Scotland in 4 Seasons Editor’s Welcome Hello!

Welcome to the 2022 Spring edition.

Thank you very much for all the positive feedback, it is a pleasure to hear how and why the magazine is enjoyed. There are four common elements in your feedback: stunning photography, positivity, easyTopping up the hazelnuts for on-the-eye layout and the variety the local red squirrels of content.

Time really does tick along quickly when you have something significant to measure it against. In January 2021, we launched the very first edition of the magazine, and now, here we are in 2022, with our 6th issue. The magazine has come a long way since the first edition: it has grown, evolved and expanded, and built a following. It is a joy to work on, and I am proud of creating something positive during a very difficult time under the cloud of a pandemic.

Our Spring front cover features a beautiful Roe deer doe photographed in a forest clearing in amongst the bluebells.

The camera shutter gave away my presence but the doe wasn’t too concerned, and in classic roe deer style, she continued to watch me as I walked away. It was a lovely spring morning to be out, and the spring light was perfect for taking photographs.

The 2022 weather has been mixed to say the least, and I do confess to missing the traditional wintry weather of freezing temperatures, and snow. The photograph on page 4 was taken in late April as a shower made its way over the hillside.

No matter what our weather has been doing this year, I have been making the most of it by getting out and about with the camera, and photographing the scenery and my favourite subjects: the deer, mostly red and roe.

Each month when I’m out in the wilds, the moon catches my eye, what a beauty and a great opportunity to stop and ponder. a while.

Scotland has centuries of wonderful stories sharing how people connect to the beautiful place we are fortunate to call home. VisitScotland have designated 2022 as Scotland’s Year of Stories. Throughout 2022, stories inspired by, created, or written in Scotland will be showcased and celebrated.

Every inch of Scotland has a story to share, and that’s why so many people flock here to immerse themselves in Scotland’s places, history and landscapes. Scotland in 4 Seasons Magazine is all about stories and sharing how we connect to Scotland.

In this issue, seashore loving Collette in the East Neuk explores inspiration, the importance of joy and opening up to new opportunities, read Collette’s column on page 18.

Elaine Jamieson, the talented country lady cook radiates positivity and celebrates Scotland through her food, music and hospitality. You can find out more about Elaine on pages 29, and 43-45. We also meet Graeme Johncock and his black Labrador Molly, he shares his wonderful connection to Scotland through his story-telling. For energy, nothing will overtake Keith Steel, aged 77, and his love of skiing from Scotland’s hightops, find out more on pages 59-61.

We also feature Perthshire Artisans, and talented artists Fiona Matheson, Clare Blois, Karenina Johnson and Dot Walker. We have a fishing theme running through this edition, if you have not tried fishing I hope our writers will encourage you to give it a go. Fishing is a relaxing outdoor pastime, it’s sociable and also provides gentle exercise and is suitable for most people no matter your age or ability.

Plus, it’s a great inspiration for stories, we’ve all heard about the big one that got away.....

In January, we received sad news that Jock Duncan had passed away. Jock was the deer stalker on the remote Corrievarkie estate, and built the hut featured on the cover of our very first issue. For more than 4 decades the hut has been known to everyone as ‘Jock’s hut’ and has weathered the seasons and offered shelter to those in need.

In Scotland we have always celebrated the outdoors in one way or another. In ancient times, people gathered outdoors and worshipped the moon, the weather and took part in ceremonies blessing the coming of the seasons, hoping for warm, fertile summers and mild winters.

Some of the oldest outdoors events are still present in the modern calendar. The Braemar Gathering has origins dating back to 11th Century, and the Border towns Common Ridings are possibly the oldest equestrian events in the world. From January to December there are outdoor celebrations across Scotland including snowdrop festivals, Uphelly-Aa, market days, travelling fairs, Lammas, St Andrews day, Fireball ceremonies, Military Tattoo, countless local events and gala days. In the countryside there are river blessings to celebrate the start of the salmon fishing season, game and country fairs, and farm shows rejoicing the countryside.

In addition to the host of physical and mental health benefits associated with spending time outdoors, the variety of landscape, coastline, rivers and lochs offer locations to suit everyone’s interests. We are also fortunate enough to have four seasons, each with their own system of weather, to add to our enjoyment of being outdoors.

Many of the annual outdoor events have years of tradition behind them, with main arenas full of entertainment and animals presented by handlers, hoping to take away the best in show prize. Fairs and Shows are sociable places to meet up with family and friends and there’s always plenty to do as many feature ‘have a go’ stands where you can try your hand at fly fishing and casting, clay pigeon shooting, archery, broaden your knowledge with educational talks, enhance your kitchen skills with cookery demonstrations, learn about new products, off-road driving, admire vintage vehicles and much more.

As Spring gets underway we see a wider range of outdoor activities available, and as the days warm up (hopefully!), we have more daylight hours to spend time outdoors doing the things we love.

Walking, seeking creative inspiration, foraging for wild food, meditation, recovery, exercise, escape, stimulation...whatever your reason, enjoy and celebrate Scotland’s amazing outdoors and let Mother Nature nurture you in 2022.

“Storytelling has always been part of Scottish life, it is how we connect with one another and pass on tales, from grandparents to children, a group of walkers in a remote hillside bothy by the fireside to overseas visitors exploring Scotland for the first time, there is always a time and place for a story.

Some of our old, traditional stories hark back to a simpler life when each village had its own rich heritage of stories and were shared by the elders long before books or technology were invented. Storytelling keeps our language alive, old words long forgotten are brought to life in tales and remind us ancient places and how life was lived much more in tune with the land.

Throughout Scotland, there were stories relating to people, ghostly wildlife, mysterious beasts, superstitions, otherworlds, weather, and the local landscape.

By the fireside, our ancestors shared their tales with the next generation and the magic was carried in the flickering flames. Before technology took over, and if you were fortunate enough to have a childhood ritual of a bedtime story, you drifted off to sleep in the land of fairy tales and mythical creatures. It opened up your mind to other worlds, stirred your imagination in ways you never thought possible, perhaps they shared valuable life lessons but maybe the most poignant of all, bedtime stories provided happy memories lasting a lifetime.

In the vast open spaces of the Highlands it is easy to relax your mind and let your imagination flow over the landscape. Let your gaze soften as it takes you through the glens and forests, up the mountains and skimming across the lochs, and rivers. Scotland’s remote places may have changed very little over the spans of time, perhaps it is only the weather that has the power to alter the wilderness as the seasons ebb and flow through the centuries. The ancient and immovable boulders nestled into the land, snuggly wrapped by moss and heather, act as landmarks, and animal paths weave their way around them and head out across the hills opening up the land of myth and folklore. Scotland’s hills and mountains have distinctive names, sometimes they are known by a number of names, with folklore associations. We have stories of how Scotland’s landscape was shaped, tales of giants: the Old Man of Storr was a giant who had lived in Trotternish Ridge and when he was buried, his thumb was left jutting out the ground, creating the famous jagged landscape.

Selkies, and Kelpies, the monster of Loch Monar and Loch Ness. The Cailleach, tired from a long day herding deer, fell asleep on the top of Ben Cruachan, and while she slept, a Well she was tending overflowed, and ran down and flooded the valleys below, forming a river and then a loch.

Scotland’s native deer have roamed the wild lands since they were introduced to Britain at some point in the stone ages, and have inspired our creative thoughts for thousands of years and played their part in folklore.

Many of our Scottish legends associate deer with faerie folk. The faeries played an important role within Scottish folklore and the red deer of the Highlands were called faerie cattle. The deer provided the faerie folk with milk, and in return, the faeries protected the deer by targeting hunters with bewitched arrows. If a deer was killed by a hunter, the faeries would torment him. Scottish folklore is rich with tales of the fae folk protecting their deer and casting spells on hunters. From the Isle of Mull, a hunter killed a deer and was carrying it home with his friend. The hunter told his friend the deer was very heavy. His friend stuck a penknife into the deer and asked him how heavy the deer felt? The Hunter said it felt much light and could hardly feel any of the weight he was carrying. The extra weight had been put upon him by the faeries after he had killed their deer and the penknife had broken their spell.

We all have stories, old, new, inherited, fiction tales of myth and lore, or maybe a fishy tale or two from the riverside. By sharing, we bring our stories to life and carry on the centuries old tradition.”

Everybody Loves a good story By Storyteller Graeme Johncock

“Everybody loves a good story and Scotland has a long tradition of storytelling, whether it’s mythical creatures, spooky ghosts, or the heroic exploits.

The medium of storytelling has changed a little in the modern age. Most people enjoy stories while sitting around the TV instead of a fire, but the essence is still the same. Stories have the ability to get your heart beating a wee bit faster or the hair on the back of your neck to stand up. The Year of Stories should be good news for everybody, but as the writer behind Scotland’s Stories, it’s fantastic for me in particular.

I have always enjoyed the stories of Scotland’s history and folklore and a couple of years ago I discovered that I have a knack for telling them as well. Along with my tireless four-legged friend, Molly, we take every opportunity to travel around Scotland, scouring the country for stories. Back at home in Edinburgh, the dog gets a good rest while I get to the real work, writing about what we found.

The most important aspect of storytelling for me is to make sure that these tales are as accessible as possible. Not everybody has the time or patience for thorough historical analysis or a 20 minute, elaborate monologue.

Keeping my stories short, simple, and entertaining has meant that many more people have been able to enjoy them.

Platforms like Instagram have allowed thousands of talented photographers to share Scotland’s spectacular landmarks, but what’s important to me is the story behind that picture. Glencoe is beautiful but people should hear about what happened there. Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed sites in Scotland, but it has fascinating history and folklore to go with that stunning location.

These stories are what truly connect us to the landscape and those that came before. It’s not just the factual events gleaned from the history books, but the traditional tales of folk creatures, ghosts and monsters that give an insight into the beliefs and superstitions of our ancestors.

The old stories told to children often had a moral or a warning behind them. Dozens of stories tell of the dangerous Kelpies, shape-shifting water horses lurking in rivers and lochs. These beasts would beckon unwary men, women, and children onto their back and once there, the traveller wouldn’t be able to get off. The Kelpie would then gallop into the water, dragging their prey down to the deep. If there was ever a story to keep children from playing around near the water, that would do the trick.

When it comes to important morals, look no further than the story of Mallie and the Trow from Shetland. After her husband is lost at sea, poor Mallie is struggling to feed her children and begs for the charity of a neighbour. Even though her neighbour has plenty to spare, she sees no reason to give any away and closes the door on the widow.

When a strange man asks Mallie for hospitality that night, she shared the very last of her food with him, not realising that this was a magical Trow. He was touched by this poor widow helping a stranger when she was in such dire need herself and soon she starts finding gold coins in her peat stack. When the neighbour’s luck had changed, it was her turn to go beg at Mallie’s door. Of course Mallie didn’t turn her away but loaded her up with food and the promise that should she ever need more, all she had to do was ask.

For Scotland’s Year of Stories, I’ll be giving live talks and presentations for businesses, societies, and events as well as writing for both online and in print publications. On top of all this, Molly and I will carry on roaming Scotland to bring a new story almost every day through our social media and website.”

“There’s something about spring that makes us feel hopeful, like anything is possible. I love winter, with its cosy dark nights and shorter days, but we always seem to be happier in spring.

Coming out of a season of cold and darkness and into the warmth and light will naturally lift spirits, but there are biological reasons too; an increase in the hours of daylight affects our bodies’ production of serotonin, melanin, and vitamin D, all of which contribute to our mood.

The flowers and plants pushing through the freezing cold winter ground also inspire us to keep going, and to keep growing, regardless of the difficulties of the previous year.

Plant some seeds in time for spring, and the green shoots forcing their way through the soil will bring you immense joy. You can never guarantee that they’ll even grow, and what fruit, if any, they will bear. But you will always be surprised when they burst through the top of the soil and their tiny leaves start to unfurl.

Recently for me spring has also meant life-changing decisions. Last February I packed up my flat, and my life, in South East England, and returned to Fife after 20 years down south to make a new life in the East Neuk. Up until now this was easily the best decision I’d ever made. I've loved every minute of living in this beautiful corner of the country. But this year I’ve gone one step further. I’ve finally accepted that the corporate world I’ve worked in for the same 20 years is no longer how I wish to spend my days, and instead I should be spending my time doing something I enjoy. Maybe that’s because I’m turning 50 this year, or maybe it’s because the events of the last two years have shown how short and precious life really is. Whatever the reason, I’ve learned that I no longer need to, or should, invest my time and effort into work which doesn’t inspire me.

But how exactly do you find out what you enjoy when you’ve been doing the same thing for 20 years? How do you tap into your inner creativity and find inspiration, especially when the world has been so closed and strange?

You have to try living differently, whatever that looks like for you. Go for a walk. Read a book. Listen to music. Plant some seeds. Learn a new skill. You also have to give yourself grace, and allow yourself to try new things without being perfect at them. Play and explore and discover and create.

Until I figure out exactly what it is I want to do with my time, I’m going to carry on doing the things that bring me most joy this season – beach yoga on a bright and sunny April morning, eating an ice cream by the sea in the spring sunshine, planting chilli and pepper seeds on my window sill, and learning and growing as much as I can. New possibilities. New opportunities. New chances.”

