Scotch College Foundation Day Concert

The Scotch College 2026 Foundation Day Concert The Foundation Day Concert has been part of Scotch College life since 1911, when the College

celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. Held on Foundation Day itself, the inaugural concert formed part of a larger celebration that brought together the Scotch College community. More than 600 Old Boys attended a Foundation Dinner at Melbourne Town Hall before making their way to the Exhibition Building, where the students of the day awaited them for the concert.

Much of the credit for the concert’s establishment belongs to George Wood, who wrote both the College Song and College Anthem. Wood trained boys for Foundation Day performances until

enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915. He died of wounds sustained in France on 26

October 1917. The music he composed and the tradition he helped establish remain an important part of College life more than a century later.

As Scotch College celebrates its 176th year in 2026, the Foundation Day Concert continues as one of the College’s most enduring traditions. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the generations

who have contributed to the life of the College since 1851, while celebrating the students, staff and families who continue its traditions today.

From the Director of Music Good evening, and welcome to the 2026 Foundation Day Concert.

There is something quite extraordinary about experiencing Scotch College Music for the first time from the inside.

When I started my duties as Director of Music at the beginning of the year, I was cognisant of Scotch College’s remarkable musical reputation. I had attended the 2025 Foundation Day Concert (among other events in my then capacity as Classroom Music Teacher and Clarinet Teacher), so I was familiar with the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind, the various other orchestras and bands, the Choral program, and the Pipes and Drums. I fully appreciated its long history of ambitious performances, and the generations of boys for whom music has been an important part of their Scotch experience.

What was impossible for me to fully appreciate until I started my role in earnest was the sheer scale, energy, and humanity of Music at Scotch.

Music seems to be everywhere at Scotch. When I walk through the Music School on any given day, behind one door there might be a beginner producing his first tentative notes; behind another, a senior student preparing a concerto. Elsewhere, a student-led string quartet is rehearsing, a jazz band is locking into their groove, or a choir is discovering what happens when individual voices become something much larger than themselves. It is wonderfully busy, beautifully noisy, and constantly alive.

Coming into such an established program as its new Director brings with it, first, humility. I tip my hat to my predecessor, Dr. John Ferguson, who oversaw the program grow to new musical heights, and in his extraordinary tenure, demanded a culture of artistic discernment. This discernment is not about performative displays that make one appear knowledgeable at art gallery openings while sipping champagne and nibbling hors d’oeuvres garnished with caviar (although it probably helps); rather, it facilitates critical thinking, a basis for boys to reflect upon their own work, a benchmark for creativity, and an illustration of possibilities in the vast ocean of human exploration.

One only needs to point to the Scotch College Lighting the Way strategy, in particular its values, purposes, and beliefs. Nestled between our work as educators to form men of good character and to champion progress while being inspired by our past, we see the imperative to advance learning that appreciates beauty, pursues goodness, and discerns truth. Why should we appreciate beauty? Simply because to appreciate anything – beyond that which is stuck in a hedonic, dopamine-driven instant gratification – requires empathy, imagination, and curiosity. These traits are vital for character formation and are easily identifiable in some of the most influential and remarkable people on this Earth.

Now that that question has been answered, another needs to be asked: what then is beauty? Beauty can be universal, in an archetypal sense, or it can be an acquired taste that arrives only after being first challenged. Being made uncomfortable through challenge, whether it be in art, music, dance, sport, physics, ironing a particularly difficult shirt, giving a speech, playing a concerto, or overseeing one’s first Foundation Day Concert as a new Director of Music is a thing of beauty of itself. Because from challenge comes growth; from growth comes enrichment, and thus the pursuit of goodness is all the more possible. Our world becomes that little bit bigger.

Tonight we celebrate 175 years of tradition at Scotch College. Although no one attending this concert was there at the very start (if you were, I can only assume you are acknowledged as the oldest living human in the Guinness Book of World Records), we are all here right now, connected by our shared experiences of this wonderful School.

We celebrate through music, art, dance, and spoken word. Importantly, every note heard this evening represents something that happened beforehand: a lesson, a rehearsal, a mistake corrected, a difficult passage repeated, an encouraging word from a teacher, or perhaps a parent listening patiently to practice from another room. A concert such as this is not simply an event; it is the visible and audible result of a community investing in young people over time.

For me, this first Foundation Day Concert as Director of Music is therefore a particularly meaningful occasion. I feel enormously fortunate to have joined a Music School with such dedicated teachers, remarkable administrative

staff, supportive leadership, committed families, and, most importantly, boys willing to experience the discomfort of growth and to break through their own perceptions of limitations: through this we can realise incredible new heights.

