Last Thursday 30 May, Year 10 student Callum Duncan-Keen, participated in the State Finals of the annual Australian Brain Bee competition, which brings together some of the brightest young minds in NSW. Callum ranked in the top 85 students from across NSW to be selected for the State Finals, held at the School of Medical Sciences, University of NSW. After the initial round was marked, Callum was announced in the top 8 of all students who competed in the State Finals.

He was then required to participate in a final round of live questioning to determine the State Champion. Callum performed extremely well under pressure and finished the competition in equal fifth place. This is an astounding achievement and places Callum in the top 0.5% of all NSW students. The Brain Bee is a worldwide neuroscience competition that aims to educate students about the brain and its functions, neuroscience research, careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. Students were tested on topics relating to the anatomy and physiology of the human brain - such as intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, sleep and addiction.

I have enjoyed visiting a range of classes in the last week primarily in the Junior School on the All Saints Campus and also at the Lithgow Campus. It was pleasing to see students so engaged with their work and happy to share it with me. Kindergarten enjoyed asking me some quite complex questions which revealed how they think about the world around them. In other classes, I enjoyed reading reports they had written and engaging in a Science lesson. continued page 2

I also visited a Year 8 enrichment Visual Arts class where the students were working very productively. The 15 Year 8 students had the opportunity to work with Esem Projects and Michael Killalea to create filmed portraits. Students used analog and digital technology to film and manipulate portrait images of each other. They learnt how to use video effects through feedback and video synthesis techniques. Some of the works created will be part of a projection featuring at this year’s Bathurst Winterfest. Students had a great time using specialist equipment and experimenting with motion imaging.

I would like to wish all students and families a well-deserved break over the upcoming June Long Weekend. I know that many boarding students are certainly looking forward to getting home for a few days. I remind all parents that school does not resume until Wednesday 12 June.

Staff will be doing a day of professional development on the Tuesday which particularly allows the boarding students to have an extra day for travel time. Boarders are able to return to the boarding house any time after 2:00vpm on Tuesday 11 June.

The Highland Jazz Night is fast approaching on Saturday 15 June. I must say that this is my favourite event of the College Calendar and I can’t wait to see how it will be this year in its new format. The Aikman Hall is usually full to capacity for this occasion. The Highland Jazz Night showcases our Pipes and Drums, Highland Dancers and our music students. It is quite an informal night where guests are seated at tables of 8-10 with food and drinks supplied by the guests. Supper can also be purchased from the server.

On the airwaves

It's true we like to involve our students in every aspect of Scots All Saints College life so they can learn and enjoy many diverse experiences.

From this week, you may hear our School leaders, Year 12 Captain, Brad Gardiner and Vice Captain, Kate Hodges on the radio in Bathurst and Orange. Brad and Kate jumped into the recording booth at the local 2BS/ B-Rock radio station to record a new advertisement to help promote our College mission to value all students for their diverse strengths and passions in all their endeavours.

A new All-Rounder Scholarship program is currently open for all new students from Year 5 through to Year 12 seeking to enrol in 2020.

Musica Viva Performance The March of the Fire Ants Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were treated to a performance by The March of the Fire Ants.

Brisbane based musicians from the program Musica Viva performed An Australian Backyard Suite by Australian composer Paul Kopetz, who magically evokes the sounds of lorikeets, cicadas and the wind though the treetops.

The students have been preparing for the arrival of the guest performers in Music.

They loved participating in this interactive concert, conducting, moving, singing and playing instruments.

Literature Festival – space to read Matthew Lin 17, 18 and 19 June 2019 Matthew Lin is a Mick Elliott and Matthew Lin round out our wonderful group of authors and illustrators presenting during our upcoming Literature Festival.

Mick Elliott Mick Elliott is the author of THE TURNERS trilogy, a hilariously disgusting

adventure series for middle readers about Leo Lennox, a reluctant 13 year old shapeshifter. The series was nominated for an Aurealis Award for Best Children’s Fiction and features on the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge list.

Mick is a television producer and scriptwriter at Nickelodeon. His producing credits include Slime Cup, Camp Orange, SlimeFest and hundreds of advertising campaigns.

His dynamic and interactive presentations and creative workshops are always a hit with kids at schools and festivals.

Manga artist and more! An accomplished illustrator and graphic designer Matt has turned his love of books, illustration and typography into his profession.

Matt has illustrated and designed books/magazines for publishers Blake, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillian and Scholastic. Being brought up on Astro Boy, Looney Tunes and Transformers has given Matt a great love for cartoons, comics and video games!

Matt will be presenting drawing workshops on Manga, cartooning and Superheroes. Matt likes blue and black pens and he likes to scribble.

He also likes working in traditional mediums as well as digital.

North West Equestrian Expo 2019 What a tremendous first big show for our new Scots All Saints Equestrian Team and didn’t we put the team on the equestrian interschools map!

Our team consisted of 17 riders and 19 horses who ventured to Coonabarabran for the 5 day show. With over 400 horses and schools from all over the state including some from interstate, it was a busy few days.