“With the snow and early dark nights a distant memory I look forward with some trepidation to a brighter future.

As I sat at my desk with the ever faithful auction hound by my side, I scrolled through the ever increasing bevy of emails, and Ping, one catches my eye. A lady from Edinburgh with a large collection of pictures comprising of oil landscapes, acrylic and watercolour sketches, and contemporary collages, by a well-known Scottish artist from Inverness who was later murdered in Edinburgh. This certainly aroused my interest, so after exchanging a few emails, I set off to see the client in the shadows of the magnificent Forth Bridge. On viewing the eclectic mix of pictures and collages, l leave with a lasting memory: a 3D type collage with various colour splashes, Papier-mâché effects and a dental cast of the upper and lower teeth protruding out!

Not something I’d ever seen in art before.

People often ask what should they buy now for a future investment? If only I knew the answer, I wouldn’t be sat in a freezing saleroom in Scotland, instead I would be sunning myself somewhere warm without any midges enjoying my retirement.

But what should you buy? Well, gold and silver are usually a rock steady commodity and possibly any upcoming artists, but, there again, art is such a fickle thing and very volatile, so I would suggest sticking to things you like and would be happy to have in your own home. A good example is furniture: antique or something contemporary. As we are all aware, antique brown furniture has taken a nosedive over recent years, so you can pick up absolute gems in great condition for very little money at auction which should hopefully soon go up in value, fingers crossed.

At this time of year with new life beginning in the countryside and even the fair city of Glasgow coming to life with early rays of sunshine, my mind turns to the upcoming array of country shows and highland events and fairs, I start planning on the upcoming Show season. The Royal Highland Show, Scone, and Moy fair to look forward to, with meeting up with old friends and potential new clients, I still alas have to sort out the ever elusive accommodation.

Spring is a busy time, with lots going on as the auction calendar is well underway. My diary is full of appointments and has me tearing about all over the countryside seeing magnificent properties in magical glens to high rise flats in all the cities, it's never a dull time for the Travelling Auctioneer. No two days are ever the same, with our regular antique and fine art sales, with sections of coins, medals, pictures, and collectors’ items included, the ever popular whiskey and wine sales and our unique whiskey cask auctions. With an upcoming whisky cask sale, I am busily chasing up the clients and bonded warehouses (where all casks are stored in perfect conditions) for the endless paperwork and regauge measurements and strengths. This is swiftly followed by a sample bottle or two so I can taste the goods, produce my tasting notes, and send out samples far and wide of the Scottish liquid gold and then await the enquiries to flood in.

A popular auction we hold on a regular basis are the airport lost property sales. These auctions are always well liked and consist of lost property and items not collected. They usually throw up a few surprises. With the likes of Rolex Omega and other luxury watch brands and all sorts of jewellery including, recently, a stunning diamond tennis bracelet of approximately 11 carats! And not forgetting the many diamond engagement rings, wedding bands, and all other types of jewellery for both male and females, wheelchairs - I can never understand, bicycles and prams. There is a plethora of suitcases, that we go through to sort out all the clothing: ladies, gents, children’s’ toys and baby items, shoes, hats, and scarves. The lady keeper of Bees By Gael Wilkinson

“Like everything in nature, there’s a balance and the bees are no different.”

“As the early bulbs bloom and the very first lambs on the farm are being born most beekeepers are dealing with death. I know. That sounds so morbid and depressing and for a newbie beekeeper coming through their first Winter it can also be a bit of a shock.

Like everything in nature, there’s a balance and the bees are no different. The girls born late last Summer, are now experiencing their moribund days and as the nights shorten the Queen has started to lay the eggs that will grow into this years’ workers. The Winter worker bees in the hive have one final task to complete before they make way for the next generation, and that’s to feed the hatched eggs using the last of the winter stores then cap the cells with a little lid of wax to keep them safe as the larvae transition through the amazing process of metamorphosis. In only 21 days they’ll increase 1500 times in size and hatch into perfect adult bees. It’s a miracle that never ceases to amaze me and I love nothing more than holding a frame of brood in my hands and watching new life hatch from random cells across the golden comb.

The sad reality is that some hives don’t survive, succumbing to freezing damp, varroa mite infestation or starvation throughout the dark months. An important element of a beekeepers’ role is to manage these risks with the correct placement and upkeep of the hive hardware, approved mite treatments and monitoring of honey stores as the weather constantly changes here in Scotland. This year we’ve seen unseasonably warm spells which encourages the bees to be active which in turn requires more food so I’ve been checking on the hive stores more regularly than other years and I’ve been amazed at the speed that some of the larger colonies can chomp through kilos of pure carbohydrate in just a few days!

And so, each one of the Winter bees will pass the baton onto the next generation who will unceremoniously hoof them out of the hive as part of their housekeeping routine onto the ground near the entrance. It’s always sad to see their little (usually frozen) carcases on the ground and yet it’s an encouraging sign of new life on the way and the promise of Summer to come. It’s at this point I really start obsessing over the weather and watching the hedgerows and fruit trees that surround us for signs of blossom. Beekeepers’ social media feeds will be full of updates on their Spring, and I’ll track its movement through their posts from the South Coast of England all the way up here to Fife. Last year’s late snow created a Spring Honey disaster where the bees were unable to forage so no more frost or snow please. We’re done for this year thank you!

Eventually the day will arrive when the first Spring inspections will take place and I’ll nervously start lifting the roofs off each hive in turn to look for signs that all bodes well for the season ahead.

I may not see the Queen – they’re usually in a busy area of the hive, move fast and dislike the light but are there eggs and larvae?

A sure sign that she’s in there somewhere and fulfilling her duties. I’ll gently prize the sections of the hive apart and give the mesh floor a good clean with a stiff brush before putting everything back together, adding a little extra food if needed and updating my notes on my clever app which I’d be lost without.

And then I can breathe a little easier, sit for a moment and watch the new lambs in the field, listen to the first buzzing around the apiary as the bees become active on warmer days. But only for a moment, as I realise that the next milestone of the year, and when things really get exciting, is the natural phenomenon known as Swarm Season! Eeek!”

“Becoming a GP on the remote Scottish island of Hoy was something friends wanted to know more about. It’s a perfect place to reflect on a busy career to date, have new experiences, and maybe even take some great photos. Everyone has a creative streak, and so with encouragement and help getting the spelling right, I thought maybe I could publish something about my time on Hoy. Here, for family and friends, is the result of my labours, with the kind assistance of many patient wordsmiths. I do hope you enjoy reading about being a GP on Hoy during the Covid pandemic, and that I can transmit the peace, natural beauty, and community spirit that I found there. You might even feel like a visit yourself when you’re finished.”

Chapter Three “Jules and I bought Surgery View, in 1996. It has been a fabulous home for our family in Woodbridge, a lovely market town in Suffolk. It’s a sleepy rural county with a long, in places wild and empty, pebbled North Sea coastline. Woodbridge is on the banks of the Deben, a pretty tidal river bordered by unique salt marsh habitats. It is wonderfully comfortable, cosy and safe. It is very perfect and can be rather boring.

Hoy is wild, wet and windy. Stunted trees only grow in sheltered depressions in the undulating landscape, clinging to rock and thin soil. Atlantic rollers crash against the western shore, throwing up huge wave-smoothed boulders. In years gone by, they were blasted aside by dynamite each spring so that the fishermen of the remote Rackwick hamlet could get their boats out to sea. Every vista has three elements land, sea and sky. Each element is different every day, every hour.

Their combination is breath taking.

Sigmund Freud said “we are so made that we can derive intense enjoyment only from a contrast”, although I prefer an insight shared with me by a patient “life is defined by contrast”. What contrasts Julia and I now enjoy. We have an amazing commute, in our Volkswagen T4 camper, through Scotland as we trek to and frow to Hoy four times a year. The contrast has made me more appreciative of big Suffolk skies, warm summer evenings, so still that candles burn on the garden table, whilst we drink chilled white wine and chat with friends. An occasional mosquito and noise from a passing car are the only unwanted intrusion.

No wine for me on Hoy as I am on call 24/7. It is rarely candle still. This is a blessing as the breeze keeps the midges away.

The air is so extraordinarily fresh, with a delicious hint of seaweed at low tide. There is minimal sound or light pollution.

The summer seashore chorus of curlews and oystercatchers renders an alarm obsolete in July. Now in October, I step out to the voices of cattle and cockerels in the mornings.

Before the first COVID-19 shut down, fund raising for the lifeboat was central to community activity. The annual grandstand event was the Christmas RNLI tabletop sale in the YMCA hall. This event coincided with my first duty spell and also Julia being with me on Hoy. The new doctor and his wife became an additional attraction. I am bad with names at the best of time, so three weeks into the job this event was going to be a challenge.

I was certain at least of one name. Kevin Kirkpatrick, the lifeboat coxswain and our landlord. He stood in the centre of the hall engaging in easy conversations, whilst selling raffle tickets for the top prize, whiskey. A charming yet unassuming man, effortlessly commanding respect, who has impeccable, though tragic credentials for his role.

The lifeboat is a central thread of community life. South of Hoy, separating the island from mainland Scotland, is the Pentland Firth. It’s one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the northern hemisphere. It’s for good reason that Hoy lifeboat men have a proud heritage of heroic rescues.

On 17 March 1969 the maroon exploded over Brims to call the crew out to help the Liberian cargo ship Irene, which was adrift in a fierce storm. The TGB, a 47ft (14m) Watson-class vessel, constructed of wood, set off in conditions of near-zero visibility in a force 9 gale soon growing to a gusting force 10. The gale had been building for several days, creating mountainous seas.

The radio operator at Wick maintained constant contact with the coxswain Daniel Kirkpatrick and his crew. An acknowledgement was received from TGB an hour and a half after launching. SS Irene ran aground half a mile south of Grim Ness, on the South Ronaldsay coast. The steamship was on rocks, but intact. Battered by the wind, a shore rescue party using ropes began the torturous process of getting the ship’s company to safety, a procedure that would take them 4 hours.

The lightkeeper on Pentland Skerries rocks recalled seeing TGB’s stern light half a mile to the north-east, putting the lifeboat roughly at a point where the flood tide running down the east coast of South Ronaldsay, was crashing into the tide running east. This was the last sighting of the TGB and her crew: Daniel Kirkpatrick, Jimmy Johnston, Robert (Sodjer Bob) Johnston, Ray Kirkpatrick and James Swanson, Robbie Johnston and John (Jack) Kirkpatrick and Eric McFadyen Kirkwall’s lifeboat Grace Paterson Ritchie, could find no sign of their sister lifeboat. In such terrible conditions, Kirkwall’s coxswain reported to the Coastguard that there was virtually no hope of seeing TGB – there was no radar onboard lifeboats in those days – and the search was called off.

The following day the Thurso lifeboat spotted the upturned hull of TGB and towed her into Scrabster harbor. The crew’s bodies were still strapped in, apart from James Swanson who was never found.

Kevin Kirkpatrick married Karen Johnston, between them they had lost six family members in one tragic incident.

They are our lovely landlords, and a constant reminder of the wild and savage seas around us.

Hoy has one of the most intact World War II landscapes anywhere in the UK. Apparently this is courtesy of our farmers and their working relationship with the MOD. It is suggested that post-World War II the landowners on Hoy received quite significant grants to dismantle the military buildings on their land, but the job was never completed.

It’s not clear why this didn’t happen, but today these decaying buildings are daily reminder of the wartime importance of the island.

Driving home to my accommodation on my first day, with the on-call beeper weighing heavily on my waistband, I got completely lost. It was rather humiliating as there aren’t that many options or turnings.

Every road just looked the same in the car headlights, wind blown grass, barbedwire fences and surprised sheep. Gradually the geography has begun to make sense. I am aware of the tricky corners, the hollows where frost lingers ready to catch out the unwary driver. There are other challenges driving around the island, primarily the extraordinary views.

On several occasions I’ve nearly ended up in a ditch gazing at sunset, or a field full of lapwings feasting before they move further south for the winter.

With time I have learnt to recognise which locals need a little more road space. Some islanders have never passed a driving test and there seems to be no requirement for vehicles to pass their MOT. One of the few detractors from the wonderful views are the rusting vehicle wrecks, left in the field or behind the houses, when they come to the end of their extended island life.

On the hillside below Wee Fea hill looms an intimidating building that belongs in a John Le Carré spy novel. The building was the Base HQ and Communications Centre for Scapa Flow under Naval Command and named HMS Proserpine. It became operational in 1943 and accommodated over 200 Woman's Royal Naval Service staff to handle signals via telephone, teleprinter and radio including those from ships moored at buoys in Scapa Flow. Today’s empty shell was once a hive of wartime activity playing a vital part in the North Atlantic Fleet’s strategic effectiveness.