There is much that I hope we will explore in the years ahead. But tonight is about celebrating what is already here: the joy of performing, the exhilaration of making something collectively, and the remarkable capacity of music to connect generations of Scotch boys across the College’s long history.

To our staff, families, and everyone who has helped prepare this evening, thank you. And to the boys: enjoy this moment. Performing at Hamer Hall with your friends and teachers is something you may remember long after the individual notes have faded.

It is a great privilege to begin my own journey at Scotch alongside you all.

From the Captain of Music Music is the invisible thread that brings everyone together.

Music has always had a unique way of bringing everyone together. Even with the absence of shared language, background, or taste, it reaches them, often before they have worked out why.

It can unify a room of strangers and make them belong to the same thing. In a world that rarely slows down long enough for that to happen, music remains one of the few things that still manages it. Just walk past the music school on any given afternoon and you’ll hear three or four completely different things at once. A string quartet through one door, a choir warming up through another, a drum kit somewhere upstairs. None of it sounds related. And yet by the time everyone is on this stage tonight, we are unified not only by the uniform we wear, but the music we make.

This year’s concert marks 175 years since the school’s founding, celebrating an anniversary that few schools in the world have the privilege to. Foundation Day signifies far more than a single evening’s work. It is a culmination of years of lessons, rehearsals, and steady improvement, most of it done in rooms nobody else ever sees. Students from across the school will come together, many of them for the first time in a venue this size, performing anywhere other than our own Ian Roach Hall. Those first moments are not new – the voices of Scotch College have been heard through wars and pandemics, and through every version of this school that has come and gone, for 175 years. Tonight, the school sings together, exactly as they did, unified by music.

Scotch College Foundation Day Concert

Kane Shum - Piano

Tiff Tsang - Xylophone

Kane Shum, born in 2008, is an avid musician who began playing the piano at the age of four along with violin at the age of five. He currently studies Piano with Ms Meta Santoso at Scotch College, and violin with Mr Cong Gu of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

As Captain of Percussion for 2026, Year 12 student Tiff Tsang has long stood as a core member of the Scotch College Music Department, establishing himself as an exceptionally talented and versatile multi-instrumentalist. Having begun his musical pursuits at the age of seven, Tiff demonstrated early brilliance by achieving dual distinctions in his ABRSM Grade 8 percussion and Rockschool Grade 8 drum kit examinations during his junior school years. His artistic trajectory has since taken him to international stages of competitions across Australia, China, Hong Kong, Austria, Hungary and Germany. Alongside this, he also has ongoing development in his artistry across violin, guitar and piano.

Kane was awarded his AMusA in piano in 2025 and has been actively involved in chamber groups such as the Scotch College Clarinet Trio, winner of the Strike a Chord Mixed Ensemble Prize in 2024. He was also invited to perform numerous times at the Scotch College Piano Festival.

In 2019, Kane won Third Prize in the eleventh annual American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, earning him the opportunity to perform violin at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York. That same year, he achieved Second Place in both the International Music Competition ‘Grand Prize Virtuoso’ of Amsterdam and Vienna and was named a Second Prize Winner at the 2019 Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition. He went on to win First Place in the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition (Fall 2019), before being awarded his AMusA in violin in 2021 and his LMusA the following year. He later received the Platinum Prize at the 2023 London Young Musician Competition, and in 2024 competed in the semi-finals of the Kendall National Violin Competition in Sydney.

A dedicated member of several orchestras and chamber groups, Kane was appointed concertmaster of both the Ambassadorial Youth Orchestra and the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra. He leads the Quatuor Fabriqués string quartet as first violinist, an ensemble that has won multiple awards, most notably reaching the finals of the 2026 Strike a Chord National Competition. He also sings bass in Scotch’s leading a cappella group ‘The Cardinals’ and is the lead vocalist in a rock band formed with Captain of Percussion Tiff Tsang.

In 2024, Kane performed the second movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra at their Autumn Concert, followed by the finale of Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy at the Summer Prom Concert the following year. He also sings opera at diploma level and has appeared as soloist in ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ at the Woodend Winter Arts Festival.

