A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

REBOOTING SPORT Our Active Afternoon sports programs are about to commence across the College for all students K-12. As previously advised, these afternoons for Junior, Middle and Senior School are designed around the directives approved by the National Cabinet for the rebooting of sport across the Country. In keeping with the current advice, our Active Afternoons begin at Level 1 for each activity as found in the AIS guidelines.

There is great excitement as we prepare for rebooting and I hope that students have completed the necessary paperwork distributed over the past week. If students are still unclear on their options, please contact Mrs Nelson in the Junior and Middle School or Mr Gardner in the Senior School.

Designing such an exciting program and structuring its implementation has been a group effort lead by Mr Justin Adams, Director of Co-curricular with the assistance of the Heads of Campus; Ms Leaf, Mr Jackman, the Sports Administrators; Mrs Nelson and Mr Gardner and the Head of Compliance and Excellence; Mr Jones.

The new spaces within our timetabled day have been achieved by combining time which is allocated each week to activities that are currently not permissible.

These weekly activities have involved the mass meetings of hundreds of students in weekly assembly, chapels and year meetings. Combine this with a shortening of lunch and the time for an Active Afternoon becomes mathematically possible.

The challenge was to bring this time together as a block by modifying the existing academic timetable. Our special thanks to Mr Jones who has achieved this so quickly. Students should receive a slightly modified timetable shortly.

A conversation with the Head of College

DAILY UPDATES SUSPENDED I think you have received over 30 daily updates throughout the Coronavirus emergency. The staff and I trust these have been helpful as we have navigated the many issues we have had to face during this time. We have decided to place that communication into 'hibernation' hopefully forever! Regular updates will be provided in The Roar.

STAY DISCIPLINED While some restrictions are being lifted, we must stay disciplined to avoid a resurgence of the Coronavirus in our region. It is essential that we maintain a high level of personal hygiene.

IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY Should there be an emergency, in relation to the Coronavirus pandemic or any other emergency requiring the attention of the whole College community, you will be contacted as quickly as possible using multiple communication channels including email, SMS and mobile phone, detailing the issue and providing instructions.

The College continues to provide handwashing/ sanitising products throughout the campuses and to remind all students to practice handwashing regularly. This will be reinforced as part of the Active Afternoon program where extra precautions are in place.

We continue to clean furniture and surfaces twice daily and buses after every use. Students may wear College approved sports uniforms on the day they have their Active Afternoon to avoid the need to use changerooms.

How to stAYing heALthY | 5th eDition | 2013

Parents dropping or collecting children from school should only leave their cars if for safety reasons or if their son/daughter requires escorting to class. Social distancing guidelines should be followed and there should not be group discussions or meetings with teachers or with anyone in the College grounds. If you need to walk your son/daughter to the classroom take the direct route there and back. 'Kiss and drop' or 'stop and collect' is the best at this time.

A hand wash should take around 30 seconds.

INNOVATION CENTRE

Work on the Innovation Centre planned for the All Saints Campus was temporarily suspended due to the Coronavirus. It was considered too risky to have many people from outside the immediate College community visiting and working on site with our students and staff in attendance. Visitors to our campuses have been tightly managed to adhere to the health and safety regulations we have put in place. The last thing we wanted to do was to undo all the good work we have all done.

However, off site work has recommenced on the project and as matters improve it is our plan to begin the physical work in the second half of the year.

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Rebooting Wellbeing in the Senior School Due to COVID-19 measures put into place last term, we have been unable to conduct Chapel services, assemblies and Tutor Group programs.

The most recent announcements from the State Government suggest further easing of restrictions; however, permission for us to gather together as a 'school' still appears some way off.

The new timetable to commence next week with the Active Afternoon provisions gives us the opportunity to recommence the Tutor Group program in Years 9 -12. In Year 12, this will provide the opportunity for the different Student Leadership Program committees to meet and to plan activities and initiatives for Term 3. The Leadership Program has also been, to a certain degree, a victim of the current health situation. We hope that this time provides our student leaders with the opportunity to put a stamp on their tenures before they complete their formal classes at the end of Term 3.

