As the term draws to a close, we have much to be thankful for.

Our community continues to remain COVID-19 free, restrictions are now minimal and life is largely normalized. We must, of course, remain vigilant and continue to follow the all-important hygiene protocols.

It has been an excellent start to the New Year and hopefully it will continue to be positive.

The term break begins on Thursday, 1 April 2021, with the traditional Easter celebration starting on Good Friday.

Across the College we have been remembering and celebrating the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ and reflecting on the impact this has had and continues to have on individuals and indeed our world.

Open's Cricket Final Last Saturday the Open’s cricket team played their grand final against the ORC cricket team. The two teams finished in first and second place in the regular season but could not play against one another because of inclement weather. This led a match full of anticipation with both teams wanting to win and show their superiority in the local competition.

Captain Thomas Siede won the toss and decided to bowl given the greenness of the pitch and the recent heavy rainfall. The decision paid dividends with the ORC batting line up struggling to score consistently against the accurate and well drilled SASC bowlers. Multiple wicket takers for our team were Samuel Lloyd (4) and Jonah Siede (2) although all of our bowlers bowled economically to restrict ORC to a modest total of 78 runs. Angus Rendall led the way in the field as wicket keeper, taking three catches and a run out. Whilst the total was not a large one, chasing runs n a grand final is always difficult and the ORC bowlers made life difficult for the SASC batsmen. Fortunately, Thomas Siede played a strong and decisive captain’s innings and led the team to victory with the assistance of Hamish Siegert (9 runs) and Jonah Siede (19 not out) with only two wickets down.

The victory was the culmination of many hours of practice for the boys in the team.

It was also a fitting way for the team to farewell our departing Year 12 players which included Robert Jeffries, Max Corbett, Jonah Siede, Thomas Siede, Angus Rendall and Samuel Lloyd. Congratulations to all of the team who represented the College with distinction throughout the season. I would also like to acknowledge the large number of parents who supported the boys throughout the season.

Tyler selected in Under 19's Australian cycling team Last week Tyler Puzicha (Year 11) competed in the Under 19's elite Australian Track Championships in Brisbane.

Day 1 saw Tyler and her two team mates win gold and set a new Australian record in the Under 19 women's team sprint.

On day 2 Tyler scored a personal best, winning the Bronze medal in the 500 time trial - only missing silver by 0.01 seconds.

Tyler also won a bronze medal in the 4km team pursuit. For her efforts Tyler has been selected for the Under 19's Australian team for the world championship training camp in Adelaide next month.

Grand final victory for Under 15s cricket team On Saturday, 27 March, the U15s cricket team played the Grand Final as Minor Premiers against Rugby Union Cricket club, who had beaten us narrowly during the regular season.

Unable to win the toss yet again, we fielded first and sought to put early pressure on the opposition. The boys bowled exceptionally well and contained the opposition to 5 for 74 after 24 overs. Hugh was the top bowler with 2 for 11.

In reply, Lewis and Josh set the foundation for the winning run chase, with a 40 run partnership. Josh ended up being the top scorer for the match with 25, with the team scoring 4 for 80 with four overs to spare.

Congratulations to the boys on a great season and for playing their best game in the Grand Final. Just as importantly, congratulations for being gentlemen on the field - they are excellent ambassadors for the College!

Easter Service Our Junior School students celebrated the message of Easter at a lovely Easter Service on Wednesday afternoon prior to the Easter Hat Parade. Year 4 did a super job presenting the resurrection story whilst a member from each class brought forward a symbol of Easter to remind us of some of the key events that took place. Some of our Year 4 students delivered a beautiful song titled Jesus Messiah which reminded us of how amazing Jesus’ love for each of us is.

Hat Parade and Art Exhibition Following the Easter Service, we celebrated the end of the term with a spectacular Easter Hat Parade. There were some unbelievable hats on display and I must say a big thank you to all our parents and friends who assisted in putting some of the hats together. Year 4 got us started as we worked our way down to the Prep classes. The students enjoyed showcasing their hats and waving to their parents and friends.

