There was a real buzz at the Rugby Trials held on the Scots Campus Main Oval last Saturday. There was a good crowd in attendance for the games against St Stanislaus College and the boys played quite well in their new combinations. All this augurs well for the coming season. There is a real sense of expectation in the rugby ranks for the new competitiveness that the merged college will provide. The first ISA home game will be against Blue Mountains Grammar on Saturday 4 May at Scots Campus. I hope to see a big crowd for this important fixture.

Most students were very well presented last Saturday in formal uniform; this is the requirement for all students at rugby fixtures unless they are on the way to or from another sporting fixture such as netball or hockey.

If this is the case, then they are required to be in full College track suit. It is important that uniform standards are improved upon next term. I will be policing this at the next home game and the expectation will be that all students are wearing their uniform with pride.

The College Cattle Team has a big week at The Royal Sydney Show from Tuesday through to Sunday. This is the highlight of the year for members of the Cattle Team as they have been preparing the steers since September. The students who have been involved in the Cattle Team over the last two terms have developed a whole range of personal skills through this program. Mrs Dawes provides an exceptional educational program which is unique in its format. Our outstanding success at Sydney Royal over the last seven years is testament to her commitment and expertise and the leadership and support provided by senior students and parents. As always, I am looking forward to joining them for the main judging day on Friday. I wish them all well for their big week.

I enjoyed being a part of the Lithgow Campus end of term Chapel Service and Easter Hat Parade this week. The children did extremely well with their singing, reading of the Easter message and enjoyed parading the Easter Hats they had made. It was good to welcome parents and relatives for this special occasion.

You are the reason Jesus came, lived, died and rose from the grave. He paid for your sin through His own death.

He knows you intimately and wants you to know him – the one who died so you could live forever with Him. Jesus is alive and he’s promised to return. His resurrection means death has been defeated. His promise to return means one day we will all meet Him. On that day He will either be the Master we have served or the Master we have rejected. We hear a lot about Jesus dying for the whole world, and we know that we are included in the whole world part. But did you know that Jesus died just for you?

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the LORD Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6He is not here; he has risen!

Inspirational visit from Water Polo ex-Olympian Dual Olympic Water Polo superstar Nikita Williams provided an inspirational talk to Junior and Middle School students at our assembly recently.

Language Club – a new opportunity for 2019 Language Club is for students who wish to gain confidence in their speaking skills and expand their knowledge and understanding in their chosen culture, either Japanese or French.

It is also an opportunity for students to interact with their teacher and to converse in an authentic environment.

The themes covered will vary depending on the students’ interests and abilities and the course work being covered in their classes at school.

A wide selection of games (both indoor and outdoor), songs, role-play and drama will be used to promote the development of good pronunciation and to learn a wide range of vocabulary and phrases.

Educational DVDs and CDs are also used for the children to hear and see authentic speakers and to become aware of the cultural differences and similarities.

Team building activities will be a strong feature of our club with the use of board games, whiteboard games and quizzes.

Books are not required as students will be given activity sheets regularly to reinforce subjects covered during the sessions.

Breahna Burgess wins her way to the Nationals While most are still in bed, Year 9 student Breahna Burgess is in the pool training in the early hours of the morning for the upcoming Swimming Australia 2019 - Nationals to be held from 15-21 April in Adelaide, South Australia.

Breahna’s dedication to her sport sees her swim nine sessions per week, each averaging 4km as well as an additional two strength and conditioning sessions.

This is a remarkable commitment that has led to great achievement. Breahna will be competing in 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, 200m breaststroke. We wish Breahna every success as she does herself, her family and our College proud.

CRAZY SOCK DAY

Term One It’s hard to believe we are at the end of Term One. I’d like to acknowledge all of the students who have settled in quite well to the new school. For some it has been quite a straightforward transition whilst for others it has required perseverance and time. The same could be said for us as staff and parents as well.

Whilst the term has had some challenges overall I am very happy with the way we are moving forward.

There have been many highlights and I’m sure that as the year goes on things will become more familiar to us all as we build our united identity.

Crazy Sock Day for Masila It was great to see so many students wearing their crazy socks on Monday to support our sponsor child Masila. Students raised $204 for this wonderful cause.

Masila is a young boy who has been our school sponsor child for the past 4 years.

