A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
Once again, welcome to the start of a new school term and the ‘new normal’ given the many challenges we are facing with the Coronavirus pandemic. The return to schools for staff and students has been debated over the past weeks and there are many ‘models’ being developed across the education sector. This, of course, illustrates just how unique each school is in regards to its location, size, age of students, transport links etc...
We are not ‘out of the woods’ yet and we need to remain extremely vigilant for changing circumstances but I must say to all parents, staff, students and community, I am proud of the way you are managing this really challenging event. Scots All Saints at its best!
Our strategy, based on the medical advice of the Commonwealth and State Health Officers, is to return to 'normal’ operations from 11 May. As I write, we already have 75% of students in class each day and we have been notified by many other parents that their children will return next week. It has been remarkable to witness the immediate lift in morale amongst the students and staff as we gathered together in familiar places to begin the journey back. Our school is blessed with caring and dedicated staff who have worked exceptionally hard to maintain continuity of education for our children. They are an impressive team that has responded very quickly to an ever-changing set of circumstances in a most positive way. I commend all staff to you as they continue to teach, administer, counsel, clean, maintain, transport and care for all of us. ANZAC Day tribute
Each ANZAC Day, 25 April, we come together in a national day of remembrance for all those who have served for their country. Although it was a little different this year with no marches or mass gatherings, we felt it was important to keep the ANZAC spirit alive, honouring our veterans and services members. More than 200 ex-students of the College were involved in military campaigns throughout World War One (WWI) and 34 ex-students were killed in action or died from their wounds. Many others fought in subsequent wars. Honour boards, some medals and photographs are on display in the Dining Hall and Watson Room of the Old Bathurstians’ Museum at All Saints Campus. A special ANZAC DAY ceremony was held at the Bean and Long Memorial on All Saints Campus. College Captains, Natalia Burgess and Harry Dickenson from Year 12, Father Paul Woodhart and Christian Blasig from Year 9 hosted the short yet inspiring service. Students change to winter uniform in Term 2 and 3
The move to Term 2 means a move to the winter uniform for all students across the College. With the colder weather now upon us, it is important for students to be warm and comfortable during the day and especially outside in the playground. The expectation is that all students wear long sleeves, long trousers for boys and tights for girls. Blazers are to be worn to and from school enabling children to keep warm and represent the College with pride. Mr Weeks recently announced that during the current arrangements, all students are required to wear their PE uniform to school on the days they have either Class Sport or PE. If you are unsure of these days, please check with your class teacher or Year Coordinator. Please ensure all uniform items are clearly labelled with your child's name. Teachers regularly talk to students about the importance of being responsible for their own property so your cooperation in reinforcing this message is appreciated. A visual reference of the Scots All Saints College uniform protocols has been published as a guide for parents and students and it is available on the College website via this link. Thank you to our wonderful student representatives who volunteered to help showcase the Scots All Saints uniform this way to help others. I'm sure you will agree, they did a wonderful job!
Mood Boost Challenge video
Thank you to everyone who participated in the latest Mood Boost Challenge - Lip Sync Battle. There were many creative video clips submitted by students and their families from across the College. We hope these videos have brought some joy during these times of social distancing and isolation at home. As most of our students are back at school now, this may be our last video in this series for now. Feel free to continue mood boosting with your family to spread some happiness. Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School
It was great to welcome so many students back to school on Tuesday morning and see the playground bursting with life once again. With such a large number of students returning to school this week, all classes have resumed face-to-face lessons. Teachers will continue to provide remote online learning through Seesaw for those students who remain at home. Staff have done a superb job preparing and providing the learning program for lessons in the classroom whilst continuing the daily planning guide and activities through Seesaw remote learning. Social Distancing Measures Indicators (crosses) have been placed around the campus to guide students in regards to social distancing when using outdoor seating, lining up for classes and in the Dining Hall. The Dining Hall has been set up with more tables so that we limit the amount of students sitting on each table, however students can still choose to sit with their friends. We are in the process of moving some of our larger classes to the biggest classrooms as student numbers continue to increase with the transition back to school. This will provide adequate spacing for social distancing. Our Year 4 classes were moved on Tuesday afternoon so that the walls can be knocked out to double the size of their classrooms. As a result, Year 4 Encourage have moved to the Junior School Staff room adjacent to Kinder whilst Year 4 Inspire have moved to the first computer lab. Our Pre-Kindergarten classes also changed rooms today. Due to the large number of students in the 2-3 day room these classes will now move into the 4-5 day room. Students who normally attend the 4-5 day room will be moved to the 2-3 day room. Safe Hygiene Practices All students are encouraged to wash their hands regularly, use hand sanitiser and to stay at home if they have flu-like symptoms.