At the conclusion of the Easter Hat Parade it was lovely to see so many happy children showing off some of their work in Visual Arts at our Art Exhibition in the Kemmis Building. The children were all very proud of their work!

Kindergarten enjoyed their trip to the College Farm on Monday. Mr Meek showed the students many of the tools that are used on the farm and students even climbed up into the tractor. Some Year 9 students came and helped Kinder weigh the sheep as Mr Meek taught the students about what we can do with many of the things that we grow and raise on farms.

On Tuesday, Stage 1 students travelled to the Huntley Berry Farm to learn all about where our food comes from. Students were very excited to pick lots of tomatoes, capsicums and squashes which were ready for picking. Unfortunately, we just missed out on picking berries but a tractor ride and meeting some of the local farm animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and baby blue tongues lizards was a real highlight. continued page 5

Winter Sport Season Winter sport will begin at the start of Term 2 with training during Active Afternoons on Thursdays after lunch.

The students have been working on the Achieve Wellness program, which is a part of the whole school program that informs, supports, and nurtures the student’s sense of self and helps maximize their participation and achievement levels both in school and life. This term Year 7 has been exploring ‘Good character traits’, ‘What are the different types of friends’, ‘How to start meaningful conversations’, and ‘Handling Peer Pressure’ in a positive way. In all these sessions, explore these topics in a safe environment.

Have A safe break Mr Christopher Walsh, Stage 4 Team Leader Last week Year 8 enjoyed the privilege of a visit by the Consul General of the Canadian Embassy and learning about the importance of learning French as a second language through the entertaining, interactive performance of Sean Murphy in ‘Tigidou’ (G’day for those who live in Quebec). This humorous and engaging presentation revealed that French Culture and Language is alive and thriving far beyond the bounds of Europe.

As part of the Achieve program this term, Year 8 students have been learning about the real meaning of success, the importance of having a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset and the five keys to success: Confidence, Organisation, Persistence, Resilience and Getting Along.

The important message for all students is that change is possible and that each individual has the power to achieve growth and to unlock those possibilities through self-belief.

Stage 4 This has been a busy term for all, and with these final days both teachers and students have been putting the final finishes on their units of work. During the term, the Year 7 has had a lot of opportunities to be part of the Scots All Saint school culture. This has included a visit from the Consul General of the Canadian Embassy and the Digital thumbprint group

The Term 1 break is always a welcome one for the students with the many joys of Easter to celebrate the end of a busy term. The students have worked really well right up to the last day and I’m sure they welcomed the final bell yesterday.

Individual opportunities to excel have been showcased in the past fortnight. The cross-country was a good example. As the students made their way around the course, it was inspiring to see those who seemed to glide around the course effortlessly.

What I was really encouraged by was those who didn’t quite have the natural ability but kept running, refusing to walk despite the wet and heavy conditions, yet achieving the personal goals they set.

Another opportunity to excel was in the da Vinci Decathlon. All students from Years 9-11 were invited to take part and those who accepted the challenge competed in a team of eight across ten academic events against other schools from the Central West.

I congratulate all those who competed as I know they walked away from the competition with enhanced skills in communicating, thinking creatively and critically and problem solving. It would be great to see even more teams from the College next year.

In the following paragraphs you will notice that the Team Leaders have written information that pertains to their year groups. This will now become a regular feature in The Roar.

I wish everyone all the best for a blessed Easter and I look forward to the start of what will be another terrific term.

Stage 5 Term 1 It is hard to believe that 10 weeks have gone since the start of the school year. With most days full of activity, it seems like only yesterday when Year 9 first arrived at Campus East (Scots) and the commencement assembly kicked off the year. Stage 5 has had many new programs introduced this year.

The most notable being the Invictus program run by Mr Tom van Gend focusing on building skills to form meaningful relationships with others. Unfortunately, the Year 10 Network Games were postponed until Week 1 in Term 2 due to bad weather, however I am sure this event will be a highlight of next term. Year 9 also have had the introduction of LEAP. Learning, Enhancement, Adjunct Program run by Ms Tracey Leaf and Ms Cate Mitchell focusing on student’s literacy and study skills.

