Welcome back to Term 2 It’s been wonderful to see everyone’s smiling faces as they return to school after the Easter break.

We got straight back into it this week, with our College captains and pipe band attending the ANZAC Day service in Bathurst on Monday and all students attending the Junior and Senior School services on each campus this week.

It was wonderful to be able to commemorate the sacrifice of our veterans after being limited the last few years due to Covid-19.

Matilda – the Musical Next week sees the culmination of many weeks and months of rehearsals and planning, as Matilda – the Musical performances begin on the Senior School Campus. After a few years of Covid interruptions, we are fortunate to be able to host our first musical in years.

I’ve been overhearing the beautiful music and singing wafting up from Aikman Hall, and can tell we will be in for a treat.

Covid-19 Restrictions have been eased this week, with NSW Health announcing that close contacts – who have no symptoms – no longer need to isolate if a household member tests positive for Covid-19. If you fall into this category, NSW Health requires you to complete a RAHT each day prior to attending school, let the school know that this is the case and wear a mask if a Senior School student. ANZACS and the Eternal This week, like millions of Australians around the country, the school commemorated ANZAC Day. On Monday, our Pipes and Drums led the March at the Carillion. They were followed by Bathurst school students, including students from our Junior and Senior School. Then on Wednesday, the Senior School held its own ANZAC Service, and the Junior School will follow suit on Friday.

As some of you know, I have always been fascinated with the ANZAC story, particularly with Christian Ministry that occurred within the trenches at Gallipoli.

Many years ago, I did research for a documentary on one of the 'Padres' that served in the trenches, the Salvation Army Chaplain William McKenzie.

As I was reading his diary that was written during the conflict, I stumbled across the story of James MacGreggor, a Private in the 4th Battalion.

MacGreggor had landed at Gallipoli on the first day and had endured the horrors of war for four months. As friends fell during that time, he became increasingly interested in eternal things.

In late July 1915, his mother wrote to him, informing him that she had become a Christian and that since the casualty lists were so high, he too should seek spiritual guidance. So MacGreggor took his mother’s letter, along with a Gospel Tract that explains how to become a Christian to Padre McKenzie. He said to Mckenzie, “I want to become a Christian, but I don’t know how to get there.” McKenzie read John 3:16 to MacGreggor, and later wrote, "amidst the booming guns, James MacGreggor accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour".

A week later, McKenzie wrote that one of the hardest things he ever had to do in the war was to lay MacGreggor’s body to rest after he was killed during the August Offensive at the Battle of Lone Pine.

McKenzie would later write to the founder of the Salvation Army William Booth, about the ministry at Gallipoli: “One is very near to the eternal here. Indeed … one is even treading on the threshold of the eternal world and marching in step with the sinister shadow of death. He has torn a few from my side this week …

Men realise as never before, that the most manly thing to do is to worship and glorify God.” (2nd August 1915) As our lives fly by, may we, too, all realise that we stand on the footsteps of the eternal.

Amen.

EVATT NSW Evatt NSW is the state round of Australia’s premier debating and diplomacy competition.

Evatt is a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition for students in Years 9-12. It aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills.

The competition takes the form of a mock session of the UN Security Council. Teams of two students debate, amend, and vote on a prepared resolution from the perspective of their assigned nation. The students judged the most effective diplomats proceed to the next round.

Welcome to Term 2 We welcome Charlotte Rye, a new student who has joined Kindergarten White, and Felix Betts, who has joined 4G, this week.

Over the holiday break, two of our staff members were blessed with the birth of a child. A big congratulations to Mrs Jenni Molinari, College Psychologist, on the birth of her daughter, Freya, and also to Mrs Liz Tamsitt, Music Teacher, on the birth of her daughter Heidi.

A reminder that students should now be wearing Winter School Uniform. Please see the Campus Handbook on the College website if you need clarification on what is required.

The disco will begin at 5:30 pm for all students. At 6:15 pm, we will have an intermission where the Prep and Kindergarten students will get picked up.

The Year 1 to 6 students will then stay until 7:15 pm.

Children will be provided with a fruit box drink and a snack during the intermission.

Year 6 Camp The Year 6 students will be travelling to Lake Macquarie Crusaders Camp from Wednesday, 11 to Friday, 13 May. This is a fantastic camp experience.

ANZAC Day Service Thank you to all of the students who represented the College at the Bathurst ANZAC Day March on Monday.

This Friday, 29 April, all Junior School students will be taking part in a special ANZAC Day service.

Inter-House Cross Country Carnival The Junior School Inter-House Cross Country Carnival will be on Monday, 2 May. Parents are most welcome to come and cheer on the children. Further details regarding the schedule are in Mr Wilkinson’s report later in this newsletter.

