Our Chaplain arrives After a number of false starts to return to Australia from New Zealand, Rev. Michael Bennett, his wife Mel and children – Peter, Emily and Lucy, have arrived. We are delighted that they are now settled in Bathurst and in the College, and we look forward to getting to know them in the future. The Senior School students welcomed Rev. Michael at Tuesday’s Chapel and he was able to share with them his vision for supporting all in our College Community as our College Chaplain.

ANZAC Day 2021 While COVID-19 restrictions have eased considerably, there are still rules around the services for ANZAC Day 2021. Each community has determined a plan for these services. Here in Bathurst, student representatives, from all schools, will attend a memorial service at the RSL Centre on Friday. Students from across our College will be in attendance. College based ANZAC services will take place at special assemblies during this week.

Show this year. The results are a real credit to Ms Dawes and the committed students, parents and supporters who have worked so hard for this success. Congratulations to you!

Scots All Saints – Royal Easter Show Champions!

An ANZAC message for us all Melanie, the kids and I would like to thank you for receiving us into your community for our first week.

During the last three years we have been working in New Zealand and as we head into our national ANZAC commemorations, it has been interesting experiencing it from the ‘aNZac’ perspective.

Indeed, there are many interesting subtleties between our nations’ approaches – such as their Haka which generally features in the service.

Many years ago I produced a documentary on Gallipoli. During my research, I came across the story of a small wooden cross that greeted the Australian and New Zealand soldiers just above ANZAC Cove. As the troops advanced towards the front, the wooden cross stood over a soldier’s grave who had fallen on the first day and it read: “Halt comrade, Halt!

The cross, and its message, were a warning to the men who passed it to think and prepare for the great Kingdom of God which is to come beyond the grave. As you know thousands of ANZACs would immediately follow this first soldier into the life that follows.

We are now 106 years on from that fateful battle, and the message on that small wooden cross still carries much weight today. Every man who passed that cross in 1915, whether they survived the war or not has now passed away. From a Christian perspective, this is where the Gospel finds its fulfillment. The great news is that someone is waiting for us, with arms open wide - the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. As he said to his disciples before his own death: “Do not let your hearts be troubled [about death]. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3).

Jesus calls us, much like the message on the cross above, to prepare our lives by believing and committing our way to Jesus Christ.

As you pass me by, For as you are now, once was I, Therefore, prepare and follow me.”

March Regional Visits With the easing of Covid restrictions in 2021, SASC has resumed Regional Visits to connect with families in rural NSW. During March, Head of Boarding, Mr Anthony Le Couteur, and Community Liaison, Amanda Kemp, visited the communities of Narromine, Bourke and Warren, providing opportunities to catch up with our wonderful current families, share our educational vision with those wishing to learn about educational opportunities for their children at Scots All Saints College, and catching up with a few younger faces from the past of SASC (and some mice!).

Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

Welcome Back It was great to welcome so many students back to school on Monday morning and see the playground bursting with life once again. The new soccer field was a popular meeting ground on the first day back as students reconnected over a kick or two.

Some final touches were added to the Preparatory School during the break with the addition of the cubby house which was transported from Campus East (Scots) and a new coconut swing rope. A path linking the Prep School with the Library and Junior School was also added whilst safety improvements were also made to the car park area.

Next Monday we will resume our weekly Chapel services.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve been able to come together for Chapel and we look forward to welcoming Rev. Michael Bennett on Monday.

On Friday 30 April we will hold our first assembly of the term. Our first assembly will acknowledge the spirit of the ANZACs and contain a special service to honour those men and women who have sacrificed so much to make our world a better place.

This committee has been working hard over the past 18 months, focusing on the teaching and learning that will take place in the new Innovation Centre.

Following the presentation, Junior School staff came together to discuss an approach to learning known as PBL or Problem Based Learning. PBL will see students explore a real-life problem related to their current unit of work in Science and Technology. They will work in teams through a series of steps to develop solutions to these problems before showcasing their ideas to an audience.

In Week 6 students will take part in a range of STEM and Innovative learning activities as we launch our Innovation Centre. A highlight of this week will be the official opening of the centre on Wednesday 26 May at 6:00 pm. Invitations were sent home this week and you are warmly invited to attend this special occasion.

