Pre-K - Year 8 Cross Country The Pre-K - Year 8 Cross Country event will be held on All Saints Campus.
It has been a great start for our boarders who were able to return for the start of the term. They have been more highly restricted in movement than day students, with no town leave outings or weekends at home. They have been so patient and co-operative under the circumstances. So after six successful but somewhat unusual weeks, it is time for a good break and a chance to catch up and just ‘take stock’ of things. Enjoy the long weekend and we look forward to the resumption of classes on Wednesday.

Helping children in times of uncertainty and crisis Members of the Scots All Saints College Middle and Junior School leadership team presented a donation to Mr Matthew Shone from the Australian Childhood Foundation early Wednesday morning. Middle School and Junior School students on All Saints Campus held a 'Mufti-Day' a few weeks ago to raise funds to support the work this charity does to help children. Reminder: College campuses and Uniform Shop closed on Friday 5 June As previously advised, classes will conclude today at 3:20 pm and will recommence on Wednesday 10 June. Boarders can be picked up today and return on Tuesday 9 June from 2:00 pm. All of our campuses and the Uniform Shop will be closed on Friday 5 June. This additional holiday to enables families to plan a mid-term break and some respite. We trust that parents and students continue to adhere to all of the necessary COVID-19 precautions in their communities and keep safe during the long weekend.

New Outdoor Café on Scots Campus We are excited to announce our new Outdoor Café will open its doors for the first time from next Wednesday 10 June when classes recommence after the long weekend. The Outdoor Café will operate from the Pavilion on Scots Campus overlooking the main oval from Monday to Friday at recess – 11:10 am to 11:35 am and at lunch 1:05 pm -1:50 pm. Purchases will be with cash or by EFTPOS only and we will seek to introduce a ‘Flexi Schools’ pass which will operate similar to a debit card from Term 3. Day and boarding students who have chosen and paid to eat in the Dining Hall will continue to do so. If day or boarding students chose to eat at the Outdoor Café they are most welcome to do so and the cost will be up to the student. A new menu for the Café has been developed with a range of snack and lunch meal options. This will be an exciting new option for our students enabling them to spread out and make the most of the spacious senior campus.

