Students on Campus West (Saints) will dance the night away at Footsteps Disco.
Our students organized some amazing demonstrations of just what modern education looks like, with the use of a wide range of technologies including VR goggles, Spheros Robotics, 3D printers and laser cutters, drones, aquaponics, with great interactive displays from Lumination and Bricks 4 Kidz! Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the launch of our new centre, which will enable our teachers and students to embrace a wide range of STEM based learning activities linked to real world situations. A special thanks to Mr Jackman, Mr Reeks, Ms Barclay and their team of staff and students, who worked so hard to bring the Open Night together so successfully.

Following on from last week’s article, I mentioned that 20 years ago I produced a national television program Life: Body, Mind and Spirit. As part of the series I interviewed several famous Australia Christian sporting heroes, and one interview was with cricketer Brian Booth. I remember one of the stories he shared was when he was a boy. He was playing in a cricket game with this father and during the game the opposition got them all out for 27. Brian said to me that he was quite dejected as they walked out onto the field and were heckled and laughed at by the opposition. He said his father then spoke to the team and gave a ‘Churchillian’ style of address: “Never give up … make every effort to win this game.” His father’s words and the determination of the team worked as they got the opposition all-out for 26 and won the game! During the interview, Brian used the story to talk about the Christian walk. His point was that we need to add to our faith perseverance, trusting in a great God – particularly when things seem to be at their bleakest. Brian was of course alluding to the Apostle Peter’s writing: “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” (2 Peter 1:5,6) There may be one or two of us in our community that are facing challenging circumstances or an uncertain future, may I encourage you to talk to God and place your hope in Him. God never promises that life will be easy, but he does promise to strengthen us, journey with us, and get us to our eternal home. It is certainly a busy time in the Careers space at the College with many NSW University Early Entry programs now open, along with accommodation and scholarships applications. This was a great lunch time session, students were able to ask Anna questions regarding the application process, what the conditions of work would be like and importantly what would be the pay! Bell Shakespeare performance
Year 9 had the opportunity to watch ‘Such Sweet Sorrow’ by Bell Shakespeare. The players showcased Romeo and Juliet offering a wonderful performance, insight into the play and a deeper understanding of this seminal text. Some students even had the opportunity to participate.

Extension Music Recital Concert On Tuesday 25 May teachers and family were entertained by Oscar Stocks and George Butler as they presented their Extension Music Recital concert. The evening was entirely organised by the students who were completing the concert organisation component of the Music Extension course. Oscar presented two works for Horn and Piano by Strauss and Hindemith accompanied by Ms Sargeant, and one work for solo horn by the Australian composer Paul Stanhope. The challenging nature of the French horn and his repertoire provided significant challenges for Oscar in the performance, but his consistent commitment to practice allowed him to rise to the occasion. George presented the jazz standard Moose the Mooche by Charlie Parker accompanied by the jazz trio of Mr McKenzie, Ms Sargeant and Millaine Longmore. George’s love of jazz and commitment to the style was communicated to the audience through his high energy performance. George concluded the evening with two more Jazz works by Kenny Garrett and Wayne Shorter entertaining the audience and showcasing his improvisation skills. We wish the boys all the best as they continue their preparations for the HSC performance exams at the end of Term 3. Ms Elizabeth Sargeant, Music Teacher

Evatt NSW Competition Last Thursday, Scots All Saints College hosted the regional round of the renowned Evatt NSW, a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition. Teams of two students debate, amend and vote on resolutions from the perspective of their assigned nation. It aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens. Congratulations to the following teams of students who represented their nation with diplomacy and gained valuable public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills.

International Food for Invictus On Wednesday, 26 May, Year 9 and 10 students had the task of trying food and a new cuisine for their Invictus class challenges. International Prefect Mark Liu, with the help of other international students, organised an International Food Stall in the dining room for students to try a different cuisine. The dining hall was decorated with flags, posters and other material to compliment the food in the dining room. The food was absolutely brilliant and massive thank you goes to the dining staff for preparing the food (and cleaning up the mess afterwards), the International students for organising the event and those who helped run the event behind the scenes. We are all very appreciate and glad to have our stomachs full. Emily Brown (Year 10)