When I drive up to the north end the island, to the hamlet called Hoy, there is a short stretch of road where my gaze falls on the Naval cemetery. In this geometric space, the grass is tended all year around and the graves stand upright in smart lines. This cared for tribute to their shortened lives is such a contrast to the decaying remnants of their service era. I reflect on my grandfather who served in North Africa and France during the First World War and my father who was at sea on the Blue Funnel Line during the Second War. This place would have fascinated him. It makes me sad that he is not around to share maritime tales over one of his infamous ‘two-finger’ gins.

Navigation has been a real challenge on Hoy, particularly when responding to a call out at 4 o’clock in the morning, perhaps odd when you consider there is really only one main, single track road.

Pre COVID-19 there was a lot of moaning about the trials and tribulations of the London commuter life. Delayed trains, leaves on the line, no seats! I have been commuting to and from Hoy for my corporate induction, a program of mandatory training for all new NHS Orkney joiners, run at the Balfour hospital, in Kirkwall. The Hoy Head car ferry runs a regular service from Hoy, via Flotta to Houton on the mainland with a bus link to Kirkwall. Monday began as quite a wild day, which seemed to have little, impact on the secondary school children from Hoy who were making their weekly commute to their school on the mainland. The return trip was a different story. Winds of 40 -60 mph were forecasted at midday, and Orkney Ferries cancelled all their outer island sailings.

I kept a watchful eye on their website all day, really not wanting to spend an unscheduled night in Kirkwall. The buffeting of the bus should have alerted me to the maelstrom that awaited at the Houton ferry terminal. The tide was quite high, and I could see the wind lifting sheets of heavy spray off the water surface in the docking lights, and dumping it on the loading ramp. I have been told that the Hoy Head bridge instruments recorded a 69 knot (80 mph) gust as the ferry waited for us to embark.

I could barely keep my footing as I battled down the ramp, and then thought of the small lady with two shopping bags who I had passed. Turning back, to see her being blown against the leeward railing of the loading ramp I realised her Aldi shopping bag, now an effective sail, was about to take her over this barrier into the sea. With an arm around her shoulder and a determined, stooped struggle, we made it to the shelter of the car deck together, both helping the other to stay upright.

Julia was waiting for me at Lyness, in a warm dry car. The final challenge was to get the door open against the gale force wind to reach this sanctuary.

Driving was no fun in this weather. Would the Ayre be passable? This low isthmus between Hoy and Longhope is the only way home. Whilst we made cautionary progress through the rain and wind, an islander swept past in their car. Perhaps this was normal for February? Fortune was in our favour, and the north westerly was not throwing waves across the road. Julia dropped me off at the surgery to pick up the pager and car from my colleague Iain, as he was kindly covering me during the day whilst I was off island.

Remote island life forces you to become a weather watcher, because of the impact it has on simple every-day activities.

Storm Clara and Dennis during February 2020, have called for strategic parking, get it wrong and it’s almost impossible to open the car door, alternatively it will be ripped out of your hand and taken off the hinges. Tides and wind can combine to make some road impassable, turning Walls into an island again as waves crash over the Ayre, our link with the rest of Hoy. The odd bit of storm debris is no surprise, although I have never encountered deep layers of seaweed thrown onto the road, and barbed wire fences ribboned with kelp, as the locals tell me happens during the heaviest weather.”

“More than ever during these past two very strange years, I, like many people, have found great comfort in the continuing rhythms of nature. There is such reassurance in the recurring seasons, the waxing and waning of the moon, the crashing waves. Even now, as the snow melts from the mountain tops into cascading rivers, my local woodland is waking up. Spring buds surprise us after the bare branches of winter and the wild crocuses optimistically pop their heads up after hibernation.

I am based in Inverness and spend most mornings tramping with my 2 enthusiastic spaniels, in nearby woodland or beaches, or on the beautiful Ness islands that are just 5 minutes’ walk away from home. I always carry a tiny sketchbook in my pocket and will stop for 5 or 10 minutes (or however long the spaniels will hang around!) to do a quick sketch. Many of these sketches end up in the bin, but I find that the act itself helps imprint the moment on my memory and helps me ground myself for the day ahead.

Other sketches will serve as a springboard for larger works on canvas. Some days I leave the spaniels behind and take easel and canvas, and paint en plein air, doing battle with the elements. These paintings are often less perfect but much more spontaneous in a way that’s difficult to achieve in the studio.

In my painting I’m more interested in the atmosphere and the fast changing light and weather than in accurate details of the landscape. That breath-taking moment when the sun breaks through between rain showers and the light kisses the sea, or when the forest momentarily becomes a cathedral and I’m moved to worship its creator.

Glaswegian by birth, I will always be a Glasgow lass at heart. I have been fortunate enough to travel fairly extensively and have lived for longer periods of time in other parts of the world, (Nazareth, Sydney Australia, Kathmandu, Tansen Nepal) each very beautiful in its own right, but Scotland has always been a magnet drawing me back home. Having now been in Inverness for almost 18 years I have very much adopted the Highlands as my home.

I enjoy all that city life has to offer but love that it’s surrounded on all sides by spectacularly beautiful and very varied scenery, and within easy reach of the ferry to the magic of the Outer Hebrides. When we first arrived here with young children I did wonder if the winters may be miserable but in fact I have found that the opposite is true.

With the right clothing, there is no bad weather, and the shorter days are a great excuse for cosy fireside evenings with a cup of mulled wine.

My husband Ken is a keen outdoorsman and has, over the years, persevered in making a hill walker, cyclist, and most recently, sea kayaker out of me. I’m no great water babe but I do love being able to get to otherwise inaccessible places by kayak. The kayaks are surprisingly roomy, and we can take everything we need to camp on deserted islands off the north west coast, often with pristine white beaches and always with curious seals. Of course my painting gear has priority in the hatches of the kayaks!

Back in Inverness, I have a WASPS (waspsstudios.org. uk) studio at Inverness creative academy, which is a fairly new and thriving hub for many artists and makers.

It is good to have the support of other artists with very different perspectives and ideas in the creative soup! I often work in collaboration with 3 other landscape artists (art4highlands), often exhibiting together as our painting styles and strengths complement each other’s.

Two of my adult children live in Edinburgh but are involved in the trad music scene which is very vibrant in the highlands.

Nothing lifts the heart more than a room full of young people spontaneously Ceilidh dancing at a gig, wildly throwing each other around to music which has been passed down through generations and is being expertly and enthusiastically played by equally young bands. There are also a few pubs in Inverness that frequently hold sessions, so you can wander in off the street and be treated to spontaneous music by expert musicians.

You can even join in if you bring an instrument! There are also many music festivals locally which are all-age family events. I recently had a satisfying project that combined my love for painting the Scottish landscape with my support for the trad music scene when I was asked by the band Hò-Rò to do a painting of the Isle of Eigg for their latest album cover.

At the moment I’m working towards my next solo exhibition in May which will be in Lark’s gallery (larksgallery. com) which is situated in Ballater in the heart of Royal Deeside. Please visit!”

“And it all starts again, the beginning of the creative process. New ideas must be explored with a wholehearted return to the canvas where my subconsciousness is allowed to unfold. I consider mark-making to be my personal visual language which I have developed over the years. I look forward to generating new ‘words and messages’ for the viewer, it is distinctly recognisable and the way I respond to the Scottish landscape around me.

Clare Blois is an award-winning Scottish oil painter who is known for her bold expressive approach to the landscapes and seascapes of the Highlands. The islands of the Hebrides are particularly special to Clare - Harris and Lewis have endless sandy beaches and turquoise waters with a stunning emptiness, an artist’s dream. Water rushes down the hills to the rocks below, and the skies can change in a moment from lapis blue to green-grey storm clouds.

Realising the satisfaction of fulfilling new projects and looking forward to exciting collaborations are all part of what this year has to offer.

Exhibiting can be seen as the culmination of months of intense creativity, or also, the origination of a new direction in an artist’s progression. That is why I find it essential to put events in the calendar, they become challenges and incentives, which build momentum and fire adrenalin, which in turn, rewards me with memorable pieces and innovative techniques.

I am especially looking forward to the Borders Art Fair at the end of March 2022, which takes place in the charming town of Kelso, south of Edinburgh alongside my studio colleague, who I originally met in her role as Gallerist at The Tore Art Gallery. We are, of course, delighted to have the chance to showcase to Scotland and the world what we have been working on over the recent months.

“Before I became an artist, my work in the hospitality business took me to some of the most beautiful houses and estates in the Scottish Highlands and islands. The wild landscapes, remote, dramatic, and touched only by the elements and the seasons, instilled in me a lasting fascination and excitement which has been a constant inspiration to my painting,” explains Blois.

This summer I returned to the Isle of Skye for a month-long artist residency. I went out every day with sketchbooks and small canvasses gathering material for larger paintings that were worked on in the studio. I am often asked how long a painting takes to do and cannot answer this question! They can be completed in a single day of energy and momentum, or I can return to them multiple times over a period of months or even years – this is the joy of oil paint, which I love also for its rich and luscious texture and infinite colour possibilities.

Clare’s paintings are expressive with elements of abstraction, interpretations rather than representations. They are about a feeling towards a place or weather on that day and she enjoys others relating the painting to their own experience.

I find that solitude “en plein air” is an essential part of my artist practice, and this is balanced by also being part of a vibrant studio community at WASPS in Inverness. We all gain so much from interaction with other artists and have a lot of fun too!

We have planned to cover every cm of the exhibition space, using an unconventional cereal box replica, scaled down to work out the dimensions and quantities needed for the show. Not all artists would work to such exacting calculations, but somehow this methodical approach, is the start of a rather unmethodological execution of a new body of work from us both.

We look forward to exhibiting some larger paintings which hope to capture unique essential moments of our ongoing Highland exploration.”

“All the seasons provide their own wonderful and unique creative inspiration, however Spring is the season which truly re-ignites our creativity. As the landscape around us slowly comes back to life, and we relish the promise of longer days, more light and refreshing colours, the blooming of Spring in Scotland is quite literalCaron Ironside ly, a breath of fresh air.

Here in Perthshire, the creative members of Perthshire Artisans find plenty of Springtime inspiration from which to develop new work and for some, the theme of renewal, new beginnings and starting over, is at the very core of their practice. The art of re-working different materials into new and exquisite pieces of work is an artform in itself. Creative upcycling is a challenging and fun way to work. It comes with set boundaries, such as the availability and quantity of a particular material yet also encourages creative thinking. Still by its very nature, the result is often unique, innovative and sometimes quirky. It can be both functional or purely decorative and is certainly not compromised by a past life and re-invention for a new beginning.

Many of the Artisans work from their home-based studios, producing one off pieces or small batch productions, so working resourcefully and sustainably comes with the territory.

Textile Designers Izzy Gretton & Cornelia Weinmann both create beautifully handmade accessories and clothing. Aberfeldy based Izzy weaves original and quirky woollen hats, scarves and snoods from yarn salvaged from many of the now closed local mills. Cornelia, based near Blairgowrie, makes classic style coats and tops combining quality linen and unusual embellishments created from rescued fabrics. Her Japanese Knot Bags are a popular product, offering an alternative gift-wrapping solution which will last and last.

Wood is also a popular reclaimed material and is creatively re-used by three Perthshire Artisans. Beth McDowall works as The TreeCycler near Innerpeffray, creating wall art, clock and lamps from wooden bowls and old tools such as discarded apprentice carpenters’ lasts. Nearby in Crieff, Nigel Laye enjoys working with relinquished whisky barrels and re-using the individual staves making oneoff coat hooks and bottle stands. And if you love using wooden kitchenware, Rebuen Els from Blairgowrie, has a striking collection of chopping boards, serving paddles and smaller items, ensuring every piece of wood is crafted into a finished piece with minimal wastage.

Mosaic Artist Katy Galbraith, near Comrie, loves the challenge of re-using unwanted crockery, glass and various bits and bobs to make mosaics of all sizes, from a small garden wall hanging to large scale commissioned works, often incorporating much loved pieces of china making for a very personal design, with its own story to tell.

“Springtime in Scotland is probably my favourite time of year, but then I say that about every new season we are about to enter into. Scottish winters can seem to drag on, with short days and long evenings spent huddled indoors keeping warm.

I prefer to work in daylight, so there aren’t many working hours during the darkest winter days. I have never been a Plein Air painter; the weather is either too cold, too hot, too windy, too wet, or too many insects. I get my inspiration and information outdoors, do a series of sketches and a few photographs as an aide memoir and head back to the comfort and warmth of my studio. At the start of lockdown in 2019, I thought, wrongly, that it wouldn’t affect me too much because I was so used to working indoors by myself.

I soon realised that I do actually go out walking in the countryside and getting inspiration from our gorgeous Perthshire scenery quite often and I really missed it.

I have always been fascinated with the sky, a stormy one being my favourite. As a child I spent many hours studying clouds and trying to make pictures before they changed shape and were gone forever. A dark and threatening purple sky above a field of bright yellow oilseed rape is absolutely stunning. That feeling of new life bursting through the soil, from those first brave wee snowdrops pushing themselves up through snow and ice, followed closely by their other spring chums, promising a fresh new start.

