I am delighted to announce that after a great deal of research and development, the Scots All Saints Preparatory School, for Pre-K aged children, will open in 2021 on our Western (All Saints) Campus on Eglinton Road. This is an exciting development for the College, extending and expanding the educational choices for parents across the region.

Attached to this edition of The Roar are all the details concerning the educational approach, which is aligned to the NSW K, 1 & 2 curriculum, the outstanding facilities and the amazing environment to enable young children to flourish.

With programs for 2 – 5 days and after-school care provided, the Scots All Saints Preparatory School will be ready to launch in 2021. See inside for details.

Children can participate in Chapel Services, assemblies and attend the outstanding library on campus as part of the Junior School. Please see the flyer attached which reveals the new design for our new Prep learning space to be completed for the start of the 2021 school year.

As a result of these new arrangements, all PreKindergarten students enrolled at Scots All Saints College in 2021 will attend the new Preparatory School on the All Saints Campus.

Presenting Our College Wellbeing Model – Wellbeing SPACE As I have stated previously in The Roar, the development of a suitable and meaningful wellbeing model for Scots All Saints College is an important step in embedding wellbeing and positive psychology across the College as the model provides the necessary framework around which activities, initiatives and programs are structured.

It is my pleasure this week to reveal the model to our College community.

As part of the Practising Certificate for Wellbeing in Education course completed last year by many College staff, participants looked at a number of wellbeing models and frameworks. These included 'generic' models that are used by many organisations as well as some models that had been customised to better suit the user context. There was an overwhelming preference that we develop our own unique model based on our individual College context. Within three groups in each class of participants we considered the key elements that we believed should be included in our College model. As it turned out, there was a lot of overlap within our lists of elements.

One group identified the key elements for our College context as being Academic, Community, Emotional (and Social), Physical and Spiritual. These are in keeping with the College’s mission and vision statements, and we could not think of any wellbeingrelated activity, program or initiative that would not slot into one or more of these elements. Since we are focusing on positive education, we are looking to increase the level of student and staff health within each of these key element areas. Playing around with the letters, it also became apparent that by reordering the elements the resulting SPACE acronym would tie in nicely with our College’s

branding profile. Importantly, however, the elements preceded the final word.

There are many facets to the visual graphics emblem that encapsulates the model. The sectored pentagon is indicative that each of the elements is integral in its contribution to the whole of the College wellbeing model. The outside triangles provide for a threedimensional aspect to the emblem, symbolising that each element extends further to include the various activities, programs and initiatives associated with that element. The visual graphics for the model incorporate the College’s colours and font, providing for consistency of message. Finally, the arrangement of colours within the emblem provide a nice contrast when used in conjunction with the College emblem. continued page 4

As we prepare to wrap up our Regional Visits program for 2020, we would like to thank all of our wonderful parents who have joined us ‘out and about’ in country NSW. Co-Curricular Prefects 2021 Our Co-Curricular Prefects, Charlotte Russell and Robert Jeffries, were introduced to the student body last Friday.

After meeting with key staff involved in co-curricular programs the Prefects have set some goals for the short and long term. The ideas of some more lunch time activities such as a table tennis competition, a chess club (using large chess pieces), lunch time performances and a system for allocating house points to students involved in activities were well received. We look forward to some of these initiatives commencing in the next few weeks.

SASC Swimming Academy We are in negotiations with another swim coach to join our SASC Swimming Academy staff. We hope to be able to inform our students and parents very soon of the extra swimming squad sessions that will be available to our students for the remainder of the season.

Meet our SASC Swimming Academy Staff This week we introduce two of our swim teachers in training. The students form a vital part of The Scots All Saints Swimming Academy education program. The student teachers have successfully completed their training and add greatly to our programs. We thank them for the excellent work that they are doing with the Learn2Swim program.

Swimming Academy – Swim Teachers and Lifeguard final training – First Aid On Saturday (31 October) our students who have been learning to be teachers of swimming or lifeguards finished their theoretical training with a First Aid Course. We thank our Swimming Program Coordinator, Sharon Inwood for her dedication and work with these programs. In the coming weeks our Boarding Staff members will be completing the Lifeguarding course to better serve our boarding students during the summer. continued page 7

Eisteddfod Success – Dance We congratulate the Senior Girls dance group from Term 3 that entered the Bathurst Eisteddfod and won a Gold Award (a score of 92 out of 100). Under the direction of our dance teacher, Molly, the group developed and practiced their routines during Active Afternoons sessions in Term 3. We are thrilled with their success and look forward to developing our dance program in the future.

