Trumpet Concerto Full Score
Including the original Finale based on the composer's piano manuscript (restored passages orchestrated by Franck Villard)
PREFACE
The discovery of this “extended” final movement of the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Henri Tomasi began when conductor Fabien Gabel and trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger noticed that the rehearsal numbers in the final movement of the piano reduction seemed to indicate a number of missing passages. Gabel enquired with Claude Tomasi, the composer’s son, about the possible existence of other more complete scores Claude Tomasi located such a document in the collection of ensemble director Éric van Lauwe, who had purchased the original piano manuscript of Tomasi’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra at auction. Van Lauwe allowed Gabel to study the document leading Gabel to discover the longer, more developed version of the final movement.
The Paris Conservatory commissioned Henri Tomasi for the Concerto for Trumpet in 1946. The original engraving of the reduced score for trumpet and piano contained an additional minute of music but for some unknown reason the composer made two cuts before the engraving of the reduction was published. The cuts were removed from the engraving without corrections to the rehearsal numbers, which jump from 25 to 29 and from 29 to 36. The orchestral score was based on this shorter version but does not have the same breaks in rehearsal numbers.
Confident of this version’s merits, Fabien Gabel sought to bring it to the public’s attention. With the approval of Claude Tomasi, he asked composer Franck Villard to orchestrate the missing measures in the style of the rest of the work. We are entirely convinced by the result.
