The Highland Jazz Night is on this Saturday, 15 June at 6:00 pm for a 6:30 pm start. There is still limited space available for anyone who wants to come along. I must say this is my favourite event on the College Calendar and I can’t wait to see how it will be this year in its new format. The Aikman Hall is usually full to capacity for this occasion. The Highland Jazz Night showcases our Pipes and Drums, Highland Dancers and our music students. It is quite an informal night where guests are seated at tables of 8-10 bringing their own food and drinks. Supper can also be purchased from the server. There are so many opportunities available for our students at Scots All Saints College to challenge and enrich them in addition to the academic program. In just the last little while, we have had CWA Public Speaking, HICES Debating, the Big Band Tour to Port Macquarie, the Coonabarabran Horse Expo, AICES, HICES and CIS Cross Country, Mock Trial, the Middle and Senior School Soloists’ Concert, the launch of the Amadeus Music Academy and many sporting opportunities.

These and many other opportunities are provided by staff as part of our holistic approach to develop skills, resilience, confidence, teamwork and pride in representing the College. I encourage students to make the most of the opportunities provided at the College whilst maintaining a healthy and balanced educational experience.

I like watching sport on Saturdays to see the students enjoy being a member of a team and representing the College with pride. This weekend we have home Rugby fixtures against Chevalier College on All Saints Campus in addition to the regular hockey, soccer and netball played in the local town competition. It is my plan to watch Hockey and Rugby this week and netball and soccer the following week. I look forward to seeing many parents supporting their child’s team.

Fundraising efforts for Ronald McDonald House Recently, Scots All Saints College students raised $200 for Ronald McDonald House in Orange by selling carnations on St Valentine’s Day. The support of students was greatly appreciated by the charity who relies on every fundraising dollar to help families in the Central West.

Red Carpet Disco - Friday 14 June - 5:30 pm 6:45 pm Come dressed in your most glamourous clothes (parents too) and walk the red carpet like a movie star at the ‘Red Carpet Disco’. FOJAMS will be preparing some delicious sausage sandwiches and will also be selling a range of drinks and lollies.

The disco is always a highlight and will be a great night of fun, laughter and dancing.

All students will participate in a fun workshop run

by Footsteps Dance Company in the days leading up to the disco so students will be ready to dance the night away. A small charge will be added to accounts to cover the cost of the workshops.

Literature Festival Lots of great activities are planned for the Literature Festival next week (MondayWednesday). The workshops with visiting authors and illustrators are sure to be a hit.

Languages Day - Friday 21 June To celebrate the languages that we study at Scots All Saints College, an event like no other has been organised for Friday 21 June, officially known as ‘Languages Day’.

To make this a fun day, we ask the children to attend school dressed in costume, either with French ‘finesse’ or Japanese style (a Japanese 'hachimaki' headband).

During our Friday assembly time, you are invited to attend a special 'French Concert' where K-2 students will perform in French and Year 3 and 4 students will display Calligraphy and Origami techniques.

Footsteps Dance Company Today and tomorrow all of the students on All Saints Campus will be involved in dance lessons with a dance company called Footsteps. The idea is that they learn some group and individual dances to put into practice at the disco on Friday evening. This should encourage everyone to be up and dancing at the disco.

• Recording and posting video of inappropriate events (e.g. fights), or without the knowledge/ consent of the subject • Posting / sharing representations (pictures, memes) of others that damage their reputation.

The main message takeaway is: are you making good choices and are you being respectful?

Disco The Middle School Disco is on Friday, 14 June at 7:15 pm in the Bickerdike Centre. Students are welcome to arrive at 6:45 pm. Food can be purchased from the FOJAM P & F canteen.

Cross Country Police Liaison Visit It is important that we educate students in the appropriate use of social media and the legalities and possible consequences of misusing such technology. Today we had a visit from Bathurst Area Police Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Jane Heffernan, to speak with Year 7 and 8 students about the responsible use of technology. Following their outstanding performances, Lincoln Craft has made the HICES team, and Miller Rivett and Todd Nelson have made the AICES team to compete at NSW CIS on Thursday 13 June.

Hockey Stars I would like to congratulate Ava Purvis, Chelsea Price and Morgan Still who will be representing CIS at the NSW PSSA Hockey Championships in Newcastle later this month. A wonderful achievement for the girls against some tough competition!