Our riders competed in just about all disciplines including Eventing, Combined Training, Dressage, Sporting, Showjumping, Team Barrels, Team Penning, Active Expo Riding, Pentathlon, Polocrosse and Warrumbungles Way. Our riders have been working extremely hard for this event over the past few months and their hard work paid off.

On Friday and Saturday, we started off with the Eventing and Combined Training. A special

mention to Megan Redpath, riding her mare, Rosthwaite Venice Beach who competed in her first official 2** competition (115cm courses). Megan excelled placing third overall. Hannah Jonkers, Hannah Gill, Felicity Webb, Sophie MaCallum, Lana Eastment, Rosie Webb and Lottie Telford all placed in their eventing competition, with Victoria Wythe and Phillipa Webb placing in their combined training. Courtney Roberts also performed well in Eventing.

On Saturday, the Polocrosse began with Division 2 in knockout competition and our team of Felicity Webb, Megan Redpath and Maddie Ford were undefeated moving them into the finals on Sunday. These girls showed that they were a team to reckon with and came home with the runner up ribbon!!

experienced players. Sisters Rosie Webb and Victoria Webb, along with cousin, Phillipa Webb played their first rounds and were undefeated.

They made it to the finals and with a barrage of yelling and screaming from all the parents and other team members they won 3 – 1, taking out the title of Polocrosse Champions 2019 (B grade). Excitement was an understatement!

The Working Horse Challenge is always a popular event and Maddie Ford, Jack Graf and Victoria Wythes did amazing workouts. Congratulations to Victoria who made the top 10 and went into the finals.

From Saturday through to Sunday, Lana Eastment and Millicent Cupples participated in the pentathalon (Showjumping, Running, Bike riding, Flagging and Javelin).

rounds which is due to their dedication to working hard. Lillian Oke, Victoria Wythe and Katherine Blackburn all rode beautiful dressage tests. Maddie Ford came third in the barrels and Rosie Webb in the time trial.

Warrumbungles Way is a competition made up of a series of challenges that stockman would experience along with a freestyle section. Maddie Ford, Phillipa Webb and Jack Graf completed the series with ease and were amazing in their freestyle sections.

On Monday night, we all lined up with another 45 teams for the team barrel races. Maddie Ford, Rosie Webb and Victoria Webb had amazing runs coming 5th overall.

Tuesday was a slightly more relaxed morning with most of our riders competing in team penning.

Scots All Saints teams compete at State da Vinci Decathlon Two Scots All Saints College teams travelled to Knox Grammar last week to compete in the State da Vinci Decathlon.

The Year 6 team and the Year 8 team qualified through their strong efforts at the Regional Decathlon held at Scots All Saints College last term.

Both teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience at Knox Grammar and were challenged by the diversity of the ten academic disciplines and the high level of difficulty that the questions posed.

Final positions are yet to be announced but our students represented the school with great distinction.

Languages Day celebration Year 5: Eiffel Tower Construction Making

To celebrate the languages that we study at Scots All Saints College, an event like no other has been organised for Friday 21 June, officially known as 'Languages Day’.

At 9:50 am during the middle school assembly, Year 5 will perform their rendition of two well-known and loved stories from their childhood, translated into French.

To make this a fun day, we ask the children to attend school dressed in costume, either with French ‘finesse’ or Japanese style (a Japanese hachimaki headband like you can see on the ninja bear to the right is fine.)

The order of the day is as follows: 'French Concert' during the 9:00 am Assembly K-2 will perform in French.

The children have been rehearsing with great zest.

(If your child requires any additional costuming a separate letter will be sent home) Year 3 and 4 students will display Calligraphy and Origami techniques.

Middle Session: Year 3 and 4 Japanese students Sushi making (and eating) in the Dining Hall.

Year 5M “Où est le mouton vert?”(Where Is The Green Sheep) Year 5N “La chenille qui fait des trous” (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) The two Year 6 classes will perform traditional Japanese felt plays.

Toga Dress Ups Currently, Year 7 are studying Ancient Rome. As part of their studies they enjoyed dressing up in togas.

They were put into groups and given the instructions on how to wrap one of their group members in the well-known, ancient costume.

Year 7 had a lot of fun with many moments of laughing during this hands-on educational activity.

National Simultaneous Storytime Scots All Saints College PreKindergarten and Junior School Students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime on 22 May at 11am.

SPOTLIGHT ON NETBALL This weekend we send our best wishes to the girls representing at the NSW Senior State Netball Titles being played in Sydney. We have Matilda Proctor and Zoe Lewis playing for Bathurst in the 17s, Lara Abbott, Lauren Cant and Lucy Proctor playing for Bathurst in the 15s and Jorja Hazell playing for Parkes in the 15s.

How long have you coached netball?

I have only begun coaching this year, as I am new to the College. I have played netball in the past and am playing this year in the Bathurst competition.

What is the best thing about coaching?

Seeing the girls develop both netball skills and other interpersonal skills outside academic pursuits.

What is your favourite netball team?

Apart from the SASC 3rds it is the NSW Swifts.

How would you best spend your holidays?

Spending time with family and friends.
