Out and about with the Headmaster Mr David Gates

The Term Two Parent Weekend is coming up this Saturday and Sunday with the main focus being on Scots Campus for this term. The key aim of the Parent Weekend is for staff, parents and students to come together and make an extra special effort to celebrate as a community. The boarding families particularly make an effort to join with us and it provides an opportunity for parents to get to know each other better and to feel a part of this special community.

In addition to sport involving all students from both campuses, there are a number of special events on Scots Campus over the weekend as follows: • Year 12 Parent Teacher Night Friday 24 May from 3:30 pm.

• David & Gillian Gates’ College Farewell on Saturday 25 May from 6:00 pm in the Dining Hall.

• Foundation Day Chapel on Sunday 26 May at 9:30 am in the Aikman Hall, Scots Campus.

The Senior School Athletics Carnival on Tuesday was an outstanding day in so many ways. It was a real privilege to watch students throwing themselves into their events with great gusto, whilst having a lot of fun too. I certainly enjoyed chatting to students and staff and feeling very proud of our new College.

I particularly wish to thank all the staff who officiated on the day and Mr Scott Gardner for his organisation.

I also wish to thank the House Captains who have done so much this year to build the new House Spirit with five new names for the houses.

The uniform shop based on All Saints Campus will be open this Saturday from 9:00 am - 12 noon to assist boarding and out of town families who will be in Bathurst for the Parent Weekend.

I particularly wish to thank the uniform shop employees, Amanda, Tracey and Dominique who have been going above and beyond to assist students with accessing the uniform shop. They have offered a pop up uniform shop at recess one day a week in Reception at the Scots Campus, delivered uniform requirements to boarders in the Dining Hall at dinner time and spent Saturday morning for the first rugby home game ensuring every rugby player ran on in the new jersey.

The date for the Highland Jazz Night has been changed to Saturday 15 June. This is to ensure it coincides with a home Rugby fixture so that performers are easily able to play Rugby and perform at the Highland Jazz Night. The Aikman Hall is usually full to capacity for this occasion. The Highland Jazz Night showcases our Pipes and Drums, Highland Dancers and some of our music students. It is quite an informal night where guests are seated at tables of 8-10 with food and drinks brought by the guests.

Supper can also be purchased from the server. This is advance notice of the new date but please look out for advertisements in The Roar over the next few weeks and join with family and friends for a wonderful night out.

Often, I hear teachers and parents encourage their children: “Make good choices!”

In the second creation account, the Heavenly Father instructed His created son to do just this!

Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground – trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil… The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden – except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” Genesis 2:8-9,

Students excel at CWA Public Speaking Competition On Tuesday 21 May, seven students from Years 7-11 competed in the CWA Public Speaking Competition at James Sheahan Catholic High School.

Paige Hatton, Zanthie Hewett and Jai Valabjee spoke in the Junior Division. They had a lot of competitors compared to the other divisions and Zanthie received a Highly Commended.

In the Intermediate Division the College was represented

by Austin Markwick and myself. Austin won second place.

Stella Gavey and Natalia Burgess spoke in the Senior Division and Stella was awarded with second place. We had a great time, made some new friends and learnt a lot from other speakers. We are also grateful to Miss Hodge and her passion for Public Speaking.

Literature Festival – space to read 17, 18 and 19 June 2019 As part of the College's Literature Festival we would like to introduce another two of our guest presenters.

Paul McDonald Paul has a Master of Education, working almost 20 years as a teacher of Upper Primary and Secondary.

He has won numerous awards in teaching such as a Quality Teacher Award, The Premier’s English Scholarship and awards for his coordination of Regional Shakespearean Festivals. His interests include the development of literacy with a particular interest in reading for gifted children, boys’ literacy and books for adolescents.

Paul won the inaugural Maurice Saxby Award in 2012 for his contributions to raising the profile of teen fiction. Paul Macdonald also was the winner of the 2016 Lady Cutler award for services to children's literature and literacy in Australia. Paul was also nominated as Bookseller of the Year in 2018.

Paul will be speaking about teen and young adult fiction for Years 7-10 and conducting writing workshops with our Year 11 students.

Christine Sams Now an English teacher at Scots All Saints College, Christine Sams has worked as a journalist for more than two decades for newspapers including The Sun-Herald, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.

Specialising in entertainment writing, she spent years interviewing and writing about high-profile musicians and actors, ranging from Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe to Rihanna and The Rolling Stones.

Christine also travelled to many parts of the world on assignment as a journalist.

She will share her skills in news and feature writing, opinion writing and how to create a story which always keeps your readers interested.

42nd Highland Society Debutante Ball Forty four Year 11 students took part in the Highland Society Debutante Ball on Saturday 11 May. Students learnt 12 traditional Scottish dances over 10 weeks in the lead up to the event.