New Middle School Boarding for Years 5 to 8 In a first for NSW boarding schools Scots All Saints College, Bathurst has announced a new Middle School boarding program where Year 5 -Year 8 boys and girls can not only learn but also live on Campus in the newly reopened All Saints Campus boarding houses. With the advantage of wide open campuses, fresh air and unrivalled space to thrive, Scots All Saints has proven it can support regional and rural boarding students with a safe, secure and continuous learning environment which is closer to home. Designed especially to nurture and value the contributions of younger boarders new to our school, the unique Middle School boarding program now provides an even greater opportunity for individual students to flourish and form strong bonds with their peers. Senior School Student Leadership Development Program As I mentioned in my previous article, the 2020 Student Leadership Development Program has been placed on the back burner due to restrictions necessary to control and prevent the spread of COVID19. However, through the opportunities for Year 12 committee meetings during Monday and Friday pastoral periods, I am pleased to announce that plans are underway in many program areas that will be unveiled shortly. Last Monday also saw the launch of the 2021 Student Leadership Development Program. I met with the Year 11 students to outline the program, and how they can apply to be part of it. The 2021 student leadership positions open to Year 11 candidates are the same as last year: • College Captains lead the student body and oversee the functioning of the different student leadership programs. They are ambassadors for the College in the wider community. They lead College assemblies and chair Student Leaders Committee Meetings to oversee the effective coordination of student programs. • House Captains plan, coordinate and organise House carnivals, competitions, events and activities. They promote and encourage the development of the identity of each House, based on the values and character of the person after whom each House is named. • Academic Prefects promote academic excellence within the student body. They focus on developing initiatives to assist students in realising their academic potential and promote and contribute to the diligent and productive endeavour of students towards their studies. • Boarding Prefects provide leadership, support and encouragement to other boarders. They promote ideas from other boarding students on matters that will contribute to a better boarding experience for students and work with the Director of Boarding to develop enjoyable weekend and other activities for boarding students. • Chapel Prefects promote and support the Christian Mission of the College. They lead the College’s ‘Cru’ Group and assist with weekly and special Chapel services. • Co-curricular Prefects encourage student participation in the co-curricular activities of the College. They are advocates for the values of co-curricular participation within a rounded educational outlook. They assist co-curricular coordinators in their organisation of and preparation for ongoing co-curricular programs and activities and special co-curricular events. They explore initiatives to promote a social justice mindset within the students of the College and look for opportunities to increase connections between students of the College and the wider community. It is hoped that the appointment process for the 2021 leaders will be finalised by the middle of Term 3. This will allow the newly appointed leaders to work with their outgoing counterparts, to allow the transfer of projects, information and experience. The opportunities offered by the program are not limited to the students appointed as Captains or Prefects. All Year 12 students have a role to play in setting the tone for students in the Senior School, and a very pleasing standard has been set by this year’s cohort. 2020 Year 8 Student Leadership Team There are many appealing aspects of our Middle School structure but one obvious advantage is the unique leadership opportunities it provides to Year 8 students. Each year there are ten Year 8 students elected by their peers and teachers to represent the All Saints Campus student body. These students form the Year 8 Student Leadership Team and are an integral part of helping give direction to the future of our College. We have a boy and girl Captain, Vice Captains and the remaining six students are given a variety of portfolios to manage which include Chapel, Academic Excellence, Social Justice and Student Wellbeing. These are in line with our four College Values of Faith, Knowledge, Respect and Compassion respectively. Each fortnight the Year 8 Leadership Team meets with Mr Jackman, Head of Campus, in the Boardroom. At present they are working on selecting what local and national charities and foundations they want to support with their fundraising.
They are also looking at ways in which the students can provide community service and be active in the Bathurst region. It is a pleasure working with such a dynamic and inspiring group of students who all have a great deal to offer. Natalia Burgess - College Captain Being elected as one of the College Captains for 2020 is not only a huge honour, but my biggest pleasure. I am privileged to work alongside all of my teachers, peers and the College community to make Scots All Saints College the best it can be. Living the core values of Scots All Saints College - Knowledge, Respect, Faith, Compassion - has acted as a personal driver for me. Throughout my 12 years at the College, I have learnt that cultural and community harmony does not come about organically. It comes about through a sense of collective responsibility, reflectivity, dialogue and accountability. Our community harmony is related to the way we all love, laugh, cry and seek dignity in our lives. Unity is our strength. help it be the best it can be. I have been involved with the Bathurst Regional Youth Council since 2018 and I have been elected as the Youth Deputy Mayor for 2019/20. This is a role that comes with a lot of responsibilities working alongside the Bathurst Youth Mayor, Youth Development & Community Events Officer, Community Development Team Leader and the 12 other Youth Councillors to voice the concerns for the youth of the community. Together we plan and host events including YJAM (a music event to acknowledge and listen to the bright stars of the Bathurst musical community), Food & Flix (an outdoor cinema event) and some How-To-Adult workshops we run at TAFE for Year 10/11 students to help them develop skills for future

independent living. I also undertake a number of other roles like assisting with tasks and supporting the Youth Mayor, chairing meetings, representing and speaking for the Youth Council at community functions, events and meetings. Most importantly - ensuring all Youth Councillors and the rest of the young people of the Bathurst Region have an opportunity to voice their opinion. continued page 6

