Matilda – what a show!

Matilda – the Musical finished up performances last Saturday and what a show it was. The cast and crew should be extremely proud of themselves. It was a completely engaging performance and showcased how very talented our students are. I had many people tell me how wonderful they found it and some people came back and saw it more than once. After a few years missing the chance to perform, it was wonderful that it all went so well.

Year 6 Camp After two years of no school camps, Year 6 have ventured off to the Lake Macquarie Crusader Camp from Wednesday to Friday this week. They will be enjoying the ocean views and a range of exciting activities. We look forward to hearing how it went when they all return on Friday.

Year 10 Camp Year 10 will head down to the Scout Cataract Activity Centre in Appin next week for their camp. We expect they will have a fantastic time, with a vast range of outdoor activities on offer. Much planning has gone into these camps and will directly feed back into the peer support programs for each year group.

Illness reminder We have had a number of students come to school this week with cold and flu symptoms. The seasonal flu has begun with the cooler weather and although it doesn’t appear that COVID-19 cases have increased, students still need to stay home if they are sick – even if they test negative. Thank you for your support.

Coffee & Prayer Meetings

NAPLAN NAPLAN commenced this week for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 with students doing tests in the areas of Reading, Numeracy, Language and Writing.

“And it came to pass!”

With all that is going on in our world – COVID, conflict in the Ukraine, clean up after the floods, interest rates and inflation rising, I thought I would listen to one of my favourite Christian comedians, Mark Lowry. Mark is an American singer, songwriter and comedian. Within Christian circles, he is probably best known for writing the song, “Mary, Did you know?”

The other night I was listening to one of his performances, and he was sharing with the audience his favourite Bible verse. The audience was expecting something profound sharing one of the great theological truths of scripture, like John 3:16, Philippians 4:6-7, or Isaiah 40:30-31. But alas, no. In true comic fashion, Lowry chose the start of Luke 5:1a – “And it came to pass”. The audience burst out laughing at what seemed to be a completely irrelevant verse. He started to talk about the negative things in life, such as the things I’ve listed above, and also personal difficulties within our own life. He reminded his audience – “And it came to pass” that these will pass from our lives. Then, he pointed to all the good things in life – wedding bliss, business success, holidays, good looks, shall one day also “pass”. The audience burst out laughing because they, like us, want the negative to pass away, but not the positive!

Lowry, now retired, was an outstanding comedian because he didn’t just make you laugh, there was always a greater spiritual point contained within his humour.

His point here is that this world, with all the positive and negative aspects, shall ‘pass away’ (Matt 24:35), but we, the believer, have the great Kingdom beyond the grave that shall never ‘pass away’ – it’s a place outside of time where there will be no more tears, pain, sin or evil.

So wherever you are in life, overwhelmed with the positive or negative, call upon God to join you in the experience. The experience shall “pass”, but God will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5) as you journey through life’s ups and downs, and head towards the great Kingdom that is to come. Amen.

Innovation Centre Open Afternoon A big thank you to everyone who attended our Innovation Centre open afternoon last Tuesday. It was great to showcase some of the learning that has been taking place in this space and for parents and siblings to try some of the experiences on offer.

upcoming CWA Public Speaking Competition to be held in Orange from the 23- 26 May. We wish these four students well as they finalise planning and deliver their speeches.

Teachers keep on learning!

Our teachers are always looking at ways to update their professional knowledge. We have many of our teachers undertaking a range of professional learning opportunities in the coming weeks on a range of areas to ensure they are providing the best possible education experiences.

Opportunities include K-2 Reading essentials, Cognitive Load Theory, K-2 English Curriculum, STEAM Education Conference and Seven Steps Writing.

Junior School Art Exhibition and IPSHA Travelling Art Show- Week 6 (Monday, 30 May - Friday, 3 June) Commencing Monday 30 May, we’ll be hosting a range of quality artworks from IPSHA (Independent Primary School Heads of Australia) schools. Known as the Travelling Art Show, we’re looking forward to displaying this work for students and parents to view. The Art Show will be set up in the Kemmis and be available for viewing each afternoon that week. Student work from each of our classes will also be on display that week. Further details will be issued shortly.

