1. Overture On Christmas Night

Caesarea was a heathen town, shunned by the Jews. It had been built by the Roman quisling King Herod, the most hated man in Israel.

Narrator Two:

2. The Arrival of the Three Ships [Music continues under the narration] Narrator One: The Sons of Light sat huddled in their caves overlooking the Red Sea as they had done for centuries, praying, meditating and reading their ancient texts by the light of their flickering oil lamps.

Choir shouts: He is coming!

He is coming!

A star out of David!

Narrator Two: But now their prayers were more intense and there was a wildness in their eyes. At last it seemed the time was here; the portents and prophesies were about to come to fruition.

For three days and nights the Sons of Light watched from the cliffs outside the city walls, and on the fourth days they saw them; three brightly coloured ships, one green, the second the colour of a thrush’s egg, and the third, smaller but faster, as red as spilled blood.

Narrator One: The ships sailed into the harbour. The camels kicked and spat as they were dragged off the icy decks. In his cabin below Balthazar, Grand Master of Signs and Wonders at the University of Babylon, was deafened by the sound of their protestations. It had been he who had first noticed the strange phenomenon, a star shining brightly on the horizon moments before its light was obliterated by the rising sun. He repacked his golden compasses, and wrapped his scarlet cloak tightly round him.

Narrator Two:

A Messiah!

A Prince of Peace!

He is coming!

In the second ship Melchior, Dean of the University of Mosul, was replacing his beloved maps in their silk-lined ivory boxes.

It was his astrologers who had identified that the star was Jupiter, which told of kingship, and that it was currently in a configuration heralding a great event in the backwater known as Israel, the land of the Hebrews. This was a phenomenon they must observe, no matter the cost.

Narrator One:

Narrator One:

Three of them were chosen; those with the keenest eyes and strongest legs. They strode towards the Roman town of Caesarea. Their hair was long, their clothes were patched and ragged, and each held a crude staff in his hand. It was in Caesarea that it would all begin; and it would be presaged by three foreign ships on the horizon.

Caspar was already ashore. Her priestesses were unloading the spices and diplomatic gifts which would sweeten their way through this barren land. She had left the comforts of Kandahar half a year ago to join the wise men and magicians on this great expedition. They were pompous, and some were stupid, but they gave her the respect she deserved as a High Priestess of divination. And so they should! It was her research which had identified an ancient Hebrew text which foretold the appearance of the bright star.

Choir shouts:

Choir sings: And all the bells on earth shall ring On Christmas day, on Christmas day,

Choir chants:

Of woman!

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Narrator One:

Narrator Two: This was what the Hebrew prophet Isaiah had predicted. This is what the star portended – the birth of a miraculous boy – a child to be born somewhere in this bleak and poverty-stricken land who would change the course of human history.

Narrator One: The Sons of Light watched silently until the three ships were empty. That which would appear had begun. The great caravanserai of philosophers, astronomers, astrologers, magicians and diviners moved slowly out of Caesarea and off towards Jerusalem. For such serious and distinguished academics, their step was remarkably light!

Fifty miles away, the road out of Nazareth was choked with Jews shuffling along at the pace of a tortoise, past overturned carts, flocks of gaggling geese, and donkeys lying prone under the weight of their burdens. The imposition of a poll tax had been punishment enough, but to be forced to register for it by returning to the town of their ancestors, was a double blow.

Narrator Two: The young and old were suffering most. It was bitterly cold, the market stalls were empty, and the wells were frozen over and surrounded by angry crowds shouting and shaking their fists.

Narrator One:

3. The Road to Nazareth

An elderly man was leading a donkey. A young pregnant woman was slumped over it. He left the path, and sought shade for her under a cluster of trees. Their branches were bare, the tiny buds torn from them by the hands of the hungry hordes.

[Music starts]

Narrator Two:

Congregation sings:

He pulled aside the rough branches, desperate to find succour for his ailing wife. He called for help, but none came. He dropped to the ground. He wept. He lay on the rough ground for a long time, the only sound her occasional yelps of pain.

As with gladness, men of old Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we Evermore be led to Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped To that lowly manger-bed; There to bend the knee before Him whom heaven and earth adore; So may we with willing feet Ever seek his mercy-seat.

As they offered gifts most rare At the manger rude and bare; So may we, with holy joy, Pure and free from sin's alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ! to Thee our heavenly King.

In the heavenly country bright, Need they no created light; Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown, Thou its Sun which goes not down; There for ever may we sing Alleluias to our King.

Narrator One: Then a bird burst into song… a bubbling cadenza like a spring brook… …he staggered to his feet…

The branches of the trees were no longer bare. Green shoots and leaves had miraculously appeared, buds had sprung to life, then cherries, mulberries and Sharon fruit. It was as though summer had arrived in the middle of winter, and time itself was running at the speed of a hunting hound.

