Happy Holidays!

I think we are all ready for a holiday following this challenging first term of school. Many of us have battled with COVID-19 and are still recovering.

Thank you to all the parents for your cooperation throughout this time. It has been somewhat stressful as you have completed regular RAHTs, isolated your children and yourselves and more…

Our teaching and support staff have been incredible. Whilst many have suffered with the virus, as have their families, they have backed each other up by taking absent colleague’s classes and duties to maintain the delivery of all classes.

No classes have been cancelled, and our children are the beneficiaries of that.

We have employed many casual staff who have been wonderful in supporting the College throughout this unpredictable term, and I wish to acknowledge their efforts.

So a very big thank you to everyone who has ensured that together we have maintained all of our operations throughout the term.

This holiday is well deserved, and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to fully recover for Term 2.

The significance of Easter Throughout the week, our students have been reminded of the significance of Easter through the regular Chapel services… and, of course, the traditional Easter Hat Parade!

Central to our Christian faith is the crucifixion of Christ and His resurrection, the promises of forgiveness and life eternal.

Might we all take time to pause and remember what Easter is about and to challenge ourselves to understand the story of Christ and God’s everlasting love for us.

Journeying towards Easter and The Lost Tomb of Jesus In 2009, one of our TV networks reported in the news that the tomb and the remains of Jesus had been found. The story promoted James Cameron's (Titanic director) documentary on the findings that they, of course, were telecasting.

Now, Christians have always declared that if you find the remains of Jesus, then the entire evidence for the faith falls to pieces. If the resurrection is a hoax, then, as the Apostle Paul declares in 1 Corinthians 15:19, “… then we (Christians) are to be pitied above all people".

I come back to the Apostle Paul’s words to the Christians living in Corinth: “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised ... And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:13-17).

I invite you to reflect on the stunning and unbelievable truth for many that Jesus did, in fact, conquer death and that we, too, have an open invitation to follow him into eternity.

Amen.

Year 7-12 HOMEWORK CENTRE

So, was the news true? Had Cameron’s researchers found the lost tomb of Jesus? I was working in television at the time, and I was asked to investigate the truth of the matter. I discovered several documentaries that disproved Cameron's findings and highlighted the deception, forgeries, and also filmmaker's manipulation of expert interviews.

Probably, the best documentary to uncover the truth was The Jesus Tomb Unmasked (Youtube).

It unpacked the archaeological evidence and interviewed the experts who featured in Cameron's film, who claim that their interviews were manipulated and edited to say things that they did not believe to be true.

I guess it's not surprising that a media network was happy to promote a lie in order to get ratings, but it's sad that they were not willing to investigate the deception that occurred in making the documentary.

Of course, false claims about what happened after Jesus’ death have been happening for 2000 years.

Indeed, the Gospel writer Matthew points out that the religious leaders made up a story to explain the empty tomb, which was that the disciples stole Jesus's body (Matthew 28:12-15).

Start of Term 2 I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Junior School during Term 1. We look forward to seeing all of the students back on Tuesday, 26 April, when Term 2 classes commence.

Easter Service and Easter Hat Parade As I write this, I look forward to seeing the Preparatory School students and the Infants students finish off the term with the Easter Hat Parade. The children will participate in a special Easter Service, and then parents are welcome to join us at 2:30 pm on the Infants oval for the Hat Parade.

ANZAC Day Service On our first Friday back next term, 29 April, all Junior School students will be taking part in a special ANZAC Day service.

Inter-House Cross Country Carnival The Junior School Inter-House Cross Country Carnival will be on Monday, 2 May. Parents are most welcome to come and cheer on the children.

Disco The Junior School Disco will be on Friday, 6 May. In the days leading up to the disco, the students will be participating in dance lessons from a dance company called “Footsteps”.

Ready to Lead This is our final week of preparation for Year 6 as they prepare to lead the Junior School Campus in the Peer Support program during Term 2. We are looking forward to giving every Year 6 pupil the opportunity to lead.

