Welcome to Winter The Central West has had its first official dumping of snow this week, just in time for the first day of Winter.

Some of our roads were blocked and a small number of students were not able to get to school.

If a road is blocked in the morning with snow or ice, our buses may not be able to get through to collect students for school. As it will be difficult to send out notifications at this time, I would encourage parents and carers to keep an eye on the weather so they will know this might be likely. It can be different for each area.

In the event of snow falling throughout the day, we will be guided by the advice of the police and local bus companies, who call all schools and let them know if they need to depart early to get students home. If this happens, we will notify families via Operoo as soon as possible. entertaining evening. You can expect orchestras, choirs and smaller ensembles – ending in a grand finale!

Tickets can be purchased on the BMEC website and will be very well worth it.

Equestrian team to Coona Thirty-five of our avid horse riders will be travelling to Coonabarabran with their horses this week to compete in Australia's largest interschool equestrian event.

Representing the College, they will be competing in a range of events: polocrosse, eventing, dressage, team penning, hacking, working horse challenge, cross country and showjumping.

This event is the culmination of many weeks and months of work for the students, staff and coaches and will be the highlight of the equestrian calendar. We wish them all a safe and successful trip.

100 years of praying!

“I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (John 14:13) Senior School Chapel this term has focused on ‘Christianity in Nazi Germany’. To date, we have looked at the stories of Marin Neimoller, Sophie Scholl, Elie Wiesel, and this week Corrie Ten Boom. During my research for Corrie Ten Boom, I discovered that her Grandfather Willem Ten Boom (1816-1891) started praying once a week for the Jewish people asking God how his family could be a blessing to them. He started in 1844. The practice was picked up by his son, Jasper, who continued to pray each week for the Jewish people after his father’s death. As a result of these weekly prayers, Jasper’s son, Willem (Jnr) completed his PhD in 1928 on ‘Jewish persecution in Germany and France’. However, the essence of Willem Snr’s prayer wasn't fully realised until 1940, when the Nazis invaded the Netherlands. As soon as this happened, the family started to live out their prayers by caring for and hiding Jewish individuals and families on the run.

After 100 years, the weekly family prayers for the Jewish people came to an end on 28 February 1944; the Gestapo barged into their house, where they were hiding Jews.

Corrie, her sister Betsie, father Jasper, and her brother Willem were all arrested. Only Corrie would survive the concentration camps, with Willem (Jnr) dying shortly after the war. Corrie would later start an international ministry sharing the good news about Jesus Christ and share some of the spiritual lessons she learned in the concentration camp.

What is interesting about Willem Snr’s prayer from 1844 is that it was answered in such an incredible way. It is estimated that the family saved around 800 Jewish lives by hiding them and then helping them escape Europe.

Several of the remaining family members have been given one of Israel’s highest honours for their work – “Honouring the Righteous Among the Nations”.

The Ten Boom story should make us pause and reflect upon what we are praying for. Our prayers are not always answered immediately and sometimes not in the way we might expect. Indeed, sometimes they are answered in ways far beyond our comprehension. Amen.

Use of Playground Equipment After School Could parents please refrain from allowing their children to play on the College’s playground equipment after 3:15 pm. There is no supervision of this equipment by staff after this time therefore, students should not be on the equipment.

Well, it is halfway through Term 2 and Year 6 are really starting to gain some momentum with the Peer Support program we are running at the Junior School. Year 6 are using the sessions to get to know the students from Kindergarten to Year 5, and by developing their relationships with their group members, they can use social interactions and connections to teach the message of accepting diversity and encouraging a sense of belonging at the College for all our students.

