We have just passed the mid-point of the school term and I wish to acknowledge the support of all members of our College community for the successful way you are managing the ‘new normal’ for school operations. There has been and still is a considerable pressure on all of us to protect the health of our community. We must remain vigilant and disciplined as we continue to follow the health advice of our Governments’ health experts.

Extra Long Weekend The June Long Weekend will begin at 3:20 pm on Thursday, 4 June with all classes recommencing on Wednesday, 10 June.
We continue to check temperatures, practice social distancing, encourage frequent handwashing and undertake additional cleaning of classrooms, bathrooms and buses etc. Active Afternoons It has been great to see our students out on the ovals, in the gyms and in the open air enjoying some much longed for physical activity. In order to ensure an extremely high quality program for all students, we now welcome our new team of specialist instructors who bring their expertise to the program. Additionally, the College is purchasing a significant amount of additional sporting equipment and developing dedicated mountain bike riding and horse riding trails on both campuses. This is just the start of our new program!

with classes resuming on Wednesday, 10 June 2020. Boarding students will return to the boarding houses on Tuesday, 9 June 2020. Staff Changes After more than twenty years as Business Manager at The Scots School and now Scots All Saints College, Mr Noel Eveleigh will ‘log off’ on 6 July 2020. Mr Eveleigh has seen significant changes in his time at Scots All Saints and in the coming weeks, we will more fully acknowledge his contribution. Mr Matt Banning has been appointed as the new Business Manager for Scots All Saints College. Matt comes with extensive experience in both business and educational settings and has a close affinity with our region and the College. We welcome Matt to the College team!
Performing Arts Academy news
Year 11 and 12 music students complete regular composition exercises incorporating their knowledge and musical ideas into formal structures. It is a privilege to witness an idea evolve into a work of substance that is eventually ready for studio recording. Each week we will release a Stage 6 composition for your enjoyment displaying our student’s capacity to engage and create. There is something in the air! A wonderful buzz of excitement and harmony as the symphonic winds, big band, concert band, strings program and scores of other musical groups continue. I know I’ve said it before but the Performing Arts Academy is making some noise! You may have seen the Facebook post about the weekly Tech Teams who are busy learning about camcorders and capturing their video clips for their mockumentary. This is an amusing format where students explore an item in the documentary format but with a humorous angle. We will share their creations online with our community in the last week of term at our short film festival. Students are loving working with industry standard equipment and Mr Druitt. The Middle School Tech Team meets at lunch on Mondays and the Senior School Tech Team lunch on Wednesdays.

Personal Research Projects It has been fascinating to hear the diverse range of topics that students are immersing themselves in for their Personal Research Projects. All students should have settled on their topic by now and developed three questions that will help them deepen their understanding of their chosen area. Active Afternoons The campus was buzzing last Friday as students took part in their first ‘Active Afternoon.’ It was quite a sight from Watson Oval looking at all of the exciting activities taking place across the campus. Our mountain bikers enjoyed their work whilst our scooter riders learnt to jump on the tennis courts. Martial Arts held in the Library, and dance in the Performing Arts Centre, were a great thrill, whilst our Orienteerers used their sophisticated maps to make their way around the school. There was lots of strength and flexibility on show on Watson Oval for the Strength and Conditioning group. Our K-1 students enjoyed the ‘ninja’ obstacle course where they developed their coordination and balance. A massive thank you must go to Mrs Nelson for coordinating and to all the staff and specialists who assisted in leading each of the groups. See photos on the page 4. The Golden Rule Our Year 4 student leaders recently visited each of the Junior School classes to discuss the ‘Golden Rule.’ The ‘Golden Rule’ activity aims to encourage students to reflect on the saying ‘Treat others the way you would like to be treated.’ Our Year 4 leaders worked with students and developed many 'golden' statements as to what this might look like. It’s all about helping students learn about empathy and to be aware of how others might be feeling. One of the great things about our school structure is that Year 4 students have an opportunity to lead and they should be proud of the way they ran these sessions with confidence and clarity. Afternoon Carpark and Buses In order to better manage the carpark and bus movement after school we are changing some of the procedures. Any Junior School student being picked up by a parent who has parked in the carpark next to Esrom House (front reception) must wait near Esrom House and their parent must collect them and hold their hand to walk across the pedestrian crossing. Any Junior School students getting picked up by parents who have parked in the carpark across the road must wait for their parents out the front of Esrom House and be escorted there by them. We thank you for your assistance in ensuring the safety of our students. Home Reading I encourage all Junior School students to read every night. Many students have successfully read on more than 30 occasions to receive their bronze award and are on their way towards a silver. I think some students are looking towards that second badge at the end of the year. Keep up the reading everyone! continued page 3

Bounce Back The Bounce Back acronym encourages students to ‘bounce back’ after experiencing difficulties or challenges and 2020 has certainly thrown many of those at us. You might like to use the Bounce Back acronym to help your child with some of these bigger challenges that we have faced or even the smaller day to day challenges that come our way: Bad feelings go away again. Other people can help you feel better if you talk to them. Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset.