The peer support groups will include students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 5. We are going to focus on an anti-bullying module called Stronger Together. The weekly topics will include: • Feeling Safe Being Me – establishing a safe learning environment • Strong Me – identifying strengths & promoting resilience continued page 4

Mother’s Day Breakfast On Friday, 6 May, we will invite all of the mums of students in Prep and Kindergarten for a special breakfast.

Year 6 Camp The Year 6 students will be travelling to Lake Macquarie Crusaders Camp from Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 May. This is a fantastic camp experience NAPLAN Our Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting online NAPLAN exams in week 3 of Term 2.

HICES Debating Junior Division On Friday, our two HICES Debating Junior Division teams competed in Round 2 of the competition.

Both Year 5 and Year 6 teams were against Blue Mountains Grammar, debating the topic, ‘That Children Need a Dedicated Television Channel’ in the Affirmative.

Congratulations to both teams for a successful afternoon of debating and good luck in Round 3, which will take place early in Term 2.

Waste Free Day The Junior School held their Waste Free Day last Friday.

Students were given the challenge to pack a lunchbox without rubbish, using reusable containers and beeswax wrapping.

What a camp!

Stage 2 recently returned from their actionpacked camp. From admiring the beautiful cathedral cave at Wellington, to watching the Siamangs put on their display at Taronga Zoo to hitting the super slip n slide at Burrendong Sport and Recreation, a truly great time was had by all. Junior students also enjoyed the opportunity to camp at Billabong camp, try the sport of archery and learn about some of Australia’s prehistoric animals. I can’t wait to go again!

NSW Netball Schools Cup Last Thursday, a team of Stage 3 students participated in the NSW Netball Schools Cup. We began the day undefeated against a variety of Bathurst schools. Grace Cranston, Hollie Black and Jessie Abel demonstrated exceptional shooting skills moving around the circle effortlessly. Ellie Koffmann and Alexis Jarvis defended with determination, and Halle Elms, Georgia Rennie, Twiggy Thompson and Isla Fitzgerald ensured they worked as a team, controlling the games flow down to our shooters.

The girls represented our school respectfully, with outstanding sportsmanship and sheer determination to achieve and improve.

Unfortunately, we lost the final to St Mary’s Orange. This certainly will be a team to watch in the Bathurst Netball Saturday competition.

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones

Work Experience During our Year 10 Careers lessons, we have been discussing the many opportunities of work experience. How this program can help give you a taste of working life and, in some cases, set the course for your post-school adventures. All Year 10 have the opportunity to participate in this program.

Students need to find a host employer, confirm a week that suits both the host employer and family and double-check this does not clash with any school commitments/assessments.

Tyler Puzicha Oceania cycling champion Tyler Puzicha (Year 12) has had a great finish to her Oceania and Nationals cycling campaign.

At Nationals, Tyler won the Gold medal in the U19W National Champion Time trial with a PB, Gold in U19W National Champion Team sprint and was U19W Silver medallist in the Sprint.

Tyler went on to compete in the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Brisbane this week.

The last Oceania’s were held in 2019 due to COVID-19, and this was Tyler’s first opportunity for an international event.

Tyler is now Oceania Champion for the U19W Time trial and cleared her closest rival by nearly a second.

She won a Silver medal in the Sprint events and fifth place in the kierens after making the final.

On the last day, in her Australian team kit in the team sprint competing with a ACT and Queensland rider, they became Oceania Champions, also breaking the national record Tyler was a part of last year and setting a new Oceania record.

Congratulations Tyler.

Sevens success

Last Friday the Girls Rugby 7’s teams wrapped up their Term 1 competition.

The U16 (Years 9/10) girls made it to the grand final losing out in an agonisingly close match to Orange Anglican Grammar School with an opportunity to win it in the dying seconds just slipping through the fingers.

The U18 (Years 11/12) girls not only made it to the grand final but went on to beat James Sheahan convincingly.

Soccer We’ve been handed a nice holiday-friendly draw for this weekend’s soccer fixtures. The majority of our teams have been given byes. The remaining teams have been drawn to play other SASC teams in their age group. Browne hits purple patch and goes for gold Our very own Nikki Browne has been killing it in the swimming pool of late. Nikki is off to Adelaide during the school holidays, where she’ll compete in the National Age Swimming Championships, qualifying for the 15 years 50m freestyle. This run of recent success can be attributed to our dear old friend – hard work.