Building confidence in our kids “The important parts of my story, I was realising, lay less in the surface value of my accomplishments and more in what undergirded them - the many small ways I’d been buttressed over the years, and the people who’d helped build my confidence over time. I remembered them all, every person who’d ever waved me forward, doing his or her best to inoculate me against the slights and indignities I was certain to encounter in the places I was headed.” (Michelle Obama, 'Becoming') For Christmas my youngest son gave me Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming. I’d love to boast and say I read it before New Year’s Eve but the truth is all I’ve managed to do with it this year is dip into it occasionally.

While I have enjoyed gaining some insights into American political life I have mostly appreciated her reflections on life. On the long weekend the statement above leapt out at me. Immediately I thought about our College and our students. Our academic program, our co-curricular programs, the student wellbeing focus - all of these initiatives are focused on ensuring our students are well equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them to take their place in the world as confident, wellgrounded, secure citizens.

In his work, Martin Seligman talks about inoculating our young people against learned helplessness in favour of resilience, optimism in place of pessimism.

As I read this quote in Michelle’s book I thought of all the members of our community who do exactly this and partner with us in the great work we do – raising young people. Thank you, on behalf of our students, for the many ways each of you ‘wave our students forward’ and build in them the confidence they need to succeed.

Bathurst Youth Event The local Presbyterian Church Youth Group are hosting a ‘BXYouth Party’ on the Scots Campus, June 21, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. All current senior school students are welcome to attend. Please see Miss Hodge for more details.

Student phones reminder The Senior School has a ‘no phone’ policy. From 8:30 am to 3:30 pm our campus is to be phone free.

Phones used without permission during this time will be confiscated.

Police Liaison Officer On Friday the local Police Liaison Officer will visit the Senior School to speak with our students on a range of topics. At the forefront will be cybersafety. It is vital that our students are aware of the legal and social implications of the misuse of social media and phones. Technology is a wonderful tool and we want to ensure our young people are using it correctly. This visit may be a great catalyst for a conversation with your young person about how they use technology.

Cadets Last week our Cadet Leader training group learned how to prepare and consume rations. The recruits were instructed on using a Hexi Stove using Hexamine as the fuel and how to use a Trangia stove. Both devices were used to boil water to add to the MREs (meals ready to eat). The recruits thoroughly enjoyed the meals. This week the recruits will be preparing sleeping areas using hoochies, cord and pegs. We are very grateful for the lesson preparation and planning that our CWO2 Caiban Lucas provides to the program.

Winter Sports Tour 2020 We thank the students and parents ho responded to the Winter Sport Tour Survey. We have 59 students from Years 9 to 11 interested in going on a winter sport tour in 2020. We will now be collating the data from the responses and making plans with sport tour operators to find suitable tours.

AICES Cross Country On Thursday 6 June, sixteen Scots All Saints College students represented at the AICES Cross Country held at the Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park. The event was rescheduled due to inclement weather on the Tuesday and as a result the number of representatives was down for all schools. The races all had very strong fields with between 50 and 75 competitors in each. We thank and congratulate the students who represented the College.

Our results were as follows: Lilly Kable 11th, Te Paea Leahey 42nd, Miller Rivett 6th, Alice Radford 42nd, Charlotte Bertwistle 27th, James Burgess 44th, Todd Nelson 48th, William Thomas 55th, Lyndzee Kelleher 47th, Patrick Saint 44th, Poppy Hobson 45th, Morgan Watts 5th, Isaac Cove 36th, Otto Kuhn 37th, Sophie Hillsdon 20th, Baxter Rivett 21st.

From these results, Morgan Watts, Miller Rivett and Todd Nelson were selected into the AICES team to represent at the NSWCIS Cross Country today (Thursday 13 June). We congratulate these students.

During these sessions, our authors and illustrators will share their knowledge and passion for books, writing and illustrating with our students.

A number of our authors and illustrators will be bringing along copies of their books which will be available for purchase during the Festival.

These books will be signed by the authors on request. Prices will range from $5 to $25 so send some money with your children if you would like to take advantage of this offer.

Bathurst Winter Festival portraits

Tuesday presented a wonderful opportunity for our artistic students to participate in a Filmed Portraits Project.

Michael Killalea from Esem Projects conducted a workshop with students from Year 8 with analog and digital technology.

This technology was used to film and manipulate portrait images.

The students also learnt how to use video effects through feedback and video synthesis techniques. Some of the works created will be on display in the Bathurst Winter Festival night light display. We thank Esem Projects for sharing their skills and giving our students the opportunity to be a part of this magnificent community event.

Languages Day celebration To celebrate the languages we study at Scots All Saints College, an event like no other has been organised for Friday 21 June, officially known as 'Languages Day’.

