Humility and the BIG clean up I hope all the mums in our community had a wonderful Sunday. For my wife Melanie, things did not turn out as planned. On Friday, she was expecting the arrival of her mother and sister.

They were driving across from Canberra and were planning to spend the weekend with us. So Melanie walked over to our outside flat to set it up for her mum and sister. When she opened the door, she was overwhelmed by a horrible stench.

The sewage pump in the septic tank had failed and sewage had come up through the bathroom drain and spread throughout the flat. Everything was wet and putrid.

When I arrived home after work, the foul scene lay before me – this was the last thing I wanted to confront at the end of the week. I stared into the space and I have to confess it did cross my mind to just burn the whole place down. But since I could still see some value in retaining the flat, Mel and I began the task of cleaning up the mess.

It was an incredibly humbling experience moving furniture, cutting and rolling up carpets, and mopping the floors. By the end of a late night, I felt as if I was ‘Andy Dufresne’, from the movie Shawshank Redemption, after he had escaped through the pipe from Shawshank Prison.

As I reflect on this story, it occurred to me it could be considered as a modern parable, relating to Genesis 2 and 3 – the Adam and Eve story. In these chapters, God created a perfect world.

Adam and Eve then chose self-interest over following their Creator and they and the environment suffered as a result. Sin spreads throughout creation like sewage through a flat.

The perfect God, holy and pure, could have hit the reset button and started again. But he didn’t. In Genesis 3:15, God declares a promise to us all, that he shall save us from ourselves and the effects of sin. He shall clean up this mess that sin and self-interest has created. Indeed, not only shall he clean up the mess, he shall get ‘soiled’ in the process and die. This does not mean that God’s character and nature are affected, but rather he enters into the aftermath and sorts it all out.

Why does God enter the mess? Because we are of great value to him. Our value does not come from the things we do or say, but rather our value comes from him – he adores each one of us. And he wants to engage with each one of us from now into eternity.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Start Failing Sooner Michael Jordan missed more than 9,000 shots during his career. He lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions he was trusted to take the game-winning shot – and missed. He admits to failing - over, and over, and over again. And he is adamant that this is why he succeeded.

The concept of an 'overnight success' is a myth and belittles the necessary effort. When we see someone succeed, what we see is the visible part of the iceberg that has contributed to that person’s success. What we do not see is the dedication, the hard work, the discipline and sacrifice, the failures and their accompanying disappointments. We do not see the persistence required to continue in spite of these failures.

Whatever the skill, practice is necessary in order to approach and achieve mastery. Research shows that effective practice is consistent, intensely focused, and targets content and weaknesses that lie at the edge of one’s current abilities. Basketballers who can already shoot effectively inside the key will not develop their games by continuing to practice shots from that area.

They need to push outside their comfort zone, into a challenge zone which is further from the basket. It is inevitable that they will miss some shots – and this is where persistence is needed to push through the disappointments until their success rate slowly improves. I remember going to Bathurst Show and the Royal Easter Show and seeing the first year that freestyle motorbike riders were landing single back-flips; nowadays doubles are the norm – back and front. This progress has resulted from individuals choosing to continually push their challenge zones over time.

The same rules that apply to physical skills apply to academic skills. If our students and children are not

failing, they are not being challenged. A good mathematics textbook exercise will continually challenge students – just a little extra in each question – in order to assist them to build their capacity within the concept being targeted.

I am privileged to work with seven Year 12 students as an academic mentor. I recently met with each student’s family via Zoom to discuss their progress in subjects. The starting points for these discussions were the individual subject reports written by teachers at the midpoint of the HSC year. In every report, the teacher highlighted areas of success for the student. Just as importantly, the teacher also indicated areas lying at the edge of the student’s capabilities – inviting the student into their individual challenge zone to build their capacity. These invitations were made with the reassurance of guidance and support from the teacher.

As teachers and parents, we need to acknowledge the worth of allowing our students and children to fail.

We should rightly celebrate their successes, but we also need to appreciate failed attempts when these occur within the child’s challenge zone. With our guidance and reassurance, they will become more comfortable about persisting in the challenge zone in all of their areas of endeavour. They will fail their way to success.

Bathurst Regional Youth Council 2021/22 Applications are now open for the Bathurst Regional Youth Council 2021/22. The Bathurst Regional Youth Council provides a key link between young people in the Bathurst Region, the Bathurst Regional Council and other youth service providers in the region.

Being a part of the Youth Council involves attending regular meetings, voicing your ideas, developing and working on projects, promoting the work of the Youth Council and assisting with the running of Youth Council events.

