterparts was beautifully reciprocated.

Congratulations to everyone who participated with such energy and vigor.

Term 3 Active Afternoons Term 3 Active Afternoons including Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Soccer, Martial Arts, Dance/ Zumba, Strength and Conditioning, Mountain Biking will commence Week 1, Term 3. Local associations have very recently been able to give clubs and schools their starting dates and registration details. Registration details and further information for the College's Core Sports will be sent to parents early next week. We would like all children registered with the appropriate uniform before their competition begins next term. Rugby dates are yet to be confirmed.

Now that some restrictions have been lifted, Middle and Junior School Summer Sports photos have been rescheduled. Students should come to school in their complete sports uniform including their full winter tracksuit and white sports shirt on the day of their photo. All photos will be taken during lunch time.

Year 7 developing Creative Writing skills In English, Year 7 students have been developing their creative writing skills, focusing on the importance of using specific detail and interesting language features to breathe life into description.

After watching a short National Geographic video clip of a ladybug unfurling its wings (click to watch Youtube video here) students brainstormed, creating a powerful bank of vocabulary and imagery. Inspired by this activity, the students wrote their own description of a ladybug.

Lady Beetle It glistened and gleamed, reflective as a mirror. Its detailed wings and delicate complexion made it look as fragile as porcelain, as though it would shatter into a thousand pieces at any moment. It buzzed and fluttered around; controlled and soothing, but wild and captivating all at once. Something about the way it glided so easily through the air was secretive; a million secrets hidden all in one place, shielded by that glossy red shell.

It continued to soar through the sky, that iconic little beetle showcasing the beauty of the natural world. So many shades of red trapped in such a small space; some parts deep as roses, others as crimson as the setting sun. Underneath all that was a small set of bronze wings, glistening gold in the sunshine and vibrating so fast that they became no more than a blur.

They looked translucent, almost transparent in the bright light of the sun, fluttering this way and that. It seemed so vulnerable, that tiny, six-legged creature, clear as glass and delicate as paper, getting blown slightly to the side by the autumn breeze, yet always getting back on track. I followed it into a field of poppies, where I lost it and could follow it no more. That is one of the many obscurities of lady beetles; you can never follow them for long.

French Cinéma is more than just entertainment

Le cinéma in France is considered a seventh art, on par with dance, architecture, music, painting, sculpture and poetry.

Over the last two weeks Year 7 have been immersed in a ‘Mini’ French Film Festival enhancing their language learning, intercultural understanding and film analysis. A variety of movies have been viewed from The Ingenious and witty Moliere to the charming, adventurous and beautiful story of Belle et Sebastian and The Finishers a straightforward, heartfelt tale of determination and the singular will of a young man with a disability.

There was something for every Year 7 French film enthusiast!

Madame Adamson

Madison sings it up Year 12 student Madison Burns created this emotional and engaging work as part of her final year in music.

Exploring layers of sound and the impact on interest Madison created an engaging and emotional song.

The work starts with a solo voice and by 1 minute explores over 25 layers of sound. The work was mastered by our recording studio producer Seton Bremner from the same class. Well done Madison and Seton.

Just a friendly reminder to all in our College Community about staying home if you are unwell and particularly if you are experiencing symptoms of cold or flu.

We understand with all of the interruptions that we’ve faced this year it can be tempting to 'soldier on' when you’re not 100% especially when we’re seeing case numbers of Covid-19 go down and life starting to return to 'normal'.

That said, it’s still critically important that if you have any cold, flu or respiratory symptoms or a fever that you be tested for Covid-19 and then self-isolate until results are known and you have recovered.

Likewise, if you’ve been in contact with someone who is waiting on the results of a Covid-19 test we need you to self-isolate. As soon as the test results are known and you’re not exhibiting symptoms then we’ll happily welcome you back to school The commitment of our students is to be commended but if they are unwell they are much better off at home and resting.