In Years 9 -11, we are providing what we hope will be a fun opportunity for students and their tutors to reconnect before recommencing our more formal programs at the beginning of Term 3. Tutor groups will compete against each other in a series of activities and puzzles over the coming weeks. Results for each task will contribute to a cumulative tally, allowing us to crown the 'Top Tutor Group' at the end of the term.

The competition will also be conducted between the core classes in Years 7 and 8, with weekly tasks being completed as part of the Wednesday pastoral periods. Mrs Nicholls and I

are exploring the feasibility for Years 5 and 6 to be involved as well.

I would also like to announce the imminent commencement of the application and appointment process for current Year 11 students to be involved in the 2021 Senior School Student Leadership Development Program. Mr Weeks and I will soon meet with Year 11 students to introduce the program and to outline the application and appointment process. We are intentionally starting earlier in the year than was previously the case. This will provide the opportunity for appointed leaders to work with the 2020 leaders in each program area to ensure that projects already established or currently under development are carried forward into the next academic year.

Active Afternoons The Active Afternoons ‘reboot of sport’ was launched last Thursday in The Roar. This is an exciting time for our students as many of them are ‘busting’ to get back into physical activity and sport.

Commencement Dates The Active Afternoons program will be: Junior School commencing on Friday 22 May, Middle School commencing on Thursday 28 May and Senior School starting with the Cross Country on Tuesday 26 May and the first Active Afternoon session on Tuesday 2 June.

Our ‘Aims’ for the Active Afternoons program are: • To get our students active again following the COVID-19 enforced restrictions.

• To improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our students and College community.

• To establish a new normal for the immediate future for sport and physical activity in our College.

• To take advantage of our College’s space in line with the Government's health compliance restrictions.

We thank our Heads of Sport, Mrs Nelson and Mr Gardner for their work so far with planning the Active Afternoon program and look forward to it commencing in the coming weeks. There have been and still are a lot of organisation and procedure changes that need to occur. We therefore ask the students and parents to please look out for specific information regarding activities in this program as they come to light.

All students will be given the opportunity to attend school in their winter sports uniform on their Active Afternoon day. This is nothing new for the Junior School but it is for the Senior School with this significant change comes new expectations and procedures.

Sport Uniform Requirements - Senior School on Tuesdays There are to be no exceptions to these uniform restrictions.

Option 1 (As pictured) Students can wear 100% of the Scots All Saints College winter sports uniform to and from school. This includes SASC logo track pants, SASC softshell jacket, SASC sports or house shirt. The SASC long sleeve sports t-shirt can be worn and if a jacket is required it MUST be the SASC winter coat. If students cannot meet these uniform requirements, then they are to go with Option 2.

Option 2 Students are to wear their regular school winter uniform (trousers or kilt, white shirts, tie, jumper, black shoes, etc.) and then get changed at lunch time into the sports clothing they have for the Active Afternoons session. They will then get changed back into their school uniform to go home. Change facilities will be allocated to Year groups.

Failure to comply with either of these options will result in disciplinary action such as lunch time detentions and exclusion from the Active Afternoon activities.

Strength and Conditioning We are excited to announce that we are able to resume the Strength and Conditioning program in the Senior School. We do however have some restrictions including the size of the groups, the types of exercises and new hygiene practices. Initially the students who were involved with the program in Term 1 will be emailed and offered their place back in the program and a schedule will be prepared for them. The sessions will be after the school day and divided into 45 minute to 1 hour timeslots. New students to the program are asked to see Mr Adams or Mr Gardner for details about joining.

Year 9 and 10 Camps At this stage, the Year 9 and 10 camps will go ahead as planned for Term 4 as printed on the College calendar.

The second instalment will be charged on your accounts from next Monday. There are four instalments to spread the cost of this outdoor educational program.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

National Careers Week aims to celebrate all things Careers; careers development, careers services and career practitioners. It is to promote the economic, social and personal benefits of positive career development. Career Development is a process of managing learning, work and leisure to progress through life. It includes gaining and using the skills and knowledge needed to plan and make informed decisions about education, training and work.