Beyond his individual mastery, Tiff remains a vital contributor across the school’s ensembles including the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind, Drumline, senior choirs and TAPAS. His recent featured performance with the Combined School Orchestra once again exemplified his reputation for combining virtuosic precision with dynamic stage presence and infectious charisma. Tiff also continually pushes his creative boundaries through original songwriting and composition for his rock band alongside fellow Captain of Music Kane Shum to expand his musicianship into contemporary domains. Their performance together at the wellknown MHS Rock Night last year impressed the crowd, highlighting their magnetic stage chemistry and seamless crossover between symphonic and contemporary genres.

Outside the music department, Tiff presents a remarkably broad spectrum of talents. He has been an accomplished volleyball player, state fencer, top drama performer as well as national awardwinning artist. Academically, his passion for product design and psychology has earned him prestigious academic recognition, indicating his dedication to excellence across disciplines.

Kane hopes to continue creating and sharing music with like-minded collaborators, bringing performances to audiences for years to come.

Programme Notes

Scotch College Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Dr Karen Heath Associate Conductors: Mr David Musk and Mr Ben Castle Guest Conductor: Dr Scott Marsh Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity - Gustav Holst Conductor: Dr Karen Heath

When Gustav Holst wrote The Planets Suite between 1914 and 1916, it is little wonder that this work opens with the powerful and terrifying “Mars – The Bringer of War”. The Great War (1914-1918) was afoot, and the future of the entire planet was unknown. As always, the creative arts documented this profound, global existential shift through music, dance, drama, and fine art, exploring circumstance and perspective through the lens of human experience. Nearly as if to counter the proximate and unrelenting horror of war, Holst’s The Planets Suite brings the Roman Gods associated with the planets to musical life, with all their personality and character.

The first movement, “Mars”, examines the brutality of human suffering before the soothing and lullaby-like “Venus – the Bringer of Love”. The third movement is “Mercury – the Winged Messenger”, a playful, energetic work evocative of a messenger in flight, charged with the responsibility of communications back and forth. This is followed by the piece we present to you tonight: “Jupiter – the Bringer of Jollity”. This work, resplendent with brilliance and unrepressed joy, integrates a melody later adapted for the hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country. In the full suite, this is followed by “Saturn – The Bringer of Old Age”, “Uranus – The Magician”, and “Neptune – The Mystic”.

While it has long been espoused in music textbooks that Holst based the order of The Planets Suite on what was most musically effective, it is striking that during the very year that The Great War commenced, he chose to start this mammoth musical work with “Mars – The Bringer of War”.

The decision to perform for you tonight, “Jupiter – The Bringer of Jollity,” was initially in response to some musicians in the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra requesting to learn it. In addition to this, however, “Jupiter – The Bringer of Jollity”, true to its name, embodies merriment, hope, and unconstrained joy: to share these emotions together in the one space is truly a special thing. The hymnlike middle section evokes patriotism, pride, and an enduring awareness that contributing to a cause bigger than ourselves is a crucial part of humanity.

We hope you enjoy this impressive work.

Forty Years On - John Farmer Conductor: Dr Scott Marsh

What will we remember of school forty years from now? That question lies at the heart of Forty Years On, written for Harrow School in the nineteenth century with words by Edward Ernest Bowen and music by John Farmer. The song imagines former students looking back on their school days, remembering friendships, experiences and the people with whom they once shared them. Adopted into the musical traditions of Scotch, it has acquired its own history within the College. On a day marking 175 years, its perspective is especially poignant.

Generations come and go; buildings, classrooms and fashions change. Yet the memories formed at school and the relationships that give those memories meaning have a remarkable way of remaining.

Loch Lomond - Traditional Scottish Conductor: Dr Scott Marsh

“By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes…”

These opening words whisk us to Scotland, as we imagine ourselves looking out over Loch Lomond.

One of the great songs of Scottish musical tradition, the beautiful melody brings to the fore lyrics imbued with longing: two people separated, with one taking the “high road” and the other the “low road.”

Over generations, those words have accumulated many interpretations involving love, loss, exile, and homecoming.

Highlights from Les Misérables - ClaudeMichel Schönberg, Arr. Karen Heath Conductor: Mr David Musk

For many in tonight’s audience who were fortunate enough to attend Scotch College’s recent production of Les Misérables, this medley will be a welcome reprise of what was a highly professional and highly acclaimed performance run. Under the expert direction of Ms Hayley Sandpearl, musical direction and conducting by Mr David Musk and vocal preparations by Mr Ned Dixon, students brought this monumental musical to life with tremendous commitment and energy. Claude-Michel Schönberg’s score contains some of musical theatre’s most enduring writing, moving from whispered prayer and personal heartbreak to revolution and full-company spectacle. Tonight, the Symphony Orchestra revisits highlights from that score with some of the original cast, this time with massed choir. We hope you enjoy this musical encore to a production that became a memorable part of Scotch’s 175th year.