He lives in Kenya and attends the Makindu Hope Academy. Project Hope is a locally run charity and was set up by Carla Robinson who lives in Bathurst and travels to the school each year. All of the money our students raise goes directly to the schooling and immediate needs of Masila and his family. Thank you to everyone for your help.

Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the parent teacher interviews. It is always a great opportunity to pause and discuss your child’s progress and set some goals for the rest of the year.

Easter Service and Art Exhibition By the time you’re reading this, the term will have come to an end and we will have celebrated with a variety of events including the Easter Service, Hat Parade and Visual Arts Exhibition. The students did a wonderful job leading the service and were very excited to showcase their learning in Visual Arts. What a great way to finish the term!

Mrs Porter I notified Year One Panda parents last week about Mrs Porter’s decision to step down from her position as classroom teacher. Mrs Porter taught at All Saints’ College from 2005 until the end of 2018 and commenced this year in our inaugural year as Scots All Saints College Year 1 Panda’s Classroom Teacher. Mrs Porter has given outstanding service to the school and has displayed great enthusiasm and organisational skills in leading the learning of our younger students.

Mrs Porter will be replaced in Term 2 by two very experienced teachers in Mrs Jodie Shurmer and Mrs Frances Duffy. Mrs Shurmer will teach the class on Monday and Tuesday whilst Mrs Duffy will teach the class from Wednesday to Friday. Both these teachers have a long association with the school and Mrs Duffy is noted for her expertise in THRASS and early literacy.

Year 4 Leadership Our Year 4 leaders visited classrooms this week to gain some feedback from students on how the year is progressing so far. These Student Leadership Council Meetings will be held twice a term and give us great insight into how the students perceive things to be going and their hopes for the future of our school. Each of our Year 4 students have been assigned to one of the following areas; Learning, Health and Wellbeing, Environment and Sport.

Upon returning from their meeting the Year 4 students met with Miss Gillespie, Mrs Arthurs and myself and it was great to hear so many positive things happening in our school. Students were asked to reflect on how students were working. Responses included; positively, together, kindly, listening well, working hard and showing improvement. Students were also asked what students do when they are working well. Responses included saying nice things to one another, listening and concentrating, working quietly and on task and helping one another. In addition, lots of great ideas were suggested as we look to the future and build this great school. Well done Year 4!

ANZAC Day Scots All Saints College will be participating in the ANZAC Day parade this year. If you are able to attend ANZAC Day, please meet at the front of the RSL Club at 10:00 am in full Winter Uniform to march.

Junior School full Winter Uniform: Boys in long trousers, tie and jumper. Girls in pinafore, navy tights and jumper with hair neatly tied back with a red, blue or navy ribbon and formal hat.

K - Year 2 children may be collected from Kings Parade immediately after the march. Years 3 - 8 children may be collected after the service.

Cross Country The Pre-Kindergarten – Year 6 Cross Country carnival will be held on Tuesday 30 April. Students should arrive to school in their sports uniform including their House shirt (with the exception of Pre-Kindergarten students who will arrive in their normal uniform).

The format for the carnival is as follows: 10:30 am Pre-Kindergarten 11:00 am Students K-Year 6 arrive

11:10 am Kindergarten 11:20 am Year 1 11:30 am Year 2 class race (short course – 1km) 11:40 am 8/9 Years 2km 11:55 am 10 Years 2km 12:10 pm 11 Years 3km 12:30 pm 12 Years 3km Times are approximate.

Students in Year 2 can choose to run in the Year 2 class race (approximately 1km) OR in the competitive 8/9 Years race. Only students in the 8/9 Years competitive race can be considered for the Cross Country team.

The first five students in each age group will be selected in the Scots All Saints College Cross Country team. The exception to this is the 12 Years age group, where six students will be considered.

Soloists’ Recital - Junior School As part of Scots All Saints College’s annual music calendar, students are invited to perform in the Junior School Soloists’ Recital. All students, especially those who have individual music lessons, are strongly encouraged to take up this excellent opportunity to perform for their peers, family, teachers and friends.

The concert will be held in the Performance Room at the Music Centre from 4:00 pm Tuesday 7 May 2019.

Any student wishing to perform should complete the form emailed earlier this week.