It seems to me that our lovely clean Scottish air smells so fresh in Springtime it is almost as if it has been newly washed. The leaves as they unfold are a special vibrant green that disappears after a couple of weeks, and they fade into their more mature shades until Autumn.

I grew up by the sea and my favourite places tend to be located by water, Crinan, Plockton, Portsoy, Crovie, to name but a few. There is something magical about the interaction between the sky and water. It is the same place every day, but the scene is constantly changing depending on the weather. In my quirky landscapes, the sky could be aubergine with copper coloured clouds, or a unrealistic turquoise, it is a mood thing to be honest. I recently finished an oil painting of a seagull and the water in the shoreline was 22 carat gold leaf. I also paint more traditional Scottish landscapes, usually with a stormy sky. I am being drawn more and more towards painting water and think that might be my next phase, but I won’t know that until I am sat in front of my easel.

“Late April last year I took an unprecedented two weeks' holiday for our annual lambing.

Beforehand, Himself trotted out one of those classic farming phrases that had hitherto passed me by: get fit to lamb; don't lamb to get fit.

Ah well, too late to worry about that. How hard could it be....?”

“Our ewes, scanned in February and graded accordingly, were now patiently grazing in various parks and fields. Those with twins in them had had their superior fertility rewarded with prime antenatal accommodation in the shelter of the woods (freedom of shore included). They, I was informed, were my absolute priority, to be checked every few hours.

Right-o, I glibly responded, keen to begin, already preparing my speech for the 2021 Lambing Hero award...

The woods are a favourite place of mine. Stretching from the road that intersects the croft all the way down to the shore, predominantly hazel, interspersed with oak and one spectacular larch which towers over a secluded two-room stone ruin, no roof but with fireplace, lintel, and window still evident. Streams can, depending on rainfall, be full, fast and noisy; waterfalls and pools criss-crossed with wind-blown trees, dappled in spring sunshine. A special place, its restorative powers almost magical, and once descended you emerge onto the shore where the view across the Sound of Sleat to the mainland is postcard-worthy - a panorama of the West Coast's finest: Glenelg; Sandaig Island; the snowcapped peak of Beinn Sgritheall; Loch Hourn with the tiny hamlet of Corran (birthplace of my beloved collie, Gryff) and the Knoydart hills including Ladhar Bheinn.

Nearer to hand Isle Ornsay and Eilean Iarmain.

New growth offers these heavily pregnant ewes sustenance - a month from now bluebells will carpet the ground but the warm-up acts are evident: bright yellow Lesser Celandine and delicate white Wood Anemone.

The water gurgles and chases, birds chitter and chatter, branches rustle and only occasionally an engine - car or boat - intrudes.

“He's alive, but barely. Reuniting him with his family won't save him; time to intervene.”

Checking ewes in a field every few hours is one thing, in steeply sloping woods, quite another! As I learn that traversing them is neither time-efficient nor safe, a zig-zagging up-and-down route is established. In a field the sheep are, well, visible. Not so here: my life becomes a 15 mile assault course each day, my diary captured the challenges: "They provide very few hints to their whereabouts but will calmly lie there watching you stumble and trip your way up and down from road to shore and back again only to lazily get up and move to another spot in preparation for the next round of checks. I'm having to climb like a mountain goat but with all the style of a harrumphing hippo. Getting fitter though!" Soon, it becomes, in my head at least, a battle, a campaign: my path like one of those maze puzzles where the sheep is the treasure at the centre.

But then, a lamb! Two! A set of twins. And another.

And more still. The joy, the wonder of every new life.

Watching them lie in the sunshine, drunk of their mothers' milk, growing stronger every day and discovering the springs in their legs. Jump. Bound. Tear around.

On a routine round though, another of those old farming phrases, always so true, comes to mind: “where there's livestock, there's dead stock". Heading homeward for a cuppa, I see a slumped, white bundle at the foot of a tree. Fearing the worst, I approach, scanning the area for mother and sibling. He's alive, but barely. Reuniting him with his family won't save him; time to intervene. I scoop him up and bundle him inside my jacket to begin the warming process, rescue plan activated: a straw bed, heat lamp, tube-feeding to get nutrients inside him. I used to be terrified of tube-feeding, knowing that a wrongly inserted tube will flood the lungs and cause death by drowning. It's happened to me once and is horrible but if you don't try these lambs will perish. Thankfully, this wee guy has enough verve and fight. Eventually, he is successfully reunited with mum and sister. Others aren't so lucky and end up as pests, sorry, pets. Fun and entertaining for a while, but hard work!

Constant vigilance, knowing when to intervene and graft - the three essentials of lambing.

The Lambing Hero award didn't materialise, but I didn’t mind; getting through lambing with minimal losses was enough.

Linda Mellor chats with Elaine Jamieson, Scotland’s Country Lady Cook, about childhood, and discovering her path and creating her own business underpinned by her love of Scotland, the outdoors and people.

Where were you born and brought up, tell us about your childhood?

“Brought up in Keith, where we all knew our neighbours, where doors were never locked, and the kettle and a friendly ear were ever present. I was the middle child. As I’m sure many of you know that’s not the easiest position to hold, we are not the biggest or cleverest nor are we the cutest and most precious. But I had a talent, a wonderful thing, everyone listened when I start to sing. The daughter of a Gordon Highlander, a path of discipline was set out before me ‘Bydand’ was on repeat in our house! This coupled with a mother’s love was the foundation for a life I am now incredibly grateful for and the reason I have weathered many a storm and stand stronger here today. My childhood was no different to others, a mix of good times and the not so great.

The good times mostly involved dressing up, music, good food and fireside or a stage with my accordion! (if I was lucky) the not so good, featured many hospital visits to mum and Dad enjoying too much golden stuff at the fireside. Yet ironically in their own way they also contained fun and happy times and an invaluable wealth of knowledge I was only to realise much later in life. As I grew up and was distracted by boys, the tools which had served me well took a back seat, my music was put in the attic.”

How has Scotland inspired your working life?

“Working life had been 30 years shackled to the restraints of industrial kitchens in systems I did not always agree with. The fire in my belly had always been there, so with a wealth of experience in kitchens under my belt I set forth to feed people my way, with a love pure and simple: no foams, drizzles nor tricky boxes I didn’t agree with, the universe laid before me a new path which took me around Scotland’s Highland and Islands. It was more of a road trip, a holiday, an adventure where I fell deeper in love with my life, Scotland’s people, and the incredible breath-taking beauty of the places I got to visit. It had been here all along, had I been asleep at the wheel of my own life?

After bumbling along for a few years feeding many a Fishing and Shoot party, Weddings and Celebrations of all sorts in Scotland’s castles, estates, and country homes, I decided this was too good not to share and so I went about nurturing a seed sewn years earlier.”

How did you take action and bring your plan to life?

“Despite being somewhat of a perfectionist, I have come to realise I would wait forever for that to happen in order to be ready. With technology being my biggest obstacle, I set about creating a website to inform the world I was serious and no longer bumbling, Queen Bee had woken up!

And, just as it all came together, the next hurdle appeared before me. Lockdown. Undeterred by this mere challenge my love was well and truly nurtured and ready, so Andersons was born on February 14th, 2021.

What part do Scotland’s elements play?

Travelling along Scotland’s wee off-grid roads I was always drawn to her water’s edge, I have a strong connection to all the elements and find water to be a great healer, something I am very passionate about. I believe we can heal ourselves. Isn’t that what we did long ago? My interest in healing and energy work led me to learn Reiki and become a Reiki practitioner something I absolutely love to give myself and others who may feel drawn. The power of this cannot be underestimated and I would urge anyone struggling in these times to gift themselves a session.”

What’s the story behind the name?

“My inspiration for Andersons came from my Dad’s name and also from my mum’s childhood: she spent her third birthday cuddled up with Paddy, her wire-haired fox terrier, in the Anderson air raid shelter at the bottom of their garden in Glasgow. A story she retold often.

Andersons has been set up with from the heart, and built on my desire to listen around the kitchen table as I cooked.

This gave me an understanding as to what was really needed, it was more than a cook, it was a counsellor, a confidant, a nanny, an entertainer, a personal shopper, it was a good friend and more. I came to realise the art of communication and conversation is a somewhat dying one, this, to me, is a given and your time is truly a great gift.”

What do you offer?

“A picnic lunch on the hill, corporate event, granny’s birthday, Stag and Hen dos, whether you have just arrived into the world or are just leaving, we will take great care of your celebration with good food and friendship. We can find your perfect location and venue whether that is a Castle or a bothy up the glen, a cliff top dinner date or a secluded hillside, you name it we will find it. Realizing I wouldn’t be able to be in the kitchen full time and develop a business I addressed the issue of staff and have grown a wee group of my as/when required team. They have a wealth of talent and knowledge to bring to your table and are all part of the Andersons family.”

Music plays a part in your working life, doesn’t it?

“Yes, music plays a big part, and has always featured in my kitchens. I am all about bringing that life into each house and venue. Taking along my box and providing an impromptu session has been a great hit while allowing me to share my talents and help that side of me grow too.”

Is Spring an eventful time of year for you?

“Spring is a busy time for me, preparing and delivering fishing picnics along the River Spey, and week-long full catering service around the Highlands and Islands. The laden tables at the end of day, in houses of bygone eras, where you can almost hear the sheer delight of our ancestors, that these incredible old houses are once again ringing with the sound of music, love, and laughter. The business is growing fast, and I continue to keep my eyes out for our great talented unsung heroes, these are the ones who interest me. Should that be you, please pick up the phone and share your talent.”

Your favourite ingredients?

“Gathering family around a table or fireside sharing simple food, good conversation and music. These are my favourite ingredients.”

David’s Daily Photo Challenge David Miller needed a new challenge so he combined his love of photography with nature into a 365 photo-a-day marathon

“I am a retired fire-fighter now living with my wife in the Cairngorms National Park up in the hills above Blair Atholl, in a small hamlet of seven houses. There are no street lights, only a single track road, and a dream wildlife haven with views to die for. Heaven indeed.

During lockdown over the Christmas period of 2020, I started wondering what a good exercise would be to keep me going during these bleak times. My biggest love of life is, of course, my wife, followed by wildlife and photography. The first of these is, of course, no problem, for after 53 years of marriage, we know each other inside out and even during the lockdown that remained as solid as ever. My challenge would have to be something that involved the next two loves in my life. Now, I already had a blog up and running and thought that as a New Year resolution maybe I could bring that into the equation. I decided to take a different photograph everyday of a different subject, trying not to repeat any scene, flower, animal, bird, or event twice throughout the year.

It certainly was a challenge, but, overall, with just a few, hopefully, unnoticed exceptions, I think I achieved that. December started off as the hardest month as I had covered most subjects. But if you look at my blog you will see I was rescued by a trip to New York to visit my son and his wife who live there.

Isn’t it strange that a person, who can love country living and wildlife so much, but can also enjoy a bit of city life every now and then.

My favourite location in Spring is some fifty miles from home on the River Lochay above Killin in Stirlingshire. The exact spot is above the power station where a rock juts out into the river. One spring I sat there having got up early, I recall there was a bit of a chill in the air. As I sat there enjoying the moment and taking in my surroundings I noticed all the buds were forming on the trees, it was a really lovely spring scene. Suddenly something caught my eye, it was an Otter taking a drink, and to my surprise, it was swiftly followed by a Roe Deer and to top it all I spotted a Spring run Salmon swimming in the Loch. I couldn’t believe what I’d just witnessed, and, of course, my big regret is not having my camera with me to record the event. However, I have a plan to return one day, I’ll get up extra early (for a change!) with my camera in hand and pray the magic can be revived.”

Spring Fishing Lesson

By Alan Scott “Please don’t read this if you are looking to read about the exploits of an expert angler.

I’m far from that. In fact, I confess, I grew up in a family of golfers who took their golf seriously and so I spent much of my childhood on golf courses. My dad used to say something similar to my school report, ‘could try harder’ but he did succeed with my youngest brother who now plays off scratch but has for a lot of his life had a handicap of plus 2. I did fish the burns around the town as I grew up with my friends, but our catch rates were not great. Then I was introduced to fly fishing at the ripe old age of 20.

Last spring and summer, I spent a lot of time fishing with Barrie. In childhood, Barrie spent lots of time with his uncle with him showing him how to fish the rivers and burns around our wee town.

I hadn’t seen Barrie in years but met him over the fence last spring, as his daughter and grand children live next door. He was eager to speak about fishing as he was keen to get back into it. He is the opposite of me, he has hardly picked up a rod since his early 20’s.

We have been out most weekends since then, and, despite Barrie having antiquated 40 plus year old fibre glass rod, he has consistently out fished me. With some top fish caught, he really has an inbuilt natural understanding of fish.

One day I nearly out fished Barrie. We fished the Hoddom Castle stretch of the Annan in the spring armed with some fantastic dry flies tied by Scott Rutherford who runs guiding days on the Annan with Michael Fearns who works with the Annan District Salmon Fishery Board. I had already caught a cracking out of season Grayling on a dry probably around the 2.5lb mark. After lunch, I’d worked my way well down the beat and had retied my cast due to a bit of a fankle.