Concertino for Xylophone and Orchestra - Toshiro Mayuzumi Conductor: Dr Karen Heath

Soloist: Tiff Tsang (Xylophone)

Tonight, the xylophone steps out from the back of the orchestra and into the spotlight. Japanese composer Toshiro Mayuzumi’s Concertino for Xylophone and Orchestra is a dazzling display of precision, colour and rhythmic agility. Written in 1965, the work reflects Mayuzumi’s distinctive musical world, in which Western orchestral traditions meet the sounds, gestures and aesthetics of twentieth-century Japan. The soloist is asked to move at breathtaking speed, but virtuosity is only part of the challenge: clarity, character and an acute sense of dialogue with the orchestra are equally important. Bright, unpredictable and exhilarating, this work reveals just how expressive a percussion instrument can be as Tiff Tsang masterfully takes us on a fantastical musical journey.

Piano Concerto - Francis Poulenc Conductor: Dr Karen Heath Soloist: Kane Shum (Piano)

Francis Poulenc rarely stays in one musical mood for long—and his Piano Concerto is all the more delightful for it. Composed in 1949, the work can be elegant one moment, mischievous the next, before suddenly revealing a passage of unexpected tenderness. Poulenc delighted in mixing musical worlds: concert-hall sophistication rubs shoulders with popular melody, theatrical gesture, and wit. The piano is consequently both virtuoso protagonist Celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of Scotch College

and conversational partner, sometimes commanding the orchestra and sometimes slipping effortlessly inside its textures. Beneath the humour lies music of considerable refinement and beauty. Our soloist for this work, Kane Shum, has made it completely his own, applying nuanced sensitivity where required, or conversely, a dramatic sense of power when the music demands it.

How do you represent 175 years of a school in music?

Toward the end of Term 2, Mr Tim Shearer, Head of Advancement, burst into my office with an answer to this very question. Why not tell a story of growth, discovery, and character formation through a child learning an instrument?

As Tim was explaining his vision for this work from start to finish, I was captivated: we could bring the whole school together, from the very young to those Old Boys in our community who have watched Scotch’s progress and advancement over many years.

We could sing as one and “perform” together a simple yet memorable act of wishing our hallowed School a happy birthday.

To embody the journey of the College, we brainstormed ways to merge tradition with forward momentum. For this, I believe it was Tim’s idea to feature a very young musician at the very start of his journey—the precipice of possibility—alongside the expertise of the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra musicians. Our young musician tonight, Philip Yang of Grade 1, has practised hard to bring to us all a wonderful rendition of this work, and we are so very proud of him.

Happy Birthday, Scotch! begins with virtuosity, nostalgia, and a nearly cinematic opening—in fact, you would be forgiven for thinking that we had forgotten to play Happy Birthday and moved onto something else.

Nonetheless, as Philip takes over from the Symphony Orchestra with his solo, we are reminded that all things of beauty start with curiosity and openness.

There is something deeply appropriate about telling the story of Scotch in this way. A school is not simply its buildings, traditions or achievements. It is a place where children begin things they cannot yet do, and where, through years of encouragement, effort and opportunity, those beginnings can become something remarkable.

Please join us in wishing a Happy Birthday to Scotch College. Don’t worry – you’ll know when it’s time to sing!

Scotch 175th Medley - Nicholas Buc Conductor: Dr Karen Heath

Soloists: Harry Chatfield (Didgeridoo), Nick Leeton (Bagpipes) and Cameron Ang & Mark Elliot (Vocals) Commissioned by Scotch College for the 175th year of the School, Old Boy and composer Nic Buc Medley draws upon the College’s Scottish heritage, uniting tradition with Indigenous Australia and iconic contemporary culture for this impressive work.

Among the most distinctive elements of this piece is the use of traditional Scottish Gaelic, including the powerful address A Chlanna Chuinn—“Children” or “Descendants of Conn.” The phrase appears in historic Gaelic poetry associated with Clan Donald and the Battle of Harlaw, carrying echoes of ancestry, kinship, and collective identity.

You’re the Voice - As performed by John Farnham, Written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder, and Chris Thompson, Arr. David Hirschfelder & Karen Heath Conductor: Dr Karen Heath

Soloist: Nick Leeton - Bagpipes This unofficial Australian anthem was released by John Farnham in 1986 and has well and truely stood the test of time. It is a work that seemingly many of us have known just about from birth: it is in our blood, and it is undoubtedly part of the social fabric that unites us as a people. Furthermore, the messaging is wholly appropriate for Scotch: speak up, participate, have courage (even when it is hard to find), and recognise that each of us has a part to play.