Junior School Choir Students in Years 2-4 with an interest or passion for singing are invited to join Mrs Tamsitt on Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:45 am as part of our Junior School Choir. Singing is such an integral part of our College community with so many benefits for our brains, hearts and souls. We are excited to resume choirs across the College abiding by health guidelines.

The Year 2-4 Choir will occur in the Music Centre at Campus West (Saints) and your children will walk down to their class at 8:45 am as a group. This choir is an optional ensemble for all students in Years 2-4 and is running before school to reduce withdrawal from academic classes. There is no charge to join this ensemble and we look forward to singing with you and hearing you sing for our school.

NAPLAN 2021 In May 2021 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and assesses the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

NAPLAN is a good temperature check for individual students and their families and provides our school with data that we can use to inform future practice.

Australian Early Development Census In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.

Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/ carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/ carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

New Staff We welcome Reverend Michael Bennett to the Scots All Saints community as our College Chaplain.

Reverend Bennett and his family joins us from New Zealand.

We also welcome Miss Paloma Bellingham to the Stage 3 staff to teach 5M whilst Mrs Murray is on Long Service Leave this term.

Outdoor Education Camps Year 8 has been at camp this week in the Glenworth Valley, a tributary to the Hawkesbury River, canoeing and hiking. This camp provides a wonderful experience for the students to learn to be independent and to rely on each other for support.

Year 7 has been to Wombaroo in the Southern Highlands this week as well. They have been taking part in a range of challenging outdoor activities which will help them build resilience, form new friends and become more independent.

Year 6 will go to Lake Macquarie next week. This camp is based at the Crusaders Camp where they have recently renovated. They will stay in a tent one night and in cabins the other. The students will take part in activities like abseiling, sailing and canoeing.

Stage 5 Team Leaders Welcome back to Term 2. The days have been lovely this week although the hint of things to come has been evident in the crisp morning air. A very big welcome to the new Stage 5 students this term; Phoebe Shearman, Olivia Robertson, Ben Parnell, Matthew Anderson and Peter Bennett.

Congratulations to all the Year 9 and 10 students involved in the Sydney Easter Show and the Young Rural Achiever Interviews that were held at school on Tuesday 20th April.

Year 10 completed in teams in their Invictus Networking Games on Wednesday afternoon. This was a fabulous event that the students immersed themselves in the challenges set. Outstanding team work and problem-solving skills were evident throughout the event.

We wish all students that are involved in winter sport the best of luck as most competitions begin this weekend, so don’t forget to keep an eye out for when your team is playing in the sports draws.

Ms Pearce and Mr Germech Stage 6 Team Leaders Year 11 and 12 have settled in well and eager to build on their learning from Term 1. Senior students this term will begin participating in social learning groups during their Year Group meeting times which will alternate each week with Assembly. These groups will provide a great way for students to support each other and share ideas, insight and knowledge and plan for assessments and examinations.

The students are keen for winter sport to begin. Boys rugby in particular has seen a long absence due to cancellations of games in 2020. Boys who are playing rugby are looking forward to their matches this weekend versus Cranbrook, then onto watch Joey’s versus Knox 1st XV as the curtain raiser before watching the Rebels versus Waratahs at Bankwest Stadium.

Finally, the Year 12 common room has been under construction over the holidays and the renovations are nearly complete. The space has an open concept with kitchen, study and leisure spaces for students to interact with one another. Lockers have been allocated to students and are placed in two locations close to the common room area.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

Well hello again. I hope your break was amazing.

We have plenty happening on the sporting front this week with our Netball and Hockey seasons starting this Saturday. The local Soccer competition kicked off last weekend, and it was awesome to see so many youngsters kicking a few goals in the name of comradery and friendly competition.

The only downside is we still can’t tuck into a bag of oranges at half time – stupid COVID! But I suppose anything is better than last season, right?

Could I please remind all Soccer, Netball and Hockey players that registrations are due before taking to the field or court this Saturday. If we can get this done I’d be a very happy chappy.

Let’s talk a little Rugby shall we?