Think again. Nobody’s perfect - not you and not others. Concentrate on the things that you are still good at when things go wrong. Everybody has unhappy times sometimes, not just you. Blame fairly. How much of what happened was due to you, to others and to bad luck or circumstance? Accept what can’t be changed (but try and change what you can change first). Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture. Keep things in perspective. It’s only a small part of your life.

Pre-Kindergarten Scots Campus A Dinosaur Adventure It has been a busy start to Term 2 for Pre-K on the Scots campus. We have been exploring dinosaurs as our STEAM topic for the last five weeks. The children have been immersed in a world of dinosaurs, engaging in a variety of dinosaur activities involving arts & crafts, dramatic play, fossil alphabet letter, dinosaur digs and volcanic eruptions.
Handwashing
This term we have been putting a strong emphasis on good hygiene practices. We have especially been focusing on good handwashing techniques.
Autumn Fun!
The children were very excited to come back to school to discover that all the leaves had fallen from the trees in the playground. This made for a lot of fun throwing them up in the air, making giant birds nests and building huge mountains out of them.

Active Afternoons As you would be aware, we are introducing a new program called 'Active Afternoons’. This will take place on Fridays after lunch for the Junior School and on Thursdays after lunch for the Middle School. The aim of the program is to get our students active again following the Covid-19 enforced restrictions on community sport which will help improve their physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of recreational activities that fit within the guidelines of the Framework for Rebooting Sport in a Covid19 Environment as published by the Australian Institute of Sport. Students are able to wear full sport uniform (including their College tracksuit) on these days. Carpark and Bus Arrangements After School The wellbeing of our students and community members is of upmost importance to us and we are constantly reviewing systems and procedures to ensure best possible practice. In order to better manage the carpark and bus movement after school on the All Saints Campus we are changing some of the procedures to make it as safe as possible. The students have been advised of the following; 1. All students K-4 who are catching an inside bus are to meet the teacher on Inside Bus Duty at 3:20 pm at the 'Inside Bus K-4' sign out the front of Esrom House. 2. All students from Kindergarten to Year 8 who catch the outside bus are to meet the teacher on Outside Bus Duty at the 'Outside Bus' sign out the front of Esrom House at 3:30 pm. No students should walk directly out to the bus stop. They must wait to be accompanied by the teacher on duty.

3. All Middle School students catching an Inside Bus will line up at the end of the barrier (near where the College buses park). 4. Any Middle School students accessing the carpark closest to Esrom House must use the pedestrian crossing. Any MS children getting picked up from the carpark across the road must walk to the carpark via the pedestrian crossing. 5. Any Junior School student being picked up by a parent who has parked in the carpark next to Esrom House must wait near Esrom House and their parent must collect them and hold their hand to walk across the pedestrian crossing. Any JS students getting picked up by parents who have parked in the carpark across the road must wait for their parents out the front of Esrom House and be escorted across the crossing by them. There is a new barrier fence along the grass beside the carpark in order to direct people to use the pedestrian crossings. Please do not step over this fence. Temperature Checks At the beginning of the formal school day each student will continue to have their temperature taken. If your child is found to have respiratory symptoms or a temperature over 37.2 they will be referred to the health centre for a second review and in most instances you will be contacted to collect them. Drop off and Pick Up Procedures for Years 5-8 Please drop off and pick up as normal at your preferred location but do not leave your vehicle. Physical Education Uniform Students are able to wear their PE uniform on the day that they have their PE lesson to limit the need for students to enter the change rooms. This means that they should come to school in their College tracksuit with their sport shirt and shorts underneath. They can then take their tracksuit off for PE/sport if they wish. They should depart school in the afternoon wearing their tracksuit.

Welcome new students A warm welcome to the students who have joined the Senior School this week. As always we are thrilled to have new people join our Learning Community. Active Afternoons - Cross Country The Senior School commenced our new ‘Active Afternoon Program’ this week with the long awaited Year 9-12 Cross Country. The recent Year 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews were successfully held via Zoom and our plan is to do the same with the Year 11 Interviews. It makes returning items to the owner an easier experience for all.

Providing a strong foundation for learning Scots All Saints College prides itself on giving students the best possible start to a lifelong love of learning from Pre-Kindergarten. In recognition of the experience, dedication and care taken by Pre-K teachers to provide a strong foundation for learning for so many local young children over the years.
We wanted to profile Mrs Jennie White and Mrs Sally Parsons. Mrs White started the PreKindergarten program at Scots Campus in 2000 and has taught Pre-K for 11 years. She is now in her tenth year teaching. Mrs Sally Parsons has been with the
College for 12 years and is currently teaching the 4 and 5 day class at the All Saints Campus in PreKindergarten. Their pride, passion and commitment to our children’s education is evident in these short profile pieces.
Mrs Jennie White – Kindergarten teacher (started in 2000) It has been a great privilege to teach Pre-K and Kindergarten at Scots All Saints College over the past 20 years. To engage students at the beginning of their lifelong journey of learning is so important. Building foundations to foster children’s inquiring minds and to motivate them to explore the world around and create a desire to learn is very rewarding. Seeing those 'light bulb' moments when they learn a new concept or skill, start to read and write, or learn strategies to build friendships and become part of a group or team brings satisfaction. Nurturing confidence in students
to try new things, even difficult things and embrace all areas of the curriculum is important. I have valued providing opportunities for students to explore their own beliefs and the Christian values our school embraces. There is nothing more fulfilling for me as a teacher than to see students I have taught in Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten, find and develop their strengths and reach their full potential – whether that be in Public Speaking, Sport, Music or Agriculture. To see these young adults that started with me on their learning journey become confident and ready
to face an ever changing world and become kind and caring citizens – this to me is what teaching is all about.