This work is a fitting finale for tonight’s Foundation Day Concert. The handclaps, insistent and repetitive, urge us to be part of the story. It is a rallying call to attention. The distinct vocal melody commences in a subdued fashion, rising to great heights later in the chorus, and implores us all to do our part. As the 2026 Year 12 Class finishes up their schooling, this message is really for them: go well, make change, and never stop believing that we can make things better.

Academy String Orchestra Conductor: Mr Ben Castle The Court of Berevew - Anton Koch

Anton Koch’s The Court of Berevew is a contemporary work for string ensemble that explores atmosphere, colour and the expressive possibilities of the string orchestra. Commissioned

by Scotch College, the work was premiered by the musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The Court of Berevew received its world premiere as part of the MSO’s Rebirth program, a concert celebrating new beginnings and the resilience of musicians and audiences following the challenges of recent years. Rather than following a traditional narrative, Koch invites listeners into an imagined sound world. The title suggests a place of ceremony and mystery, a “court” where different voices meet, interact and respond to one another. Throughout the work, layers of sound emerge and dissolve, with the ensemble moving between moments of intensity, reflection and delicate interplay.

Koch’s writing draws attention to the unique qualities of string instruments: the warmth of sustained tones, the energy of rhythmic gestures and the expressive character of individual voices within the larger ensemble. Fragments of melody and texture pass between sections, creating a sense of conversation and discovery.

The Court of Berevew offers listeners an opportunity to experience contemporary Australian composition at its most imaginative. Music that embraces tradition while exploring new colours, emotions and possibilities.

String Quartet No. 12 in F major - Antonín Dvořák

Nicknamed the “American” Quartet, Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F major was written in 1893 during a summer holiday in Spillville, Iowa. Dvořák had travelled to the United States to lead the National Conservatory of Music in New York, and his time away from the city gave him space to compose music filled with warmth, energy and an unmistakable sense of the outdoors.

The finale, marked Vivace ma non troppo - lively, but not excessively fast - brings the quartet to an exuberant close. Its main idea is bright, rhythmic and immediately memorable, returning several times like a musical refrain. Between these returns, Dvořák introduces contrasting episodes: some vigorous and playful, others more lyrical or reflective. Listen for the way short rhythmic patterns are passed between the instruments, creating a lively musical conversation.

Although the work was originally written for four string players, tonight’s orchestral performance enlarges its colours and scale. The fuller string sound allows the sweeping melodies, sudden contrasts and dancing rhythms to emerge with added richness and excitement.

Dvořák was deeply interested in the musical traditions he encountered in America, particularly African American spirituals and Indigenous music.

Rather than directly quoting particular melodies, he absorbed aspects of their rhythm, shape and character into his own distinctive Czech musical language.

The finale combines driving momentum with moments of tenderness before gathering strength for its jubilant conclusion. It is music of optimism, movement and discovery, with spontaneity and infectious good humour.

American artist Ben Shahn’s painted series called Lucky Dragon is dedicated to the Japanese tuna fishing boat, Daigo Fukuryū Maru (Lucky Dragon 5) ) that was exposed to and contaminated by nuclear fallout from the United States’ Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific on March 1st 1954. Later, the series was compiled into a picture book called Home is Here: Ben Shahn’s Lucky Dragon by Arthus Binard. When Hirokazu Fukushima discovered this book, he was inspired to write a composition in memory of Daigo Fukuryū Maru.

A quote from the book says, “This tragedy will not be forgotten; however, there are those who eagerly wait for it to fade from one’s memory”. Fukushima composed this work to promote remembrance of the Daigo Fukuryū Maru’s truth. The English title is derived from the Japanese subtitle, Daigo Fukuryū Maru no Kioku (Memoir of the Lucky Dragon V). .

Fukushima traced and expressed the reality of the tragedy in the first half of the work. The brighter second half is an image of a dragon, the boats spirit, breathing life to become the Lucky Dragon, rising to heaven.

By performing this work, students should become aware of this tragic event and the nuclear challenges that we all face. Fukushima hopes audiences will also find empathy with this issue. He wishes that an unforgettable feeling about the loss will be shared by a growing circle, one by one.

Scotch College Foundation Day Concert

Work Song is drawn from Duke Ellington’s landmark 1943 suite Black, Brown and Beige, an ambitious musical portrait of African American history.