I am an advocate for giving young people a platform from which they can speak for themselves, voice their concerns and communicate with others effectively. I have actively participated in the community through the 2BS Christmas Miracle Appeal for the past 9 years, Relay for Life, Operation Christmas Child, ANZAC Parades, volunteering at the Bathurst Eisteddfod and I have organised school fundraisers for Ronald McDonald House. In Year 11 and Year 12, the Student Leadership Team sold carnations for Valentine’s Day where students and teachers were able to buy them for their loved ones. This fundraiser, held in Middle School at the All Campus, has raised over $800 for Ronald McDonald in the past 2 years due to the overwhelming support of the College community. I have been announced as the Jack
Aubin Young Citizen of the Year 2020 for Bathurst and was the Bathurst Rotary Youth of the Month for August 2019. I have also been involved in the past with the Lions Youth of the Year (YOTY) Quest. I have also recently graduated with distinction (96/100 A+ Honours) for my IMEB Speech and Drama Licentiate Teachers Diploma, where I can now own, operate and teach at my own Speech and Drama studio, graduating later in the year at the APGS (Australian Performing Arts Grammar School). Now that I am a teacher, I am excited to help other students find their talents, as well as develop their confidence and other speech and drama skills. I am so fortunate to be supported by such a wonderful community where I am able to undertake any endeavour I choose, knowing I have the support, encouragement and guidance of the College community.
My family is my biggest support system, and I always look up to them. My mother is the perfect example of a strong, caring, independent woman, always telling me that helping others is the best gift you can give. It can be as simple as just being kind, for kindness can change the world. I wholeheartedly believe that the youth of today is our country of tomorrow. This is why we need to learn, dream, act with enthusiasm, optimism and admiration. A true leader will never be afraid to reach for the stars. If you can work hard and you set your goals, you can achieve anything. It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is, how tall you are, what size you are or where you come from. All it takes is for one person to speak up for what they believe in to empower others to do the same.
Harry Dickenson - College Captain I am delighted to be elected as a 2020 College Captain and play an active leadership role for my fellow peers and students. There are so many amazing opportunities available at Scots All Saints College and I want to be able to work with teachers, staff and students to be a courteous hand for the school community. I am actively engaged in both academic and co-curricular settings, always seeking new activities and opportunities to build positive relationships at the College. Throughout the past five years at the school, I have developed a passion for the performing arts. In Year 11, I took on the role of the Beast in the school’s musical production of Beauty and the Beast

performed at BMEC (Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre. I enjoy listening to and performing music through constantly developing my vocal ability and guitar playing, studying Music 1 in the 2020 HSC and performing in various school ensembles. I am involved in many teams sports in both a competitive and social setting, representing the College in the Opens Rugby Union team and First 5 Basketball in 2019. As the College Captain, I pride myself in representing the school, but I believe the role of a leader is about putting the needs of others before your own. Jake Henry - All Saints Campus - Year 8 I am privileged to be a 2020 All Saints Campus Captain and look forward to being more involved in the school community. As a Year 8 student leader, I pride myself in supporting my fellow peers, teachers and the College community.

Phillipa Webb - All Saints Campus - Year 8 I come from a small country community and up until Year 7, I have always attended a much smaller school. I have found the transition to Scots All Saints College to be a smooth experience. This has been helped by the fact that the Scots All Saints community is friendly, welcoming and willing to help. Over 2019 and 2020, I have been involved in both of the musicals, 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Annie'. Unfortunately, 'Annie' has been called off because of COVID19. That was very disappointing but hopefully, we can do a version of it later in the year or next year.

I am very grateful for the opportunities the school provides. I have been fortunate to represent the school in lots of sporting and co-curricular activities including hockey, touch football and the equestrian and cattle teams. Being involved in these teams and activities allows me to make many friendships across different year groups, from different backgrounds and all across the state. Active Afternoons Our Active Afternoon sessions are well underway. The joy and excitement displayed by the students has been very uplifting. There are a multitude of activities spread across both campuses. We are certainly very lucky and grateful to have such great spaces to be active in. We are very appreciative of the outstanding support that we have from external coaches, instructors and teachers. Our students will benefit greatly from their knowledge and expertise. Whilst we are still only in the initial stages of the Active Afternoons program and we expect it to continue to grow and develop, it is important to acknowledge the enormous amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes to get everything in place. We are very thankful to our Heads of Sport, Mrs Nelson and Mr Gardner, to the maintenance staff who have been preparing fields, moving equipment and fixing important items, to the staff who have supervised and led activities and to the students for embracing the program and cooperating with the activities. We look forward to adding some more activities for the students as the equipment arrives and when the seasons change. This includes the installation of the Frisbee (disc) Golf course on the Scots campus, continued development of the mountain bike tracks, table tennis tables, golf and swimming.