Mother’s Day Morning Tea I’d like to invite all our mothers and grandmothers to a special Mother’s Day Morning Tea on Thursday 9 May. Building a Collaborative Learning Community At Scots All Saints College we are blessed to have such a collaborative learning community where students and staff see the value of teamwork.

Any CEO of a successful organisation will tell you that being able to collaborate and work as part of a team is an essential attribute for employees. There are numerous opportunities for our students to develop their team work skills and we see providing these opportunities as one of our core roles.

Recently we entered teams of Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students in the da Vinci Decathlon. Scots All Saints College hosted the very first da Vinci Decathlon held in the Central West and it was a resounding success. Students were required to solve problems in teams that involved a lot of creative thinking. It demonstrated that we all have different character strengths but as a team we can solve anything.

Debating is more about the team than it is about each individual speaker.

The lessons learnt participating in events such as this are valuable for life.

Probably the best example of a group of people working together to achieve a common goal was the wonderful school musical at BMEC, Beauty and the Beast. This encompassed actors, musicians, tech crew and stage hands who all had to collaborate and what a fantastic job they did.

If all members of our learning community work together we can achieve anything. I look forward to many more achievements by our talented students in Term 2.

Sport, especially team sport provides another opportunity for students to realise the strength of working collaboratively to solve a problem. It does not matter whether it is hockey, rugby, netball, touch football, football, basketball or cricket, every team sport has the same end goal, to work together to produce the best possible performance.

Our debating teams regularly compete against other HICES schools and realise that without teamwork and collaboration they have no chance of being successful in their competition.

Senior School Mrs Tracey Leaf Head of Scots Campus/Director of Senior School & Boarding

Term 1 is usually busy and as an inaugural term I think ours was fabulous! During Tuesday’s assembly we attempted to list all the activities that have occurred during this term. What was very evident is that we’ve had a rather busy term but most importantly, a fulfilling one. My thanks to the staff and students for their hard work on all the activities; your commitment to building community and culture is appreciated.

Positive relationships with parents are important as we partner together in the education of your children. On behalf of the staff I would like to express our gratitude to the parents who have supported us throughout this term. Your efforts in the various fundraising activities, encouraging messages and friendly waves are appreciated. We look forward to continuing the good work of building our new College with you.

As we wrap up and head off into the holiday break, I wish everyone safe travels and a happy, restful time. I know our Boarders are particularly keen to get home to see family, friends and pets.

I believe that our Year 11 and 12 students will spend some of their holiday break studying but I would also encourage our seniors to ensure they have a break; take a walk, go for a run, watch a movie, hang out with your parents, read a book not on your HSC list!

We will look forward to seeing our Boarders return on Sunday 28 April (from 2:00 pm) and all students in class Monday 29 April.

Students participate in Brain Bee Challenge Fourteen Year 10 students participated in the annual Brain Bee Challenge, a global neuroscience competition for students in Year 10.

I would like to congratulate all the students for their efforts. Students learnt about the brain and its functions, neuroscience research, careers in neuroscience and were able to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. Students who score highly in the first round of the quiz are invited to progress to the NSW State Finals.

This involves a full day of activities at the School of Medical Sciences, University of NSW. This includes an interactive physiology workshop, a guided human anatomy tour of the Museum of Human Diseases and a series of presentations from doctoral students.

ANZAC Day Parade – Cadets We hope to have a strong contingent of the Scots All Saints Cadet Unit march in the Bathurst ANZAC Day Parade.

Students marching need to wear their Cadet Cams (pants and shirts). No undergarments are allowed to be seen under the button up shirt. Cadets will be issued with a beret and black webbing belt with brass fasteners. Unfortunately, if it is really cold students will have to persevere with these uniform items only but may bring a jumper or jacket to wear to and from the parade.

Cadets are asked to assemble together on Rankin Street in front of the RSL or Police Station at 9:45 am. The parade starts marching at 10:15 am.

We need to issue students with the extra uniform items (above) before the end of term, however, we will be assembling at the Senior Campus Q Store (back of Karralee) at 8:30 am on ANZAC Day to collect flags and issue any last minute uniform items or make adjustments. A small bus will be used to transport any students needing a lift from the Q store to the assembly point for the parade.

