Scots All Saints hosts regional da Vinci Decathlon The da Vinci Decathlon has grown into one of the largest academic competitions in Australia.

From small beginnings at Knox Grammar School almost 20 years ago, thousands of students are currently competing at regional centres or online for the right to attend the National Championships later this year.

Prayer and Coffee Morning

Will be held at the College Chapel, Campus West (Saints) from 8:00 am-9:00 am.

The competition is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, the great renaissance artist, sculpture, inventor, writer, engineer and mathematician. Leonardo embodied what we refer to as STEM education. He was able to ‘join the dots’ between so many areas of research and learning.

Students compete in teams of eight in age-based groups. Over the past three days, we have hosted Year 5 & 6, Year 7 & 8 and Year 9 to 11 teams from schools across our region.

It’s a truly demanding competition with teams competing against each other and the clock across 10 challenges. Students test their engineering, mathematics, chess, code-breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers and cartography skills.

Middle School celebrate 'Francophonie Day' French speakers throughout the world celebrate ‘Francophonie Day’ on 20 March, an occasion to appreciate French language and culture in all its diversity. Fortunately, Scots All Saints College had the honour of welcoming André François Giroux, Consul General of Canada on Friday 19 March, to our College.

The Consul General addressed the Middle School students regarding the boundless opportunities that are created when you gain the skills of different languages. ‘Having another language will open the world to you, in ways you cannot imagine. You will have an advantage that others will not have.’

We were also privileged to host comedian and educator Sean Murphy, who performed to our Year 8 students the spectacular and hysterical - Tiguidou!

This provided an exploration of French Canadian language and culture through the prism of interactive comedy. It was educational, fun and thoroughly amusing. The students were completely engaged!

It was also an opportunity for our own French Language Program to be endorsed. One that is creative, dynamic and offers authentic experiences for students to embrace the learning of French. We also offer a unique engagement for students to be part of 'Bonjour Bathurst’ the College's French TV program. This allows students to apply what they have learnt beyond the classroom walls. Learning a language as a young person can be life changing!

UAC (University Admission Centre) UAC applications will open on 1 April for 2022 University placements. All Year 12 students will receive their UAC PIN direct from UAC via email.

Students will also need to know their NESA student number to apply. You DO NOT need to apply now, applications do not close until 30 September 2021.

Not all Universities have put their courses up yet – so this is a good time to be researching what you are interested in and making a ‘shortlist of courses’.

NSW Minerals Council Careers Dinners offer students an insight into the mining industry, the diversity of fulfilling careers available, and an array of stimulating options for tertiary study.

The event will feature presentations from industry representatives and the higher education sector, including those in the early stages of their career, and universities currently offering mining-related qualifications.

Work Experience Work Experience for 2021 will look a little bit different this year. We are not designating a particular week for the block but instead allowing students to find a week during the year that works for them (no assessments due during that time), their parents and the host employer. For boarding students, this placement must take place from their home location (ie not staying in boarding), so a great time to consider could be the last week or first week of term. You can consider placements anywhere in Australia but take into consideration accommodation and adult supervision.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get a taste for a career. Please contact Ms Jones if you would like further information on possible opportunities and application procedures.

All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

“Maaaarge, the rains are here!”, said everyone this week. But the crazy weather hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm with plenty happening and plenty planned in our lead-up to the Easter break.

NETBALL WAS Netball trials were held in rainy old Orange on Wednesday. Despite the weather, our girls were able to shine with a number of players earning selection in the WAS team.

Three cheers for Annie Triggs, Annabelle Cooper, Nikki Browne, Lucy Proctor, Jorja Hazell, Mia Baggett, Lauren Cant, Grace Evans, Holly Stokes, Phoebe Moller and Matilda Proctor.

Summer Sports Photos – Junior and Middle School A reminder that Summer Sport photos will take place Thursday 25 March for our Middle School students and Friday 26 March for our Junior School students during Active Afternoons.

Students are required to bring their competitive playing uniforms to school for their photos.

RUGBY This Saturday a number of our College teams will take to the field in their first hit-out of 2021 in a series of trial matches at St Stanislaus College.