Nikki is currently in the water for eight sessions a week, plus an additional two sessions in the gym.

HICES Netball We had a successful trip to Orange last week for the WAS Netball trials, with a whole bunch of brilliant netballers earning selection in the WAS Netball team to compete at the AICES Cup in Term 2. Shout out to our Opens representatives - Mia Baggett, Lucy Proctor, Lauren Cant, Hannah Stanmore, Amelia Triggs, Phoebe Moller and Charlotte Lindsay. As well as our U15 WAS representatives - Amelia Davies, Eliza Fox, Kate Proctor, Ella Kilby and Calla MacCabe.

Cowan win House Cricket Competition

Congratulations to Cowan House, the 2022 House 6 a Side Cricket champion.

During Week 9, the houses played a mini cricket tournament. The games were played on the tennis courts with modified rules resulting in fast and exciting cricket.

The early games resulted in wins for Booth and Dunlop who became the earlier tournament favourites. Angus Parsons was on national team duty for game two and his absence for Dunlop was felt as they fell to Cowan in the preliminary rounds.

Cowan and the surprise packet, Cuthbert moved to the final held on Friday. The final was highly competitive with both teams trading blows with bat and ball. Cuthbert looked the favourite for the

Senior Rugby Report

On Saturday, the senior boys played their first rugby games of the season in a trial match with local rivals St Stannislaus College. Up first was the 2nd XV, who played a strong contest. The boys practised well all week and played with discipline and structure. The first half saw the boys come up out of the gate a little slow, but eventually, Toby Dickenson crossed the line, and Oliver Manners finished with a try to end the half where the boys were up 12-5. In the second half, the boys really rose to the occasion and were dominant in their defence, holding the opposition to zero points. SASC scored another four tries from Charlie, an amazing intercept try for Liam Francis, another try to the dominant Oliver Manners and finally Christian Blasig. Final Score 29-10 Win. The 1st XV were next coming up against a slick and quick Stannies side. We did well to keep the score tight leading up the half as we were very strong in

game with a strong lineup, however, it was Cowan who prevailed by 5 runs to take the title and glory.

Stannies were leading at the half 12-0. In the second frame, we made a few personnel changes, which seemed to trigger the boys. We came out with a greater compete level, and it did not take us long to find the white line. Nick Betts smashed his way over the line from some hard work from the forwards with Hamish Siegert converting. Not long later, Bill Bremner scored again from great driving play from the forwards, where he dove over the ruck in the corner for our second try. Hamish Siegert converted with an amazing kick from the corner to put us up 14-12. With four minutes remaining, Stannies were able to get the ball to their big centre, who helped them get over the line to go up by three. We had another chance in the final minute where we started making ground and had them under pressure but we just ran out of time. Final Score SASC 14 v SSC 17.

A great performance for our first games of the season.

Old Boys versus First XV Cricket match

The Old Boys recently played the SASC First XI in an enjoyable match to end the 2021/22 cricket season.

The Old Boys team comprising of past students from The Scots School and All Saints College, whilst the First XI team had a mixture of players from Years 9, 10 11 and 12.

The match was played on the picturesque Main Oval at the Senior campus, and after 80 overs of cricket, the Old Boys were declared worthy victors. Both teams played some excellent cricket with the Old Boys igniting memories of past glories with some robust batting, whilst the First XI team showed the way of the future with some

excellent all-round cricketing skills.

In the end, the superior physical strength and wily experience of the Old Boys were the difference between the two teams. It was a fitting way to end an enjoyable season, and I congratulate both teams on an excellent match.

I would like to thank Mr Greg Radford for helping to organise the fixture, as well as team captains, Mr Brett Cooper and Hamish Siegert, for leading their respective sides in an exemplary manner. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mr Matt Poole, Mrs Michaela Barclay, Mr Andrew Maher, Mr Matt Banning and Mr

Justin Adams for their assistance on the day. Finally, thank you to all of the players for the sporting and positive way in which they played the match.

HICES Debating Round Two Last week saw our debating teams at Scots All Saints College contest Round 2 of the HICES Debating Competition.

