A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Innovation Centre Official Opening On Tuesday, we held our official Innovation Centre opening on the Junior School. After delays brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, we have officially cut the ribbon and opened this great new learning space.

We held a small reception with representatives of the College Foundation and Presbyterian Church of NSW. Mr Adrian Lamrock, who was a previous Head of the Scots School now the State Moderator for the Presbyterian Church, was in attendance, along with General Manager, Mr Jeof Falls.

It was a great morning and very exciting for all students and staff who attended. We look forward to seeing how the Junior School students grow into this new way of learning.

The Bean Prize The Bean Prize – has been reinstated in the Senior School and will be presented to the student who, by their ‘efficiency at work, games and their influence on the life of the College, is deemed by the Head of College most worthy to receive it’.

This historic and prestigious award was implemented at All Saints’ College and named after Mr Edwin Bean, Head of College (1877-1888), to encourage excellence in all areas – including sport, culture, honour, generosity of mind and conduct.

The award will be issued at Presentation Day in December to the Year 12 student who most embodies these attributes.

Matilda – A sell-out success!

Roadworks on O’Connell Road (Senior Campus) We’ve been advised that Bathurst Regional Council will be undertaking roadworks on O’Connell Road from Monday, 9 May, until Friday, 27 May 2022 (weather permitting).

The hours of work will be between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm.

This will most likely impact the flow of traffic into and out of the Senior School, so please allow extra time at drop-off and pick-up.

COVID-19 Vaccination in School Students The National COVID-19 Vaccination Taskforce has made contact with all schools across Australia to encourage the uptake of vaccination for school students. Vaccination is now available for students from 5 to 11 years of age and is recommended to reduce the chance of catching COVID-19 and causing disruption to learning.

A factsheet has been provided for parents in regards to vaccination. I have attached it here for your reference.

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

At the cross: Forsaken by his Father and compassion for his mother.

With Mother’s Day the focal point of this week, I’d like to highlight one of my favourite Bible passages, which is during Jesus's torturous crucifixion. As Jesus hangs on the cross gasping for breath, enduring the insults of the crowd and bearing the pain of the cross, he speaks to his mother - Mary, and his disciple - John, as they were standing at the foot of his cross, watching on in horror.

John records the interaction in his Gospel writings (19:26-27), "When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home."

If we contrast these words with Jesus's cry to his Father in Heaven spoken soon after – “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me” (Matthew 27:46) – we can clearly see the depth of his compassion for

his mother. Jesus cries out to his Father when he is at his lowest point bearing the weight of humanity’s sin.

He is perishing under the weight of responsibility and pain and shall soon descend to Hell. However, despite this, his thoughts briefly turn to his mother, knowing that, as a 1st century widow, she will be grieving and feeling destitute. While he struggles for life, he gives his mother Mary to a new son, and John a new mother.

According to Church History, John would eventually take Mary with him as they travelled to parts of the Roman Empire, sharing the good news of Jesus's resurrection. They would end up in Ephesus, a city on the Aegean coastline in Turkey. There Mary would eventually die and be buried.

My prayer for the mums reading this is that they may realise how much they are loved. And how thankful we all are for the way you all have invested yourselves into your families' lives. May you realise God’s great compassion and love for you on Sunday.

Infants CRU Infants CRU meets every Thursday at lunchtime.

We had a fun Term 1, filled with games, singing and a short Bible talk - with an opportunity for students to share or ask questions. Thank you to Mr Boss-Walker and some Primary School helpers for giving up their lunch time to help run an exciting and engaging lunchtime experience for those students who want to come and have fun and learn more about God’s love.

NAPLAN Inter-House Cross Country Carnival The Junior School Inter-House Cross Country Carnival was held on Monday, 2 May, in glorious weather. I would like to congratulate all of the students for their efforts on the day. I would also like to thank Mr Wilkinson and Mrs Tallentire for convening the carnival and all of the parents who assisted as volunteer officials. Age Champion and runners up will be presented with their awards at tomorrow’s assembly.

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be involved in NAPLAN exams online next week.

Kindergarten 2023 Parent Information Night We welcome all parents of potential 2023 Kindergarten Students to an information night on Thursday, 26 May. Please see the College website for more details: scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au

On Tuesday, 24 May, we will be hosting the Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools (HICES) Cross Country Carnival. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our runners to compete on their home track.