The Youth Council has organised several events in recent years, including music events, Food & Flix outdoor cinema and How to Adult workshops at TAFE, as well as other community initiatives. The Youth Council is involved with various community events including Grandparents Day, Harmony Day, International Women’s Day and celebrations at the Kelso Community Hub.

Your friend and mine, Mr Gillmer, kicked off his Run Club this week on our Senior Campus.

We had a great turnout of students who are all looking to get an edge in the lead up to our Senior Athletics Carnival on Thursday 27 May.

Following last week’s Mother’s Day breakfast, our Prep and Kindergarten students competed in their Cross Country Carnival. Our Prep students handled our obstacle course with ease.

Mr Gilmer, who specialises in Triathlon and middle distance running, will share some hints and tips over the next two Tuesdays from 3.30 – 4.15pm. The sessions are free!

If your child is interested, please feel free to send me an email or ask them to speak to Mr Gillmer directly for more details.

A special thank you goes to all the parents who cheered these awesome youngsters on as well as our fantastic Year 7 ‘Buddies’ who quite literally showed them the way! (More photos are on page 12).

Another one of our Equestian agistee's out competing Mia Baggett (Year 11) recently competed at the Sydney International Three Day Event held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre on the 6-9 May 2021.

Classes ranged from 60cm through to Olympic Level CCI4* with some of Australia's best Olympic hopefuls such as Shane Rose, Stuart Tinney, competing before Tokyo selections.

Mia and Simba competed in the CCN1* starting with the Dressage on Friday. The weather conditions were very wet and there were plenty of bugs, which unfortunately inhibited Mia's dressage score.

On the Saturday, Mia and Simba headed out with 50 other competitors in 1* X country, with conditions very boggy and tough. Simba was amazing in the mud and they came back clear, only adding a 0.4 time penalty to their score. Simba, although pretty tired, passed the vet trot up and was able to show jump on Sunday morning. They show jumped in the main arena, which was a real buzz with the grandstands full of spectators and plenty of atmosphere. Simba jumped amazing, just getting two rails down at the end of the round. In the end Mia and Simba finished in 11th place and 6th in the Juniors.

2021 SASC Literature Festival – ‘Space for Stories’ June 7, 8 and 9

An introduction to two more of our presenters:

Phillip Gwynne

Phillip Gwynne was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and grew up in rural areas in Victoria and South Australia.

He graduated from James Cook University with a degree in marine biology. He also pursued a career as a computer programmer.

He came to professional writing later in life and wrote his first novel at the age of 35.

His award-winning novel Deadly Unna won Children’s Book of the Year in 1998 and was made into a feature film Australian Rules in 2002. Deadly Unna also won him the 1999 Children’s Peace Literature Award.

James Knight

James was raised in Gunnedah, country NSW. He began his media career as a radio journalist in another bush town, Dubbo, in 1988.

Since then he has been incredibly lucky to have worked in many far-flung places across the world.

James says that his experiences have shown him that people make the place.

He feels privileged to meet people, listen to them, and be trusted by them to tell their stories responsibly.

National Simultaneous Storytime in space is another exciting event happening in our Junior School Library on 19 May. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. 2021 will be the 21st year of the campaign.

NSS is a colourful, vibrant, fun event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.

This year’s event is set to be the most exciting year yet.

The book, Give me some space! written and illustrated

by Philip Bunting, will be read by an astronaut from the International Space Station on Wednesday 19 May 2021 at 11:00 am.

We are embarking on a collection of wonderful interviews with French speakers who have led colourful lives. By sharing their individual stories, they encourage the important and enriching benefits of having another language.

Next week we travel through Zoom to chat with Annabelle Hickson, a journalist, podcaster and gifted photographer who has taken her passions and dreams and made them her career. She also has her very own publication, GALAH, which celebrates regional Australia.

Annabelle was very generous to spend some time with “Bonjour Bathurst”.

Annabelle lives on a pecan farm with her husband, three children and various animals and in her own words ‘enjoys helping others appreciate and celebrate what is beautiful and interesting in their daily lives, when so much can feel repetitive, mundane and ordinary’.

"Fighting the Kaiser" a compelling and moving performance The Year 9 students were treated to a compelling and moving performance by Mr Glen Phillips from the Troubadour Theatre last Friday.

The presentation was called "Fightin' the Kaiser" and was based upon the experiences of an ANZAC veteran during The Great War. Clearly struggling from his experiences, he recounted the mateship, heartache and hardships encountered both on and off the battlefield.