Siblings not part of Cadets who want to march with other Scots All Saints College students are asked to wear the winter uniform: Boys in long trousers, tie and blazer. Girls in kilt, navy tights and blazer with hair neatly tied back with a red, blue or navy ribbon and formal hat.

WAS Netball trials On Thursday 4 April the 1st VII netball team and a selection of under 15s players attended the WAS netball trials in Orange. The girls played matches against Orange Anglican, Macquarie Anglican and Kinross Wolaroi. Both the Opens and Under 15s team played very well as they represented Scots All Saints College for the first time. Despite the matches not being officially scored we can report

that we were the strongest team in the 15s and very closely matched with Kinross in the Opens.

As a result of the trials Lara Abbott, Lauren Cant, Jorja Hazell and Lucy Proctor have gained selection into the WAS 15s team and Matilda Proctor and Zoe Lewis (shadow) have gained selection into the WAS Opens team.

We thank all the girls that represented the College so well at the WAS trials and wish the girls who progressing all the best at the upcoming AICES Netball Championships.

Students compete in da Vinci Decathlon The inaugural da Vinci Decathlon was held at Scots All Saints College recently in what was a wonderful opportunity for students in the Central West to participate in a high-level academic competition across ten different academic disciplines.

These disciplines included English, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Art, Poetry and Code Breaking.

The students from Years 5 -8 responded magnificently to the challenge and performed admirably in all of the disciplines. One of the highlights of the event was the Creative Producers section where students were required to perform as a small group to dramatically demonstrate balance in a specific context. These presentations were of a high standard and the judges were extremely impressed with the creativity and team work that was evident.

Living French – Year Y 5 Stud dents

Living French – Year 5 Students We have begun to learn how to tell the time in French.

We began by constructing sentences about the time in French and the clearest phrases were left on mini whiteboards.

The Year 5 students physically demonstrated the time, by using their arms as clock hands and hoops to represent the clock face, hence creating Scots All Saints College’s first ‘French Human Clock’!

The aim of the activity was to slowly introduce the students to the basics of French numerology, and key terminology when telling the time.

Hopefully this was a fun and interactive approach. Personally, I am excited to see what the students remember in our next lesson!

Rugby off to a good start

Scots All Saints College took on Stannies last Saturday in a trial match on Scots Campus main oval.

Five SASC teams took to the field wearing their new jerseys for the first time. Play started with the U15s in the fog and finished with the First XV in front of a strong home crowd cheering from the sidelines.

Thanks to Stannies and all the players, coaches, parents and students for making it a great day.

HICES Debating Round Three

Last Friday 5 April, Scots All Saints College took a contingent of debaters from Year 5 to Year 10 to compete in Round Three of HICES Debating at Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange.

The Junior team of Lincoln Craft, Imogen Ellis, Lily Grey and Sritha Atluri mounted a convincing case debating the merits of a change to the international symbol of disability but were outmaneuvered by their Kinross opposition.

The Year 7 and 8 teams consisting of Luke Burgess, Elizabeth Walsh, Connie McGlashen and Jai Valabjee and Jamie Healy, Xavier Adams, Harriet Lowe, Sophie Baker and Emily Brown respectively, explored the idea that city to country exchanges hold more value than international student exchange programs.

Both teams put their best foot forward but were unlucky to concede to Blue Mountains Grammar School and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School.

The Year 10 teams of Austin Markwick, Sophie Cox, Simi Atluri and George Butler, Belinda Kidd, Jessica Settree, Robert Jeffries and Keeran Rajkumar, Charlotte Russell, Isobelle Sotter, Digby Sharpham and Jonah Siede all performed exceptionally well when tackling the concept that dictionaries limit our expression.

All three teams were victorious over their opposition from Kinross Wolaroi School, Blue Mountains Grammar School and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Jo Nicholls and Mr Andrew Maher who assisted with adjudication on the day. We look forward now to the final round of regular competition in May.

EVATT NSW Evatt NSW is the state round of Australia’s premier debating and diplomacy competition.

Evatt is a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition for students in Years 9-12.

It aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills.

The competition takes the form of a mock session of the UN Security Council. Teams of two students debate, amend, and vote on a prepared resolution from the perspective of their assigned nation. The students judged the most effective diplomats proceed to the next round.
