I. Prairie Voices Hearken Well Hearken well to what I say. A long time ago the land belonged to our fathers, but when I go up to the river, I see a camp of soldiers and they are cutting down my wood or killing my buffalo. And when I see it my heart feels like bursting, bursting with sorrow. –Santana; Kiowa Indian It was Such a New World “It was such a new world. Reaching to the far horizon without break of tree or chimney stack. Just sky and grass and grass and sky… The hush was so loud, as I lay in my upstairs room, the heavens seemed closer than ever before.” We Arrived in Kansas “We arrived in Kansas, one beautiful Sabbath morning, and to the ringing of the church bells, we wended our way to a beautiful spot on a mound south of town. Mother and I could hardly stay in the wagon. The wild flowers covered the prairies in a riot of colors like a beautiful rug. As we gazed with rapture over the beautiful valley encircled by a fine stream of water, we had found God’s own country… we had found God’s own country.” Nightfall “Nightfall blanketing the prairie in a dense boundless blackness, brought a keener sense of solitude to the pioneer home. The profound silence is broken only by the chirr of a cricket or the gentle swish of the tall prairie grass or by the call of the wild. For it was during the black nights that the howl of a coyote and the wolf spread terror throughout ev’ry frontier home.” –quotes from Pioneer Women; Voices from the Kansas Frontier by Joanna L. Stratton A Great, Great City “Gentlemen, there must be a great, great city here. The present is bright. We can be the architect of our own future. Lay your foundation for a metropolis–a great, great city.”
II. Station Voices Building Stone, brick, soil, rock, plaster, masonry, iron, wood, cement and sand. Give the people a monument, a gateway to the West. Build it with steel, granite and glass; build it with copper, marble and clay. Make it with glass, make it with bronze, give the people a monument. Concrete and glass, tile and marble, ninety-five feet from the ceiling to floor. A great hall, sun from the south, sun and air, a place of light. Build it Jarvis, make it grow. Build it to last for a thousand years. Build it Jarvis, make it grow. Build it to last, build it to last for a thousand years. Construction continues at a frenzied pace, we are racing with time. There are seven thousand men working on the station. We are pushing the work, we are racing with time. We will make those Eastern people open their eyes. Seven hundred thousand square feet of space. Ten levels, six full stories, nine hundred rooms, three chandeliers, and a clock in the arch. So when will you be ready to open the station? Look at that marble column. We are racing with time. What plastering. When will it be ready? The corking is wonderful. Give the people a monument. When will it be ready? Gateway to the West. Magnificent! Stupendous! A gateway, a monument, a gateway to the West. Opening Day (Instrumental)
The Santa Fe Chief All aboard! All aboard! For the Santa Fe Chief. All aboard! All aboard! For the Santa Fe Chief. (train announcer) Chicago, Illinois. Across the Des Plains River to Joliet. Then on to Streator and Chilicothe, across the Spoon River, to Galesburg and then to Iowa. Narrator 1: “The Santa Fe Chief is frankly intended for those people who want the best. It is designed for men who demand the extra roaming space provided by the large club cars, and for women who love daintiness and immaculate surroundings. Expert bartering is obtainable and there is the luxury of a shower bath for men as well as women. Fine table linen, gleaming silver and harmonious decoration whet the appetite for a feast prepared under the skilled auspices of Fred Harvey.” –Advertising copy, 1932 Narrator 2: “During the day, the observation car was the place to be, watching the countryside change as it sped by different towns, farms, mountains deserts.” –Michael McMillen Fort Madison, 12:50 PM, then on to Shofton and across the Des Moines River, then two more rivers at 2:10 PM we crossed the border and arrived in Missouri. First La Playa, then Marceline. Narrator 2: “The train conveyed the expectation of great adventure. Sometimes the train would stop in a town and we would get off for a few minutes, actually touching the ground breathing and hearing the people in that place.” –Michael McMillen La Playa, Marceline. Then we cross the Missouri, then we cross the Missouri River, to Kansas City, to Union Station… to Union Station. Kansas City, we’re here! New Year’s Eve (Instrumental) Union Station Massacre (Instrumental)
III. Finale Dirge for Two Veterans The last sunbeam Lightly falls from the finish’d Sabbath, on the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking. Down a new-made double grave. Lo, the moon ascending, Up from the east the silvery round moon, Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon, Immense and silent moon. I see a sad procession, And I hear the sound of coming full-key’d bugles, All the channels of the city streets they’re flooding, As with voices and with tears. I hear the great drums pounding, And the small drums steady whirring, And every blow of the great convulsive drums, Strikes me through and through. For the son is brought with the father,
In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell, Two veterans son and father dropt together, son and father dropt together And the double grave awaits them. Now nearer blow the bugles, And the drums strike more convulsive, And the daylight o’er the pavement quite has faded. And the strong dead-march enwraps me, strong dead-march you please me! O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me! O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial! What I have I also give you. The moon gives you light, and the bugles and the drums give you music, And my heart, O my soldiers, O my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans, My heart, My heart gives you love, My heart gives you love, my heart gives you love. –Walt Whitman
Requiem Aeternam Requiem Dona eis domine Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
To Every Thing There is a Season… To ev’ry thing there is a season, turn, turn. And a time for ev’ry purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to plant, a time to laugh, a time to dance. A time to die and a time to kill, A time to hate and a time of war. A time to kill, a time to die, A time of war, a time of hate, a time to keep silence. A time to love, a time to heal, a time to embrace. To ev’ry thing there is a season, turn, turn. A time to be born, a time to die, A time to plant and a time to reap. A time to kill, a time to heal, A time to build up, a time to break down. A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to laugh. A time to get, to lose, to rend, to sew, to cast away stones, to gather stones, a time to embrace, a time to refrain, a time to keep silent, to speak, of love, of hate, of war. A time of war, a time of peace. Turn, turn, turn. –after Ecclesiastes