CIS Cross Country Congratulations to our runners who have earnt a place in the HICES team at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday, 8 June. We wish Nicolas Lenehan, Ella Hunter, Amelia Craft, Chelsea Abel, Sam Hunter, Jake Kearney, Benjamin Lenehan and Lucy Tallentire all the best as they compete next week at Eastern Creek.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival On Friday, 17 June, all of the Prep and Junior School students will be participating in the InterHouse Athletics Carnival. Parents are most welcome to come along and watch their children compete. As well as imparting the key message about antibullying during Peer Support, Year 6 are benefiting from the skills they are gaining as they learn to balance the younger students and coordinate a range of activities.

I congratulate Year 6 for the progress they are making with their groups and encourage them to continue to take advantage of the opportunity to lead these important sessions.

Year 10 Vaccinations Dear Parents and Carers, The NSW Health School Vaccination team will be attending Scots All Saints College on Tuesday, 7 June to administer scheduled Year 10 vaccinations. This vaccination is the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine and is a single-dose vaccine.

Consent forms will go home with your child today and need to be returned to the Health Centre ASAP. Vaccinations will not be administered to any student without valid consent. Please ensure your child is aware of the upcoming vaccinations.

Students attend mining dinner The world relies even more heavily than ever on a number of products dug from the Earth. For example, about forty different minerals are needed to produce a mobile phone. Whilst modern technology has put an end to the old image of mining of men with picks and shovels, modern mineral extraction still requires a large human workforce of highly skilled people to operate successfully.

The NSW Minerals Council has been hosting a series of dinners in regional New South Wales to provide information to people who might be contemplating a career in mining, and last week it was Bathurst’s turn. A number of Scots All Saints students attended.

The presentation was hosted by the Chief Executive of the Minerals Council, Stephen Galilee. A number of people who work in mines in the Central West told the story of their journey into the mining industry as apprentices in the many trades that are essential to the operations of a mine. Some of these people now have senior operational positions in local mines and have worked overseas. Two students from the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering also spoke. Several local mining companies had displays and representatives at the dinner.

The anecdote of the night concerns Scots All Saints Year 12 student Cody Green. Cody won the $100 voucher for the lucky door prize.

The UNSW team donated a computer. When the winner was drawn from the box by Stephen Galilee, he announced, “You’re not going to believe this, but the winner is Cody Green again.”

AICES Cross Country Yesterday our Senior School Cross Country team competed in the AICES Cross Country Carnival, which was held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

The team was faced with a number of challenging situations – snow, a closed Great Western Highway and the AM radio stations that I played in the bus.

Once on the track, the entire team competed incredibly well and were a credit to themselves and the College.

A special shout out to Emily Bennett, Lincoln Craft and Angus Argent-Smith, who secured a place in the AICES team to compete at next week’s CIS Cross Country Carnival at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Netball Coaching Clinics A few superstars from our SASC 1st Netball team will be hosting a special series of free Coaching Clinics for our 13s and 14s SASC teams. This is an awesome opportunity for your younger netballers to pick up a few handy hints and tips from some of our finest and most experienced Netballers. The clinics will be held on Mondays from 3.30 – 4:30 pm at the Senior Campus Netball courts. Here’s what we have in store…

1st XV Rugby Match Report Last Saturday, we travelled to the Central Coast to play our second ISA round match up versus Central Coast Grammar School. A formidable opponent who in the past has been very strong against us. The Open’s boys were dialled in and more than ready to play a tough contest. We had plenty of possession from the outset but just couldn’t capitalise on the many opportunities we had within striking distance of their try line. Central Coast would hit the board first with a soft try from 10 metres out. We settled back down into our style of play and again dominated possession. Our hard work paid off after an excellent box kick from Hamish Siegert, which set up a chase between Will Stanmore and the opposing fullback, with Will clipping him to snag the ball and go over for an outstanding try.

Central Coast came back again with a similar try to their first one. We reset and came storming back once again with a punishing carry by Hugh Argent-Smith as he crashed over the line for our second try. At the half, the game was even at 12 all.