Congratulations to members of the cattle team and Agriculture program who represented the College at Blayney Show and currently at Sydney Royal Show in both junior judging competitions, sheep and cattle showing. The commitment that these students display to this program is highly commendable.

Many students have taken part in the summer core sports of basketball, touch football and cricket.

Congratulations to the teams that improved throughout the season and made various finals. There have also been many other sports events. The Inter House swimming and cross-country carnivals were held this term.

Music is another area of school where Stage 5 excel, with many students being part of various ensembles.

The Battle of the Band was a fantastic event run by the Year 12s, which showcased the many talents of these students.

We look forward to seeing Year 9 and 10 back after a well-earned break, along with a handful of new students, whom we are sure will be welcomed by our wonderful group of students.

Mrs Cassandra Pearce, Stage 5 Team Leader Stage 6 Stage 6 has started the year strong and settled quickly into the demands of senior study. Year 11 and 12 students have already experienced varied learning opportunities this term both on and off campus. Our TAFE and Distance Education students are coping well with the need to be highly organised and selfmonitored, all great skills to be developing for post school life.

Our weekly team meetings have been well received by the student cohort, and this time has been spent on building a strong sense of team and purpose. continued page 9

The students are now driving these meetings and will work in social learning groups starting in Term 2, these have been organised with the assistance of our Academic Prefects. We are working with the students to develop a better plan for the Year 12 common room that meets to needs for all.

The Year 11 STEM class demonstrated the solar gathering power of parabolic mirrors recently when they used them to cook sausages. With the addition of some bread and tomato sauce, they were eaten for lunch.

Our office is centrally located and very accessible to all our senior students. It is well patronised, with students dropping in daily to say hi, pick up a form or just have a chat. Term 1 study break student planners have been made available to all students, and it is pleasing to see how they have taken the opportunity to collect one and be organised for the holidays. ROAR Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Wellbeing Whiparound As the whirlwind that has been Term 1 draws to a close I would like to use my final article of the term to summarise the topics and work that students in Stages 1 to 5 have been involved in as part of the various wellbeing programs throughout the College.

Students in K–6 are working with Bounce Back! - a multiple award-winning positive education approach to wellbeing, resilience and social-emotional learning for primary school children. Teachers will participate in online professional development next term in order to enhance their skills in presenting the program.

Kindergarten have learned about personal strengths and how people grow. They have learnt to recognise and distinguish emotions, how to respond in different situations, as well as strategies to help them interact positively with others. Students have focused on values such as honesty and kindness.

Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) has also explored a range of values including being fair and responsible and why it is important to be kind. Working together as a team and co-operation has also been important.

Kindness has also been a focus in Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) with a focus on being friendly to and including others.

Students have explored positive thinking as opposed to unhelpful thinking in order to appreciate that sometimes bad things will happen in life but that bad times won’t last forever.

Stage 3 students have worked through various topics. In ‘Being Fair’ they addressed the questions: what is fair and does equal treatment equal fairness? In ‘It’s ok to be different’ the students considered how they differ from one another and the meaning and impact of prejudice and discrimination. ‘Friendliness and including others’ is a unit that looked at who we include in our friendship groups

and how positivity can lead to friendships and inclusion. ‘Selfrespect and treat others with respect’ had a focus on liking and accepting yourself and being proud of your actions when you treat others respectfully. The final unit for the term was based on bouncing back from difficult situations through understanding that bad times don’t last forever and that leaning on others for support through difficult times helps us to cope.

Stage 4 students are working within Program Achieve Secondary, recently recognised as best practice by Beyond Blue – Be You. Given that the commencement of Year 7 has brought a large number of new students to the College, Year 7 have spent Term 1 within the Relationships section of the program in which they have looked at character strengths as well as skills that enable them to get along with others. The Achievement section of the program has given Year 8 students the opportunity to develop a growth mindset, work with confidence and persistence.

