A conversation with the Head of College
However, with reference to the advice prepared by the AIS and accepted by the National Cabinet, sports can occur under specified levels of engagement as detailed.
We thank our mums for lots of things but especially the life lessons, the wonderful memories, the healing hugs, the delicious Sunday roasts and their unconditional love and care.
In brief, there are three levels A, B and C. Level A is the most restrictive and this is the current level. This level enables fitness and skill development for all sports which enables the College to design programs for our students. We will advise everyone of our return to sports (in its restricted form) shortly. As you can see from information on the AIS website, Level B which could be declared in the coming weeks, allows for much greater participation. Level C, which seems some time away (Term 3 or Term 4), is for normal training/ competition.
Wishing all the mothers and 'motherly ones’ this Sunday, a day that is filled with love, happiness and the gratitude that you deserve so much.
Given all of the above, I am confident that the College can recommence a modified sporting program within the next few weeks.

Minor change to June Long Weekend dates

Given the ongoing restrictions and pressures on all members of the community because of the coronavirus, the onset of winter, the additional changes to work and life and keeping in mind our boarders, the June Long Weekend will be extended by one day only.

Click here Plans for sports and other co-curricular activities During the week, I drew your attention to the advice of the National Cabinet in relation to community sports. The details are available on the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) website. The advice which we have is that it is highly unlikely that normal competitive sport will be allowed during Term 2 and there is no certainty of it being approved in Term 3. The June Long Weekend for Scots All Saints will begin at 3:00 pm on Thursday, 4 June with all classes recommencing on Wednesday, 10 June. I hope this enables all families to plan for a midterm break and some respite.

Schools are “social beings” I have never been a very social person. Outside of school I tend to be a bit of a “homebody”, preferring my own company and that of my family. Therefore, the need to socially isolate has not been as much of a burden for me as it has been for many others. Having said this, I certainly feel for our students who have been learning from home and have been separated from their friends and from their teachers. As I have written previously, coming to school presents daily social opportunities for students – and teachers – to meet up with their friends, and to approach learning as a collective and communal activity. Students “bounce off” each other in class, and assist each other to better grasp concepts. The final three days of last term, when we were operating in “total remote learning” mode were very difficult for all of us – a Zoom video class cannot replicate the interactions that occur when everyone is sharing the same learning space. However, it was a necessary method in the circumstances. In contrast, the beginning of this term has seen a lifting in mood, for a number of reasons. It was wonderful to catch up with colleagues, and even more wonderful to see students return to school. They appear genuinely pleased to be back, and it would seem that they have developed a new appreciation of the advantages of learning within classes, with their teachers and classmates. We look forward to welcoming more students back over the coming days and weeks.

Coupled with this has been the loosening of some government restrictions, allowing people to visit others. The recently announced “two people visitation rule” reflects the importance of connecting with others and the flow-on benefits for mental health. We were fortunate to be able to gain from this rule last Saturday. My wife Virginia celebrated her birthday, and it was terrific that we were able to have her parents join us for lunch, and then to have two of our friends over in the evening. I trust that you are also availing yourselves of the provisions of the rule to enable you to re-establish your connections with family and friends. Of course, we all trust that this measure is the first of many to steer our society and economy back towards a semblance of “normality”. However, as parents and as teachers, we must impress on our young people the importance of adhering to the rules as they are announced, in the hope that our families and friends remain as safe as possible.
AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK CENTRE The Monday afternoon Senior School After School Homework Centre will not be operating at the moment as there are no late buses to transport students home afterwards. The Year 7/8 Homework Centre will still be operating on the All Saints Campus.

