Term 2 is always a busy time of year in a school. However, with COVID-19 restrictions eased, we can now do many of the things we have had to cancel or postpone over the last few years. It’s lovely to start getting back to normal!
Fourth Preparatory Class for 2023 Due to increased interest and demand, we will be opening up a fourth Preparatory class in the Junior School for 4-year-olds from next year. Feel free to let friends and family know if they have a young person who may be interested in our excellent school readiness program. Winter School Uniform
The weather is starting to cool down, and winter sport has kicked off. The leaves have changed colour, and our campuses are looking stunning.
All students should now be wearing full winter school uniform in Terms 2 and 3. This includes long sleeved shirts and blouses, Scots All Saints blazers, long trousers for boys and navy tights and kilt for girls.

Be the blessing you want to see. Hebrews 13:16: "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." Last week I attended a meeting with local emergency service providers. Each person represented a church charity provider working in the Central Tablelands region. The organisations represented were Vinnies, Anglicare, Uniting Care, Hope Care, Salvation Army, amongst others. They meet once a month to share what they are doing so that they can compliment each other’s work. It was such a privilege to hear about the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes. The reason I was privileged enough to attend the meeting was first to share a little of Scots All Saints College's work in this area. Many of you will be aware that since the start of the year we have organised small groups of students to volunteer to cook and serve lunch to the poor, lonely and isolated at Hope Care Café in Kelso. You are probably also aware that we raised $5,000 from the Rowing Fundraiser to pay for these meals so that we wouldn’t be a burden to Hope Care. I also shared with the providers that Scots All Saints Junior School is about to start a new initiative with Hope Care. Our goal is for Years 5-6 students to spend some time packing emergency food hampers for individuals and families in need across the Central West. Many of the church providers were greatly encouraged by our students’ efforts. During the discussion, they shared a current need that all the providers were short of Dignity Bags or Dignity Packs. A Dignity Bag contains essential items for women or men. Items include deodorant, soap, shampoo, sanitary items, shaving gear, underwear, hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper and disposable nappies (for mums with babies). So, for the next two weeks in Senior School Chapels, I am asking students to get together with a couple of friends and put together a Dignity Bag or Pack. My hope is that we could put together 20 packs for women and ten packs for men, with a range of small items for babies – i.e. nappies, wet wipes, and the like. I’d be thrilled if your family wants to get involved. So next time you go shopping, please buy a few extra items. Students who would like to be involved just need to put together a bag (you can find out more details online such as https://www. sharethedignity.org.au/about/faqs and then drop it off to my office by Friday, 3 June. HICES Cross Country Carnival This year Scots All Saints College will be hosting the HICES Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday, 24 May. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to compete on their home track. Our P&F are running a canteen on the day. Camps can build confidence, stimulate a sense of adventure, encourage social interaction and team-building, and promote independence and risk taking in a controlled and safe way.
Kindergarten 2023 Parent Information Night We welcome all parents of potential 2023 Kindergarten students to an information night next week on Thursday, 26 May. This evening will provide an opportunity to meet the teachers, find out about the Kinder program, and have a tour of some of our fantastic facilities on campus. Please see website for more details: scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au. COVID and Influenza As the weather is changing, we are seeing an increase of students with coughs and colds. If your child has any COVID or Influenza symptoms such as a cough or runny nose, please keep them at home until they are symptom-free to help stop anything spreading.
For Year 6, this was the first chance to get away from the normal routines of school since Year 4, and it was also the first time many students had been away from home for two nights. The Year 6s eagerly anticipated the camp and it proved to be a wonderful experience for the students, more than meeting their expectations. Below are some reflections from camp by Year 6 and some photos of the fun they had. “This year’s camp is definitely one of my favourites! I loved all the activities, but the cave maze, abseiling and sailing were my absolute favourites. Firstly, the cave maze was our last activity, so I’m saying that I knew I needed a just-in-case torch. I was right! It was pitch black, and the torch made it better when we were lost. continued page 4

Abseiling is so scary at first when you have to lean back, but after that little fright, it was a lot of fun. And at last, sailing. I volunteered to sit at the front, which is a little bit like a trampoline, but with bigger holes. Every time I got splashed I screamed, but it was still so much fun. Bridget The advice I would give to next year’s Year 6 is to check the weather and if it’s raining, bring gumboots! Emily One thing I learned about myself was that listening and learning about God can really change how you think about religion. Jenson Something that surprised me was that I could canoe. I was scared of rocky boats before, but the sailboat was kind of rocky and I enjoyed going up and down because of the waves. It surprised me because I hate waves! Sofie My advice for future Year 6s is even if you think you can’t do something you should at least try. Peer Support Our Peer Support program started in Week 2, and the Year 6’s learnt a lot after their first session as ‘teachers’. We will continue this week with a session called Strong Me, where students will identify their strengths and consider how to promote their resilience. Look out for the Peer Support Awards to be presented by the Year 6 Leaders this week, for the students who participated well during the sessions!

Well, that is to say, anyone planning tertiary education (including TAFE and VET, of course). Perhaps you think that Year 12's are the only people who should go to Open Days. Well they are definitely a large part of the target audience, that’s for sure. But if you’re in Years 10 and 11 and thinking about university, you could definitely benefit from going to open days this year too. Open Days are also for parents who’d like to know more about university. If you’d like to support your children’s wishes to continue studying after high school, then go along and get amongst it all. It can actually be beneficial for potential uni students to have family and friends along, someone to mull things over with later, or ask questions they might otherwise forget. You never know, parents could be inspired to take up studying again and enrol to do a course. Mature students, friends and siblings, the doors are open for everyone. Unless you’re adamant that you’ll be starting an apprenticeship or heading straight into full time work as soon as you leave high school, spending some time at open days will be a great investment of your time.