2021 SASC Literature Festival ‘Space for Stories’ - June 7, 8 and 9 A particularly interesting point to note as we introduce our final two presenters, Ursula Dubosarsky and Tohby Riddle, is that they have collaborated on a number of books. Their most recent collaboration is the 2021 publication The March of the Ants. We are very excited to have them both as part of our Literature Festival line-up!
Ursula Dubosarsky
Ursula Dubosarsky was born in Sydney, Australia in 1961, the third child in a family of writers. From the time she was first able to read, at age six, she wanted to be a writer. She wrote stories and poems and puppet plays all through primary and high school. Ursula is currently the Children’s Laureate and a frequent visitor in libraries, schools and festivals around the world, talking about books and reading, and teaching children and adults the art of creative writing.

Tohby Riddle Tohby Riddle is an awardwinning writer, illustrator, cartoonist, designer and sometime editor based in Sydney. He has written and illustrated numerous wellloved picture books; written a young adult novel; was the cartoonist for Good Weekend for nearly ten years; and is a former editor of The School Magazine, a literary magazine for children published by the NSW Department of Education.

ATHLETICS AND ALL
Athletics Day at Saints’ has been a long term event since the very early days of the school’s history. One of the second Headmaster’s, Edwin Bean’s early decisions in 1878 was to establish a regular day for the Annual Sports. These gatherings quickly attained a semi-public character, attracting large attendances. Every year since then except 1893 and when the school was temporarily closed, the Annual Athletics Sports have been held. This year marks the 133rd year of this Annual event and over time many records have been set and champions recorded. This year we are hoping to have one of our past champions visit us as the sub junior champion in 1941! Grahame Down has been invited to the Middle School Athletics carnival to be held here on the 11th June. The book The History of All Saints’ College Bathurst 18731963 has recorded the names of many of the athletics champions over that time and record holders in various events. Some records may still stand as some events are no longer held with the change from imperial to metric measurements. John Norman Smith of the Tracey period held a record for the broad jump at GPS sports (21ft.) and throwing the cricket ball (115yards 2ft. 11in) which was a world’s record in 1897! He later went on to play football for New South Wales against Queensland and was considered to be the best sportsman the school had known. Best performing athletes of Rev. Watson’s period were H. Veness who was Junior Champion in 1927 and Senior Champion in 1929, J. Taylor, Junior Champion 1939 and 1940 and Senior champion 1941 and 1942. More recent champions are notable Old boy David John Tiller (ASC 1949 to 1953) who was Senior Athletics Champion 1953 and Tim Sargeant (1954-62) our museum curator, was Senior Athletics Champion in 1962 and Old Boys Champion in 1963! In 1989 Michael Siede, (1984 to 1989) was Athletics Champion and received the C, A, & J Thompson Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Athletics. His son Thomas Siede together with Megan Redpath were the Junior School Cross Country Captains in 2015 and led

Ernie (Scott) Gardner 1980. Tim Sargeant 1962. their team to win the Aggregate Trophy in the HICES Cross Country Carnival. Emma Statham (2000-2006) was CIS Cross Country Champion, All Saints’ Opens Athletics Champion and was Captain of the NSW All Schools and Australian All Schools Cross Country Teams. Another champion in Cross Country is Todd Nelson (2011-) who competed in the School Sport National Cross Country Championships in 2015 as a ten year old. He finished third and won a bronze National medal. Todd continues to run and competed in the NSW All Schools Cross Country competition in 2019. Richard Hobson (1981-1985), father of the Hobson girls, Lucy, Sophie, Jemina and Poppy, was an ASC athletic representative while at the school as well as being an allround sportsman. Lucy was the All Saints’ Athletics captain and Senior Girls Age Champion in 2014. Apart from the annual Athletics and Cross Country Inter House Competitions, All Saints’ took part in the Annual WAS Athletics and Cross Country events competing against various other western schools since the early 70’s where rivalry was fierce. Many students from Saints’ were able to break records in the various fields, to name one- Natasha Kelley, (now Milgate) who has 3 children here at Scots All Saints’, broke the High Jump record at WAS in 1993. Hopefully we will see some more champions emerge from future competitions and to quote a champion: “Victory is having done your best. If you’ve done your best, you’ve won!”. Good luck to all the athletes taking part at the Inter House Athletics Carnival!