Our Year 9/10 team were scheduled for the bye this round, so it was down to our Year 7/8 team of Stirling Miller, Suhaila Murshed, Eliza Rennie and new team member Margo Sawell and our Year 11 team of Jamie Healy, Ella Kay, Olivia Carmody and Xavier Adams to represent the college.

Year 11 was first off the blocks with a debate on Wednesday afternoon against Blue Mountains Grammar School, considering the topic ‘That posts containing children on social media should be considered exploitative and prosecuted as such.’ After an administrative error, which saw both teams prepare the Affirmative side of the topic, the SASC team graciously agreed to flip their arguments and enter the debate as the Negative team.

The ensuing debate was closely contested with Blue Mountains Grammar narrowly securing the win. Our 7/8 team stepped into the fray on Friday against a well-drilled opposition from Macquarie Anglican Grammar School to interrogate the topic that ‘Acts of terrorism should be given media coverage.’ Both sides raised compelling arguments, but ultimately our team from SASC secured the win, keeping their unbeaten record intact.

We look forward to seeing what Round 3 has in store for us early next term.

STEM and French – an interdisciplinary initiative for Year 7 Students were given a direct opportunity to foster innovation by researching a major attraction that continually brings people to any French-speaking nation and to create a 3D construction. The finished products were amazing.

Music students perform at their best Although Covid lockdowns limited students from performing in 2020-2021, it did not stop the talented musicians of the Amadeus Academy from practicing their instruments, studying music theory and completing exams. Each week motivated music students from the Senior School attend a before-school class to learn the finer points of Music Theory and History as part of the College’s Amadeus Academy. These classes enrich the students’ performance and theory understanding, allowing them to achieve higher levels of success in their individual and classroom music programs.

Last week, the final students were recognised for their outstanding results in the Australian Music Examinations Board and Trinity College of London exams during 2021-2022. THE WIBURD TROPHY Last weekend, the First XI versus Old Boys and Girls XI cricket match was contested for the Don Wiburd Trophy. This should not be confused with the Wiburd Shield, which was a Rugby competition that Don organised for Year 10 teams and continues to be played statewide.

Don Wiburd joined the staff of The Scots School sometime during the Headmastership of Alan McLucas (1949-1952). He was heavily involved in the school’s sporting program, coaching cricket and Rugby. He was concerned that country boys were disadvantaged through a lack of competitions and opportunities to compete with other teams. The Wiburd Shield Rugby competition addressed this issue, and more locally, the Western Associated Schools was created to provide a framework of competition between All Saints', St Stanislaus College, The Scots School, and Wolaroi (later Kinross-Wolaroi).

Don was its secretary for many years. I am not aware of any parallel organisations for girls’ sports, which would be a commentary on the times. Because of his role in all of the boys’ schools in the Central West, Don became a well-known figure at all of them. After Scots Old Boys and Girls Association leaving Scots, he was President Barry Nott with the associated with St Wiburd Trophy in 2007.

area with a particular interest in cricket, and Don, came up with the idea of a First XI vs Old Boys Cricket match.

It was strongly supported for many years by members of the Nott family, the Rindfleish family and Jamie Saba.

Roger Cantwell usually served as honorary umpire. Ron Radford was also a great supporter, and last Sunday, both of Ron’s sons Peter and Greg played for the Old Boys and Girls, with grandson Ben playing for the First XI. Greg Radford was responsible for organising the Old Boys and Girls Team for this year, with Mr Phil Cant organising the First XI. This year’s match was organised successfully at very short notice.

The Old Boys are the first recorded winners in 1999, and have won it every year since, with the exception of a loss to the First XI in 2001, and a tie in 2002. Whilst the result is of some importance, it is largely an opportunity for former students to meet and have an annual reunion.

After the integration of the two schools, The Scots School Old Boys Association invited Old Bathurstians to participate in the 2019 match.

A COVID-19 enforced adjournment of the game occurred in 2020-21, but it has made a welcome return.

association with both Scots and All Saints', and his renown in the community generally, it has been decided to retain the trophy for award to the winner of the annual match. It will soon undergo some refurbishment, to ensure it has a long life.
