KOMPONISTENS FORORD
64

COMPOSER’S PREFACE The work is based on Hans Adolph Brorson’s hymn “Now Found Is The Fairest of Roses”. The melody is by an unknown composer and was first published by Joseph Klug in 1542. The first performance of THE FAIREST OF ROSES took place in Saint Pauls’s Church in Copenhagen on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the church in 2017. It is the intention that the trumpets are placed ”antiphonally” opposite each other with the audience between them, in such a way that there is either one trumpeter in front of the audience and one behind them, or one to the right and one to the left of them. Normally, the 1st trumpeter should be standing close to the organist so that they have the best possible contact. At the first performance, the distance between the trumpeters was more than 30 meters, but the work is composed in such a way that the trumpeters, if necessary, can stand even farther apart from each other, as long as they can see each other. With this in mind, the musicians are free to experiment with different layouts. It might also be acceptable to have the trumpeters standing next to each other, albeit only in such instances where an antiphonal layout is not possible or appropriate for practical or musical reasons. The registration markings in the organ part should only be considered as guiding, and organists are free to disregard these in whole or in part, in order to adapt the registrations to the instrument and the venue in question and to the interplay with the trumpeters, according to the organists’ own interpretation. After bar 62, there are no more registration suggestions in the score, but only dynamic markings (except for a pedal coupling in bar 113). This does not mean, of course, that there should be no more registration changes, but only that from this point it is solely up to the organist to choose appropriate registration changes.