When I retied my cast I instinctively knew that my knot wasn’t right but I was desperate to get my fly over the top of a big brown trout that was rising consistently to flies in the run close to the opposite bank.

After casting the fly over it a few times a large 3lb-ish trout jumped and headed downstream at pace. Then my line went slack without me putting any pressure on it. I looked at the cast, the lower part of the cast had parted at the offending knot. Note to self: you knew the knot was substandard why didn’t you just retie it *****?

So the duffer does it again.

So instead of being the angling trooper I usually am fishing on beyond the allocated time (agreed with my good lady) with half an hours plus of last casts and second last casts. I got the camera out and took some shots of Barrie with his antiquated rod.

I’ve added the photo into a wee project I have of angling portraits. Barrie out fished me once again with a number of good Annan Trout up to a pound and half.

My knot tying has improved greatly since.”

“It is March on the River Helmsdale at Salscraggie, but far more years ago than I can remember. We were with Borrobol ghillie Johnnie Hardy: on one fine day in springtime… we even put the rods down, to curl on Baddy Wood - the river was frozen bank to bank.

Amazingly, salmon DO get caught. And nowadays almost all are released to continue their journey upstream, eventually to their natal streams and feeder burns well beyond the lochs.

‘When the frogs cross the road, the salmon will run the falls at Kildonan.’ So they say.”

St Monans’s white gold – The revival of the sea salt industry

“Sea salt was an important industry in Scotland for centuries. In Fife, sea salt production can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The gentle shelving Fife coastline along with the locally mined coal and a thriving market for salt made Fife perfect for its production. Its heydays were from the 16th-19th centuries thereafter it went into decline and ended in 1946 with the closure of the salt pans at Limelkilns. Commercially salt was used for curing and preserving fish, meat, vegetables, and fruit. It was used in curing hides, as a flux for glass making and in glazes for pottery. Salt was the only bulk food-preservative available until the 19th century when canning food was developed. The manufacture of salt along the Fife coast built an economy that shaped the urban landscape, and its remains can be seen to this day.

“Sea salt is made by the evaporation of seawater. In warmer climates this is done by the sun, but in Scotland it was by heating seawater using coal.

Seawater was collected or pumped into shallow tanks known as salt pans. Any impurities settled out and were removed. Coal fires were lit underneath, and the saltwater evaporated leaving salt crystals behind.

The Fife coast had a plentiful supply of coal. The first area in Scotland where coal was worked was Blairadam, near Kelty in Fife in the 13th century. Coal was key to making salt. Many of the local coal mining companies became involved in making salt. The expansion of coal production was linked to the commercial development of salt pans in Fife from the mid-16th century. To produce one ton of salt, eight tons of coal was required.

St Monans is no stranger to salt making. Along with coal mining, salt making around the St Monans area has been practiced since the Middle Ages. Prominent in the coal and salt industry surrounding St Monans was Sir John Anstruther of Elie House. He was a successful Scottish politician and industrialist. On the easterly edge of St Monans towards Pittenweem sits the remains of the St Philips Saltworks. It consists of nine panhouses and a windmill pump that pumped seawater from tidally fed reservoirs to the salt pans. It was set up by the Newark Coal & Saltwork Company founded in 1771 by Sir John Anstruther and his brother-in-law Robert Fall a wealthy Dunbar merchant.

For 19 years until 1790 the saltworks flourished, after which It continued to operate at a reduced scale and finally stopped producing salt in 1803 and was abandoned.

It was a similar story for other saltworks in Scotland. The repeal of salt duty in 1825 allowed cheaper Rock Salt imported from Europe to flood the market. Salt mines opened in England and foreign exports in salt declined.

Since the end of the 1980’s the windmill was restored and during the 1990s various archaeological excavations took place on the remains of the panhouses. A new coastal path was established, and the area remains today as a reminder of rural Fife’s industrial past.

From his roots in the small coastal fishing village of St Monans to the high corporate finance working life of London city and living and working in the highlands and islands of Scotland, Darren Peattie’s dream of returning to his roots and setting up a business with a connection to the sea is being fulfilled.

Darren’s connection to salt and St Monans is a long one.

His ancestors were involved in the fishing and shipbuilding industries and indirectly with the St Philips Salt Works.

Like many Scots, me included, it was only when you leave where you have grown up that you realise Scotland is the country where you are most happy. St Monans and the East Neuk of Fife is where Darren’s heart is. I asked Darren how he connects to Scotland on a personal level outside of his business interests. “I feel very proud to be Scottish.

It’s in my blood. I feel fortunate for all we have in Scotland. It’s not entirely perfect but in my 38 years living here I can see that Scotland is moving forward. We have a rich heritage so completely a deserve a rich future. I am a passionate follower of Independence and would love to see Scotland Independent so we can shape our own future. Scotland is my country, my home and will be where I say farewell as I take my last breath. I have travelled all over the world but the heart beats best when my feet are on Scottish Soil”.

Happy to be back in the East Neuk of Fife, Darren started thinking about business opportunities. In 2019, while on a walk with his wife, Mhairi and two daughters, Esme, and Eliza, along the Fife coastal path from St Monans, passing the ruins of the salt pans and restored windmill pump, an idea was formed in Darren’s head. That idea was to bring salt harvesting back to St Monans and East Neuk Salt Co. Ltd. was born.

Making the heritage of a past local industry long forgotten the aim for a successful future was the goal for Darren and his wife. To produce high end quality sea salt, collaborate with local businesses, put St Monans back on the map, do something for the community by building a heritage education centre, a visitor attraction and provide much needed local long term employment opportunities.

To fulfil these goals takes hard work and determination of which Darren and his wife have an abundance.

Raising finance from his own savings along with a Crowdfunder, support from the local community and working closely with Business Gateway Fife who provide expert help and assistance, a business plan was developed. Successful applications to various government and European grants were achieved.

With branding, marketing, and packaging in place all Darren had to do was to harvest the salt and find premises to process it. Darren also had to find out if the local seawater around St Monans was suitable for salt harvesting and that he had the relevant permits to collect it. This involved Marine Scotland and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). You need to take more than 10,000m³ a day before you need a licence from SEPA to remove seawater. East Neuk Salt Co. only require 2.5m³ (550 gallons) a day. Seawater quality and testing was done by St Andrews University and the best quality Grade A seawater was found a few miles west along the coast at Elie.

Reaching out to artisan sea salt makers for help and advice Darren struck up a great relationship with Achill Island Sea Salt in Co. Mayo, Ireland who harvest sea salt using methods and equipment similar to what East Neuk Salt Co. had in mind. Sourcing equipment from all over Europe, a business plan, and finances in place Darren was good to go.

Finding suitable premises locally for making salt was not easy.

Darren required a tall enough building to house all the equipment and wanted to locate in St Monans or close by. As luck had it in the centre of St Monans were the old premises and yard of the Bass Rock Oil Company. Using local tradesmen, a new roof and some conversion work the building was ready for the installation of the equipment. A few months later the equipment was installed, and East Neuk Salt Co. was ready to make its first batch of sea salt.

It takes 40 hours to make a batch of sea salt. The seawater is collected at source through a submersible pump into suitable containers. The seawater is tested regularly to ensure it meets the recommended quality. At the factory it is passed through three filters of less than hair thickness thin to remove any impurities and microplastics and then into a 2,500-litre vacuum evaporator. Simply by lowering the container’s internal pressure below atmospheric pressure it is possible to boil the liquid contained at a low temperature. A sleeve around the vacuum evaporator heated by gas brings the saltwater to a temperature of 45ºC (113ºF) slowly turning it to a brine. The steam is collected as distilled water in an adjacent tank.

It then goes into crystalliser beds where heated from below, pyramid shaped salt flakes will form on the surface and eventually will grow and fall to the bottom. Using a spade shaped strainer, the salt crystals are removed from the brine and spread out to dry. Once dry you have the finished East Neuk Salt Co. “saltpan-tastic” sea salt. It is then packaged into sealed pouches ready for sale and distribution. The first batch of salt was harvested in October 2021 and East Neuk Salt Co. produces around two tons of sea salt per month. East Neuk Salt Co. aim to be a zero-waste business. By products of sea salt making include 900 litres of distilled water per day and a magnesium concentrate. The distilled water is used in gin making, to make ice, drinking water and in pharmaceuticals.

The manganese concentrate has uses in agriculture and Darren has a local farmer willing to take the manganese concentrate to put on his fields.

Darren’s sea salt has been well received by the food sector and high-end Michelin Star level chefs and restaurants locally and throughout Scotland. I am a huge fan of salt. My decades at sea and under it as a diver, I have tasted salt from most of the oceans of the world in both liquid and crystal forms. I sampled East Neuk Salt and wow! It brought back memories of my head breaking the surface after a dive in the waters of the Forth and taking the odd mouthful of seawater from wave slap. It is a clean fresh salty taste. I know this sounds crazy, but I would do liquid shots of Darren’s salt.

I hope a salt infused vodka is on the cards.

Other product collaborations in the pipeline using his salt, are crips, popcorn, and soap. East Neuk Salt Co. is a flourishing business with its heart firmly set in the local community and drawing on the heritage of village and its coastal setting. Darren “wants to build something for the community” and “bring our heritage back.” Sea salt making in Fife and in Scotland was important and our links to it should not be forgotten.

I spent most of a morning with Darren and Mhairi. Within minutes of talking to Darren he oozes great passion for the salt, its manufacture, and the local heritage. A steady stream of customers and visitors popped in to purchase salt and to hear the East Neuk Salt Co. story. As heat is part of the process of salt making the building was lovely and warm with a pleasant saltiness in the air. I could imagine that over 220 years ago the coal fired hot and smoky saltpans were not as pleasant.

East Neuk Salt Co. have a fantastic product and story. I wish Darren, Mhairi, and East Neuk Salt Co. all the success for the future. The sea salt is wonderful and his vision for his business and the community is commendable. Starting a new business is hard enough but to do this through a Covid pandemic shows great commitment and determination. A plus from Covid and the climate threat is certainly the fact that people are starting to look more locally for produce, and to use local businesses and suppliers.

This wind shaped tree is close to St Blane’s Church on the south end of the Isle of Bute.

St Blane’s Church has its roots in a monastery created on the Isle of Bute around AD 500. The site was the home of St Blane, ‘fair Blaan of Ceen Garad (Kingarth)’ and, it is claimed, he may have been buried there on his death.

The buildings at St Blane’s belong to two periods: an early Christian monastery, deserted during the Viking raids around AD 790, and, secondly, a later parish church, built in the 1100s and in use until the Protestant Reformation of 1560.

There are many ruins on the site, including numerous foundations of circular buildings, stonewalls, a well and a stone base that would have once supported a cross.

“We have recently downsized to what had previously been a much-loved family holiday cottage on loch Rannoch.

This has resulted in spending far more time in the central Perthshire Highlands in winter and allowed more winter walking and I am delighted to say some ski touring in the local hills.

As a family we have always been keen skiers going to the Alps every year particularly to Wengen in the Jungfrau region and the Bernese Oberland. Apart from great downhill skiing on the Wengen and Murren slopes it is renowned for some wonderful ski touring – much of this area being discovered and pioneered by Arnold Lunn in the early 1900’s. Over the years we have done many of the Jungfrau glacier and off-piste ski runs and become friends with some of the characterful local guides – always going for “mountaineering” rather than “skiing” experienced guides.

This in turn has led to taking any opportunity one can to ski tour in Scotland though with shorter and far less reliable snow and winter conditions here this has sadly been limited.

Despite this in the last few years we have been lucky and managed to grab and get in some days ski touring in some of the nearby Rannoch hills. This has been especially appreciated and welcome during the Covid pandemic as a much-needed blast of alpine air and exercise.

My fellow gallant companion on these expeditions is Leo Barclay – Leo is an energetic 81 year old and I am the youngster at 77. We are often joined thankfully by Richard, Leo’s son, and his granddaughter Emilia both keen skiers and always welcome to keep an eye on us old boys.

Our two yellow Labradors - Rowan and Samson - regularly come along as well to join in and watch the antics of their owners.

The Barclays own the Innerhadden Estate which encompasses Meall Garbh and much of the Carn Mairg group of hills and this is where much of our ski touring has been done. We also had a memorable day on Schiehallion last year with a ski ascent on its western ridge.

For the uninitiated to ski touring the routine and nature of the day tends to be a long and steady skinning up your chosen hill on skis then taking the skins off at the top before a far shorter but importantly exhilarating downhill run. The ideal is to find longer ridge lines. Our Schiehallion day exploit for example was the best part of a ninety minute skin up for a memorable but merely 5 minute ski down!

Although I have had some wonderful ski touring experiences in the Alps I still rate some of our days skiing in the Highlands “back country” just as memorable. Nothing can beat a cold frosty though preferably for us old chaps, sunny day, with Spring crisp snow conditions crunching as you tramp on gamely up the hill - a brief turn round at the top while you take your skins off and adjust the ski bindings before the thrill of skiing down uncharted slopes.

On our Schiehallion trip in February last year the wind chill on the top was we reckon –14c so not a time to hang around.