Mother’s Day Breakfast Tomorrow, Friday, 6 May, we will invite all of the mums of students in Prep and Kindergarten for a special breakfast. This will take place in the Preparatory School playground from 8:00 – 9:00 am.

Prep and Junior School Disco The Junior School Disco will be on tomorrow night, Friday, 6 May. In the days leading up to the disco, the students have been participating in dance lessons from a dance company called “Footsteps”. The theme for the disco is “Fancy Dress”.

The disco will begin at 5:30 pm for all students. At 6:15 pm, we will have an intermission where the Prep and Kindergarten students will get picked up. The Year 1 to 6 students will then stay until 7:15 pm. Children will be provided with a fruit box drink and a snack during the intermission.

Year 6 Camp The Year 6 students will be travelling to Lake Macquarie Crusaders Camp from Wednesday, 11 to Friday, 13 May. This is a fantastic camp experience where they participate in some wonderful experiences such as sailing. The bus departs at 6:30 am.

Buddy programs – connecting our student community This week marks the start of the buddy program for Year 5 and our Preparatory School (Prep) students, which is really exciting and enjoyable for both, as you can see in all the photos!

Our Preparatory School provides us with the opportunity to run concurrent buddy programs, with Year 5 and Prep, and Year 6 and Kindy, and is an important part of the pastoral care and wellbeing initiatives at the Junior School.

The Buddy program offers so many positives for our students; •

One of the long-term benefits of Year 5 working with our Prep students is that the relationships formed this year between the students will continue next year as we welcome the Prep students into our Junior School Kindergarten class. The transition into ‘big school’ is a major milestone in a young student’s life and already having a positive relationship with an older student helps them feel confident and increases their sense of belonging in the school environment.

This week we are starting our formal Peer Support program, run by the Year 6 students. They have worked hard to prepare themselves for this leadership opportunity and are really looking forward to working with their group of students, ranging from Kindy to Year 5.

As with our buddy programs, the Peer Support program helps the students feel connected to each other across all year groups, helping build the sense of belonging we want all our students to have at the College. I wish the Year 6 students all the best as they undertake this important leadership role in the Junior School.

Their team will guide you and support you to complete your project leading to the final test – a swim test in our eight-meter diameter x five-metre deep and 250,000-litre test tank.

During your work experience, the regular activities of our workshop will be underway all around you and you may get to see a Navy ROV under test before or after a major service activity.

The work for the Build Your Own ROV project is hands-on electronics assembly and test and will involve electrical soldering.

They run their work experience for one week in Term 2 and one week on Term 3 on a “first-in” basis. They limit the places in each week to 3 people as our work experience is conducted in a workshop environment and we need to ensure that we can properly supervise and assist you.

Amazing results at the Royal Bathurst Show Last weekend the SASC Cattle Team participated at the Bathurst Royal Show. The team finished the season with a bang with some amazing results. Being so close to Sydney Royal and so soon after the holidays, this show is somewhat challenging. Special thanks to all of the students who spent Anzac day helping with washing and clipping the cattle – they arrived at 8:00 am and didn’t finish until after 6:00 pm – if that is not dedication, I don’t know what is.

We exhibited 12 of our stud Limousin’s including cows and calves, some young heifers and a steer.

Our home bred Limousin heifer, Scots All Saints Sweet Augustine, took out the Junior Champion Female award for Limousins which was a very satisfying result as she was up against many quality stud heifers. Paige Hatton paraded her extremely professionally. She then went on to take the Supreme Limousin female. This heifer also took out Grand Champion School Exhibit, which was an outstanding result. She was paraded beautifully by Harry Croker.

Our senior cow, paraded by Phoebe Shearman, won the Senior Champion Female in both the open and

schools classes. She can be a little ‘naughty’ and special mention to Phoebe, who handled her so well.

A huge achievement was that this heifer then went onto represent the Limousin breed in the final Supreme female class. She was up against some extremely highquality animals with Charolais, Poll Herefords, Simmentals and Speckle Park females. It was a highlight when she was crowned the Supreme Female exhibit of the show. A very satisfying moment in terms of the College’s breeding program.

We exhibited a steer that Taylor Kleinschafer paraded in the steer classes. After winning his class, he then went on to win the Champion Steer of the show and credit to the students who ‘fitted’ him as they won the best presented award as well.