The debutantes and their partners were presented to Scots All Saints College Headmaster David Gates before a packed auditorium at Bathurst Panthers.

Special Memorial Service for Eric Matheson A special Memorial Service for Eric Matheson was held at the College Chapel, Scots All Saints College on Friday, 17 May 2019.

Eric, who served on the All Saints' College Council for 32 years, passed away on 28 February 2019 at the age of 83.

He was a student at All Saints' College for five terms from 1952-1953. He was a Prefect and House Captain in 1953.

Sweet success for Mock Trial Team The Scots All Saints Mock Trial team celebrated another win after defeating Katoomba High School in Round 3 of the statewide competition.

The contest took place at Bathurst Court House and our team acted on behalf of the Plaintiff in a case where a person slipped over on a coffee spill in a major shopping centre.

For this round, the team consisted of George Butler and Simi Atluri as barristers, Morgan Watts as solicitor, Callum Duncan-Keen and Taylah Cooper as witnesses and Jonah Siede as magistrate’s clerk.

They were supported in court by other team members including Jack Van Yzendoorn, Robert Jeffries and Oscar Stocks.

After winning the case by a resounding 15 points, the Scots All Saints team celebrated in the stunning traditional precinct of Bathurst Court House and nearby Machattie Park.

Eric was a member of the Committee of the Old Bathurstians' Union and was one of the first Trustees and Directors of the All Saints' Foundation. He first joined the College Council in 1983 and was a member of its Finance and Development Committee.

Eric is survived by his wife Meriam, daughter Amanda and son Angus.

HICES Debating Round Four Last Friday 17 May, debaters from both the All Saints and Scots campuses traveled to Kinross Wolaroi School to compete in the fourth round of the HICES Debating competition. The Scots All Saints College junior team consisting of Tyler Copson, Imogen Ellis, Rohan Lesh and Lily Gray debated the topic 'That advertising specifically aimed at children should be banned’ against their opposition from Blue Mountains Grammar School.

Scots All Saints College argued the negative side of the case with a series of well executed points but were ultimately defeated by their opponents.

Three senior teams also represented the College tackling the topic 'That social media companies should be doing more to remove hate speech.'

Sophie Cox, George Butler, Simi Atluri and Austin Markwick faced off against Blue Mountains Grammar School and were victorious in a tightly contested argument which saw both teams on equal points at the debate’s conclusion with our team snaring the win for their cohesive case.

Keeran Rajkumar, Belinda Kidd, Jessica Settree and Robert Jeffries also met Blue Mountains Grammar School in this round but were unable to execute a win this time around. Isobelle Sotter, Charlotte Russell, Digby Sharpham and Jonah Siede were comprehensive in their victory over Kinross Wolaroi School and both winning senior teams will now progress to the elimination finals in June. We wish them all the very best of luck!

Language Club

Students from the Middle School have been meeting each week at Tuesday lunchtime to further develop their French skills.

We look forward to the study of Molière, a playwright and France’s equivalent to Shakespeare, in the coming weeks.

We have discovered TV Cinq Monde, a French TV channel that has created an interactive website for learners of French. We watched, listened and translated with some assistance, a report on the importance of French in the 21st century. We recognise that with persistence learning French is within our reach.

Another initiative of Language Club is to enter the Alliance Française Cultural competition, enabling us to apply our language skills to a creative and fun project. There are three categories – CINÉ, PHOTO and CHANSON (cinema, photo and song).

Come along to find out more.

Jacque Prevert is the first French poet whose work we are studying. Dejeuner du matin is written in the present tense, which reflects what we are studying in class.

Although the language is simple the poet expresses more complex themes. It has enhanced our French vocabulary greatly.

We meet on Tuesday's at recess so it does not clash with other school activities.

Bell Shakespeare Visit

The renowned Shakespeare company Bell Shakespeare visited both Bathurst campuses today for three performances.

The Middle School enjoyed Just Romeo and Juliet, a comic re-telling of Shakespeare’s tragic lovers told through the eyes of children’s author Andy Griffiths. Students had an absolute blast as the players brought these 400 year old characters to life.

Following this, the players travelled across town to Scots Campus to entertain and inform the Senior School. The Year 9 and Year 10 students enjoyed the show Words, Words, Words which gave an insight into some of Shakespeare’s more tragic works such as Macbeth and Hamlet. This performance essay really engaged with language and its impact, particularly in story and on the stage.

To wrap things up, Year 11 and Year 12 students viewed Shakespeare The Human Experience. This is a take on the compulsory Common Module that students work with in Year 12, regardless of whether or not they study his work specifically for the exam. The Human Experience story has a grounding in Shakespeare’s work and this concept was brought to life by this incredible work.

It was truly a wonderful day that enriched and enlightened our students across the spectrum of two of the schools in our College.