Lego Spike Challenge Nearly 30 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended our Lego Spike Challenge on Monday. The challenge continues every Monday this term and sees students design and create a robot that aligns with the theme ‘Journey.’ As students design and build their robots they also keep a digital journey of their learning. It’s great to see so many students thriving and enjoying the challenge!

Musical Success What a joy it was to watch the musical last week.

Seeing the development of the students over the past months has been amazing and a real treat. We certainly do have some very talented students. The quality of the show was outstanding, and it was not by chance. We have an amazing team of dedicated, caring and creative staff behind the scenes. Thank you to Rachel Bate, Jon Clipsham, Liz Sargeant, Liz Casey, Patrick Sinclair and our other supporting staff for providing the opportunity for our students to shine. Congratulations to the students for getting through the performances and thank you for your dedication to the musical and entertaining us. Well done.

NAPLAN Testing This week our Year 7 and 9 students have been working through the NAPLAN tests online. We thank the students for their cooperation and diligence with the online tests. For students who missed tests due to illness or other misadventure, there will be an opportunity to do catch-up exams next week from Tuesday (17 May).

Awards and Discipline Tracking As communicated to the parents and students last week, we have commenced our revised system for tracking students' successes (awards) and behaviour (discipline). The response has been amazing so far.

The awards are far outnumbering the discipline!

Awesome work students, keep it up! We will be looking at some tangible prizes for students who achieve a substantial number of awards throughout the term. So keep working hard and stay tuned in for details as they emerge.

Athletics Postponed As communicated to our parents/carers and students, we have had to postpone the 7-12 InterHouse Athletics Carnival. We will communicate the new date once it is determined.

be running a Math Club/Homework support after school. Previously, Mrs McGuire was delivering support in the evening to boarding students, now it is more accessible to day and boarding students. We encourage students to take advantage of this. Please refer to the flyer in The Roar for details or contact Mrs McGuire or Mrs Rendall.

Summer Sports Awards Last week we were able to present sports awards for the previous summer season. We congratulate the students who received awards. For those who may have missed out; we encourage them to set goals from the current winter season and strive for recognition through commitment, sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership. We thank Mr Wilkinson for collating, preparing and presenting the awards.

Year 10 Camp Next week (18 May to 20 May) the Year 10 students will be heading off to camp. The students are eager to spend some time away from school to do some outdoor activities, group bonding and to apply many of the concepts that they have been working on and learning about during lessons in the Invictus Program. We thank Mr Van Gend for all his planning and preparatory work.

Fingers crossed they get some good weather and that they have a great time.

School Photos – Year Group and Summer Sports Team Photos Advance notice is being given for our second day of school photos. Earlier in the year we had our individual photos taken, but due to the COVID recommendations at the time we were unable to take group photos.

Therefore, on Friday 27 May we will be taking our Year Group and Summer Sports Team Photos. Full formal winter school uniform will be required for the Year group photos and the appropriate summer (2021-22) playing uniforms will be required for the sports photos.

Junior School Cross Country Mother Nature turned on an awesome day for our Junior School Cross Country carnival last Monday.

Students took to our 2km and 3km courses in the name of fun and fitness. Congratulations to everyone who gave it a red-hot go, especially our Age Champions, Runners-Up and the students who scored a place on the SASC Cross Country team that will go on to compete at the HICES Carnival on the 24 May, right here at our Junior Campus. Senior School Athletics Carnival We had to make the tricky decision to postpone today’s Senior School Athletics Carnival. Given the rain that’s currently falling it looks like the right call was made. We’re currently exploring a new date for our carnival to take place and we’ll let everyone know once that’s confirmed.

Jenson kicks a goal (and then four more) Our very own Jenson Hornery (Year 6) achieved the rare feat of a triple hat trick in last Saturday’s soccer clash again Bathurst 75. Jenson put five balls in the back of the net and helped his team secure an impress 8–1 victory. Great job Jenson!