Choir sings: When Joseph was an old man, an old man was he He married Virgin Mary, the Queen of Galilee.

Joseph and Mary walked through an orchard green There were cherries and berries, as thick as might be seen.

Mary said to Joseph, so meek and so mild: Joseph, gather me some cherries, for I am with child.

[Music continues under the narration]

Narrator Two:

Choir:

The old man looked at his young wife in despair. Had he sired her child? He doubted it. Could he provide for it? No, his rheumy hands could no longer even grip a saw or a measuring rod. Could he reach the cherries high in the trees? No, he could not.

And the child will be a god!

And the child will be a man!

A god born of man!

A child born of woman!

Of woman!

Choir sings: Then Joseph flew in anger, in anger flew he Let the father of the baby gather cherries for thee!

Then up spoke Jesus, from in Mary's womb: Bend down tall branches, that my mother might have some.

So bent down the branches, it touched Mary's hand.

“Oh look thou Joseph, I have cherries at command.”

of the empire who had travelled thousands of leagues to honour him, the man who had transformed Israel.

[Music ends] Narrator One: He listened politely as they paid tribute to his craftsmen and surveyors…

Narrator Two:

Then Joseph looked to heaven and heard a sound: “Your babe shall be Christ our heavenly King.”

…to his roads and bridges and aqueducts…

Narrator One:

Narrator One:

…and of course to his great and glorious self.

The old man and his wife headed towards their place of registration in the Judean town of Bethlehem, from where King David had once reigned. But Judea was in turmoil. The Jews had refused to comply with the new tax, and the local Roman garrison was moving against them. Thick, black smoke filled the air. The villagers fled, choking on the acrid stink of their flocks’ burnt corpses. They sheltered in dank caves where snakes and lions took their toll. Some stumbled down the snowy hillsides at the point of Roman swords, while others clambered back up to reach shelter. Chaos reigned.

Narrator Two: But he soon grew tired of their adulation. Everyone wanted something from him. What was it these fawning foreigners desired?

Narrator One: “We wish to pay tribute to the King of the Jews.”

Narrator Two:

Narrator Two: “I am here,” replied Herod. “Here I am.”

The shepherds did their best to help the villagers, they gave them icy water from their meagre flasks and what little bread they had, but they were overwhelmed by the numbers. They drove their sheep ever higher. Below them a multitude of their countrymen stumbled blindly through the smoke. Some were trampled, others died of thirst and cold.

Narrator One: “Not you, great and glorious majesty. The… other one.”

5. The Birth of Christ Narrator One: [Music starts and continues under the narration] By day the shepherds protected their sheep from the predatory Romans, by night they tended the sick Jews, illuminated by the cruel light of the shining star. The farmland below was devastated, stripped naked by the invaders and their puppet King Herod, and there was no one to save them.

Narrator Two: Herod smiled the smile of a viper about to release its venom.

“Which other one?” he asked politely.

Congregation sings:

4. King Herod Ensemble piece [Music pauses, then continues under the narration] Narrator Two: In Jerusalem King Herod stood on the steps of his shining white temple, his face wreathed in a happy smile. Golden birds crafted by the finest Eastern toymakers hovered above his head, blazing meteors of multi-coloured fire illuminated the night sky, and teams of puppeteers manipulated giant paper dragons which galloped down the temple slopes terrifying and delighting the populace.

They were mere playthings of course, exotic diplomatic gifts designed to flatter him. The real flattery was the presence of this caravanserai of wise strangers from beyond the boundaries

O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth The ever lasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight…

[Music continues under the narration] Narrator Two: Bethlehem was full. Newcomers were sleeping like rows of pickled fish in each room and stairwell, and on every roof and courtyard floor.

Narrator One:

Narrator Two:

The old man and his wife were lucky, if luck’s the appropriate word. They found themselves in the part of town where respectable Jews never went. It was the home of the Nabateans from the far deserts, refugees who’d fled brutality and torture in their own lands and had risked the dangerous and harrowing journey to Judea to start a new life.

The wise men and women had been waiting for hours in Herod’s courtyard, surrounded by mosaics, sparkling fountains and painted servants with trays of canapés. Young Jewish boys with coiffured ringlets and ivory harps sang the poetry of King David, and when they had sung every psalm, their choir master nodded and they started all over again.

Congregation sings:

Narrator One:

How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given!

So god imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven.

No ear can hear his coming But in this world of sin Where meek souls will receive him still The dear Christ enters in…

Above them in his council room Herod paced angrily round a vast cedarwood table covered in ancient scrolls and manuscripts, with a gaggle of religious advisers in his wake.