Student writing Anecdote A ricochet of clicks and snaps echoed through the room and muffled chatter filled the air.

Competitors’ names rang over the speakers: “Jake, to the blue stage, you’re late!”, and on the stage the hands of the competitors flew over their Rubik’s cube's, like human machines, cogs turning at an unfathomable pace. My name was called out: “Harrex!”.

I was hustled over to a table, on which sat a timer, mat and display, along with a volunteer with a stopwatch in his hand. He asked; “You ready?” in a casual, bored tone. I nodded and he lifted a cup to reveal my cube, scrambled into a jumbled mess of colours.

I now had fifteen seconds to look over the puzzle and think about my first few moves. Turning the cube over in my hand, I inspected the colours, found the one I needed to put into place first, and concocted a plan. The next few seconds were a blur of finding pieces and working out what I needed to do until I heard, “Eight seconds!” from somewhere off to my side. I kept searching and finally came up with something of a plan as I heard, “Twelve seconds!”. Time to go.

I slammed the cube onto the table with a crash that snapped through the hall, bringing my hands down onto the table with enough force to shake the table, and looked at the display. 32.17. I stepped back off the stage, drumming my fingers against my thighs. Four more solves to go.

I carefully placed the cube down onto the mat, placed both hands on the timer and took a breath. I picked up the cube and executed the plan I had created in inspection. So far, so good. The cross was finished and I had located my first corner and its matching piece. I paired them up and carefully inserted so as not to disturb the cross I had already completed. I finished the next three as carefully as I could, while still moving fast and was onto the second half of the method.

Now, the last layer; the only thing separating me from slamming my hands onto the timer. I flipped the cube over in my hands so that I could clearly see the yellow side and began to execute an algorithm to twist the corners and edges so they would all face the same way and the yellow side would be finished.

Amadeus Academy Hits Right Note

Monday, 20 May was an important day for our new Music Department as they hosted the launch of the new College Amadeus Academy for gifted and talented music students.

During the day, internationally acclaimed Australian pianist, Aura Go, presented a workshop and masterclass to our music students on All Saints Campus. Aura presented some of her solo repertoire and discussed how the structure of the music helps inform her performance practice. Her performance of Grey Ghost by Miriama Young combined with Djilile

by Peter Sculthorpe was especially captivating for the students as it included an interactive performance with the students playing a digital soundscape.

During the evening Scots Campus Performing Arts Centre was transformed for the Amadeus Academy launch and concert.

Over 100 people attended the event including special guests from the College and wider Bathurst music communities, as well as staff and students from across the College.

The evening began with canapes enjoyed by all in the Performing Arts Centre accompanied by the College Senior String Quartet – Sam Lloyd, Bella Taylor, Prue Inwood and Charlotte Russell.

The official concert commencement was heralded by the traditional Piper Welcome provided by Jack McCudden from Year 9.

During the concert the audience was entertained by Emma Russel (Year 12), Isabel Randall (Year 8) and Charles Croaker (Year 4), performing alongside our special guest artist, Aura Go. Aura again mesmerised and captivated the audience with her rendition of Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque. Aura’s down to earth manner and personable interactions with the audience saw everyone enjoy the evening.

Mr Greg Jones (Head of Academic Excellence & Compliance), Mr Phil Cant (Coordinator of Enrichment and Learning Support) and Ms Liz Sargeant (Amadeus Academy Coordinator) also spoke during the evening on the role the new Academy will play in the lives of talented and committed music students at the College.

How Long have you played for: 11 Years.

How long have you coached netball?

35 years and I am hoping to finish my advanced coaching accreditation with this year’s SASC 1st VII.

Favourite Position: Centre.

Favourite Player: Kim Ravaillion (Magpies).

Favourite Health Food: Berry Smoothie.

The best thing about netball: Making new friends.

Sami Mitchell SASC Team: SASC 16 Navy.

How Long have you played for: 10 Years.

Favourite Position: Goal Defence.

Favourite Health Food: Pineapple.

The best thing about netball: Pushing myself to do my best.

Favourite netball team? NSW Giants because I believe Julie Fitzgerald is a great coach.

Shannyn Neville SASC Team: SASC 16 Navy.

How Long have you played for: 4 Years.

Favourite Position Goal Keeper.

Favourite Health Food: Basically any kind of fruit.

Favourite Player: Lauren Moore (Swifts).

The best thing about netball: Watching our team improve each week.

What is the best thing about coaching? I love working with athletes with all abilities and see them improve. My mentor Marj Parr is the NSW U19 state coach and Head Coach of Panthers Premier League. I attend training sessions to help develop my skills and continue learning.

A coach that inspires you? My mentor makes me feel good and encourages me that I am going down the right track. I also admire two football coaches Craig Bellamy and Tim Sheens. Their philosophy is to do the basics well then when under pressure it comes naturally. I am a true believer in this approach.
