The College Cattle Team followed up their amazing success at Sydney Royal Easter Show with many fine achievements at the Royal Bathurst Show last weekend. Once again, I write to congratulate all the students, Mrs Libby Dawes and her many parent helpers for their outstanding success.

Dubbo Boarding Expo

There were many fine achievements and ribbons received; Mrs Dawes will provide a comprehensive account of the successes in her article in The Roar.

I particularly wish to congratulate all students who participated in the Young Rural Achievers competition; our depth was quite amazing. Special congratulations goes to Felicity Webb (Year 10) for winning the Intermediate Section and Victoria Webb (Year 8) for taking out the Junior Section of the Young Rural Achievers.

This Saturday night, 44 Year 11 students will experience the enjoyment of the Highland Society Debutante Ball at Bathurst Panthers. They have been learning a wide range of traditional Scottish Ballroom dances over the last two months and have had a great deal of fun doing so. I am really looking forward to the Ball and joining with family and friends of our Year 11 students. It is a real privilege for me to be invited to be the Guest of Honour for this year’s Ball, something I am looking forward to very much. All the couples will be presented to me and I will be formally open the Ball. Some of our Highland Dancers have also been invited to perform for the first time which is a real honour for the College.

The Highland Society has been operating in Bathurst for over 40 years as a means of maintaining Scottish heritage and raising much needed funds for a local charity through this major fundraising event. continued page 2

The Highland Society's chosen charity this year is Daffodil Cottage. Proceeds from the Ball will lead to the purchase of a number of Syringe Driver Units which are used to control pain for palliative care patients over a 24-hour period. The unit comprises of a syringe, pushed by a driver, so that over a 24 hour period it will administer medication to keep pain under control for the patient. This allows patients to be looked after at home by family and carers. Each Syringe Driver Unit costs about $1500 and Scots All Saints College is privileged to be able to support this very important charity with the Highland Society through the involvement of our students in the Ball.

The Winter Sports Season began in earnest last weekend and I was delighted to see so much enthusiastic support by students and parents on the sidelines. The new sporting uniform looks fantastic and it was easily recognisable and distinctively different from other teams.

I have spoken to the students about this on Senior Assembly this week and will do so on Friday at the Middle School Assembly as well.

It was resolved at the last College Council Meeting on 29 March that all our sporting teams at SASC be referred to as ‘Scots All Saints Lions’. This can then be shortened to: “Go Scots All Saints” or “Go Lions”.

I understand that it will take time but all parents, students and staff must be leaders in getting this right. We certainly do not want parents and students referring individually to either of the previous schools and … SASC sounds very ordinary so should not be used either. We want our College community and the students especially to be proud of their new College. Accordingly, our branding needs to be consistent in the public domain so we can be proud and not cause confusion.

I have also been asked by parents why the Rugby and Netball Draws have us listed as SAS. I know in the case of the ISA Rugby Draw it is to avoid confusion with St Andrew’s Cathedral School which is abbreviated to SACS which is similar. For future seasons, I will request that we be listed in the draw and in all communication as Scots All Saints Lions.

Running Club

WHERE: Scots All Saints College, All Saints Campus, Watson Oval.

WHEN: Monday 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm, Terms 2 & 3. Running Club will begin on

Monday 20 May. WHO: Students Year 3 – Year 8 who are particularly interested in improving their

technique, speed and fitness. Students who have an interest in sprinting,

middle distance and long distance running.

Please note: It is preferred that students who join this group commit each week for Terms 2 and 3 and are motivated to improve their athleticism. They should be capable of running long distances or shorter distances with intensity for approximately 45 minutes. Numbers are limited and preference will go to students who can commit on a weekly basis.

Positive Psychology – Parent Forum with Dr Paula Robinson Dr Paula Robinson has worked with over 500 schools throughout Southeast Asia and Australia and now Scots All Saints College is delighted to be the first College within the Central West region to adopt this new ethos into its student wellbeing and pastoral care approach.

Positive Psychology has delivered outstanding results for many schools nationally and Scots All Saints College is excited to introduce this positive, new approach to learning and living. We believe it will be a game changer in education for our students and help them lead purposeful lives.

As the program encourages active collaboration with staff and parents, a special parent forum was held on Thursday 4 April where Dr Robinson outlined some of the fundamentals of Positive Psychology for our College environment. While there was a great turnout for the event, we understand many parents, including those out of town and our boarding parents were unable to attend in person this time so we recorded the full session so you can view it in your own time.