This Saturday our U16s, 2nd XV and 1st XV will travel to Trinity Grammar School (Summer Hill) to play trial games against Cranbrook. Due to school camps in our Middle School, there are no games this weekend at

U13 or U14 level. We are super grateful that Trinity Grammar and Cranbrook have allowed us to attend and give us the opportunity to play.

Our Active Afternoons Winter program starts this week on Campus West (Saints). With our Year 7 and 8 students away on camp this Thursday, we’re going to do things a little differently. Middle School students who play Netball or Soccer will train while everyone else gets the chance to enjoy a practice run on our new Cross Country course! While on Friday, our Junior School will be either busy with their Netball and Soccer training or playing tennis, golf or gymnastics.

For our Senior School, our regular Winter Active Afternoon's program will continue.

A reminder to make sure you have the correct Winter sports uniform ready to go.

Finally, we didn’t get a chance at the end of last term to give our Cricket teams some love.

On Grand Final weekend we showed our mettle, taking home the Opens and Under 15s titles while our Under 11s split the honours with a super exciting draw! Well done to all the players, coaches, and families who made the season such a success.

Royal Sydney Easter Show - What a Show!

The lightweight classes were next and we had a strong line up which all looked super. A stunning Limousin steer bred

by Phil Kirk and paraded by Victoria Webb took out Champion Lightweight Steer. One of our Angus steers who was bred by the Mawhood Family of Oberon and prepared by Clare Mawhood and Lily Moore won the Reserve Champion Lightweight Steer.

We then moved onto the Heavyweight classes and we had Lillian Oke’s and Jessica Mill’s steer – Rodger, win his class.

The last class of this section we had Eva Green and her Alyssa Cranston and Ralph.

This show was quite surreal with phenomenal results across a number of classes. I am not sure I can even remember a team taking out so many broad ribbons at one show and for this to be the Sydney Royal Easter Show, which is the 'crème de la crème' was absolutely mind blowing.

Our first steer to go out was the loveable Limousin steer, ‘Ralph’ who was beautifully prepared by Aly Cranston and Lily Kable. Ralph came 2nd in his class and then went on to win the first of our broad ribbons by being awarded Reserve Champion School Steer.

stunning and exceptional Limousin Steer ‘Rufus’, bred by Phil Kirk from Wilworril Limousins, Peak Hill, stood out and was awarded GRAND CHAMPION STEER OF THE SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW 2021!

The next day we had our Trade Steer, a ‘ball of muscle’ who had lovingly been prepared by Gabrielle Toby compete in the Trade steer classes. In these classes the steers are judged against the Woolworths market specifications which can be challenging. Gaby paraded ‘Rothman’ with great pride and they both looked amazing.

After much deliberation, the judge walked up to Gaby and presented her steer with Champion Trade Steer!

Finally, the trophy classes were awarded and we were very proud to have two of the three Limousin team steers selected out of over 60 steers represented. The winners then go up against all other breeds as a team, based on their carcase results. We were awarded 1st place and were presented with the Stan Hill Trophy.

To top off our show experience – Scots All Saints College was awarded the Eve Cullen Memorial Trophy for the Most Successful Exhibitor in the steer section.

Special thanks must go to the many people who contributed to these successes: Clare Mawhood.

We were all on such a high after an amazing couple of days and with great support the team watched our selected school representative in the Junior Parader’s Competition. Felicity Webb had been selected by an independent judge via video link to be our parade and what a job she did. She won her class which meant she had to go up for champion.

Felicity paraded the school steer ‘Ralph’ with great style and was awarded Champion School Parader.

In only two days of judging, we came away with seven champions – which was just amazing.

Next was the auction for the sale of the steers. This was another amazing experience with one of our steers topping the sale, selling for a whopping $21.10/kg.

We then had to stay over the Easter Weekend and our school had many media experiences including a live cross from the Sunrise team. The students were interviewed and had a great time and experience.

The steers left us Monday morning for processing, and with high anticipation after such phenomenal live results we awaited our results. We were not disappointed. Our Lightweight Champion steer live – Rowan, took out the Champion Lightweight Carcase and another steer – Rodney (Rowan’s brother), was awarded Reserve Champion Lightweight Carcase. The Mawhoods family’s Angus steers were awarded both 1st and 2nd place in the Virtual Taste Test classes.