Premiered at Carnegie Hall, the suite traced a journey from slavery through emancipation and into modern America. Ellington described it as “a parallel to the history of the Negro in America,” demonstrating his belief that jazz could tell stories of profound historical and cultural significance.

Originally part of the opening movement, Black (not performed this evening), Work Song evokes the relentless rhythm of physical labour through powerful blues-infused melodies and insistent rhythmic figures. More than a depiction of work, the music is an expression of resilience, dignity and hope in the face of hardship. Tonight’s performance celebrates Ellington’s extraordinary ability to transform lived history into music of enduring emotional power.

Sofrito - Mongo Santamaría, Arr. by Michael Philip Mossman Afro-Cuban percussion legend Mongo Santamaría was one of the pioneers who brought Cuban rhythms into mainstream jazz. Sofrito takes its name from the fragrant blend of onions, garlic, peppers, herbs and spices that forms the flavourful foundation of many Caribbean and Latin American dishes. The title is a fitting metaphor - just as a sofrito provides the essential base from which a meal develops its character, rhythm forms the foundation of this exhilarating composition.

Michael Philip Mossman’s acclaimed big band arrangement layers percussion, bass, piano, brass and saxophones much like the ingredients of a great sofrito - each adding its own colour, texture and intensity. The result is a vibrant fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation, full of infectious energy, driving grooves and exhilarating ensemble playing.

O Nata Lux (“O Light Born of Light”) is a setting of a traditional tenth-century Latin hymn, long associated with the Feast of the Transfiguration and the season of Christmas. The text reflects on Christ as the light of the world and offers a prayer that those who seek Him may become members of His blessed body.

Douglas Byler’s setting pairs this ancient text with flowing melodic lines and warm, expressive harmonies. Its simplicity allows the beauty of the words to shine through, inviting both singers and listeners into a moment of quiet reflection and contemplation. Sensitive phrasing and musical nuance convey its profound message of hope, light and redemption.

Scotch College ‘Ngarrgu Terru-galk’ Indigenous Mentoring Program Mentor For the first time at a Scotch College Foundation Day Concert, the Indigenous students of the College will share three dance items as part of this evening’s program.

It is important to understand that these dances are not presented to you tonight as entertainment.

Rather, they are an invitation to witness living cultural heritage: an act of sharing through which story, knowledge, identity, connection to Country and cultural memory are carried from one generation to the next. In this context, it is a cultural practice through which meaning is embodied, remembered and communicated.

The first dance reflects Creation, acknowledging the stories and relationships through which Country, people and culture are understood. The second is a war cry, expressing strength, courage and collective identity. These stories have been told by Wurundjeri Elders and interpreted with permission by the students.

The third is a contemporary freestyle peice, danced to Yothu Yindi’s Treaty, connecting each student’s cultural identity with a powerful contemporary Indigenous voice.

Baba Yetu - Christopher Tin

Baba Yetu (‘Our Father’) is a Swahili setting of The Lord’s Prayer, originally commissioned as the theme song for the video game Civilization IV. Since its debut in 2005, it has become an immensely popular choral work and one of the most critically acclaimed pieces of music written for a video game, winning a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.

Missionaries of the 19th-century used Swahili as the lingua franca for spreading Christianity across East Africa; consequently, a rich tradition of vocal music arose that blended European harmonies with traditional African call-and-response. This setting of The Lord’s Prayer introduces several new elements into this tradition: an explosive orchestral accompaniment, as well as a complex series of modulations to bring the choral setting into a variety of tonal centres.

Chamber Choir Conductor: Ms Jo Blankfield Dies Irae - Michael John Trotta The Dies Irae (“Day of Wrath”) is one of the most dramatic texts of the medieval Latin Requiem Mass.

Dating from the thirteenth century, it reflects on the Day of Judgement, expressing both awe at God’s justice and a heartfelt plea for mercy. Its vivid imagery and emotional depth have inspired composers for centuries, from Mozart and Verdi to contemporary choral writers.

In this compelling a cappella setting, Michael John Trotta draws on the ancient Dies Irae chant while infusing it with a contemporary musical language.

Driving rhythmic ostinatos, rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines create an atmosphere of mounting intensity, contrasting moments of relentless energy with passages of lyrical reflection.

Firmly rooted in the tradition of Gregorian chant, Trotta’s setting speaks with a distinctly modern voice, making it a dramatic and exciting addition to the choral repertoire.