Literature Festival preparations underway Welcome back to Term 2 in the libraries.

wildly popular Ella and Olivia series, the Frankie Fox Girl Spy books and has written historical fiction including My Australian Story: Escape from Cockatoo Island.

Preparations are well underway for the inaugural Scots All Saints College Literature Festival to be held across both campuses on the 17, 18 and 19th of June. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Space to Read’.

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, we have booked an impressive list of authors and illustrators to work with our students from Pre-K to Year 11 in a mix of presentations and writing/illustration workshops.

Yvette has worked as a secondary English teacher and recently ran the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge. During our Festival, Yvette will be conducting writing workshops with Years 9-11 and presenting author talks to Years 2-4.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

University FACTS Day – Year 12 Year 12 attended the annual FACTS (Facts About Careers and Tertiary Studies) day at CSU last week.

With over 50 exhibitors, a broad range of post school pathways were covered. Our students made the most of their time networking, gathering information and considering the variety of options that are currently available to them.

step out of their comfort zone and try something that they maybe interested in. We have chosen the last week of this term 24 -28 June, to run the program. Boarders have the option to head home and work locally or find a position in Bathurst.

Further parent information will be emailed next week outlining the application process. This week can be an invaluable experience for students and potentially a ‘game changer’ towards identifying a goal and drawing relevance to what students are aiming to achieve at school.

White Card (NSW WH&S Induction Card) – Friday 31 May and Monday 3 June This nationally recognised qualification opens up great opportunities for casual labouring jobs over the summer. Any Year 10 student who is looking to do work experience within the Trade Sector (eg. plumbing, building, electrical) will need to have a White Card for their work experience placement. It is also needed in Year 11 and 12 if you choose VET subjects that require work placement.

If your son or daughter wishes to gain this qualification, please register your name with Ms Jones. The cost is $100 and will be billed to your account. It will be held at school in the Pavillion starting at 8:30 am sharp. Maximum 20 students per course and we will run this twice this term.

Demystifying the Uni Application Process!

Working through the multitude of pathways postschool can be daunting and confusing. They say ‘knowledge is power’ and in the case of applying for University this is very true. In NSW, Year 12 students apply to their Universities of choice via UAC (University Admission Centre), this process can seem quite complex with definite deadlines to adhere to.

Year 10 Work Experience Opportunity John Krumboltz is a Career theorist whose theory of “Happenstance” affirms that indecisiveness in career choice is not always a bad thing as this can allow people to maximise opportunities from unplanned events. In a school environment, we are all about creating opportunities for our students to shine and experience new things.

Year 10 now have the opportunity to participate in work experience. While not a compulsory activity, we are encouraging all students to take a week to

Royal Bathurst Show

The final show of the season for the Scots All Saints College Cattle Team was the Bathurst Royal Show. The team finished the season with a bang with some amazing results.

Our home bred Limousin heifer, TSS Pollie took out the Junior Champion Female award for Limousins with her sister, TSS Paula, taking out the Reserve Champion Award.

A steer bred by Mr Leigh Scott took out the Led Champion School Steer against some tough competition.

Many of our students won awards in the both the Junior Paraders and Junior Judging. It was exciting that Hugo Green, Harriett Mitchell and Victoria Webb all made it through to the finals in the judging competitions and had to do a public speech on their selections. All these students took away ribbons which is fabulous.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the amazing results in the Young Rural Achievers Awards. We would like to thank Ms Helen Jones for her help in preparation for this competition.

Royal Bathurst Show

Lithgow Open Day A Lithgow Open Day was held earlier this week inviting parents and the community to visit the Lithgow campus and meet our teachers.

There was positive interest from those who attended and picked up an enrolment information packs.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our Director of Junior School, Mr Anthony Roohan, Director of Community Engagement and Marketing, Mel Monico and newly appointed Marketing Coordinator, Yolanda Lefevre, to meet with current Lithgow parents, students and teachers, Mrs Erika Pringle (K-6) and Mrs Tennille Jenkins (Pre-K) in their classrooms.

Student writing We all love 'ME!' genre and possibly personal life.

The opening is followed by a short section of French dialogue where Taylor and Brendon are fighting. Taylor then walks off angrily, but as soon as she turns around the joy on her face is immediately evident and starts singing the bubbly song 'ME!'.