Stage 5 students have commenced the Invictus Wellbeing Program, which has been introduced into the College this year for the first time. Delivering the program to all students in Years 9 and 10 has provided me the opportunity to get to know all of the students. I have been gratified by the positive way in which students have engaged with the activities this term.

Year 9 are halfway through the Network element and will continue this focus in Term 2. Year 10 have completed the Network element and will move on to a new topic next term. It was disappointing that we had to postpone the Year 10 Network Games Event, but we are looking forward to staging the event on the Wednesday 21 April (the first week back). It is very pleasing that a number of students within the stage are working towards the voluntary Network Award by completing various challenges outside of class time. Year 10 students will need to complete the sign-off process for challenges by the end of Week 1 next term to be eligible for the award.

From the archives

The All Saints' College Chapel At the first service following the Dedication of the School Chapel in October 1910, Reverend Canon Thompson, the first school Chaplain addressed the school congregation with, “True education does not consist of filling the mind with matter, but in turning the eye of the soul towards the light…..Here you will learn the true proportion of things….. here you will learn something of the sacredness and possibilities of life….The supreme end of knowledge is to find and know God.” Thus the Chapel started its life and there began things which continued ever since. From the outset the Chapel was used daily and successive Heads of College have joined successive chaplains in the conduct of worship.

Records of the Chapel’s early days show long lists of money contributions and gifts which came from the Old Boys and others of the school family all making the building possible.

As one student wrote in The Bathurstian of June 1908, “A school Chapel is the centre of the school life. In its services all the united efforts of masters and boys in the classroom and the playground are consecrated to the highest service. As the roof completes the building; as the spire puts the finishing touches to the architectural excellence to the fabric of the churchso the chapel completes the beauty, excellence and utility of school work and sport.”

The first chapel building was constructed up on the northern hill overlooking the city of Bathurst (now the Bathurst High School location) and was used with services every day until 1919, when the school closed and the buildings were purchased by the Education Department.

When the College was moved to its present site in 1923, it meant it had no chapel and the boarders had to walk to the All Saints’ Cathedral every Sunday. An appeal to the Old Boys pleads the case and determined to remedy the situation Bishop Long persuaded the Education Department to permit the Church with money from the Old Boys to remove the Chapel brick by brick for its rebuilding. In July 1924 the Chapel was rebuilt at a cost of £475, where it stands today.

Thus began stage two of the Chapel’s life. To recount all

that has happened by way of experiments in worship and in teaching; to comment upon the great occasions - the confirmations, the baptisms, the weddings, the visits of distinguished guests, the changing patterns of services; introduction of modern tunes for the hymns; provision of new furnishings, vestry shelves, memorial windows, books, and every other piece which makes the history of this building would take more than a thousand words and still not be complete. To write of the work of the twenty-seven chaplains who have served here and of their several contributions to the life of the College would be a vital part of the history of the Chapel as each one in his own way has tried, under God, to preach the same gospel and to impress upon the boys and girls the ‘duties which belong to those who have made the Christian commitment’. Much has been written on the Chapel and as Reverend Paul Woodhart, the last All Saints’ chaplain wrote ‘the Chapel has a prominent place in the grounds and life of the College. Returning students tell of many Chapel memories and the words from an old hymn: “We love the place O God”…. begin to describe the affection.’

Many well-known artists and photographers have captured images of the Chapel and some of these artworks can be seen in various locations. Also, there is a tapestry of the Chapel which was created by a member of the school family and copies of the same were sold to interested people.

Central West da Vinci Decathlon Scots All Saints College hosted the Central West da Vinci Decathlon last week in a wonderful three days of academic challenge and collaboration. The Decathlon is a team’s event with 8 students in each team working together to solve a broad range of academic problems across a variety of subject areas.

Traditional subjects such as English, science and Mathematics are part of the Decathlon but they are also supplemented with other disciplines including Engineering, Creative Producers and Code Breakers.