Using meticulously researched materials from diaries, letters and official histories, through to songs and poems of the day, the students were taken on a one hour periodic journey in which they could not help but emphasize with those sent overseas to fight and die for their country. It was a fine performance with the students thoroughly engaged throughout. I am confident that it will greatly benefit their studies of both world wars this year.

Last Friday 7 May, 32 HICES Debaters from the Junior, Middle and Senior School embarked on a trip to Blue Mountains Grammar School to contest the second round of HICES Debating. The day involved prepared debates for the students in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 and impromptu debates for those in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12. The topics were wide ranging and required the students to engage with an array of current issues from voting rights to border security. The students all acquitted themselves with aplomb, and it was very pleasing to see them grow in confidence and skill.

The Year 5 team of Nate Grabham, Soana Finau, Georgia Rennie and Emily Nicholl took on Kinross Wolaroi School and were narrowly defeated in a closely contested debate. The Year 6 team of Margaret McCusker-Roth, Grace Byrnes, Nolan Stafford and Charlotte Bateman were bested by Blue Mountains Grammar School in a hard fought debate while Eliza Rennie, Suhaila Murshed, Gracie Morse and Olivia Mills of Year 7 were also unlucky to lose their round to Kinross Wolaroi School. Representing Year 8, Tyler Copson, Angus Dowton, Deliah Wu and Isabella Irvine rose to the challenge and gave Kinross Wolaroi School plenty to think about in their narrow loss.

Hannah Howes, Brooke Davies and Eloise Fairley executed a convincing win over their opposition from Macquarie Anglican Grammar School, while the Year 10 contingent of Xavier Adams, Jamie Healy, Ella Kay and Kitty Sharpham were unlucky to lose their debate to Kinross Wolaroi School. As the day of competition drew to a close, there was a loss for the newly formed team of Dusty Fitzpatrick, Rebecca Howes, Alexandra Strutt and Hannah Lambert of Year 11,

while the Year 12 debating stalwarts Callum Duncan-Keen, Simi Atluri, Jonah Siede and George Butler made sure of victory in their contest with Blue Mountains Grammar School.

Overall, a very successful day of debating was enjoyed by all and Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Nicholls look forward to hosting the third round at Scots All Saints College in early June.

From the All Saints' Archives DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD Amongst some of the treasures in the archives we have discovered an Honour Board titled ‘Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award’ and also a photo album with photos of the Duke’s visit to Bathurst and Marsden School on the 26th October 1973. On that day he presented fifteen Marsden girls with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards.

On the Honour Board there are names of thirty-one girls who completed the program in the years 1972 to 1975.

Since then as Marsden was amalgamated with All Saints’ the program stopped for a period of time until the 1990s when it began under the management of teacher Trevor Hegvold and parent Lee Steele.

Over the next 15 years, many students joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and completed various stages. From our records held here, we have found twentytwo completed the program and received their Gold Awards. We would like to add their names to this Honour Board as a historical record. As we are relying on the records here and those kept at the Head Office of Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards in Sydney, we would like to make sure we have all the names of the Gold Recipients and the dates completed. If you have completed the Gold Award, please contact us here at All Saints’ Archives so we can make sure we have your name for the Honour Board before we arrange to complete the list.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, Whilst COVID-19 remains relatively settled in NSW, it’s still important that we be vigilant.

With this in mind, I would like to remind you all that The College, in line with NSW Health regulations, still requires all staff and students with symptoms of COVID-19 to stay at home, be tested and forward their negative COVID test to the Health Centre prior to returning to school.

We realise that with the Cold and Flu season just around the corner this will create some inconvenience for families, but if we all hold on for just a little bit longer, we will be better for having done so.

Regarding activities, excursions and sporting fixtures held outside of Bathurst. It is again, our intention to follow the guidelines of the NSW Government regarding travel to Sydney and other locations. In the event that there are cases of community transmission of COVID-19 in NSW, we will be extremely careful not to place members of the College and Bathurst communities at risk. However, we also wish for our students to receive the full benefits of these activities where possible.

We will continue to monitor community transmission locations and case numbers and where necessary will make careful risk assessments, if the risk is unacceptable we will cancel or postpone activities but if the risk is very low or negligible, we will put extra precautions in place and will proceed as planned.

Please don’t look at what other schools in our region are doing as an indicator of what we will do. We have our own team of advisors both inside of and external to the College and will make an independent assessment based on the variables that apply only to Scots All Saints.