Our U14s side is scheduled to play at 1:00 pm.

Students are required to meet Mr Jackman at 12:00 pm under the big cross.

Our Under 16s and Opens teams are scheduled to play at 2:00 pm and are asked to meet at 1:00 pm for pre-game warm-ups.

Students must play in their College Rugby jumper, shorts and socks. Rugby boots and mouth guards must also be worn. Students must also bring their own drink bottle with their name clearly marked – because of COVID-19 restrictions we’re currently not sharing drink bottles.

And breaking news, we’ve just had two students named in the Central West Girls Rugby team to compete at the upcoming NSW Junior Country Championships in Kiama.

TRIATHLON Next week’s NSW All School Triathlons has been cancelled due to the recent floods.

We’ll get back to you when a new date has been announced.

CRICKET It’s grand final weekend and our 11s, 15s and Opens teams have all made it through to the big dance. Our 11s play on Police Paddock Oval 2 while our 15s and Opens both play at Alan Morse Park.

The forecast looks 'pretty good' (in a Richie Benaud voice), so grab a coffee, grab your fold-out chair and check out some great junior cricket this Saturday morning.

BASKETBALL Four of our basketball teams are playing finals this week. Our Girl's 1st team take to the court this evening while our two Years 7-8 Boys teams, the Pumas and Hurricanes, will battle it out on Friday night. Unfortunately, last night our Lions went down to the Hotshots in a super close game, losing by just six points.

MONDAY NIGHT TOUCH Monday night Touch Grand Finals were cancelled this week due to the weather and rescheduled for Monday 29 March. Good luck to the Sombreros and Magellanics who will do battle.

SASC Swimming Academy News Our Summer season (Term 1) is drawing to an end. Some statistics for our Summer season are below which show the support and success of our programs.

• There were 110 students involved in our various swimming and squad programs in Term 1.

• We had 42 Learn2Swim students.

• We now have six fully trained Learn2swim instructors (students from Years 11 and 12) and a few still in training.

• We had 10 students trained in Lifeguarding.

• We had 16 adult residential staff trained in Lifeguarding.

• We have had 13 students who have qualified for the NSWCIS carnivals, which were last week or will be in early Term 2.

We thank our students and families that have supported our Swimming Academy Program, and we especially thank our coaches and instructors for their great work in and out of the pool.

Swimming Squads – Autumn Season We are surveying our parents/students now via a google form to see how many students would be interested in another brief Autumn season (the first five to six weeks of Term 2). The squad sessions would be in the afternoons only and probably two to three sessions per week.

Summer Sports Finals Congratulations to the SASC 11s, 15s and 1st XI for making the grand final in the Bathurst District Junior Cricket Association this weekend. The games are set to be played at 11s – Learmonth Oval, 15s and 1st XI at Morse Park. We pass on our congratulations and best wishes for the players and coaches this weekend.

Winter Season Transition We express our appreciation to the students and parents as we transition from the Summer season to the Winter season. It certainly is a busy time and difficult to manage the finishing of one season properly whilst trying to get prepared for the next.

Over the next week and throughout the holidays, information regarding the College Core Sports and their registration processes will be distributed to parents. Once the season gets up and running, we will have a weekly schedule in The Roar and last minute changes and cancellations communicated via the SASC Facebook page and via email.

Summer Sport Awards Assemblies This Friday, next Monday and next Tuesday will see our student’s achievements and efforts be acknowledged at the Summer Sports Assemblies.

Whilst not every student will receive an award, it is important to recognise the students who have had great seasons and also a chance for other students to challenge themselves for new goals with the next sports season approaching.

ROAR Year 8 Tech students develop skills in sheep husbandry As part of Technology Mandatory, Year 8 students have been engaged in an Agricultural and Food Technology program.

They have had the opportunity to grow their own vegetables and learn some cooking skills while gaining knowledge about the different agriculture sectors. They are about to complete their last week of the program and were recently given the opportunity to develop their skills in sheep husbandry.