Many of our students won awards in both the Junior Paraders and Junior Judging. In the Junior Parader’s we had Charlotte Lindsay, Lillian Oke and Philippa Webb win their classes, so all went up for the Champion Intermediate Parader – it was a very tough class with continued page 8

some extremely experienced paraders. Massive congratulations must go to Lillian Oke, who took out the Champion Intermediate parader.

In the Junior Judging, the results were outstanding.

Many of our students made the finals which meant they had to do a ‘speech’ explaining why they placed a group of four heifers as they did. This is very intimidating in front of a large crowd. Each and every one of them did an amazing job. In the juniors, Ethan Abel placed 1st with Charlie McKiernan and Teagan Chapman receiving a Highly Commended. In the seniors, Lily Moore placed 1st, Paige Hatton placed 2nd, and Jessica Mills received a Highly Commended. Special congratulations need to be given to Lily Moore, who won the Supreme Junior Judge of the 2022 Bathurst Royal Show.

One of the weekend's highlights was the amazing results in the Young Rural Achievers Awards. This involves the students submitting a resume and letter and then having an interview by a panel prior to the show. Scots All Saints took out all the Champion’s in two of the three sections, which is a phenomenal result. Talk about dressing up a bunch of kids and a few cows and calves very quickly – our team decided on the theme of Tradies, and the photo says it all. The team was placed 2nd, and I was so proud of their team effort in this fun event.

cattle! Our younger members proved the future of the team is secure, but it was also bitter sweet to have our last show with our phenomenal Year 12 students. Words cannot express how much these students have contributed to this program, and to come along to Bathurst Royal to help out the younger students just shows their amazing character. Special thanks to Charlotte Lindsay, Lillian Oke, Harriett Mitchell, Clare Mawhood and Kirilee Scott. You will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.

Sheep Team success The College Sheep Team attended Bathurst Show last weekend in a slightly different capacity than usual. As the stud ewes are currently lambing and couldn’t be exhibited, 12 sheep team members volunteered to help out at the show as stewards in the sheep, horse and cattle sections. Despite the poor weather, these students had a smile on their faces and received high praise across the board from the judges they worked with in their respective rings and learnt plenty about all of the work that goes on behind-the-scenes to make a country show successful.

Students from both the Sheep and Cattle teams were able to take a break from their responsibilities on Saturday morning to participate in a number of sheep judging classes for meat sheep, merino sheep, fleeces and handlers. With more than 50 students entering each of these classes, there was some stiff competition.

Still the SASC students threw themselves into these classes with enthusiasm (even those students who had no experience with sheep judging or handling).

Later in the day, Paige Hatton was awarded second place in the Meat Sheep judging class, while SASC had a clean sweep in the Merino Sheep judging with Eva Green placing first, Lillian Oke placing second, and Marcus Wythe placing third.

A huge thanks to those Sheep Team students who attended the show: the Bathurst Show Society was incredibly impressed by your dedication and attitude.

From the Scots School archives

A HISTORY OF HISTORY EXCURSIONS Being the oldest settlement west of the Blue Mountains, schools in Bathurst are exceptionally well placed to visit a large number of notable sites for History classes. Over the years, the Scots History Department undertook a number of excursions to places close to Bathurst to experience first hand many places and items that are part of our heritage.

The prosperity of Bathurst and the Central West owes much to the Gold Rushes, and Hill End provides an excellent place to explore the history of that period. Scots students visited there a number of times over the years.

The impact of war on the community can be studied at very close quarters with the various honour boards located in the Dining Room on the All Saints Campus. The story of the Scots College Branch School is an example of the impact of world war on a local community. From the same period, Cowra was the site of an army camp—Mr Maher’s Uncle Fred was one of the troops brought there to do their training. The former Prisoner of War Camp is also part of a war story. The site of the camp can still be visited.

Further afield, Canberra has provided the chance to visit some of Australia’s major public buildings, including the Australian War Memorial. For Geography classes, Canberra is an example of a planned city. Like Canberra, Sydney is a (rather long) day trip from Bathurst, but offers much in the way of sites from the early settlement of New South Wales and the turbulent years of war and depression.

Day trips to Sydney have also included visits to two institutions that have collections of artefacts from ancient civilisations: the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University and the Nicholson Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University.

SPORTS DRAW

Monique Hooper, Year 4, was awarded most successful Primary School Baker at the Royal Bathurst Show last weekend.

She received second place for her cupcakes, second place for her plate of biscuits, and first place for her plate of pikelets.

This was her first time entering into any show baking.