“And this star of which the foreigners speak is foreseen in other holy scrolls too?” he barked.

Narrator Two: “Indeed, your majesty. In the book of Numbers it prophesies,

[Music continues under the narration] Narrator Two: The sun had long set but discordant music still rang through the alleyways. There was an intense aroma of exotic cooking and the rank tang of open sewers. Market traders barked out their wares, pickled chickens’ feet and necklaces made from painted seed pods. Naked children ran hither and thither. A stranger with dusty hair and a long staff took firm hold of the donkey’s bridle and led the couple towards a shack where dour men with bloodshot eyes were drinking a pungent brew from crudely-made cups.

Then shall come a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.”

Narrator One: “A scepter,” snapped Herod. “So he’ll be a king?”

Narrator Two: “He will, your majesty. It also says, The God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed.”

Congregation sings: Narrator One: O holy child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin, and enter in Be born to us today.

We hear the Christmas angels The great, glad tidings tell.

O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

“A king? With a kingdom? Here in my country?” He grabbed his adviser by the throat. “Where? Where can I find him?”

Narrator Two: “According to the book of Micah, in Bethlehem, your majesty.

[Music ends]

Bethlehem though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall come forth he that is to be the ruler of Israel.”

Narrator One:

Narrator One:

Behind the shack was a lean-to. The stranger drove out the chickens and geese, went outside, and stood guard. The woman sank to the ground. Her time had come. She cried out and gave birth among the flies and the detritus. The old man emptied a discarded food trough, refilled it, and lay the tiny boy in the fresh straw. An ox lumbered over and licked him like a newborn calf. Then it slowly dropped to its knees and stared at the child, the twinkling star reflected in its cow eyes.

“Bethlehem?” roared Herod. “That dunghole?”

6. In the Palace of King Herod [Music starts and continues under the narration]

Narrator Two: “It would appear to be the case, your majesty.”

Narrator One: He rushed to the window. “Silence!” he bellowed, and the harps and piping voices ground to a halt. “Good news!” he roared to the Wise Company and waved an ancient scroll at them. “Bethlehem… in Judea. He’s there! You must go! Now! Search diligently for the child. And when you have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also… please.”

The astrologers and magicians left off their feasting, called for their camels, and set off towards the Judean hills. Herod waved

an enthusiastic farewell, but the words of the prophet echoed round his head.

All meekly wrapped in swaddling bands And in a manger laid.

“Yet out of thee shall come forth the Ruler of Israel?” he murmured. “I think not.”

[Music continues under the narration] Narrator Two:

[Music continues then ends]

7. The Shepherds Watched [Music starts]

This child would end their suffering, cure their pain, and would rule over a kingdom which would have no end. The shepherds were amazed. Exile, poverty, war and occupation – this had been their birthright. But now, out of nowhere, they were being offered the second coming of the Kingdom of King David.

Congregation sings: While shepherds watched [Music continues under narration] Narrator Two: The Sons of Light had known the foreign sages would come, had known they would visit the apostate king, and had known this would herald the birth of the messiah. Now their entire community, thirty men and boys, were making a final pilgrimage through the hills and deserts of Israel, and had reached Judea. It was a cloudy night, and the rocky terrain was frozen and dangerous. But in a single instant the star broke through a cloud, and light flooded the hills. Below they could see shepherds, huddled against the cold; poor people, good Jews who should be the first to know.

The shepherds were consumed with fear. Who were these strange figures silhouetted on the skyline? What were they saying?

They rose to their feet and followed the Sons of Light down the hill.

There were cold-eyed Romans on the road, checkpoints at the crossroads, and rough barricades topped with sharp metal stakes all around them. But no one laid a hand on the procession of shepherds and holy men. It was as if they were invisible, inhabitants of another world unseen by their Roman occupiers.

Choir: Venite adoremus Dominum.

All glory be to God on high And to the earth be peace.

Good will henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease.

[Music ends] Narrator Two:

Narrator One: They fell to the ground shaking, and buried their heads in their rough shawls. The youngest was sobbing with terror.

They came at last to Bethlehem. A solitary Son of Light was squatting on his haunches outside the stable. He pulled aside a rough, sacking curtain and the shepherds and their companions entered.

Choir sings: Narrator One: Adeste fideles, laeti triumphantes Venite! Venite! in Bethlehem Natum videte Regem angelorum Venite adoremus Dominum.