And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Eric Bogle, Arr. Nicholas Buc Written in 1971 by Scottish-born Australian singersongwriter Eric Bogle, And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda has become one of Australia’s most enduring and powerful anti-war songs. Although inspired by the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War, Bogle originally wrote the work as a response to the Vietnam War, using the story of a young Australian soldier to reflect on the devastating human cost of conflict rather than its glory. Over the decades, the song has transcended its origins to become a moving tribute to the sacrifice and resilience of servicemen and women, and is now firmly embedded in Australia’s musical and cultural identity.

This evocative arrangement by Australian composer, arranger and Scotch College Old Boy Nicholas Buc was originally commissioned by 16

Andrew Hunter, then Scotch College Choral Director and Founding Director of the OSCA-affiliated Concordis Chamber Choir. An extension of the College’s choral tradition, Concordis continues to provide a musical pathway for many former Scotch choristers. Buc later further developed the arrangement for the Scotch College Chamber Choir, continuing a connection with the Music School that also saw him return as a composition teacher and the College’s choral accompanist for many years.

Buc preserves the intimacy of Bogle’s storytelling while expanding the emotional landscape through sensitive harmonies and dramatic choral textures.

The result is a poignant reflection on remembrance, loss and the lasting impact of war, culminating in the haunting refrain of Waltzing Matilda that continues to resonate long after the final note.

The Anniversary Suite - Mark Saul

The Scotch College Drumline showcases the precision, energy, and musicianship of our percussion students through a dynamic performance of two contemporary works for marching percussion.

Ocelot by John R. Hearnes draws inspiration from the agility and stealth of the wild cat from which it takes its name. The work features driving rhythms, intricate sticking patterns, and contrasting textures that challenge performers while creating an exciting, high-energy musical experience.

Double Jeopardy by Julie Davila is a fast-paced and engaging composition that explores layered rhythms, tight ensemble playing, and striking musical contrasts. Known for her innovative writing for percussion, Davila combines technical demands with infectious grooves, making the piece exciting to perform.

Together, these works highlight the discipline, teamwork, and rhythmic precision that define the Scotch College Drumline, celebrating the unique artistry and excitement of the marching percussion tradition.

This year, the Scotch College Pipes & Drums celebrates its 80th anniversary. Formed in 1946, the band is Australia’s oldest school pipe band and has become an icon of the school. The band is very popular with the boys and currently has about 160 boys learning either pipes or drums. Many boys continue playing beyond school, building a community of Old Boy pipers and drummers that spans generations.

As Australia’s most successful competitive school pipe band, the Scotch Pipes & Drums has won multiple Australian and Victorian championship titles, particularly over the past 20 years.

Significantly, it recorded the highest-ever placing for any Australian school band at the World Pipe Band Championships (2014, Juvenile), was the first Australian school band to win a major championship in the UK (2019 European Championships, Novice B), and last year again won the European Championships and came second in the World Championships in the Novice B grade.

Tonight, the band performs the Anniversary Suite, composed by Mark Saul, Head of Pipes and Drums.

The piece celebrates the band’s camaraderie and long history, which have helped build its unique and enthusiastic community within the Scotch Family.

Michael Sweeney The Military Band has had another busy year supporting the Cadet Unit on the musical front. The annual ANZAC Day march and Monash Service are important dates in the calendar, and at the end of this term we look forward to getting out into the field with the rest of the Cadets for annual camp.

Tonight we bring two pieces from the golden ages of 80’s Pop and Disco. Take On Me by the Norwegian group A-ha comes from their debut album Hunting High and Low. It became famous for not only its classic synthesizer sound but its Celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of Scotch College

music video that used “rotoscoping” animation to create the mix between pencil drawn animation and live action.

YMCA by The Village People really needs no introduction. This classic disco hit will hold many a fond memory in the minds of many in the audience tonight. Always energetic and fun, The Village People became a staple on the playlists of clubs and discos around the world through the 1970s and far beyond.

By Christopher Sainsbury Written to mark the College’s 175th anniversary, this new work traces the arc from Scotch’s Highland origins to its Australian home.

It opens as a call to arms: a percussion battery gives way to a rising, whispered chant of “A Chlanna Chuinn” (children of Conn), drawn from the Gaelic battle poem Brosnachadh. Fragments of Cogadh no Sith and a reworked Scots Wha Hae carry the intensity forward, leading to a stirring bagpipe interlude.

A didgeridoo solo marks the turn south, into the Australian identity the College has grown into over 175 years. I Am Australian gives way to Down Under, and finally Up There Cazaly, closing the piece on a warmer, more nostalgic note, from war cry to home.