COVID19 Procedures - Sport We are fortunate to be able to have our students involved in organised and competitive sport during the uncertainty of COVID-19. We remind parents and visitors of the requirement that they are to record their attendance at school sport events. For cricket matches, this involves completing the BDJCA online form each Saturday morning as you arrive at the ground. The scorers for each team playing will have a laminated QR code to scan. We thank the parents who collect and help supervise swimmers in our swimming academy programs who have been using the ‘sign on sheet’ at the entrance of the Indoor Pool. We encourage you to continue recording your attendance. The basketball stadium and local touch association also have a COVID procedure which needs to be followed by all players and spectators. For school based sports such as WAS touch and tennis we have ‘sign on sheets’ for spectators – please look out for them on your arrival and record your attendance. We will be rolling out a QR code system in coming weeks to hopefully simplify this vital process in the tracking of COVID-19.

The Term is moving at a cracking pace!

Core Sports I have been pleased with the progress our Core sporting teams are making in the local competitions.

With a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rules, our Year 3 and 4 basketball teams are improving every week. Their energy on the court, developing skills and ability to play as a team has been pleasing and bodes well for a good season. Our more experienced basketball teams are fine tuning their skills and showing some inspiring signs of development. We have some very talented basketballers on the horizon.

Touch Football is our most popular Middle School sport for girls with seven teams in the local

competition. Under the direction of our wonderful coaches, the girls have been perfecting skills and tactics during their Active Afternoon training sessions and are keen to execute them during games on a Monday afternoon. With only one match played so far (apart from Yr 5 & 6 who have been on camp), Scots All Saints College are looking competitive. A number of our Junior girls were also involved in the fixture against Kinross Wolaroi School on Saturday with both SASC teams winning 7-0.

Our cricketers continue to challenge their opponents on either a Friday evening or a Saturday morning.

Whilst the hard-ball cricketers have had some disruption with inclement conditions, they have had some opportunity to demonstrate their skills with pleasing results. There is a lot of passion in our young cricketers and I am certain they will have a most enjoyable and rewarding season ahead of them.

Our four Middle School tennis students, also dealing with Saturday morning showers, have played two rounds in a WAS competition against Kinross Wolaroi School and St Stanislaus College. Our students are enjoying the team format and are looking forward to a complete round in the Junior Division. The tennis team will have a bye this weekend.

The new multi-purpose (basketball, netball & volleyball) court behind the Bickerdike Centre is looking sensational. This space will provide our students with another quality play area for Physical Education and Active Afternoons. The completion date is just around the corner.

Hands-on science lesson for Year 9 students This week the 9.3 class science students conducted a sheep brain dissection. It was part of their Coordination and Reproduction topic being taught by Ms Peebles a practicum student on her final school placement before acquiring her teaching degree.

Students were surprised by the complexity of the brain and understood the need to protect its delicate structure with a rigid brain case.

They also completed practical experiments investigating the knee-jerk reflex and sensitivity. They were amazed at finding out that many parts of the body can’t discriminate between two touch points and one. These topics and many more will be tested in the examinations in just a few weeks time.

The yearly exam period for Years 7-10 commences in the next few weeks so it is timely to remind everyone that the College has a subscription to the ELES Study Skills Handbook. ELES is a comprehensive online interactive resource containing 28 interactive modules to help students develop and improve the various skills used to set goals for study, deal with homework and prepare for exams. Each module has information, video and audio podcasts, quizzes and games as well as a summary and FAQs section.

Performing Arts Academy News The Performing Arts Academy was launched in 2019 at our inaugural Music Showcase held at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre. Our College community witnessed superb music from the Middle and Senior School Ensembles and celebrated the effort of our students and staff. The finale, pictured on the right, was a highlight of the new College with scores of students playing and singing as one.

The 2020 Music Showcase will be live streamed in the coming weeks in digital form. This unique year has provided a variety of new experiences and challenges for our students and enabled creativity to flourish.

The recording studio has been regularly used across the pandemic becoming the dominate medium for performances.

The Digital Showcase has created many new opportunities for students to be involved in the

running of the show. Lights, camera operation, editing, live streaming, recording in the studio, production and all the behind the scene elements have been worked on by the student Tech Teams. It is so encouraging to witness young women and men adapt, explore new skills, build an identity, invest and succeed in this new passion.

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, What a relief it’s been to watch the number of COVID-19 cases in NSW and Australia alike decrease. We’re hearing whispers from students about their excitement at the prospect of long awaited beach holidays and visiting family interstate, it seems that the fog has, quite literally lifted here in Bathurst.

We continue to monitor the advice of NSW Health and the NSW Department of Education and the news is encouraging.

Many activities have already resumed with more to come in the very near future. The COVID-19 committee are working together to ensure that the upcoming camps and end of year celebrations are COVID Safe and comply with all government directives and we will keep you informed as scheduled events get closer. As always, it’s still very important to get tested if you have any symptoms related to COVID. Please don’t hesitate to contact the college if you have any questions or concerns.