Temperature Checks When students in Kindergarten to Year 4 arrive at school, they should take their belongings to their classroom as usual. This will be supervised by staff to ensure social distancing measures are followed. Once belongings have been left at the classroom, students are welcome to go to the playground where staff will again monitor students social distancing. At the beginning of the formal school day, each student will have their temperature taken and with a 'nocontact' thermometer and their symptoms checked. If your child is found to have respiratory symptoms or a temperature above 37.2C, they will be referred to the on campus Health Centre for a second review and, in most instances parents will be contacted to collect them. Notification of Student Absences Could parents please use the ‘absence form’ in Care Monkey to notify the College if your child is sick. Kiss, Drop and Collect Procedures for Pre K - Year 4 We are encouraging parents to ‘Kiss, Drop and Collect’ all Junior School students at the Stage 1 car park or near Reception if that is closer to your child’s class. Please drop off and pick up as normal at your preferred location. Encourage your child to say goodbye at the gate and to meet you back at the gate in the afternoon. Parents of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students can take their child to their classroom but we ask that you drop off or collect from outside the room and adhere to social distancing requirements. Assemblies and Chapels For the time being these events continue to be postponed. Physical Education Uniform PE lessons have resumed this week so students can once again wear their PE uniform on the day that they have their PE lesson. Co-curricular Sport There will be no co-curricular sport training or matches until further notice.

We are pleased to be back in the classroom bringing a little more normality to the daily routine for the students. Due to the large number of students returning to school this week, all classes resumed as face-to-face lessons from the first day back on Tuesday, 28 April. Remote learning through Canvas has continued for those students who remain at home. A warm welcome back to our continuing students and our five new students! It has been wonderful to reconnect with our young people, both here on campus and remotely. I have been impressed with the way our students have adapted to and embraced the current situation. As a College we are grateful to our teachers who have demonstrated creativity and agility in their approach to ensuring education continues for our students.
Preparing for cool weather We are expecting a significant cool change at the end of this week. Please check that your child has adequate items of winter uniform as we begin to move towards the cooler months.
Engaging with remote learning Teachers are continuing to provide materials for students working remotely. Whilst we support a flexible timetable to accommodate different family schedules, it is important that parents check that their child is engaging with and completing the set work. Parents will be contacted if a student’s level of engagement is causing concern to teachers.

Sports Uniform Just a reminder that students may wear their College sports uniform to and from school on the days they have a practical PE lesson. Remote Learning Resources Please be aware that we have 24/7 access to many of our usual library resources and a large number of additional online learning resources have been collated to assist students and families during this difficult time. The SASC Library site is easily accessed via the Links button on the CANVAS dashboard. This Links page also provides easy access to other useful remote learning resources including the College email, the ELES Study Skills site, Clickview, Wordflyers and Edrolo.

International Boarders enjoy their on-campus holidays As a special one-off arrangement to keep us safe in these uncertain times, Director of Boarding, Mr Anthony Le Couteur arranged for the international students to stay in Marsden House on All Saints Campus during the school holidays from 8 – 27 April. We had a great, relaxing time with each other. We played sports every day in the sports centre. Brothers, Joey and Jack from Laos are great badminton players, and friends, Kenny from Hong Kong and John from mainland China are good at basketball. We also played lots of games during the holidays. Our teachers, Mr Walsh and Mr Goddard lent us their Wii devices. We really appreciated that and enjoyed playing them. Joey, Kenny, and Cyrus from Hong Kong were good at Mario Kart. At first, John wasn’t as good as the others but he improved a great deal. Surprisingly, Mr Goddard was the best player! We also played UNO with international students rules. It was a lot of fun and also helped us learn together and build our English-speaking skills. These activities were all good to build friendships. Sometimes we also cooked our lunch and dinner. Nick, Yuma, and Mrs Woodlock made some cookies and cakes and we ate them outside in the fresh, country air and sunshine. It was an awesome time. The dining hall staff brought us pieces of salmon and barramundi and we cooked them on our own and helped each other.

fruit, a variety of delicious meals and even a few treats like pizza. We also would like to say thank you to our English Teacher, Mrs Nelson who came and did some extra English classes with fun activities on most days and all staff who took care of us during the holiday. We appreciate your kindness and help. Yuma Okamoto International Boarder Prefect On the last day, we ordered Thai food. We had a great time having dinner together. Eating together is a great way to relax and enjoy each others company. We celebrated Easter with our residential staff who organised an Easter egg hunt. There were lots of eggs and the staff were very generous. For some international students, this was their first time experiencing a Easter egg hunt. Perth, from Thailand and my roommate, found the most chocolates and she also found the biggest Easter egg. During our holidays, international students spent a wonderful time together. We are very thankful to Director of Boarding, Mr Le Couteur and International Student Liaison Officer, Mrs Mackay for organising our 'home'. Performing Arts Academy news Welcome to another term of creativity and performance. We have some very exciting projects starting this term and I encourage students with new found time to learn some other skills!

The College held an online service including Christian Blasig (Year 9) who played beautifully. We look forward to our 2021 Marching Band’s chance to remember. It is so wonderful to have our students back at school, rehearsing, creating and playing! Just now I can hear a drama class warming up with some amusing theatre sport games.