Nicholas Buc is an award-winning Australian composer, conductor, arranger, violinist and pianist, and an Old Boy of Scotch College. A graduate of the University of Melbourne and New York University, he was the recipient of the Brian May Scholarship for Australian film composers and the Elmer Bernstein Award for Film Scoring.

Buc has conducted all of Australia’s major symphony orchestras, alongside leading orchestras throughout the United States and Asia.

Internationally recognised for his work in film music, he has conducted live performances of scores including Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lion King, Jurassic Park and E.T., and has collaborated with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Tina Arena, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis and Ben Folds.

Alongside his conducting career, Buc is an accomplished composer and arranger whose concert, film and television music has been performed internationally. Recent projects include Daughter of the Inner Stars for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, his oratorio Origins, and a new arrangement of the Australian Open theme recorded by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Consider This is a meditative short piece for string quartet. It is meant to suggest reflection upon any Acknowledgement or Welcome to Country and can be coupled with such. It opens with a meditative chord sequence, has a short central section with more lyrical movement, and closes with the meditative chords again.

We may often feel at a distance from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture, yet as I see it Acknowledgements and Welcomes are a generous gesture of “come, be enveloped by our welcome, our culture (that of the relevant language group/ mob), we embrace you, be a part of us through this ceremonial gesture for a while.”

Christopher Sainsbury is a composer, songwriter, guitarist, educator and Professor in Composition at the Australian National University. Of English, Irish, Dutch and Dharug/Eora heritage, his creative and research interests encompass contemporary Indigenous Australian composition, regionalism, guitar music, surf music and Indigenous education.

Sainsbury spent 23 years as Head of Aboriginal Visual and Performing Arts at Sydney’s Eora Centre and is founder and director of Ngarra-burria First Peoples Composers, a nationally significant development program for Indigenous Australian composers. This work was recognised with the inaugural APRA National Luminary Award in 2020.

His music has been commissioned and performed by leading artists and organisations including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Victorian Opera, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Australian Voices, ANAM and ensembles internationally. His compositions are distinguished by inventive orchestration, strong connections to place and culture, and the prominent influence of his principal instrument, the guitar.

Neuroacoustics X Neuroaesthetics: Year 8 Digital Art Mural with Academy Strings Recent advances in neuroscience have provided unprecedented insights into how the brain functions. Yet despite this growing understanding, we continue to navigate a world filled with competing messages and constant distraction.

Against this backdrop, when the Director of Music Dr. Karen Heath proposed integrating visual art into the Foundation Day Concert, I saw an exciting opportunity to explore the emerging fields of neuroaesthetics and neuroacoustics, which examine how the brain responds to art and sound.

Year 8 Art students were encouraged to engage with the music, Court of Berevew, through deep listening exercises inspired by techniques introduced to the Art Department by renowned jazz musician Steve Sedergreen. These approaches helped students quickly enter a state of flow, characterised by uninhibited enthusiasm, heightened focus, and creative freedom.

Responding intuitively to the music, students produced a series of ten-minute drawings that captured their immediate emotional and sensory experiences.

Concert Etiquette

Give this concert your best performance.

Fellow patrons will appreciate your thoughtfulness and courtesy, so please: 1.

Arrive in plenty of time. As with most venues, staff will not admit latecomers until a suitable break in the performance. Scotch College Melbourne and venue management reserve the right to refuse admission.

2.

Switch off your mobile phone or smart watch before the concert commences.

3.

Note the location of the closest exit sign. In the unlikely event of an emergency, please listen carefully to the staff’s instructions. Venue staff are trained in emergency procedures and will assist and direct you should an occasion arise.

4.

Do not take flash photographs or sound recordings of the performance. Most venues strictly prohibit this and it may also breach copyright.

5.

Please cover your mouth when coughing is unavoidable. Other patrons will appreciate your consideration and health-consciousness when you muffle unavoidable coughing.

6.

Reserve applause until the conclusion of the work.

7.

Please do not talk during the performance, or allow young children to talk.

8.

With certain concerts (particularly those featuring older students or professional performers) it is generally not appropriate to bring very young children or infants.

Young children should not be seated in the first eight rows from the stage.

9.

Do not leave during the performance, please wait until the performers have taken their final bow.

10.

While there will be exceptional circumstances on occasions, as a general rule, please do not leave until the end of the concert, even if your son is not in later items. It is very discouraging to the other performers if they play to a greatly reduced audience just because they happen to be in the last piece.