The level of difficulty is extremely high and students are certainly challenged to draw on their problem solving and higher order thinking skills. The three days were a great success with the students enjoying the ability to work collaboratively, mix with students from other schools and also challenge themselves academically. Congratulations to the winning teams in their respective divisions: Year 5 - Macquarie Anglican Grammar School Year 6 - Blue Mountains Grammar School Year 7 - Scots All Saints College/Kinross Wolaroi School Year 8 - Kinross Wolaroi School Year 9 - Central West Leadership Academy Year 10 - Kinross Wolaroi School

As Host School (and winners in Years 7 and 11) some of our students will have the opportunity to represent the College in the State da Vinci Decathlon in early Term 2.

This would normally involve a trip to Knox Grammar School in Sydney but the current COVID-19 restrictions have meant that the event will be a virtual competition.

Congratulations to all of the students who will continue to represent the College at this next level.

I would like to commend all of the students for the way in which they represented the College in the Decathlon, and I would also like to thank all of the staff who assisted in the organisation and running of the event.

Big Band entertains crowd at Town Square The Big Band played their first gig in a year in the Town Square as part of the Bathurst Council’s Live Music events. The band entertained the crowds and passers by for an hour and then two of our contemporary rock bands rocked the Carillion.

Congrats to staff and students on a great term of work and a quality gig.

Students enjoy CRU Group activities on both campuses It is always a pleasure for me to visit Scots All Saints College. No more than last week where it was so encouraging to see over 100 students across the College having such a great time at the CRU Groups.

On Thursday lunchtime Mrs Jennie White had over 40 students in the Junior School singing, playing fun games and learning how much God loves them. Several students told me on the way out how the CRU Group is their favourite thing at school.

Then on Friday morning Mrs Amelia Jurd led the Senior School CRU Group and we had a great discussion on what ‘grace’ means. There were several students that mentioned how helpful they found the discussion and are keen to attend a CRU Camp in the school holidays. I was so encouraged to see several new students there, as well as a few that have been attending since they were in the Junior School 10 years ago.

Also, on Friday Mr Jon Clipsham ran an amazing Middle School CRU for around 45 very excited students who had so much fun with chocolate challenges, leading into Easter, and heard a short talk about how Jesus accepts everyone and is ‘living water’ offering eternal life.

These teachers give up their time and do a wonderful job each week and it was very evident how much all the students appreciate their efforts.

A special shout-out to Mrs Jennie White who has led the CRU Group in the Junior School for 20 years and Jon Clipsham who has led the CRU Group in the Senior and now Middle School for 10 years. It was also lovely to meet other staff members who attended the groups last week.

Speech & Drama Term 1 news It has been a wonderful term of Speech & Drama lessons at Scots All Saints College. The students in Prep have been busy progressing their articulation and clarity and learning many new dramatic skills and techniques. The Junior and Middle school students have been working hard all term on their Eisteddfod items and busily preparing for their IMEB examinations to be held later in the year.

Rugby Report

SASC Opens V St Stanislaus College 3rd XV On Saturday Scots All Saints College took part in our first trial match of the year with a large group of 33 boys. It has been a long wait for many boys just to step foot again on a rugby field after no matches were played in 2020.

We played the match in quarters to give both sides time to talk with the boys, give them a short rest and allow our side to make positional changes so all players could get some playing time. The boys were excited but nervous.

This was clear from the kickoff as the Stannies side quickly got into the game and pushed the pace. Our boys were in a bit of disarray and were losing track of their positional play. The early lack of structure cost us as Stannies came out with three quick tries from two breakaway runs and an interception. We found ourselves down 17 to nil after the first quarter. In the second quarter we gained some confidence and we worked hard for two tries of our own but eventually allowing Stannies one more before the half. In the third quarter the boys raised their competitive level and they kept themselves in the fight with some strong defense only allowing Stannies one try which proved to be their last try of the game. In the fourth quarter we kept working hard and progressed well as we starting working as a team, we kept getting better and better and we found some continuity in the final 10 minutes where we were able to score two more tries. A fantastic effort by all the boys.

Final Score: SASC 22 V SSC 29 Best Performances: Darnell Polsen, Otto Kuhn, Charlie Harris, Jack Van Yzendoorn, and Riley Monico.
