A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
Rebooting Sports at Scots All Saints College Considerable work has been undertaken by our Senior Staff to reboot the sports program for all students from K-12. The program – to be called ‘Active Afternoons’, will offer students a range of sport choices to be conducted in line with the Australian Institute of Sports’ directives as approved by the National Cabinet. Sports options will be wide-ranging and conducted at Level A of the AIS directives. A separate Active Afternoon is planned for Junior School – K-4, Middle School – 5-8 and Senior School 9-12. The program will run from approximately 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm so that all students finish school at the usual time to travel home in their regular way. Over the next week or so, we will survey students and parents about the options available and provide more details about the program which will operate for Terms 2 and 3. Commencing at Level A, the program will be developed to Level B as the government advice changes. It’s an exciting start to rebooting sport and getting active again. Transition back to normal teaching
Year 2 French Readers
Our Junior School students are enjoying being back with their peers and face to face with their teachers.
Having studied French for some years, Year 2 children now have the linguistic skills to truly benefit from the innovative home reading program, that we embrace at Scots All Saints College. Year 2 students will bring home a ‘Bidule’ and ‘Escalire’ book once a week, which forms part of a specialised literacy program for emergent French learners. The books progressively introduce more complex language and addresses specific grammar challenges for emergent readers. The program engages parents/carers to actively contribute to the learning process with their child; possibly igniting a lifelong interest in the study of French!
We are still being very diligent at school adhering to social distancing measures and safe hygiene practices. Students are now familiar with the daily temperature check. Any child found to have respiratory symptoms or a temperature over 37.2C will be referred to the health centre for a second review and in most instances parents will be contacted to collect them. I would like to thank the teachers for their work in providing both remote online learning as well as classroom teaching. They have done a magnificent job to ensure continuity of learning for all of our students. If your child needs to stay home because they are ill or have medical conditions which require them to be isolated, could you please email connect@ scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au or contact your child’s core teacher to arrange work for them to do at home. Kiss, Drop and Collect Procedures for Pre K - Year 4 Thank you to all the parents for supporting our ‘Kiss, Drop and Collect’ procedures. Please drop off and pick up as normal at your preferred location and encourage your child to say goodbye at the gate and to meet you back at the gate in the afternoon. Parents of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students can take their child to their classroom but we ask that you drop off or collect from outside the room and adhere to social distancing requirements in these spaces. Notification of Student Absences Parents are required to use the ‘absence form’ in Care Monkey to notify the College if your child is sick or absent from school.

Mufti Day Fundraiser Last Friday, the students participated in a mufti day in order to raise money for the Australian Childhood Foundation. This organisation provides specialist support to children who have suffered from neglect, abuse and family violence. They also provide parents with education and support to help them raise happy, safe and loved children. The Year 8 School Captains believed that this was a worthwhile Foundation to support. Congratulations to the students for raising $622. Personal Research Project This week we launched our Personal Research Project with students. There was great excitement across the classes as students began to think about some of the topics or special interests they could pursue. The Personal Research Project is something that students can work on throughout Term 2. Once a week, teachers will provide instructions in the homework sheet as to what students need to do. Students will be asked to submit a piece of work relating to the project each week. Part of this process involves teaching students the importance of planning their work over a period of time so we encourage everyone to ‘stick’ to the timeframe as closely as possible. The aim of the Personal Research Project is to give Junior School students the opportunity to investigate an area of interest and present the findings to their peers. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Pre-K News Pre-Kindergarten have been exploring all things Dinosaur related as a part of our STEM unit this term. This week they completed ‘Shadow Drawings' of Dinosaurs outside on the concrete pathways. They were also excited to explore which countries and continents dinosaurs inhabited many years ago, using Indiana Gilmore’s Smart Globe and the class iPad app.

We are still being very diligent at school adhering to all the precautionary measures we have in place as part of our ‘new normal’ routine including, social distancing measures and safe hygiene practices. It is great to see the children back and it is evident that they enjoy the face-to-face interaction with each other and their teachers. Year 7 and 8 Boarders have settled into their new house Our Year 7 and 8 boarders are enjoying living on the All Saints Campus and tell me that they can sleep in and extra half an hour. They are a wonderful group of children who contribute a great deal to the life of the College. Drop off and Pick Up Procedures for Years 5-8 Please drop off and pick up as normal at your preferred location but do not leave the vehicle yourself. Physical Education Uniform Students are able to wear their PE uniform on the day that they have their PE lesson to limit the need for students to enter the change rooms. This has been working well with an additional benefit of enabling more lesson time and reducing time wasted in changing clothes.

AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK CENTRE The Monday afternoon Senior School After School Homework Centre will not be operating at the moment as there are no late buses to transport students home afterwards. The Year 7/8 Homework Centre will still be operating on the All Saints Campus.

Welcome Back Students The majority of our students are back at school and classes are predominantly running as ‘normal’. My thanks for the large number of emails and messages from parents expressing their gratitude for the work our staff are doing during this time. There is a great deal of research and data that highlights the benefits that occur around the expression of gratitude. Formal Winter Uniform The Year 9-12 Boys’ Winter uniform includes grey socks. Increasingly we are seeing a trend of other coloured socks, including the popular ‘Happy Socks’ being worn in place of the standard grey socks. Again, I would ask that parents please assist us to maintain the standard and consistency of our uniform by ensuring your child is wearing the correct socks to school. Assessment Tasks Term 2 is well underway, including the issuing of Assessment Notifications. Please check with your student about which subjects have assessment tasks due this term.
Temperature checks These are continuing on the campus in the morning before classes commence. The system is proving to be an efficient and worthwhile component of the strategies employed to keep students and staff safe during this pandemic. Reminders to practise Social Distancing and regularly handwashing and use of sanitiser are repeated throughout the day.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE NEWS As we enter into Week 3 of the term the Performing Arts Academy is back in full swing (please excuse the pun)! This week the Suzuki Strings Program recommences for 38 students in our Junior School. We are very much looking forward to the sound of violins and enthusiastic students undertaking their one-on-one lessons. We will share their wonderful playing by the end of term online or if possible at a small recital. It is lovely to have our vibrant and passionate students back making music in small groups. Students bring energy to the Performing Arts Academy and the buzz of tutors, students, staff and instruments across the campuses are inspiring. Music is an essential part of life and the way we are able to adapt to the current situation shows great qualities in children we are

educating. Symphonic Winds, our largest ensemble, has separated into small tutorial groups to focus on the finer elements of their music and revise technique with their tutors. We are really proud of the students working with us to ensure they are still able to practice and be involved in the magic of music during these times. A report from the talented Mr Ball who directs the new Pep Band can be read on page 7! As we carefully adapt to a new way of life we have been encouraging our students to “Dance like nobody’s watching … and sing like nobody is listening” – Mark Twain. IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Pep Band – The Spotted Cats! The Pep Band was formed in Term 4, 2019. The idea was inspired from two sources; my experiences in playing in the Australian Army Pep Band and teaching students who were keen to learn the music from a Rehab style brass band that often play in the subways of New York. A famous band in this style is 'Lucky Chops' and they inspired some of the students to create our own ensemble. The name of the Scots All Saints Pep Band is The Spotted Cats which is derived from the world-famous jazz club in New Orleans. The Spotted Cats are a roaming jazz and funk style ensemble with groovy beats, rhythms and melodies.

The Spotted Cats are considered a premium ensemble within the Performing Arts Academy with an invitation the only way into the marching band! The music, though incredibly complex and challenging, is designed to be fun and engaging. We are currently building our repertoire and in the next month will have a 30-40 minute set of music to entertain the masses. We were invited to lead the Grand March at the 2020 Royal Bathurst Show belting out covers of some classic tunes including Stand by Me, Funky Town and I Feel Good but this has been postponed. SPEECH & DRAMA UPDATE
Students Shine in Virtual Competitions! Scots All Saints College Speech & Drama students have adapted beautifully in recent performances online. As many Eisteddfods were cancelled recently, the students showed great eagerness and enthusiasm in taking up some online opportunities in the school holidays. These online events allowed them to experience performing on the stage 'virtually' and showcase their skills. Two events were held in the school holidays: Sydney Theatre Arts Titles: Children submitted a video of their performance, and they received detailed written feedback. This was a very strong event and it was wonderful to see our SASC students awarded with the following prizes: 4/U 1st Place Poem: Ashwin Buttsworth (Pre-K) 4/U 2nd Place Poem: Willow Casey (Pre-K) 10/U 1st Place Poem: Estẻe Benita (Year 3)
A special mention to Ruby Thorne and Estẻe Benita who were awarded top overall SASC marks for the competition with 95/100 for their performance. Encore In-House Virtual Live Eisteddfod: To give students a platform to perform the work they had practiced and performed over the past months, we trialled and ran our very first In-House Speech & Drama Live Virtual Eisteddfod. This was the first of its’ kind held in NSW. A special mention to Ashwin Buttsworth and Estẻe Benita who were winners of their age categories. Many Scots All Saints College students participated enthusiastically and enjoyed watching their friends perform. Congratulations to all students on a wonderful start to the 2020 Eisteddfod season.