Mrs Sally Parsons – Pre-Kindergarten Teacher (started in 2008) Pre-Kindergarten is a truly unique program designed specifically to bridge the gap between Early Years Learning and Kindergarten. It combines all the best elements of play, creativity, learning and care with essential school readiness skills that are often overlooked. Children learn vital skills such as participating in groups, rhythms and routines, self-care, independence skills, thoughtfulness towards others, thankfulness, completing tasks, respect and following whole class directions. These foundations are nurtured in all areas including literacy, numeracy, fine motor, gross motor, creative arts and STEM activities. I am so proud of the amazing opportunity we have in this setting to provide this engaging and effective school readiness program and that it is so recognisable by Kindergarten teachers. It is also such a thrill seeing the children I taught many years ago now in their senior years and thriving.

Celebrating continuity of education from Pre-K to Year 11 and 12 Our students are fortunate to be able to start learning at Scots All Saints in Pre-K and continue through to their HSC. They may switch campuses throughout their learning journey but they are safe and secure in the same nurturing education environment with the same strong values and connections and a wonderful College community backing and supporting them all the way.

"I remember starting and being so unbelievably excited that I could finally go to 'big school'. "The biggest lesson I have learnt from my years at the school is that the more time and effort you dedicate to something, the greater the reward. This applies to any aspect of the College, from sport, arts, academics and to the relationships I’ve formed. "What I have enjoyed the most is growing up in a positive environment, alongside my best friends and genuinely looking forward to coming to school each day."
"I remember the supportive community of teachers when I first started Pre-K. "Throughout my time at the school, I have learnt that everyone is a unique individual with their own strengths. I have very much enjoyed the relationships I have developed with my peers and teachers throughout my time at the school."
"What I can remember is that I had my mum, Mrs Porter, as my teacher for Pre-Kindergarten as she taught the 3 day class at the time. Having my mum as my teacher was very special for my first year. I also remember quickly becoming friends with both Kate and Ben, who were also in the 3 day class, and Natalia who was in the 5 day class. They are still my friends to this day. Other special memories are our visit to the Bathurst Fire Station, Princess and Pirate Day, presenting news to the class every week and taking turns looking after 'Buddy Bear' our class mascot. "One of the biggest lessons I have learnt from my time at Saints is the importance of community. "What I have enjoyed most about school is the friendships I have been able to make and the immense amount of knowledge, both academic and general life lessons, that have been given to me by staff, coaches and other members of the Saints community."

Austin Markwick "I vividly recall the initial trauma of leaving my Mum in the morning, but I quickly settled into Pre-K as I began to explore the expansive realms of the Toy and Craft Room and wreaked havoc in the playground! "Reflecting on my 13-year endeavour at both the Scots School and now Scots All Saints College, I am appreciative of the multifaceted educational experience that I have been provided that has introduced me to countless friends and ways to view the world around me as I transition into adulthood. "The most valuable lesson that I have learnt during my schooling experience is to embrace every moment by grasping every opportunity available as the entire journey will be over before you know it." Belinda Kidd "When I started Pre-K, I remember spending time with the Year 5 students making different arts and crafts. One of the biggest lessons I have learnt from the school is to take the opportunities you can and try different things as you never know what you’re going to like or be good at. "One of the highlights of my school life have been spending time with friends and being part of many different Co-curricular activities."
National Simultaneous Story Time at Lithgow Campus Students at the Lithgow campus participated in National Simultaneous Story Time on Wednesday. They listened to the story Whitney and Britney Chicken and Divas and then created a fabulous craft work to match.

Student writing In Year 11 Modern History we are studying The Decline and Fall of the Romanov Dynasty. As part of a class exercise exploring the experiences of Russian soldiers in World War I, Jessica Settree wrote this poem: Dear Mama, it’s me, I swear I tried To fight for Russia; the Tsar by my side. It’s cold and it’s wet and I feel so alone, Dear Mama it’s me and I want to come home.
Dear Sister, she nurses the soldiers when hurt; She carries them away from the bloodstained dirt. With scalpels and sutures she mends those young boys Like so long ago when she stitched me rag toys.
Dear Papa, he fought and I think he too fell Through the ruby snow of this rattling hell. I hope he is safe and I hope he is sound And I hope he sleeps peacefully on this cursed ground.
Dear Mama, it’s me and I can’t hold on, In the noise and the night, I think I’m long gone. Dear Mama, it’s me, I swear I’ve tried. But Mama, your son, I think I’ve died.