The COVID-19 virus has had a major influence on the co-curricular programs at the College. From the various forms of advice and direction from Governments, sport governing bodies and local associations, we know that the opportunities to return to ‘normal’ will be gradual and different. Our staff that co-ordinate the various co-curricular programs are navigating the advice and currently formulating plans for our co-curricular programs to resume as soon as possible. We know that many of our students are ‘busting’ to get back into our co-curricular programs. To this end, our Co-curricular student prefects and their committee are compiling a short video which we hope to release next week. Sport The current advice from our sporting associations is that they are all planning to have some form of competition, with a very different competition structure to what we are used to. Current advice is that any form of competition will only be at best Term 3. As a College, we are continuing to explore alternative sport opportunities for our students with application of the three phases of the “National Framework for the Reboot of Community Sport” and based on the health advice and social distancing measures in place at the time. We encourage students to look for ways to do pre-season training whilst following the restrictions. Our Opens rugby boys have done some fitness, strength and core skills individual programs. We also have encouraged our netball girls to follow the NetFit program that has been

supported by Netball NSW. Any students wanting to get started on a simple individual program are encouraged to speak to the Head of Sport on their campus for direction. Additionally our equestrian lesson program resumes next Monday with riders receiving lessons with quite a few procedural adjustments being implemented to keep in line with social distancing measures and resumption of sport requirements. Music Programs and Pipes and Drums The current social distancing measures and restrictions for schools have allowed all individual music lessons to continue or resume for which we are very thankful to the music tutors, students and music department staff. The rearrangement of our music classrooms and available space allows for students to continue to learn and practice. We look forward to small group rehearsals in coming weeks. We will continue to look at date and opportunities for the rescheduling of music showcases, ensemble rehearsals, concerts, and performances later in the year. Please keep your ear (eye) out for some ‘digital concerts’ that are currently being prepared. The Pipes and Drums have also begun individual lessons and small groups practice. Mr Mackenzie and Mr Longmore have had to adjust their practice rooms and procedures slightly and thankfully due to the nature of playing pipes and drums they are easily able to socially distance. Rural Fire Service Cadets and Army Cadets The RFS Cadets hopefully can pick up from where they finished, in Term 3, and the students continue to complete the training course and then attend the RFS Graduation and Field Skills competition, held in October. continued page 6

Army Cadets Army Cadet Parades have been ceased under advice from the Australian Army Cadets. We fortunately have some flexibility with our Cadet program, so we can resume it when the health advice and restrictions are lifted. We are looking to move to ‘Zoom Parades’ to complete some of our theoretical training requirements. Strength and Conditioning and Winter Swimming Program Programming and coaching arrangements were taking place prior to the end of Term 1. We will
continue to prepare for a launch of our swimming program later in the year. Camps and Outdoor Education (Duke of Edinburgh) These programs are under review due to health restrictions. Stage 5 camps are not scheduled until the last week of the school year; we are hopeful that these programs will remain in place. The Stage 2 Years 3 and 4 camp has been rescheduled to late Term 4 also. There is still plenty of opportunity for students to be exploring ways of achieving components of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President
Parents and Friends – What is normal? It has been almost two months since our last column in The Roar, and so much has happened around the world, across our country and within our community. Who knew that we could cope with so much change in such a short period? While we have seen so much change, one thing has remained consistent and that has been the information provided to us by the College. As I stated in our last column, ensure you remain informed in this ever-changing landscape. As the College considers and implements further changes we will see a ‘new normal’ in our individual communities and within the College community. We remain confident that the decisions being made by the College executive are in the interests of our children and their education. Parents and Friends Meetings
boarding families have now held a number of informal catch up sessions which were both positive and uplifting, enabling parents to converse with Mr Weeks and Mr Le Couteur about processes and procedures being put in place specifically for our boarding students. Parents online were spread across the landscape from Sydney, out to Cootamundra, Bourke, Moree and in between, giving them an opportunity to maintain and strengthen connections with the College and staff. What a wonderful example of what is great about our community. Remember as a College community, we must work together to get through these trying times. Reach out to another parent, to see if they are OK, that’s all it takes. With the restrictions in place we have been considering our options and the need for our Term 2 Week 2 meeting, which was to have been yesterday. We are currently making arrangements for it to be held in the coming fortnight, and will advise details in coming days. It will most likely be in the form of an online meeting, and we hope to see a return of those new members of the College family that had started attending our meetings in Term 1. Online platforms have already enabled the College and our boarding families to remain socially connected whilst physically distanced. The

Cultural Rescue Guide It’s so exciting to have a taste of ‘normal’ returning to our College community with many of our students returning.