Ultimately, career development is about much more than jobs – it is about how to live your life.

Some of this year’s Careers Week objectives are: • Raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and broaden horizons about careers • Highlight the need for ongoing reskilling and upskilling to support careers throughout life • Showcase industries and career opportunities available in them Bringing this back to our community and our students, how can we best support them and help them navigate through the ever changing world of work? Parents will have the greatest influence on a young person’s career pathway. So what can you do to support them keeping in mind that the workplace may be very different from when you entered it.

Some strategies to help you with your teenagers include: • Stay positive • Share your experience – have conversations.

• Allow for a change in direction • Encourage them to learn from their mistakes • Help them to network with contacts you may have • Encourage them to find an industry contact • Respect their feelings and their privacy.

Parents and Friends Meetings This week we held what should have been our Term 2 Week 2 meeting via Zoom conferencing platform. This was changed to enable us to continue meeting during the COVID-19 restrictions.

The meeting provided a great opportunity to catch up, discuss what has gone on over recent months and to progress the business of the Association.

Ms Leaf and Mr Jackman provided updates on matters associated with the return to school amid the 'new normal', the enthusiasm displayed by students and positive efforts from the staff to ensure that the return was not confronting for parents and students.

The Association wishes to express its gratitude to the College for its efforts in ensuring parents remained informed and to staff for their fantastic efforts in supporting students and parents during the pandemic. The provision of sound, consistent and reliable information has helped us all get through.

We will now progress the sale of the Scots Golden Jubilee Cookbook that can be purchased for $10. This will need to be paid directly to the Association via online payment, with the family surname included as the reference. Banking and collection details will be provided in next week's edition of The Roar.

Did you know that the Association owns its very own coffee machine? Over the last couple of years, students have provided fresh espresso coffee to students and staff via 'The Coffee Club'.

This has provided students with an opportunity to learn new skills, with some obtaining employment in the hospitality sector from the experience gained. The Association is going to

work with the College to investigate opportunities where this might be able to be enhanced or where we might be able to provide greater support in this area.

The meeting also agreed to continue discussion with the College on a future event toward the end of year.

NATIONAL BOARDING WEEK

Boarding life in the ‘new normal’ It has been wonderful to have all of our boarders back this week. Their obvious excitement to see one another is infectious. I am immensely proud of the way in which the boarding community is coping with these challenging times.

The boarders have been dropped off by parents who cannot come into the boarding houses. Our boarders can only come into the boarding houses after being checked by the nurse. Some boarders have spent time in different boarding houses in order to reduce numbers and comply with protocols. Year 7 and 8 are living on the All Saints Campus in Marsden and Lyon House where they have their own space and can walk to classes in the Middle School. Routines and structures have been modified to follow Government community. These are amazing personal qualities that guidelines and the opportunity for boarders to go on are helping our young people get on with their learning leave has been restricted. and building strong connections along the way.

The resilience shown by our boarders has been I am in no doubt that they get this from their parents tremendous. Being a boarder means developing who are met with challenges beyond their control every confidence and supporting your friends and day. I am always inspired by the grit and determination shown by our parents in their farming, professional and business endeavours and the immense emotional sacrifice made by them in sending their children to boarding school for a great education and great adventure.

It is for this reason that the boarders are such a vital part of our College and why I feel so privileged to be part of this wonderful community.

Boarders share their stories This week is National Boarding Week (17 -23 May) and in celebration of our boarding students and the caring and supportive staff who look after them we asked some of our boarders what they enjoy about boarding with us and how they are coping at their ‘home’ away from home.

Alexandra Lindsay, Year 12 and Charlotte Lindsay, Year 10, Tottenham “Being a boarder at Scots All Saints College is like the big sleepover with your friends that I imagined it would be.”