On top of this and unlike most of the often popular Alpine glacier touring routes in the Scottish Highlands you are almost guaranteed to have the hill to yourselves which is part of the wild uplifting experience.

My main concern is whether we will continue to get the sort of cold winter snow conditions to make ski touring possible in future. I have a copy of the inspirational SMC’s Ski Mountaineering Club Guide edited by Donald Bennet and Bill Wallace and published in 1987. This captures the great snow and ski conditions that prevailed in Scotland in years gone by – sadly, I don’t think we will ever experience the winter snowscapes featured in this guide again but hopefully we will still get some short spells of good snow to get us donning our ski touring gear again and heading up the hill.”

“With spring upon us it is back to normal service as usual down at the fire station. Every season we get a new action plan pertinent to that particular time of year, spring as usual is seen as the season for wildfires as gardens are being cleaned up with leaves and branches being burnt.

The heater and moorland burning season is also here and along with deliberate fire setting and fly tipping things do seem to peak around now.

This fact was borne out by us last spring when our first call of the year was to a wildfire caused by a disposable BBQ.

Whilst our engagement and pro-active activities aim for zero call outs we had a much busier year in 2021, thankfully nobody was seriously hurt at any incident we attended, wildfires, fire alarms, RTC’s and the like.

It was great that all the new fire-fighters on station made calls and gained some of the vital experience they need for more serious events if they happen.

2022 will bring us new challenges along with some of the same old ones like recruitment, retention, operations and training issues caused mostly by covid, but it will also bring challenges to all of us in relation to fire safety in the home.

New legislation around detection means there is a new standard for all housing requiring every home to have linked (one goes off all go off) detectors be they wired, or battery operated.

These are to have smoke detectors placed in the room most often occupied, in all halls, corridors and stairways and a heat detector in the kitchen. We would also recommend a carbon monoxide detector wherever there is an oil or gas boiler and any real fire.

Contrary to popular belief there are no call outs to cats up trees, but we have been called to a dog in a river, the dog got bored and swam back before we got out of the appliance, human beings do ….. interesting things sometimes and we try not to be judgemental.

We were called to a wildfire and upon arrival were greeted by a very apologetic gentleman who had set the hillside alight – by burning his toilet paper – he had read this was a good disposal tip but failed to realize the countryside was tinder dry, we put out the fire but there was much hilarity and jokes in the appliance on the road home!”

Get Crafty

By Gemma Gibson “I am a self-taught craft enthusiast from Falkirk, and am a part time civil servant, mum of 2 and wife to my lovely husband Craig. It was inspired by my husband’s love of the outdoor: long walks with his dogs, camping trips, fishing and then shooting.

I became really interested in the process, and wished to understand what it was my husband enjoyed about shooting. As I explored his love of the outdoors, I realised that everything he shot was put to use and that he never shot what he couldn’t or wouldn’t put to use. It is the same with fishing, nothing is ever wasted, and even the dogs love a good fish stew, bones, and all.

Being able to provide your own food gives you so much more: being part of a community, understanding the importance of conservation and playing your part, living off the land, and the satisfaction in being able to gather your own food and make a family meal that you can sit down and enjoy together. My go-to cookbook is Game and Gatherings by Rachel Carrie. Our children, Ayda (8) and Teddy (4), love to join dad at the shoot, and putting out feeders. During the shooting season, Ayda goes out beating with Craig, father-in-law, and our spaniel Jess.

I have always been creative; at school I loved Art and Design and spent a lot of time in Music and Home economics. However I never really carved out a career in any of these subjects. I was inspired by the feathers from pheasants, particularly the cock birds. The colours make them too beautiful to throw away.

It made sense, it was along the same ethos of field to fork, so I founded ‘the Crafty Keepers Wife’ on social media.

With the pheasant season being in autumn and winter, I made a lovely big autumn wreath to brighten up my dull front door using the tail and wing feathers from those that my husband brought home. From then on I’ve made a new wreath on my door every season. My family and friends love to see all my crafts on Instagram and asked for their own door wreaths, and wall hangings. I love talking about and sharing my passions with them. Interest quickly grew, and I started creating custom orders through my Instagram and Facebook pages, for indoor and outdoor wreaths, and I am also working and developing a range of clocks and resin coaster sets.

I love to see the changes in colour, as the trees begin to grow green once more so my spring door wreath will be mostly green using English Ivy, ferns, and eucalyptus. There are lots of crafts to do around the house in spring-time. As we start seeing flowers starting to bloom, I love to plant window boxes, very inexpensive and brightens up your window views, and even helps the local bees to thrive. My go to box and planters for spring are snowdrops, petunias, geraniums, sweet peas, and trailing lobelia. It’s also mother’s day in March and I like to craft with the kids to make something for our mums, grans, and grandmas. In the past, we have painted handprint canvasses, hand wrapped flower bouquets, wall hanging and wreaths and this year we are going to make some plant pots, you could also decorate your own mugs and plates. I always have an afternoon tea, and I like to make venison & haggis or pheasant, apple & black pudding sausage rolls to accompany it. I love taking inspiration from the seasons and nature.

As a family we like to spend time exploring Perthshire. We love Pitlochry, and have fun memories visiting the Salmon Ladder and sitting in the garden at the Port-Na-Craig Inn with a hot drink, watching to see if we can catch a salmon jumping up the Tummel. We also enjoy camping at Clunes Bay, Loch Lochy. With the pandemic bringing travel restrictions the last two years we invested in new camping equipment and try to venture out when we can. We hope to get further North this year, my grandad was from Forres, Morayshire and always spoke so fondly of his time there as a child, unfortunately I have never been, but it is on our list for April this year. “

Zingy Satay Pheasant & Noodle Salad

Seriously satisfying and fresh, this pheasant satay recipe is the real deal. It’s super zesty making for a great Spring dish to serve to your friends and family.

Note on equipment: You will need a food processor or powerful blender to make this recipe. You’ll also need a grill to cook the pheasant in.

Serves 4

GRILLED PHEASANT 4 pheasant breasts 4 wooden skewers

SATAY

100g fresh coriander 1 fresh red chilli 1 clove of garlic 3 heaped tablespoons of peanut butter 1 teaspoon of soy sauce 2cm piece of fresh ginger 1 lime

NOODLES

250g dried medium egg noodles (or 1 nest per person) 100g unsalted cashews 1 teaspoon of chinese 5 spice 1 teaspoon of runny honey A bunch of spring onions finely chopped A small bunch of fresh coriander leaves 2 tablespoons of soy sauce 1 lime 1 teaspoon of sesame seed oil 1 teaspoon of fish sauce 1 tablespoons of sesame seeds

To start: place your 4 wooden skewers in water. Let them soak. Put your grill on the highest temperature setting.

Place cashews in a food processor or blender with Chinese five spice and blend. Once you have cashews in a mixture of sizes and consistencies, take them out of the processor and to one side. Next it’s time to make the satay sauce in the food processor.

Add the coriander (stalks and all), chilli, garlic, peanut butter and soy sauce and blitz. Add ginger and zest of one lime and the juice from this lime. You may need to add a couple splashes of cold water to make the paste into a sauce. Season to taste.

Next: slice up the pheasant and put onto the wooden skewers. Lather peanut sauce on top of the pheasant and rub the sauce into the pheasant with your fingers. Place the remainder of the peanut sauce in a small bowl with olive oil on top and put to one side. Put the pheasant under the grill for about 10 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through.

Whilst the pheasant is cooking under the grill, put together the noodle salad. Put the nests of noodles in a large bowl and cover the noodles with boiling water. Leave to soak for about 5 minutes. Put a medium fry pan on low heat and add the cashew mixture to the pan with runny hunny. Chop up the spring onions and coriander and place in a large bowl. Add the cooked noodles to this bowl along with the golden cashew nuts once they are ready.

Add soy sauce, sesame oil, fish sauce and lime juice to the salad. Toss and season to taste with salt, pepper and sesame seeds.

Place this noodle salad on the table with a small bowl of satay sauce. Serve the pheasant skewers with your favourite boiled green vegetables, fresh limes and ice cold lager beer. We usually go for crispy green beans or pak choi.

Loch Rannoch

Loch Rannoch, or Loch Raineach in Gaelic, lies on the old main route north to the west coast of Scotland, known as the Road to the Isles. However, in the 19th century, major road construction bypassed it leaving the area unspoiled and unchanged.

Loch Rannoch is a freshwater loch approximately 9.3 miles in length, and 0.75 miles wide. The eastern end of the loch is the deepest at 440 feet. The loch is surrounded by a 22 mile circular single track road with passing places. A Crannog is situated in the water on the western side of the Loch.

The village of Kinloch Rannoch is found at the eastern end of the loch and Rannoch Moor on the western end.

Kinloch Rannoch is the start of the Clan Trail, an anti-clockwise route around the loch featuring a series of story boards sharing tales of the local clans before 19th and 20th centuries.

The local Clans of Rannoch were the MacDonalds, the Menzies, the MacGregors, the MacDougalls, the Camerons, the Robertsons and the Stewarts, and were all known for the toughness and also for their wildness.

Although Loch Rannoch looks like a peaceful setting today, it was wild and unsettled back in the days of the Clans. It is very interesting to note, in 2022, there are still many MacGregors, Stewarts, and Robertsons living around the loch!

Loch Rannoch is a beautiful location, full of history, myth and magic. It’s a popular spot for photographers and tourists throughout the year, and on a clear day, views extend out towards Glencoe.

Fishing with Lana

“One thing tends to relieve me of my post-Christmas and New Year January blues… salmon fishing!

After a long wait over the winter while the salmon are spawning and the rivers are shut for fishing, I long to get back out on the river. During the first few months of salmon fishing from January to March the conditions can at times be bitterly cold and challenging, however, it is always worth enduring for the potential reward of an adrenaline inducing tug on your line, which soon warms you up!

Last spring, I was lucky enough to catch a beautiful tide fresh 9lb hen salmon from the Upper Caen pool on the river Helmsdale. The Helmsdale River begins it journey initially from Loch Badanloch, it then makes its way, accompanied by the water from many tributaries approximately 34 kilometres downstream to join the Moray Firth at the village of Helmsdale.

Contrary to my above statement regarding the typical spring fishing weather conditions, my day on the Helmsdale last year was in fact glorious. The sun was beaming, I eventually even had to remove a layer! We were joined by a ghillie who was full of character and clearly knew the river very well, after 40+ years in the industry, his knowledge I found completely priceless, I made it my mission throughout the day to shamelessly steal as much of it as I could!

I may be mistaken in saying this, but due to me being young and female, he perhaps had apprehensions at first on how well his day with me was going to go.

After chucking a few nice casts across the first pool, fishing it down well and hooking into my fish within the first half an hour, I believe his outlook soon changed for the better!

As well as fresh spring salmon, those which have come back into the river again from the sea in the springtime, I very much respect and admire any kelts which I catch in the springtime. Kelts are any male or female salmon who have spawned in the river over the winter and have survived after spawning.

They remarkably begin to slowly repair and regain condition in preparation to head back out to sea where they will feed and then hopefully successfully return to the same river to spawn again.

Lots of fishers believe that catching a kelt is some sort of anti-climax, especially when you are on the hunt for a fresh fish, but I partly disagree. I caught one on a blustery day on a lovely river in the North coast early last spring, it was that silver and fought that fiercely that until I almost landed it, I thought I had hooked into a fresh fish! It took very aggressively and gave me a respectable fight which is typical of a strong and eager fresh run spring salmon. The difference between the two usually is that kelts are a lot thinner than fresh fish as they have vastly less condition on them than those who have just returned from the sea, they are also a lot darker in colour, another change which occurs whilst they are within fresh water.

I have just returned from a couple of days fishing the Helmsdale.

It was so brilliant to get out on the river again and commence the search for the first fresh fish of the year, for me and for the river Helmsdale itself.

Unfortunately, we didn’t come across any, however the glorious weather and near perfect fishing conditions, unusual for the time of year, really made the trip enjoyable anyway. We even got sun burnt! For me it is never always just about catching a fish. Yes, we all go fishing ultimately to catch a fish, however, the day out as a whole is what it’s all about for me.

Being outdoors surrounded by nature and cracking scenery, either some relaxing time alone or some good craic with friends, it is always going to be pleasant regardless if any fish are caught or not. My next plan for this season is to fish the Tay which has already had a few mid-January post opening day ‘springers’. Although I have fished it several times before, the Tay is still a bigger river than I am used to fishing. I grew up with, and have spent most of my time, fishing smaller rivers, so the Tay definitely intimidates me, although I love pushing myself out of my comfort zone as it is a great opportunity for me to challenge and improve my longer distance casting.

I am certainly looking forward to the thrills and adventures the 2022 Salmon fishing season has to offer.”