“Matilda” the Musical Our Year 3 to 6 students will be travelling to the Senior Campus next Wednesday, 4 May, to see a preview of the College musical, Matilda.

Preparatory School

NAPLAN Schedule (Year 3 and 5) NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit in May each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students do. As students progress through their school years, it’s important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/ carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time.

If students are absent on testing dates, we will arrange if possible, for the student to complete the missed tests on catch-up days.

Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best. Students in Years 3 and 5 will sit NAPLAN on the following dates: Tuesday, 10 May- Writing Wednesday, 11 May - Reading Friday, 13 May - Language Conventions Monday, 16 May - Numeracy Wednesday, 18 and Friday, 20 May - Catch up days for students who have been absent.

Welcome Back It was great to welcome back our students on Tuesday after a few week's break. We hope that the break was used by both our students and their families for some ‘recharging of the batteries’. Term 2 is shaping up to be a very busy one with the typical busy second half of the semester for assessment tasks as well as loads of events scheduled. We look forward to the musical ‘Matilda’ next week. The cast and staff involved were very busy during the recent break rehearsing and transforming the Aikman Hall. Sydney Royal Easter Show During the last week of Term 1, the Cattle Team represented the College at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The team received some amazing results, which demonstrate the high level of work and dedication that goes into preparing the animals. We congratulate Mrs Dawes, her supporters, and the students in the Cattle Team on their success. Be sure to read all about it in the report that follows and drop in and see the team in action at the Bathurst Show this weekend. I was honoured to join with Hamish, Lauren, and Sophie for the very moving dawn service. Our Collee Captains, Hamish and Lauren, represented the College and laid a wreath to show our respect for those who have and continue to serve our country. It was also very pleasing to see a small number of students represent the College at both the Bathurst and Tottenham ANZAC Day marches and ceremonies. We thank the students who supported this very important day in our national calendar. Rugby Camp The Open Boy’s rugby players had a short rugby camp/ tour to Canberra on the first weekend of the recent holidays. Mr Freeman put together a fully packed program for the boys and was ably assisted by Mr Bailey. The reports received by all were that the camp/ tour was very rewarding and successful and should help prepare the players for an anticipated good season ahead. Again, we thank Mr Freeman for his leadership and outstanding organisation of the rugby program and also thank Mr Bailey for giving up a lot of his time to work and coach the boys.

New work on campus Over the recent holiday period, the Senior Campus was again a very busy place for tradesmen and our maintenance team.

New work was done in the car park area with an improved gutter and surface for vehicles entering the carpark.

pickup/drop off area were added. We encourage drivers picking up or dropping off to park as far along the pickup/ drop off zone as they can so to allow for the maximum number of cars to use the zone at once. We also had some more footpaths installed behind the HSIE block and at the entrance to the Stage 4 Hub boys’ locker room.

Some other major work done during the break included the installation of lights for the Equestrian Centre and the resurfacing of the Hunter Sports Centre floor. We know that the students will benefit greatly from these installations.

Winter Season Our Winter season kicks off in full this weekend. The weather forecast looks a little spooky for Saturday, so please keep an eye on your local association’s Facebook page for any weather updates. I’ll also be posting any updates on the SASC Facebook page.

A reminder to all families to make sure your child is registered prior to playing this Winter season. Having your child correctly registered will ensure they’re insured in the event of an injury.

Junior School Cross Country Our Junior School Cross Country Carnival is happening next Monday at the Junior Campus.

The carnival will start at 11:30 am on Watson Oval.

Parents, families and cheer squads are all welcome to attend. If you plan on coming along, please use the shiny new car park inside the school grounds alongside Eglinton Road.

Students are required to wear their Winter Sports uniform to school and are welcome to compete in their House polo and College shorts. We recommend students wear shorts under their College track pants, so they’re prepared for all weather conditions.

If, in exceptional circumstances, the carnival needs to be cancelled, it will be done so on the morning of the event. We’ll notify families via Operoo and the SASC Facebook page of any changes.

HICES Netball Throw Vesper Pearce a high five next time you see her. On the last day of Term 1, Vesper was selected in the HICES netball team for the second consecutive year. Vesper will now go on to represent HICES (and Scots All Saints, of course) at the upcoming CIS Netball Championship. Woo hoo!

CIS Swimming Good luck to Nikki Browne, Ruby Thorne, Milla Nelson, Emily Saint, Seona Chapman, Harry Thorne, Poppy Hobson, Georgina Hewitt and Lillian Millgate, who will take to the pool on Monday and Tuesday at the CIS Swimming Championships at Homebush.