“I am currently in Year 12 completing my HSC and have been boarding for four years. My sister and I started boarding at the same time, Charlotte being in Year 7 and myself in Year 9. Starting at the same time made boarding much easier because we had each other. We came from a small school at Tottenham and coming to Scots All Saints has given us a much wider range of opportunities.”

“Going to school away from home has been challenging because it’s a different lifestyle routine to being at home with your family. These routines take some getting used to but now it’s the new norm. Boarding is a great way to learn to become independent and live for yourself. When these times get challenging, it’s always easy to chat to your friends about it because they know what it’s like as they are living the same way.

“My parents have taught me a lot about resilience through the drought. Whenever times get tough

they bounce back and keep pushing on through it.

This is a great life skill to have especially when you finish school and you're out on your own in the big wide world.

“Being a boarder gives you so many more opportunities such as making larger and stronger friendships that will last a lifetime, becoming independent and standing on your own two feet and becoming resilient. Being a part of a boarding community is one of the best things you can do and the bond of the boarding friendships will last a lifetime.”

“Sometimes I get homesick but in my favour, Scots All Saints lets me agist my horse at school so I can gain a sense of connection to home when I’m with her.

I have had my horses with me at school since I started and find it so reassuring to have something as close to my heart as them to experience the journey with me. If I am having a tough day or just need a sense of relief, I can go down and ride or even just sit and watch the horses and I automatically feel reassured.

Having the opportunity to ride around with friends who share the same passion with you is a true privilege and the relationships you make are such a treasure.

“The relationships that you create here are amazing and the girls you get to live with end up being a true part of your family. You can tell them absolutely everything and they always have your back.

Amy Horne – Year 11, Queensland “When reflecting upon the past three years of boarding, the biggest thing I am able to appreciate is the relationships I have created.

From boarding residents, heads of houses, cleaners, kitchen staff and most importantly friends I can confidently say that together we have created a family.

“The connection from one boarder to another is a unique bond that I cherish very closely.

“I think that the biggest thing I will be able to take with me when I leave school is my ability to be resilient. Although boarding gets tough sometimes, at the end of the day every girl I live with has the ability to bounce back and make the most of the facilities and opportunities we are presented with.”

Harriett Mitchell – Year 10, Bourke Harriet’s two older brothers boarded at the College and now her younger sister, Charlotte, Year 7 does too “Coming to a regional city puts you out of your comfort zone but allows you to grow and develop as a person with support around you and provides so many more opportunities to learn and be involved.”

Angus Argent-Smith – Year 7, Rankins “One of the biggest challenges as a Year 7 boarder is missing home and my parents and also having to look after myself. The boarding staff are all very caring and the teachers mostly understand boarders and know what we are going through.

“Boarding school provides so many opportunities, activities and different people you will meet. It is the best way to grow personally and build lots of skills like confidence, taking care of yourself and learning to be planned and organised.”

"My time at SASC has been extremely positive and helped me grow as a student and as an individual.

From the get go the merge has raised the bar for the standard, granting more opportunities and creating a new community.

"Personally, the quality of the performing arts has greatly increased my engagement and willingness to participate in school life. With two large scale productions in two years, it is evident that the arts is flourishing, despite the unfortunate cancellation of Annie due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"The handling of the COVID situation was rocky at the start, with government and school policies changing on a daily basis to stay safe. With the introduction of online schooling and non-compulsory attendance to day school, the situation was able to be managed to the best of the schools ability. I am glad to be back, and more appreciative of my friends and boarding than ever before, with the community flourishing, despite the quarantine blues.

Progressing with coding classes Year 5 and 6 Technology students are working on two projects in Term 2. The first project is the online coding platform called 'GROK' where students are learning how to write both block code and line code. The second project allows the students to both code and build in ‘Minecraft’. In both cases the students are given a design brief which they follow as they find creative ways of using technology to find a solution. To start things off this term, the students are designing and building a rocket ship.

Youth group is now online!! Due to COVID-19, sadly we are unable to meet in person but instead we are getting together each Friday night on Zoom.