“This is definitely that time of year that I, along with other anglers have been waiting patiently for over the winter months – spring! Winter for me and other fishing fanatics is usually spent at poorly lit fly tying benches tying the next best thing for catching that early season Springer. Or head buried in internet searches, books, magazines, and podcasts looking for inspiration on venue choice for both me and our guests to catch that King of Fish, the Atlantic Salmon. This all adds to the excitement of a new season, because it re-lights that passion for spending time in some of the most beautiful places in the world amongst nature, chasing that all elusive salmon. But let’s not forget that just around the corner is the season for trout fishing. Scotland has some of the most stunning and wild places on the planet for chasing these iconic species, Salmo Salar (Atlantic Salmon) and Salmo Truta (Brown Trout and Sea Trout). Both species provide their own challenges and opportunities.

Now spring fishing might not sound that attractive? After all, if you actually think about this rationally, it’s usually spent up to your “navel” wading in freezing cold water, throwing out lines in search of fish that you can’t see most of the time! However, there’s so much more to early season fishing than this. I usually prepare by sorting out my fly boxes and making sure I’ve got the right ammo for the job. This usually consists of Monkey and Scandi flies for me. These are heavier and almost always have black, yellow, and orange materials in them. I look for plenty of movement in the materials to provoke the salmons taking instinct, alongside “I have been known to weight for depth. take an early season ‘dook’ Then there’s the kit...... consisting of larger fly rods matched with sinking or short lines for fishing deeper into the river temperature layers due to cold water distance swim!” conditions.

The conversation and topic surrounding kit is a whole new article in itself, River Findhorn so let’s not go there just yet.

But never forget, the thermal layers and warm waterproof clothing for these colder weather conditions during spring. I also ensure my gas canisters are fully replaced on the life saving wading vests, especially when I know guests are placing their trust in me to keep them safe. Another top tip is always take a warm change of clothes with you. Rivers usually run big and deep due to the snow melts or rains we experience at this time of year in Scotland. Wading comes with risk and alongside that, I have been known to take an early season “dook” or short distance swim! Trust me, the water is cold and it’s a long drive home in freezing cold wet clothing. Your spirits will take a bit of raising when something this simple can bring what could have been a great day, to a premature end due to poor preparation.

People travel from all over the world to fish and it’s easy to see why. Our rivers flow from some of the most beautiful mountain ranges and meander through gorges and valleys across some of the most picturesque countryside there is.

If you match this with the chance to go to places that few people set foot on throughout the year, in search of a wild fish, then there’s no better place to be. Imagine this alongside the ability to start your day, waking up in some of the finest accommodation there is near to these rivers. Be it a castle or a small, secluded self-catering lodge, which you can retire to and sample some fine Scottish cuisine (and of course a dram or two of Single Malt Whisky) after a long hot soak in a deep relaxing bath..... I think you get the picture?

But spring is not just about spring fishing. It’s merely a taste of what lies ahead for the coming year. I use this time wisely. Because, that re-ignited passion for fishing pushes me further to ensure the seasons plans are well underway for our guests.

We are fortunate as we have many guests that return to us year after year.

We are never complacent about this.

We never lose sight of the fact that our guests entrust their hard earned time and money in us as a business, to make their adventures with us memorable ones for all the right reasons.

Keeping it simple and listening to what our guests are looking for is (for me) the key. I never ever forget that I am no match for nature and what it can throw at us. So when fishing for wild species such as trout and salmon in wild places it takes a lot of experience, patience, skill, and the ability to realise that adventures are built around the experience I always remind myself – this is fishing NOT catching.

Many seasoned fishers still elect to utilise the services of a business to book fishing for them. There are many reasons for this. Often time is a precious commodity, and our guests often have limited knowledge around the places they are seeking to visit. This can often present itself as a daunting task for them. So entrusting a well seasoned business is always a good starting point and wise counsel. We have, like many good solid sporting & fishing businesses, built up years of experience and engage the services of like minded, first class, experienced people (even world champions). This goes a long way to maximising the chances of a first class experience, no matter what the weather or river/water conditions throw at us. We also use excellent equipment that is both reliable and fit for purpose.

This can raise the well trained eyebrow of Cara (my wife) who wonders why I need in excess of 30 fishing rods! However, I have never seen a golfer play a round of golf with one club......... I best leave it there; the spare room is also cold in the spring!

I mentioned in our previous article, that cost should not always be a barrier to seeking out a new adventure in fishing, and I truly believe this. If we tailor the needs of our client to the services we deliver, then this minimises the chance of surprises or disappointment. Modern life is fast and if our guests are stepping off the treadmill, whether it’s for a day or a couple of weeks, we want them to feel in safe hands. Relaxing in the wild surroundings of Scotland is an ideal opportunity to do this.

The choices here in Scotland are endless and varied.

The larger waters such as the Tweed, Tay, Dee, and Spey are steeped in history and fishing tales galore both past and present. These” big four” give you the chance to drift in boats and wade in these deep waters in search of your prize alongside some of the world’s most seasoned and respected Ghillies. Let’s not forget the wild beauty of some of the other famous (and not so) well known rivers that the Scottish Highlands offer. The intimate setting of the Findhorn, Alness, Oich, Glass and Lochy (to name a few) and the wild but beautiful far north rivers such as the Thurso, Naver, Helmsdale, Brora, Borgie, Hope, Inver, Strathmore – where do I stop? All of these give us the chance of solitude in secret gorge pools carving their way through Jurassic giant rock walls (Findhorn), the tranquillity of open “Flow Country” moorland meandering waters (Caithness), or the strong forces of nature that the bold and beautiful Tay and Tweed hold. And let’s not forget the home of Spey Casting itself – the fastest flowing river in Scotland, the Spey.

That’s just an appetiser and flavour of the river fishing Scotland has to offer. But, what if we add in our iconic wild trout fishing in the mountain and moorland lochs?

Scotland clearly has a style and experience for us all....

Then add international fishing opportunities into the mix now that travel borders are relaxing again....where do I stop?

RIVER CARRON CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION Words and photos

“Towards the end of 2021, a potentially significant report was released by the River Carron Conservation Association.

For over two decades, riparian landowners along the River Carron in Wester Ross, of which WES-accredited Attadale Estate is one, have been participating in a project, led by biologist and salmon expert, Bob Kindness, aiming to restore the hugely depleted stocks of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) within the river. In the late 1990s, the River Carron, along with many rivers across Scotland, suffered a dramatic decline in their salmon populations.

Determined to try and reverse this phenomena, the River Carron Conservation Association was formed with the aim of helping the young fish avoid challenging spates and predation during the early stages of their lives.

Supplementary stocking of the river, whereby offspring from Carron broodstock were hatched captively before being released back into the river system, significantly increased their chances of the young surviving. Since 2011, the fish in the river have been meticulously documented through tissue samples collected from broodstock and offspring, as well as wild fish, through methods including electrofishing, smolt trapping and angling. This data has enabled genetic analysis of the fish in order that success of the supplementary stocking could be scientifically quantified.

The recently released report, Phase IIA of the study undertaken by the University of Highland and Islands, looked into how stocked fish from 2014 contributed to the returning adult catch in subsequent years.

While the significant increase in returning adult fish would seem to indicate a successful outcome for the project, knowing which fish were returning and their genetic make-up would be necessary to understand the bigger picture.

The study found that a significant proportion of the returning fish were as a result of the fish released in 2014 (around 35% in 2017 and approximately 27% between 2017 and 2019). Reassuringly, there was no indication that the 2014 stocking programme presented a risk to the genetic diversity of the stocks. While this news is tentatively welcome, a second phase of the study will look beyond the broodstock of a single year and explore the fate of stocked versus wild spawned fish over multiple years. This work is vital to the successful continuation of this project. We must be able to have confidence that human intervention is not inhibiting nature’s ability to eliminate bad genes, such as those from escaped farmed salmon, so that genetic diversity can and will be preserved. For the time being, this latest report inspires further confidence in the ongoing project and is reassuring in its findings. I very much look forward to following the progress of this fascinating study in future years. “When the Hind stalking season closed, you reflected on how the season played out, not just the sporting aspect, but also how your deer management plan reflects on the deer that reside on your ground.”

“Many more days before seasons end will be spent watching, reflecting on how you will tweak your plan for the coming year, and then, as fast as the Hind season comes around, it ends. A sigh of relief knowing there is some down time is quickly followed by a sharp intake of breath as now you will prepare for the deer count in March.

I have spent many years preparing for deer counts in March, contacting the usual gallery of rouges and printing out maps stained with highlighted pen markings that indicate some imaginary boundary. But, as with all best laid plans, the days depend on good weather.

“The fox then took a few seconds to look at the group before it shot in amongst the herd weaving in and out of the Hinds” We have always counted in the same way year after year, two to three people walking and glassing a specific area which I have marked out on the map and noting what they have seen, stags, hinds and last year’s calves, there’s nothing overly complicated in this system, it just requires good communication and people who know the ground well enough and have an understanding where the deer may be on that day. We are looking for similar numbers and ratios to previous years counts.

I do enjoy these count days, observing the deer whilst they go about their day is a joy, yes, there is a job to be done, but you can take a little time watching how each beast interacts with one another and how they interact with the environment they see as home.

Recently, whilst watching a group of hinds making the most of the early morning sun out on a high ridge, I noticed a couple of Hinds jinking and jibing about, to the rear of the group. At first, I put this down to boisterous play by younger Hinds enjoying the warmth of the sun.

As I continued to look at each beast within the group, there was a sudden, but short burst of energy expelled as the whole group surged forward a few yards then settled again. This went on for a few moments and each time the group settled and continued to feed. Not seeing this event before I was determined to get closer to understand why the group were doing this. Gaining more ground near the base of the ridge I found a good vantage point to settle in and watch the spectacle before me. After waiting a few short minutes, the show seemed to be over, then, without any indication a part of the group surged forward again, by now the sun was higher in the sky making it difficult to see clearly what was happening. As I continued to glass the skyline, the familiar outline of a fox trotted along the sun kissed ridge, seemingly enjoying the warming rays itself. The fox, head up trotting like the finest of dressage horses, made its way toward the Hind group, the Hinds paying no particular attention to the fox carried on, heads down, feeding. “Old Reynard”, without missing a step or slowing down carried on toward the group, at about five yards away the fox sat up, chest puffed out and head up, if I had a spaniel present a woodcock to me like that, I would be proud. The fox then took a few seconds to look at the group before it shot in amongst the herd weaving in and out of the Hinds, the herd bolted then settled after a few yards, and began to feed again, not showing any fear of this fox, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I witnessed the fox perform this a couple of times before, I assume, it was the lead Hind decided enough was enough, and on the third occasion, the fox was quickly driven off by her over the ridge.

Was the fox trying its luck and trying to take down a younger Hind? I very much doubt it, I put it down to a young fox frolicking around and making mischief at the expense of the Hind group while the sun shone brightly.

If I had a rifle, I could have probably shot that fox, but I would never have witnessed much of what I did that day, would I have pulled the trigger if I had? Probably not, the sheer pleasure I felt watching that spectacle outshone any desire to cull another fox.

But with all things foxy, their management is constant in our thoughts and spring brings around the “denning time”.

This often means long days at the dens and even longer nights sat out on a foxing vigil. Having a competent, confident dog at your side during the day makes the task in hand a little easier and more effective. Over many years I have owned a few terriers of varying breeds and some of questionable breeding all together. My latest companion is Jock, affectionately referred to as Jocky Balboa, not for his fighting ability (in fact, he has never tackled a fox) but for his loyalty and affection he shows to everyone. Jock is a Patterdale terrier who I have never lost, never had to dig out and has never had a scrape with a fox…. yes, I know, I assure you, he is a Patterdale and an excellent den dog. Working a dog like Jock is the pleasure I take from such an unenviable job, of which the knock-on benefits from such a management plan are there to be seen in the landscape through its biodiversity.

Hopefully, myself and Jock have many more years on the hill together and his loyal gentle demeanour continue on into any offspring Jock sires in the future.”

Me & My ANIMALS by Chloe Forbes

“Ever since I can remember, my life has been surrounded by animals. My earliest memories were learning to ride on ‘Galaxy’ a small Dartmoor pony (right), who was a complete saint. It didn’t take long before I was hooked, and we were attending the local pony club (much to my dad’s dismay!).

We went on to compete in mounted games, dressage, pony club camp and whatever else I could get involved in. Fast forward ten years and I was competing all around the country, trying to qualify for the two most prestigious events in the showing calendar.

Horse of the Year Show and Royal International, in which I was lucky enough to qualify my home-produced Welsh Section C for both.

Upon reflection, ‘Wizard’ as he was known to by his stable mates, really was a pony of a lifetime. Cheeky and loveable in equal measures, we had such a great partnership. When I wasn’t competing at weekends, I was helping to teach my youngest brother to ride and breaking in young horses, which was very rewarding to see them go on and progress. I was very fortunate to be brought up on a small holding, so it wasn’t just horses I was surrounded with. My dad brought a small flock of sheep for my younger brothers, in which I helped at lambing time. It was a wonderful time to see the new life bouncing around in the fields during spring, but it also taught us the important cycle of life. Then there was ‘Pinkie and Perky’, two Gloucester Old Spots pigs, who were fascinating to watch and would follow us round the fields at home for hours.