Taylor Swift, American singer and songwriter and Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco released a new song 'ME!' on 26 April, bringing a close to the dark reputation era.

'ME!' is a bubblegum pop song and a total contrast to her last album “Reputation” released in late 2017. This song is a happy and cheerful song, that highlights being unique and yourself.

“You can’t spell awesome without me” Along with the new songs she released a music video and within a week it now has over 138 million views. The music video starts off with a snake hissing and then breaking up into numerous rainbow butterflies.

This is quite significant as Taylor

adopted the snake persona even wearing a snake ring as she adopted the methodical meaning of the snake rather than the betrayer a snake is often referred too, after a number of snake emojis directed at her were posted by her adversaries.

The End of Us Climate Change is a term that is prevalent in mainstream media. In the past 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat. The last Ice Age marked the beginning of the modern civilization. It also marked the end of the Pleistocene epoch and the start of the Holocene epoch. Climate Change has been around for thousands of years, so why am I writing about it now?

The answer is simple: the tiny little humans that live on this Earth have a superpower. That super power can literally alter the climate for the worse.

However those tiny humans are incredibly smart.

They started the Industrial Revolution and flew to the moon. They also caused the mass extinction of species, polluted the oceans and altered the atmosphere. In 3 years the damage we have done will be irreversible.

Many people say that mankind is doomed, we have ruined our planet and there is no way we can fix it.

I however, disagree. Homosapiens have existed on this Earth for 200,000 years. In this period of time we have accomplished fantastical things. When Mr Hawking predicted that Earth will last for another 1000 years, he took Climate Change into account.

Without Climate Change in the equation, Earth will last for another 1.75 billion years and be vaporized when the Sun turns into a red giant. Imagine what we can accomplish in 1000 years or even 1.75 billion.

At the end of the Dark Era which is 10 duotrigintillion (10 followed by 100 zeroes) the universe will come to bleak death. In the end everything we know and see will be no more. The Universe will be a wasteland of darkness. If humans can come together and find a way to exist outside of the realm of space and time or even find a way to preserve life for the next billion years, humanity will survive.

Student writing ‘Whatever It Takes’ In just two weeks, Avengers: Endgame is swiftly on its way to becoming the highest grossing film of all time, but what is it about crime-fighters in spandex suits with unworldly abilities that seems to entice audiences, old and young alike?

Firstly, it is important to talk about what has led up to Endgame, and its beginning of the end of some of its most iconic characters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe started 21 movies ago in 2008, with Iron Man, and this instantly brought in fans. As its universe expanded, more characters were introduced and it seemed everyone and their mother knew about The Avengers and had a definitive answer on who their favourite character was.

Everyone has a superhero to relate to. For some this was the Asgardian God of thunder Thor Odinson or Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and many people argue the relatableness of these heroes, as nothing seems more foreign or alien than blue extraterrestrials from a planet called Kree.

Though it isn’t the appearance of the characters that make them human, it’s the struggles they go through on a day-to-day basis.

We watch as they struggle on the big screen and sympathise and as we become more invested in their lives, we start to believe that they could be people we know in real life, or we project our own experiences onto them and attach an unshakeable bond to them.

Endgame was the be all end all, and even casual Marvel fans needed to know what happened to

their favourite character and the people who surrounded them.

There’s nothing more human than emotion, and it was evidently clear that the creators of Endgame (whether it be directors or actors) wanted their characters to feel and react to the situations around them. As we watched this unfold on the big screen, we became more attached, and we recommended these movies to others, as we believed this franchise had the ability to have a positive impact on others, just like it did us.

While some may argue that they are just “superhero movies”, it is clear that they are so much more to many people around the world.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL INDEPENDENT LEARNING CENTRE What?

The ILC aims to help all students in the senior school with individual work and provide assistance in any area of school and creative interest. Specialised external competitions and enrichment opportunities are promoted through the ILC and made available for all interested students.

When?

The ILC is open Monday to Wednesday. Lunchtime appointments are available if needed.

Monday After School Homework Centre The Monday Homework Centre is open from 3.20pm on Mondays in Room 6 (next to library)

 Humanities, English, Maths and Science specialist assistance available  Help with homework, assessment tasks  Essay scaffolds  Proof-reading and editing  Study and time management advice  Study timetables Students are provided with biscuits for afternoon tea; please bring a water bottle.

No booking is necessary and students sign in upon arrival and departure.

Students MUST come prepared to work.