We again remind students about the uniform expectations for the Senior School on Tuesdays. The opportunity exists for students to attend school in their Winter Sports Uniform, however, student's must wear the SASC tracksuit pants and jacket with the optional winter coat. If you do not have this uniform, then come dressed in your normal school uniform and get changed into sports clothes for the Active Afternoon activity. The students are encouraged to dress in layers, particularly on expected cold days. Wearing a singlet or thermal underneath will make a huge difference. Cross Country Last Tuesday the Senior School students competed in the Cross Country. We thank them for their involvement and enthusiasm. There were certainly a lot of smiling faces as they ran the course. The opportunity to be active together was great and appreciated by both the students and staff. We congratulate the students that gained places in their races and to Cowan House on winning the House Competition for the Senior School races. The age champions are listed below. We have had some contact with both our local and school-based sporting associations. As you would most likely be aware, many of their decisions are dependent on the Government directives, restrictions and health advice given to them by their governing bodies. Locally, our soccer, netball and hockey associations are very hopeful of a short season and we will support them with team nominations. Similarly, the ISA are working through alternatives for a shortened rugby season. We hope to get more clarification from them in the final weeks of this term.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones
The Health Industry – Careers that make a difference! One industry that has been in the spotlight during this current pandemic is the Health industry. These recent times have highlighted how dependent we are on this industry and what stability and peace of mind it gives us as a community knowing we have access to such a professional, supportive and reliable health care service. The Health industry is predicted to have the greatest percentage growth rate over the next five years, providing 1.7 million jobs by 2024. The good news for our students is there is a massive range of different jobs within this sector that they can apply for at all different entry levels. You can start in a medical administration job straight out of school as a traineeship, finish a Certificate III in Human Services: Nursing as a HSC subject and be an Assistant in Nursing (AIN), go to University and become a paramedic or pharmacist, or study Undergraduate Medicine here in the Central West at CSU Orange Campus. The Health sector within Bathurst LGA is the largest employer of our residents (13.4% as of 2016). Jobs within this sector are not strictly all medical – we have archivists and records managers, commercial cleaners, program and project administrators, cooks, clerks, practice managers and Medical Lab Scientists to name a few. While there are set skills imperative to particular tasks, current employers are looking beyond these. It is important for workers in this industry to have key interpersonal skills like emotional intelligence, critical thinking, teamwork, communication, flexibility, stress tolerance and resilience. We work on these at school, to help identify and develop them within the individual to broaden their post school options and assist in the transition to post school life. Mentor/Networking Hannah Armstrong (ASC 2016) returned to the College to talk with our prospective Theatre Media students. Hannah is currently in her final year of this degree at CSU Bathurst and was able to allay any fears our students had about future studies. details and they are now on their way to having an interview for admission. Apprenticeships – Hutcheon and Pearce Matt Duffy, Apprentice Mentor at Hutcheon and Pearce presented the 2021 Apprenticeship program to interested students. The presentation was well received, with 21 students attending during lunchtime. Hannah gave generously of her time last week to meet with a group of our Year 12 students who are interested in applying for accommodation on Campus at UYSD. Hannah outlined the application process and what her experience to date has been. The girls enjoyed catching up with a past student and made the most of this time asking questions and gaining a glimpse into what life would be like living in Sydney. Subject Selection Year 10 Subject selection for Year 11 2021 is just around the corner and the choices regarding a student’s pattern of study can have an impact on their post school options – for example if a particular course has a prerequisite for entry. The University of Sydney is running an information session tonight for Year 10 students (Year 10 have been emailed these details). It will also be available to watch after the event. Ex-students talk about life changing experience Year 11 students passionate about science, technology, engineering and maths met with ex-students Elysia and Gabby to find out about the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). This youth-led program is a 10 day on-campus experience which gives students the chance to visit world-class facilities, participate in hands-on workshops and meet Australia's leaders in STEM. Gabby and Elysia spoke to the students about how valuable and life changing their 2018 NYSF experience was, particularly in
terms of future career choice and university entry. The students very much appreciated hearing about the benefits of the camp and are hopefully inspired to submit an application to NYSF and pursue a future career in the science, maths, engineering or technology fields. We thank Elysia and Gabby very

Creating habitat for native birds on campus
Pre-Kindergarten children on All Saints Campus took advantage of their spacious grounds to plant some Eucalyptus tree seeds. Students were surprised to learn how these tiny seeds will grow into the large gum trees that can be seen in the school grounds and native landscape providing shade for our students and habitats for local birds.