Sydney Royal Easter Show WHAT A SHOW! The Scots All Saints Cattle Show Team exhibited 25 steers at Sydney Royal Easter Show. Four of these steers were home bred whilst the remaining steers were bred by our amazing supportive stud breeders from all over the state.

The team took 15 purebred Limousin steers, 3 purebred Angus Steers, three purebred Charolais Steers and then two Limousin cross Square Meater heifers, one Limousin cross Square Meater Steer and one Limousin cross Murray Grey Steer. The students prepared these animals, which began during Term 3, 2021, but this was challenging due to Covid. The team was capably led by Charlotte Lindsay, Harriett Mitchell, Clare Mawhood, Kirilee Scott, Lillian Oke, Gabrielle Toby and Amabella Harvey, who are our Year 12 team members. We were also led by our wonderful ‘red shirters’ who hold a leadership position in the team, and this included Eva Green, Hannah Gill, Victoria Webb and Oliviah Grimshaw.

After one of the best shows we had ever had in 2020, we are just as amazed this year as we had a terrific show with fabulous results. A summary of the results are as follows: • Champion Open Lightweight Purebred Steer – a Limousin steer paraded by Paige Hatton and bred

Stanhill Trophy classes – these are interbreed classes where the top three animals are selected for each breed to represent the breed in the carcase classes as a group. o Limousin Team - With over 65 Limousin steers, all three selected for the team were SASC animals. One of the animals was a steer bred by Leigh Scott and prepared by Kirilee Scott, another was a steer bred by Phil Kirk, Wilworril Limosuins, Peak Hill and prepared by Hannah Gill and Harrison Croker, and the final animal was a steer bred by Hayden and Jasmine Green, Summit Livestock, Uranquinty and prepared by Olivia Pitt and Amelia Triggs.

We also won the ‘viewers choice’, which was an animal prepared by Charlotte Lindsay and Fraser Gill. o Angus Team – again we had two animals selected – both bred by the Mawhood family, with one prepared by Amabella Harvey and the other by Clare Mawhood and Teagan Chapman.

enough – they are a credit to themselves, their parents and the school and should be an inspiration and role model to all!!

• To our wonderful school farmhand, Mr Bruce Inwood, his work behind the scenes is so greatly appreciated, the care he takes for the animals is absolutely fabulous, and we couldn’t do what we do without him.

• Our cattle producers, who entrust us with their superior genetics – Summit Livestock (Hayden and Jasmine Green) from Uranquinty, Leigh and Lynda Scott from Meadowflat, Phil Kirk from Wilworril Limousins, Peak Hill and The Mawhood Family, Sunnypoint Meats, Oberon all supplied us with quality steers. This year we were proud to exhibit five ‘home grown’ Limousin and Limousin Square Meater cross animals.

Junior Judges We had some of our students qualify for state and national finals in various junior judging competitions.

Lily Moore competed in Poultry, Fruit and Vegetable, Grains, Merino Sheep, Merino Fleeces and Meat sheep Judging. To qualify for all of these is an achievement in itself.

From the All Saints' College archives

THE ANZAC STORY- SAINTS WHO SERVED

We have here in our archives a collection of personal dossiers of the Saints Who Served in the Great War researched and compiled by a respected Old Bathurstian and Historian, Tony Cable (1953-1959).

Tony completed the collection after six years of painstaking research into the lives of the many All Saints’ Old Bathurstians who served the country in the Great War. These personal dossiers of Saints’ Old Boy Soldiers are an important asset for the school and is used as teaching resources in History classes for current and future students.

As well as being of historical value, there are many students, past and present, who are relatives of these brave men who served, and they are Junior School Campus Preparatory School, Junior (Years K–6) 70 Eglinton Road BATHURST NSW 2795

encouraged to read their ancestor's personal stories. These personal dossiers of each man have been brought to life by Tony with selections from the soldier’s Personal Service Records from the National Archives and newspaper clippings, casualty, and Red Cross reports. In addition, Tony has incorporated copies of original documents, including diaries, poignant battlefront letters and original poems in the dossiers. Each story is presented in a scrapbook style that will allow the reader to scroll through original documents, which can be quite confronting and sad. Among these ‘real’ stories of the war include a report of a wounded soldier shooting himself to avoid being taken prisoner by the

Germans. Another is of a soldier who was evacuated a few days after the Gallipoli landing with a ‘nervous breakdown’ being sent home under a cloud. Yet another account features a Secret Service mission to the Far East in 1917 undertaken at the request of the Australian Prime Minister in order to investigate future possible Japanese intentions in the region.

The Old Bathurstians’ and members of the new school, Scots All Saints College, are extremely grateful to Tony for his work to honour the memory of these All Saints’ Old Boys in this collection The Anzac Project of Saints Who Served in the Great War.