AICES Hockey Congrats to Lily Kable, Emily Tallentire and Philippa Webb who represented AICES at the U16 CIS Championships at Pennant Hills on Tuesday. A special shout out to Lily Kable who was selected in the CIS team.

This is Fairley awesome Eloise Fairley has just been selected in the Cricket NSW Western U16s Academy. This brilliant achievement is the result of years of hard work and dedication.

Eloise has been a keen cricketer from a young age. She has played competitive cricket in the Orange District Association and has represented the Girls Western Zone Academy. Eloise had a successful 2021/2022 season, helping her team reach the Grand Final while claiming the award for leading female wicket taker and run scorer.

CIS Swimming Our top swimmers capped off a successful representative season at the recent CIS Swimming Championships.

HICES Debating Round Three Last week saw Scots All Saints College contest the third round of the HICES Debating competition.

Held over Zoom, the competition again allowed students to test their cognitive mettle against orators from schools around NSW. The Year 9/10 team of Jai Valabjee, Chido Mutyiri and Hannah Howes kicked off the round with a fiercely competitive tussle against Macquarie Anglican Grammar School as they considered the merits of mental health days for students. Both sides presented compelling cases, but MAGS were able to come away with the win.

Our second debate saw our Year 7/8 team of Stirling Miller, Margo Sawell, Eliza Rennie, and Suhaila Murshed tackle a formidable opponent in All Saints Belmore. The topic for this debate centred on issues around the rights of privacy and safety for children. Both teams grappled with the topic admirably, with All Saints Belmore narrowly claiming victory.

The final debate of the week was between our Year 11 team of Ella Kay, Olivia Carmody and Jessica Mills and a well-oiled Kinross Wolaroi squad as they considered the merits of denying smokers access to Medicare. The debate was of an exceptionally high standard, and the focus and precision of our team saw them clinch a well-deserved victory. We look forward now to the challenges awaiting us in Round 4 of the competition.

World War 1 Troubadour Theatre production On Friday, 6 May, Year 9 had an amazing experience. An actor from Troubadour Theatre visited the school to perform a skit about what soldiers experienced during World War 1.

was the power of mateship. In a terrifying time in history, comradery was a big part of the ANZAC spirit. Some students even had the opportunity to participate in the performance as well.

THE BEAN AWARD

In the last edition of the school’s weekly newsletter, The Roar, the Head of College Mr John Weeks, made reference to the Bean Prize, which will be reinstated in the Senior School at Presentation Day in December to be issued to a Year 12 student who most embodies the attributes described by the Second Headmaster of All Saints’ College, Rev. Edwin Bean (1877-1888) and father of Charles E. W Bean, renowned Rev. Edwin Bean war correspondent, historian and founder of the Australian War Memorial. Charles was also a student of the College and a stalwart member of the Old Boy’s Union. The second son of Edwin Bean, John Willoughby Butler Bean, was also a notable Old Boy. He specialised in anaesthetics, and when the war broke out, he joined on the first day of enlistment and became the original medical officer of the 3rd Battalion, A.I.F. Although not so well known as his brother C.E.W. Bean he earned the gratitude and regard of thousands of soldiers and ex-soldiers of the rank and file of the Australian forces.

The Bean Prize, a historic and prestigious award, was first implemented at All Saints’ College by Edwin Bean. After an absence of twenty-six years, he returned to Australia to retire and immediately revisited All Saints’, where he endowed the Bean prize. This award is ’to be presented to the boy who, by his efficiency at work, games, and his influence on the life of the School, is

deemed by the headmaster, most worthy to receive it’.

This award was first issued in 1924 to J. Penberthy and since then has been awarded annually for over 90 years. The last recipient was Charles O’Neill in 2018. Since the College became co-ed many of the past recipients of the Bean Prize have been girls, and the criteria have been reworded “to be awarded annually to the Year 12 student who shows excellence in the areas of ‘Leadership, Academics and Sport’”. The Prize will be funded by money from the Bean Family Trust Fund, which the College will administer. The award will be in the form of a medallion or suitable purchase (yet to be decided), reflecting the Bean family's importance in the College‘s history.