Twenty-four students travelled to the Campus East (Scots) agriculture department to perform a practical session. Students were delighted to get their hands dirty and undertake activities associated with animal husbandry and see the senior College's farm facilities. They were blown away by the opportunities that await them in Year 9 Agriculture and can’t wait to visit again.

Thank you to Mrs Dawes for taking the time out of her busy schedule to run the session.

Her time and enthusiasm towards our students is greatly appreciated.

Year 11 Physics - yes, it is rocket science!

Year 11 Physics are currently studying the modules Kinematics and Dynamics. They are completing a Depth Study assessment to analyse the motion of water rockets. Students need to design their own experiment to test one aspect of flight by changing one launch variable. They will complete an experimental report as well as an explanation of the physics concepts involved in the experiment.

The Scots School 75th Anniversary Reunion

Probably the most valuable piece of heritage from The Scots School branch of the college family is that there is a group of our first students who can still visit and did so last week. It was a special delight to host six of our oldest Old Boys for a reunion to celebrate 75 years of the foundation of The Scots School.

Of the group who visited, Hugh Ralston, Bill Morton and Tim Hector attended the Branch School from its beginnings in 1942. Jeremy Trevor-Jones, Hedley Taylor and Colin Davidson all joined the Branch School before its closure in 1945. Four of these boys: Tim Hector, Jeremy Trevor-Jones, Hedley Taylor and Colin Davidson became foundation students of The Scots School in 1946. At that time, Scots Bathurst did not offer leaving certificate courses, and all the boys finished their schooling at Scots College Bellevue Hill.

Our six visitors all had distinguished careers in business, grazing, the law and aviation. Jeremy TrevorJones named several former Scots and All Saints students whom he taught to fly. Bill Morton’s wife Diane, co-incidentally, is descended from John Lee who built Karalee, and is also related to several notable All Saints students including Major Harold McIntosh.

The Old Boys and their wives had afternoon tea with the Head of College, before visiting The Scots Museum and taking a tour of Campus East, which was the setting for many stories told during their stay.

COVID-19 restrictions limited their contact with the College, but presented the opportunity to visit the Bathurst Railway Museum. They were very keen to visit Campus East, where some of them still vividly recalled being soundly beaten in rugby on Watson Oval. Tim Sargeant gave a presentation in the All Saints Museum, where it emerged that two of the visitors had sisters that attended The Marsden School.

Before returning home, the Old Boys were presented with a special tie to mark their visit. It had the first Scots School crest, adapted from the Cooerwull Academy crest that was used in 1946. It was later replaced by the much more familiar shield that was designed by Jeremy Trevor-Jones’ father and adopted in 1947.

In 2022, it will have been 80 years since the establishment of The Scots College Branch School.

The Old Boys have already indicated that they intend coming back for another reunion to mark this occasion.

Agriculture at Scots

The tread of horse and cattle hooves on the grounds of Campus East goes back to the 1820s when the site was owned by the Lee Family who bred prize-winning cattle and thoroughbred race horses. In 1954, the then Chairman of the Council of The Scots School Rev. Alan Dougan and the Headmaster investigated setting up a farm at Scots. It became known as The Model Farm. It was chiefly a dairy, but whilst not much is recorded from the time, sheep and cattle were being bred and exhibited in local shows and the Royal Easter Show from the late 1950s onward.

By the 1970s, the farm was in difficulties. A milk quota system that was originally designed to keep dairy farms sustainable was actually causing a glut of milk, and the farm was no longer cost effective. The farm was eventually closed and much of its equipment sold off. Agriculture continued to be taught successfully at the school on a theoretical basis until the mid1980s when a cattle stud was established with Mr David Crofts as Agriculture Teacher and Farm Manager. A border Leicester stud also operated for a few years with Mr Peter Matus in charge. The College’s neighbour at East Campus, Miss Lorna Ray, has continued a family tradition begun by her father of taking a close interest in the farm.

The Ag Farm, as it is usually referred to, has continued to grow in the care of Mrs Libby Dawes, and this year has seen a major expansion of its facilities with the Werona Agriculture Centre being recently completed. The Cattle and Sheep teams have also begun the year with animals exhibited at the Blayney Show over the last weekend.