In the second half, we came out strong and determined. We took the game to CCGS as we scored three more tries. The first one was by Jack Cooper off a set piece line out, then Ben Radford was set up with a selfless pass by Bill Bremner, and to round out the scoring, Angus Parsons split the defense up the middle with a slick 30 metre carry. CCGS did hit back with one try of their own but held our composure and committed ourselves to a strong defensive finish.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) 2023 Applications are now open for students who want to be a part of the National Youth Science Forum in 2023!

The NYSF Year 12 Program offers an exciting range of in-person and digital science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiences for participants across Australia. If you’re a year 11 student (in 2022) and passionate about STEM, apply now!

In 2023, the NYSF Year 12 Program will run from 10 to 24 January. Students will have opportunities to: •

participate in tours of science and technology facilities, and learn about cutting edge research;

engage with industry partners and research providers;

•

learn about university and STEM career pathways;

•

mix with other like-minded students from all over Australia; and

•

network with former NYSF participants to further increase understanding of STEM related study and career experiences.

NYSF offers Access and Equity Scholarships to students who require additional financial assistance due to experiencing financial or other forms of disadvantage or will incur additional costs to fully participate in the Year 12 Program. The 9/10 debating team of Jai Valabjee, Chido Mutyiri, Elizabeth Walsh and Hannah Howes.

HICES Debating Round 4

Over the last two weeks, debaters from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 have contested Round 4 of the HICES Debating Competition. The debates began on Thursday 19 May, with our 7/8 team of Stirling Miller, Suhaila Murshed, Olivia Mills and Margo Sawell tackling the topic of whether or not teachers should be paid more than politicians. Our opposition in Blue Mountains Grammar School mounted an impressive case to ultimately secure the win.

Next to debate were our Year 11 team of Jamie Healy, Xavier Adams and Jessica Mills. They faced off against Kinross Wolaroi School and grappled with the issues around indigenous representation in parliament. In an interesting and wide-ranging debate, both teams canvassed valid ideas, and Kinross came away with the win by a whisker.

Last but not least, our 9/10 team of Chido Mutyiri, Jai Valabjee, Elizabeth Walsh and Hannah Howes were impressive in a complex discussion of constitutional issues, defeating Kinross with style and flair. We now look forward to Round 5, which will determine if any of our teams progress into the knock-out phase of the competition.

JILL HODGES VISIT

In an issue of “The Roar” in 2021, the story was told of the Astley Sword of Honour, which was presented annually to the Cadet Unit Officer (C.U.O.) who had made the most notable contribution to the unit. The story behind the sword began with a tragedy: the death in an accident in 1972 of C.U.O. David Astley. To commemorate him, his mother donated the sword to the Cadet Unit. David was a very enthusiastic member of the Cadets, and the sword was a fitting memorial to him.

His classmates also donated the old lectern that was used in Aikman Hall for many years for assemblies, chapel services and other occasions. The first recipient of the Sword of Honour in 1973 was C.U.O. Phillip Gornall. It was presented every year from then onwards until 2018.

I am very lucky to have a number of spotters in the College who recognise items of value from the heritage of the campus, and Mr Justin Adams, in his capacity as Director of Extra Curricular Activities, spotted the sword in the Cadet Q Store in 2019. After some discussions between David Atley’s family and some past students, the sword was put on display in The Scots Museum.

Recently David Atley’s sister Jill Hodges paid us a visit to see it and the other items on display relating to the cadet unit. During the course of the visit, she offered to donate two items that belonged to her brother: his cadet hat and his Scots blazer. Both items were accepted, and our thanks go to Jill and her family for presenting their items to us.

In 2007, the Sword of Honour was presented to C.U.O. Stewart Legge, who led the Ceremonial Parade with it.

The Cadet hat the was issued to David Atley when he was a Sergeant in the Scots Cadets.

Bonjour Bathurst In this week’s episode of Bonjour Bathurst, we quizzed staff and fellow students in French as to their activities throughout their weekend. Year 12 students as always are a highlight and Monsieur Oakes amazed us with his eloquent accent. We may need to discuss a permanent role for him on the show.