Bathurst Highland Society Ball Third time lucky! After the COVID pandemic stopped two attempts, the Bathurst Highland Society was finally able to stage its annual ball last weekend. The ball is usually an annual event that has been running for 43 years. Members of Years 11 and 12 from SASC attended the ball last time it was held in 2019. Before that, the Caledonian heritage of The Scots School meant that many of our former students participated, with Scots girls making their debuts at the ball from when the school went co-eduational in 1997 and Scots boys partnering debutants having an
even longer history. Students of other Bathurst schools were also debs and partners. In 2022, the Debutants were presented to the Member for Bathurst, Deputy Premier, and Minister for Police and Regional New South Wales, the Honourable Paul Toole. Preparation for the ball began several weeks before the event. The debutants and their partners had been receiving ballroom dancing lessons. Then there were important decisions about what to wear. Australian Mooting Championships
This week Scots All Saints College competed against Aquinas College in the Australian Mooting Championships. The team of Luke Burgess, Mimi Hodges, Olivia Carmody and Francesca Burke prepared over several weeks to argue a hypothetical case about a girl injuring herself swinging off a rope into a river. Our team made a compelling argument that the injuries were caused as a result of a foreseeable risk and that the liability should not be with the landowners. We are currently awaiting the results from the competition. About the Competition Bond University’s Faculty of Law conducts an annual mooting competition involving student representatives from secondary schools around Australia. Competition is an event for Year 11 and 12 students to develop their advocacy skills in a competitive environment. Up to 100 of Australia’s most prominent schools have participated in this intense competition in the past. The competition is by invitation only. Students can be awarded scholarships and invitations to attend the university based on their performance in this competition. HICES Cross Country Next Tuesday we’ll be hosting the 2022 HICES Cross Country right here on our Junior Campus. Around 400 runners and their families will be making the trip to Bathurst from schools as far away as the Central Coast and Snowy Mountains. The eight-race program will kick off at 11:30 am with around 40 Scots All Saints students taking to the track over the course of the carnival. A special thank you to the SASC P&F who will be running a canteen during the carnival. Come along and cheer on the mighty red and blue!

Senior School Summer Sport Team Photos next Friday Summer Sport Team photos will be taken next Friday, 27 May at the Senior School when we take our Year Group photos. The appropriate summer (2021-22) playing uniforms and footwear will be required for the sports photos. Some of these photos were taken late last term but there were a lot of team members missing in these photos so we would like to redo these. KARRALEE II
Contrary to a legend that the Scots College Branch School was founded as a result of the midget submarine attack on 31 May-1 June 1942, the first 19 boys of the Branch School were already in Bathurst when the attack occurred. Events associated with the attack, however, may have promoted the confusion. After the first bombing of Darwin in February, the Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney was the next major assault on mainland Australia. It was a quiet Sunday night when the three submarines entered the harbour. A watchman on patrol in a rowboat made the first encounter with one of the submarines, reporting the find to the patrol boat HMAS Lauriana. The Arnott’s biscuits family, then owners of Karralee, again enter the story: Lauriana had been the family yacht. Initial responses to the reports were that the watchman should mix some water with his whiskey, but he was soon vindicated. John Musgrove, a Scots College 6th former recalled: I lived at Beresford Road, Rose Bay where I was on the night of 31st May 1942. Studying my final year at Scots College, I was awakened at midnight or thereabouts by shells whizzing through the air. One exploded with an almighty noise 200 yards away in Plumer Road between Balfour Road and Salisbury Road. The late George Rowlands, an original “Karralee Boy”, was told by another Scots boy who had been in Sydney on the night of the attack that the boys in the top floor dormitory at Scots College had a splendid view of the attack. They were supposed to have evacuated to an air raid shelter but had not done so. A teacher came up to move them to safety. One of the boys supposedly said, “Sir, come and have a look at this.” Sir came to look at it and spent the rest of the attack in the dormitory with the boys watching events unfold! Scots College Main Oval. A week later, on 8 June, the Japanese mother submarine I-42 fired 10 shells, three of which exploded, landing in Rose Bay and Bellevue Hill, some quite close to Scots. The second group of boys were moved to Bathurst not long after, bringing the total to 38. It is this second move that perhaps has resulted in the connection with the midget submarine attack. More changes soon occurred. The teacher in charge of the Branch School, Mr Hedley “Zac” Palmer, left during term II. His story is taken up by his World War II service record, that shows he joined the Royal Australian Air Force in July 1942, becoming a Flight Lieutenant, and receiving the Pacific Star. The service records state he had a wife and daughter, both named Dora, and the “Karralee Boys” mention a daughter named Elizabeth. The portion of Karralee backing on to White Rock Road was requisitioned by the Army as a storage depot. The “Karralee Boys” soon discovered that there were a number of Italians working there. Local historians in Bathurst report that labour at the depot was provided by a number of Italian Australians who had been interned as enemy aliens when the war broke out. The boys often chatted to the Italians over the back fence. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour. On 21st July, 1942, Japanese troops landed at Gona on the northern coast of New Guinea, and the war entered a new phase.

Tyler's Australian selection for Track World Championships Year 12 student Tyler Puzicha has been selected for Australia as part of the 12 member squad heading to the 2022 UCI Junior Track World Championships. Tyler Puzicha was selected after a successful track season which included gold in the Under-19 women’s time trial at the National Championships and Oceania Championships. This is the first National Junior Track team selected since 2019, with the riders to travel to Tel Aviv, Israel to compete in the last week of August. Best of luck Tyler.