We also won a heavyweight class with one of our homebred steers.

Last but definitely not least the wonderful team members – I am so proud to work with every one of you - your professionalism, fabulous leadership, endless commitment, great maturity, exceptional reliability and incredible work ethic is something that makes me so happy – I am honoured to be able to work alongside you all and you are incredibly inspiring.

National Youth Science Forum - inspiring young scientists Two Scots All Saints College students have been successful in gaining acceptance into the highly regarded and tightly contested National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). The NYSF is a national forum which aims to inspire Australia's leading young scientists and provides them with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists and undertake cutting edge technology experiences. Austin Markwick and Jac Burge share their thoughts on this incredible opportunity.

Mrs Sarah O’Neill, Senior Learning Support and Enrichment JAC BURGE: Attending the National Youth Science Forum was an incredible experience that I got to share with almost 600 other Year 12 students from across Australia. The 2021 NYSF Year 12 Program featured online sessions from two Nobel Prize winners, over 20 top experts in subjects ranging from venom to drones, workshops with leading scientists and STEM organisations, and an array of live crosses to some of the world’s best science and technology facilities, including to Casey Station in Antarctica and CERN in Switzerland. Science@Home allowed participants to carry out a number of small experiments at home led by science communicators, such as extracting DNA from strawberries and creating biodegradable plastic from starch! Along with the digital program, I also had the opportunity to attend several in-person visits in Canberra, including an ecology field day with the University of Canberra, a microbiology forensics lab prac at ANU, a design and exhibit testing workshop at Questacon, and a tour of Geoscience

Australia, where we got to chat live with the crew of one of their seafloor mapping and research vessels over Zoom. NYSF has broadened my knowledge of all the exciting research that is going on in Australia, and what role STEM will play in our future. This program has inspired me to pursue a career in science, and I would highly recommend it to any upcoming year 12s who have an interest in STEM and science communication.

AUSTIN MARKWICK: In January I was fortunate enough to attend the National Youth Science Forum, following a written application and interview process throughout last year.

The National Youth Science Forum occurs over three weeks, in the summer holidays of every year, and has been operating in Australia since 1984. The program is a fantastic opportunity for Year 12 students from all around Australia to come together to celebrate their passions for the STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – and be introduced to the endless capabilities of science in the future of our nation and the world. continued page 12

the ability for some NYSF students to travel inter-state, this year the program operated through an online platform, where we had the chance to attend hundreds of different online Zoom lectures over the three weeks. These sessions gave NYSF students the chance to talk live with nationally and internationally renowned scientists, such as Professor Brian Schmidt: a Nobel Prize winner for Physics, Professor Barry Marshall: a Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, and the television science commentator Dr. Karl, as many of you are probably familiar with.

Besides these more formal lectures with famous scientists, we were also placed into smaller interest groups with students and NYSF staff leaders from all around the country, based on our preferred STEM fields, mine being Physics and Maths. My group contained 20 people from all around Australia. We met with our interest groups on many occasions via Zoom meetings and this was just a great opportunity to have some downtime from the rest of the program, as it allowed us to make heaps of new friends, test each other’s patience with annoying riddles, and play random games of Kahoot. Despite not being with all these people face-to-face in the one location, as the program would have allowed in other years, the video calls were no barrier to me feeling as though everyone was still together.

Fortunately, during the second week, the NYSF allowed limited numbers of students, in regions unaffected by COVID outbreaks, to attend different in-person visits to research facilities and universities over three days. I was lucky enough to go to the Australian National University in Canberra, attending tours of their different facilities with other students from across NSW and Victoria. At ANU’s Nuclear Physics School, I went on a tour through their 22-metre-high Heavy Ion Accelerator – which fires particles charged to over 15 million volts, and I also was fortunate enough to speak with some of the leading scientists in the world’s quantum computing industry, which deals with extremely complicated ideas, but will hopefully change the way that we interact with the rest of the universe in the future.

Overall, the National Youth Science Forum has been one of the best experiences of my life so far, and I have made many new contacts and memories from the three weeks that I attended. For Year 11 students, I would definitely consider applying for the program if you have any interest in science.