We had family dogs throughout my childhood, but it wasn’t until my late teens that I got my first gundog. I still remember my excitement as we drove up a bumpy track to a grouse keepers house in a remote part of North Yorkshire, to see the last two Labrador pups of the litter, playing in a small pen.

I knew straight away that George was the one for me and I took him home that day. After summer evenings training on dummies, it was soon time for our first game day together.

Nerves set in on the morning of the shoot, I was just hoping it would all go to plan. As we headed out into the field, George took it all in his stride and had a couple of lovely retrieves – I drove home beaming ear to ear and couldn’t wait to get back out again.

George has been a huge part of my adult life, not least the day I met my now husband, Will. Just over four years ago, we were both invited to a shoot day in the Scottish Borders by mutual friends – and we connected straight away, mostly over our shared love of dogs! In the Autumn of 2018, me and George made the big move North of the Border. Like myself, Will has been surrounded by animals his whole life. His parents ran a boarding kennels and cattery for many years, just outside of Inverness. His father was passionate about training and trailing gundogs and went on to compete for the Scottish spaniel team and being an A panel judge.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Will has the same passion and gets enjoyment from training gundogs. Although his dayto-day job is running his own farrier business, over the last couple of years, together with our combined enthusiasm for gundogs, we have built on the Stormwatch Gundog name, which was started in 1982 by his father. Now we run a small gundog training kennels, based in Perthshire. Specialising in spaniels and Labradors, primarily one-to-one lessons, and residential training.

Over the last few years, we have been lucky to have some many memorable adventures together, which have always included our dogs. From long summer days sat in a pigeon hide, to picking up at the local shoot and training the dogs over rabbits in the Angus Glens – it’s fantastic to see them loving their job.

When we aren’t out in the field, we love exploring the Munros with the dogs, or visiting the beach at St. Andrews, and trips all over Scotland and the UK. Although we are passionate about training the dogs to a high standard, they are, first and foremost, our beloved pets and we relish the time we spent with them both in the field and at home - and look forward to hopefully many more adventures to come in the future.”

“August 2008 - at the end of my first 3-week, very rainy, round trip through the Scottish Highlands, there could only be one question from me to my partner Thomas, ‘when will we book the next trip?’

Based on his experiences from countless previous holidays in Scotland, he was able to give me more information about the country, its people, history, sights, and insider tips than I could have never learned from travel guides. His enthusiasm was infectious, and since then, a love for Scotland has grown that is unmatched.

We are both passionate (hobby) photographers and so our holidays have always been different from normal tourist trips. They were characterised by the search for the beauty of nature, the one special moment - usually combined with waiting for the light in order to optimally capture the mood and the scenery.

In the beginning, we often travelled by car, so we were able to explore as many different areas as possible. As the landscape scenery constantly changed, we stopped countless times, ‘stop and don’t ask why’ became a popular phrase. On later trips, we explored the breath-taking landscapes by foot and climbed some mountains. Particularly challenging and impressive were the ascents of Buachaille Etive Mor, Suilven, Ben More and Aonach Eagach Ridge.

The untouched, wild landscape with its challenges turned us into adventurers. We recall going across the Bad Steps at Loch Coruisk, crossing through rivers, driving on rough single track roads and climbing over walls. The feeling of being one with nature brought us the necessary serenity and strength for the challenges of everyday professional life.

It wasn’t only the mountains that conquered our hearts, but also the numerous islands of the inner and outer Hebrides, each one individual with their unique charm, the walks on the white secluded sandy beaches of Vatersay, the hike to the Eaval in North Uist, the adventurous, unique approach to the beach of Barra, exploring St. Kilda or the observations of the cute puffins on Fair Isle.

In all our trips, no matter which region, we always met friendly Scots, from whom we got even more tips for remote, breath-taking places and whose hospitality will remain in our hearts forever. We also got very interested in Scottish history, culture and artistic events and enjoyed meeting many artists. The concerts of Runrig, Blair Douglas, Dougie MacLean were unforgettable, and the music of the bands still accompanies us everyday.

Small and large paintings by Fiona Matheson, Willie Fulton, Diana Mackie and Marion Boddy-Evans and other artists have been part of our home for many years. Artistic works such as the "Book of Stone" by Lotte Globe, ceramic artist from Loch Eriboll, have found their way into our house. With the special work of art by Scottish Drystone designer Nigel Bialy, we were able to bring a piece of Scotland into our own garden, which always gets a lot of admiration. It was a highlight for us that he came all the way from Comrie to build a drystone wall with a sit-in in our garden around the old lime tree.

Tracing historical events, we could sense the historic atmosphere as overnight guests at Culloden House, Traquiar House and Abbotsford House and in many castles. Inevitably, the "water of life" also found its way into our home after many distillery visits.

So we often sit with friends, enjoy one or more single malts from our collection and rave about the many beautiful memories. Slainte mhath!

For 13 years, we have travelled to Scotland 3-4 times a year at different times of year - for the last time in March 2020. Since then, we have missed it a lot and hope to return soon.

When my daughter Daniela’s enthusiasm for watercolour caught my attention, it opened up an opportunity for me to use the many thousands of beautiful moments experienced in Scotland, captured in photos, as motifs for painterly interpretations.

Her words, ‘it's a pity that no one sees what you are painting,’ convinced me to publish my creative path on Instagram.

Meanwhile, as I dream of experiencing Scotland again, I share my love for the country in photos and picturesque interpretations.”

Walkies Words and photos

“For me, springtime represents growth, happiness, and an awakening of all that nature holds. Daffodils, crocus, snowdrops, and the smell of the wild garlic on a crisp morning always makes me smile. It is all about the feelgood factor, and seeing the colourful flowers pop up when I’m out walking my group of dogs really makes me feel great to be outdoors and taking it all in. 2022 is a great year.

I mentioned wild garlic, and boy do the dogs enjoy eating it, which is all very well until we get back to the car and the smell is overpowering. Talk about garlic breath! Luckily it doesn't give them an upset stomach. That wouldn't be much fun, extra poo bags all round I fear!

Oh, and on the not-so-delicate subject of dog poo, I am absolutely delighted that, at last, the Council have put some more bins in the Hermitage. Only having one at the beginning of the walk was so frustrating and the thought of carrying around a bunch of full poo bags for the entire walk, didn’t feel me with joy. If only my dogs pooed at the start of the walk that would be easy but, alas, the call of nature is not always that regular.

A new young whippersnapper has joined my group. He is a rescue dog from Spain and still has a lot of settling in to do. He fits in well and takes no notice of the dogs but when another dog approaches me from outside of our group, he goes a little bit mad. He's a strong boy and all I can say is it's a good job his owners have invested in a strong harness with a grab handle. Its early days for him to be running around off lead, although I am sure he'll get there once his confidence starts to grow.

As a dog walker I meet a lot of interesting people from all walks of life. Fellow dog walkers, joggers, cyclists, fitness groups and people just out for stroll with their dogs (not professional dog walkers). Most people are very understanding of us dog walkers and do appreciate that, sometimes, our job is challenging but there are the odd few who have no tolerance of us at all. A few of my more troublesome/nervous dogs are kept on the lead for obvious reasons and the ones who are no trouble at all and more confident, and also get on with all other dogs, are off lead. I often get people's dogs that run up to my group and bother my dogs and some that are just trying to be friendly. Of course this leads to the dogs getting stressed and sometimes snapping. This progresses to the owners running up shouting, "Please keep your dog's under control" at me. I politely inform them that my dogs are under control and on the lead, and it's their dogs worrying the group and not on the lead. Isn’t it interesting the way some people think or see a situation. They see a group of dogs and immediately think they are to blame. They don't stop and think that seeing a group of dogs approaching, it might be an idea to put their dog on the lead. At the end of the day I offer a service for people who are either working and can't walk their dogs in the week, elderly people, people who only like short walks without any mud involved and people who are too unwell to walk. I, like other dog-walkers, offer a dog walking service and am grateful for all the people that acknowledge this and how all my dogs are kept under control. Anyway, that’s my moan over! For all the stressful days, there are more good days and all the people and dogs I meet, and they all contribute to my love and enjoyment of my work.

I do feel very grateful and lucky enough to be able to this because of all the nature, animals, and interesting people I meet, it surely beats an office job. My dogs and I walk together well, and they really do look out for me. Sometimes when I'm not feeling great or just a bit down for whatever reason, I am sure they sense it and come over and sit beside me. Just one glance at their furry faces always make me feel better.

There are many walks I enjoy, but the one that is special, has to be Penicuik House. This Neo-Palladian mansion, built in the 1760s is spectacular. Although it is now a ruin, it holds so much history and the grounds that surround it are beautiful. At this time of year, there is an abundance of flowers, and if you wander down to the walled garden, you can almost imagine how life would have been back in its heyday. There is also a small loch and summerhouse which on a calm Spring afternoon is idyllic.

A favourite quote, ‘there is one path in the world that none can walk but you. Where does it lead? Don’t ask, walk!’

I leap forward into Spring and sense new adventures ahead throughout 2022.”

“My time is now limited to the last hour of daylight, but I am keen to see my female Otter as she may not be alone. “

“Kelp moving in the low spring tide catches my eye as it sways in and out of the surface of the water, I am sitting in my usual comfortable rock pool awaiting my local Otter. I feel calm and meditate, listening to the bubbles and the rush of water of the outgoing tide as if I can hear the shore breathing in and out. I admire the Otters design for the elements, no match for my leaking wetsuit and cold fingers, the way they move in torrents of surf and the speed underwater is one of grace and confidence, no wonder they are successful predators of the rivers, lochs, and the vast coastline of Scotland.

My camera is now out of its' drybag and nestled on a bean bag within a dip between two rocks ahead of me. I look out towards the Sound of Canna watching the large clouds rolling in above the western horizon, rays of light cast across the blue and yellow hues that reflect right across the ripples, to the rocks in front of me, my time is now limited to the last hour of daylight, but I am keen to see my female Otter as she may not be alone.

Previous long-distance views with the telescope have produced views of three Otters together, and that would tie into recent behaviour of her chasing off last year’s surviving cub from near her second holt. Alarm calls carry in the wind from Seagulls at the head of the loch and my focus is distracted by a large bird working across the sky above.

An adult White Tailed Sea Eagle is patrolling the shores for sea birds unaware of his presence or perhaps an opportunity to pirate an Otter’s catch by standing over them with 8 ft wings draped out and sharp talons the size of your hands, it even makes me feel nervous! The Eagle has not noticed me in the rock pool as it lands on a rock further down the shore, its' gaze towards the water directs my eyes to the movement of a tail and a bobbing head, all is silent until I hear a distinctive whistle of an Otter bringing a crab on to the rock.

I can now see more than one tail in the water and as I lift my camera towards the action, the Eagle takes off in reaction to the glint of the lens or my need to get a balance on the slippery seaweed.

Indeed, my magnified viewfinder shows what I have been wanting to see, one cub eating the crab as Mum heads back out followed by a squeaking second cub, time to check my camera settings and calm my nerves of excitement, by which time she has emerged on a rock right in front of me. Each individual Otter can be recognised by marks on their nose from a pinching crabs claw or fights with other Otters for territory, but this female has a distinctive feature unlike any other, she is totally blind in her right eye giving her around only 90 degree vision, amazingly this does not stop her from catching prey on almost every dive, Half Eye is a true inspiration she constantly and consistently gets on with whatever life throws at her and remains resilient, she is a cut above the rest, she remains focussed and positive because there is no one to help her, despite her difficulties she still manages to protect and raise cubs in a unforgiving world of storms, disturbance and encounters with other Otters and wild animals, all this and she provides them with a bounty of food and allows the cubs time to play and rest and grow.

My patience is rewarded by getting some great photos of them as the second cub joins in on the feast before the light gradually fades behind the vast Cuillin mountain range. The female, who I call Half Eye lays back in the seaweed for a rest as the cubs crunch on the prey remains, the low slack water and gentle breeze create a sense of peace and harmony as I capture the family together with my silent camera shutter, she knows I am there but is relaxed to my presence as we have both met on the tide many times over the last couple of years and I feel now she accepts my proximity as long as I don’t move fast or act differently to usual. I try and wear the same clothes each time so her best eye can at least see where I am if she wants the recognition, her nose is so tuned in to my smell alongside her excellent hearing.

The cubs look at me cautiously but react in the same way as their mum and they are acclimatising to me too, after a playful roll around they settle down to a deep sleep which Otters typically do after a successful haul of bounty from the underwater jungle below. I am careful not to disturb them, I feel the best thing is to stay low and just watch them as the light fades fast, it's peaceful indeed, the tide is now rising around me, and this change is the cue for the Otter to take her cubs back to the sanctuary of the holt which is made under a large series of rocks above the shoreline.

This is a secret place and where I do not follow. I retreat back to my own comfort of my own home right by the shore, maybe to have a fish supper myself and look at my photos from today’s tide and warm up by the wood burner.

With Summer around the corner I am planning on joining the otters in their aquatic habitat in the hope of filming them in slow motion, and share an update on the otter cubs progress. It will also be time to cover the Pine Martens antics in the forests and to see if I can visit some remote corners of Skye and see what can be found and photographed.”