Students from K-6 re encouraged to come to school dressed with either a French ‘finesse’ or Japanese style (a Japanese hachimaki headband).

Any other attire they require is to be brought with them to school.

The order of the day is as follows: 'French Concert' during the 9:00 am Assembly K-2 will perform in French The children have been rehearsing with great zest.

(If your child requires any additional costuming a separate letter will be sent home) Year 3 and 4 students will display Calligraphy and Origami techniques.

Middle Session: Year 3 and 4 Japanese students Sushi making (and eating) in the Dining Hall.

Year 5: Eiffel Tower Construction Making At 9:50 am during the middle school assembly, Year 5 will perform their rendition of two wellknown and loved stories from their childhood, translated into French.

The Big Band Tour The Big Band is safely home after a huge weekend of all things jazz in Port Macquarie at the Big Band Tour.

An amazing workshop with pro Dan Barnett finished an excellent experience for our students and staff. The weekend provided an inspirational experience for our Senior School musicians.

Students were involved in full dayworkshops, gigs and the Saturday Night Concert with a collection of world renowned jazz musicians!

On the way we stopped into our Lithgow Campus to perform for our Pre-K and Junior school students. Thanks to Mrs Leaf for her support across the weekend and well done students.

The Big Band will be playing at the Highland Jazz Night - Saturday 15 June 2019. Be sure to join us.

Student writing Tony Awards On 10 June, the 73rd Annual Tony Awards took place in Midtown Manhattan, Broadway. Complete with its billboards and bustling streets, the area is known for its excellence in theatre (musical and drama based) and the number of high quality shows that are regularly performed. Some of the productions nominated for the Tony Awards were Hadestown (with a whopping 14 nominations), the book based play To Kill A Mockingbird, the revival of Oklahoma! and teen favourite Be More Chill.

There is a reason people are so enamored by theatre and it’s ability to transport you to a different world completely, and to have an award show recognising efforts of these creators certainly helps keep the culture of Broadway and theatre around the world alive. Many international fans watched intently on their screens, waiting for their favourite musical to win in their nominated category or for live performance by some of the world’s most talented performers.

It is also important to recognise how social media and the internet has changed theatre and its accessibility. More and more people around the world are hearing the soundtracks of productions and talking about them online, recommending them to family and friends and creating hype around them with fellow fans online. This largely helps bolster the popularity of many of these productions. Take for example, Mean Girls, though it is an adaption of a very popular teen film, a lot of it’s hype was centered around social media as fans excitedly shared their opinions of the musical and others listened and followed.

The show has a large online presence and received 12 nominations at the 2018 Tony Awards, being paired with a performance.

As shows like this become more accessible with the rise of technology and the internet, why not tune in? You can stream and watch the 73rd Tony Awards online and on television!

Literature Festival 17, 18 and 19 June 2019

Seven exciting writers and illustrators will be giving talks and workshops over the three days

Dr Martin Chatterton Dr Martin Ed Chatterton has illustrated books by some of the leading names in children’s literature and has an ongoing co-writing relationship with global publishing phenomenon, James Patterson. As ‘Ed Chatterton’, he writes adult crime fiction.

Matthew Lin

Matthew Lin is a Manga artist and more! An accomplished illustrator and graphic designer Matt has turned his love of books, illustration and typography into his profession.

Matt has illustrated and designed books/magazines for publishers Blake, Hachette, HarperCollins and Macmillian.

Sue has written numerous books in a variety of genres: fiction and nonfiction, picture books through to YA, including the best-selling The Firefighters, the award-winning A Swim in the Sea and the narrative nonfiction Platypus. Her latest book is Missing, a suspenseful mystery for readers aged 10+.

Paul has a Master of Education, working almost 20 years as a teacher of Upper Primary and Secondary. He has won numerous awards in teaching such as a Quality Teacher Award, The Premier’s English Scholarship and awards for his co-ordination of Regional Shakespearean Festivals.

Now an English teacher at Scots All Saints College, Christine Sams has worked as a journalist for more than two decades for newspapers including The Sun-Herald, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph. She specialises in entertainment.

Yvette Poshoglian Yvette Poshoglian is the bestselling author of over 30 books for children and young readers.

Mick Elliott

Mick Elliott is the author of The Turners trilogy, a hilariously disgusting adventure series for middle readers about Leo Lennox, a reluctant 13 year old shape-shifter. The series was nominated for an Aurealis Award for Best Children’s Fiction and features on the NSW Premier’s Reading.