[Music continues under narration] Narrator Two:

They could see nothing, and all they could hear was the soft chewing of a ruminating ox. But when their eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, they were able to make out a man and woman attending to their newborn child. The shepherds stood silent, awkward, shivering in the cold air. Then the youngest stepped forward and, with hands chapped from the winter’s cold, brushed a stray piece of straw from the baby’s face.

The Sons of Light came down the hill towards them, “Be not afraid,” they called.

[Music starts]

Narrator One:

Choir sings (a cappella):

Their demeanor was calm, their voices gentle. They spoke of a king, a priest, a leader, who even now was being born in the squalor of Bethlehem.

In the bleak midwinter

8. The Magi Choir sings: [Music starts] Venite adoremus Dominum.

The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed

Narrator One: Slowly the great caravan of philosophers moved through the desert following the twinkling star, its every movement observed by Herod’s spies hovering like hunting hawks among the dunes. Eventually they came to a ridge. Below them were the flickering lights of Bethlehem. They stopped, and erected a great tent trimmed with silk and feathers. The senior men went inside and began to discuss a strategy for their entry into the little town.

[Music ends]

didn’t give him the information he desired. They should go home and leave the child in the hands of the Sons of Light, who would keep him sheltered and teach him the ways of their God. [Music starts] Narrator Two: The Magi agreed, mounted their camels, and headed off into the Syrian wastes. The leader of the Sons of Light watched them depart. In his hand he held a purse containing thirty gold pieces, and a letter written in a woman’s hand.

Narrator Two: Narrator One: But Caspar and her priestesses slipped out of the camp and entered Bethlehem disguised as servants and washerwomen.

They listened at the doors of the great noblemen, and through the windows of the houses of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but heard nothing of a babe born to be a king. They asked the shopkeepers and knife grinders, potters and dyers, but no one could help them.

Herod looked around him at the camp the Wise Ones had abandoned and his lip curled. Ahead was Bethlehem, the home of the mewling, puking, usurper. He had become a problem, which like an infestation of beetles in his kitchen, needed solving swiftly and efficiently. He gave the order and his men moved forward.

Narrator One:

[Music stops – tubular bells – then starts]

Then a hand fell on Caspar’s shoulder, and a soft voice whispered “Come”. It was a tall man with wild hair, ragged clothes and a crude staff. She followed him to the poorest quarter till they came to a tumbledown shebeen, beside which was a rudimentary hut for the animals. The man pulled the sacking curtain to one side, and light blazed out like a beacon in the desert. “Send for the wise men,” said the man. “But make haste. Your time is short.”

Narrator Three (Herod):

[Music starts]

[interrupting the choir] Thank you choir.

Congregation sings:

[music stops]

We Three Kings

[to audience] I won’t keep you long. You’re clearly enjoying yourselves, your enthusiasm is palpable, and your voices are in the main, divine. But I do wish to clarify a few issues, particularly in regard to my own role in the minor disturbance that took place later that evening.

[Music ends] Narrator Two: Caspar had lit myrrh and frankincense to ward off the bad humours which engulfed the noxious stable. The greasy black smoke rose like a pyre through the torn thatch and up into the sky. Balthazar, Melchior and the rest were on their knees. The little family were twisting with embarrassment at being the centre of so much respectful attention. A scribe was asking them the story of their lives, an artist was drawing their picture, an alchemist was taking samples of the dung, the straw, and the manger. A sketch was made of the entire assembly with the baby in the middle. One day it would be transformed into a mural spanning an entire wall of the great assembly room in Mosel.

9. King Herod’s Plea Choir sings: The Coventry Carol

[music starts and continues under the narration] Unfortunately I was unable to conduct the operation myself.

My wife and I were otherwise engaged as guests of honour at a gala concert in aid of sick children. But the independent inquiry I set up has now stated categorically that contrary to a few mischievous accounts, there was no “slaughter of the innocents”. In fact there were remarkably few casualties, and virtually no innocents among them. As always my palace guard did a magnificent job, and I must stress this, when they found themselves under attack, they used only a modicum of force, even though several of them sustained injuries including a damaged wrist and a badly broken tooth.

Narrator One: Eventually the Wise Company had seen what they had come to see, and their work was done. But as they were breaking camp, Caspar spoke to her companions quietly and urgently. They should not tell Herod where the boy was, she said. They had come here to witness the birth of a boy-king, they should not put his life at risk by revealing his whereabouts to a vain and puffed up warlord. Nor should they return the way they had come. Herod would happily wreak his revenge on them if they

Let me make it clear, what we had here were violent insurgents, dedicated to the overthrow of the Israelite Kingdom, the replacement of its leadership, i.e. myself, with a young man… or possibly child… whose sole ambition would have been to undermine your way of life and your financial security. This would have been unacceptable to me, and indeed to our Roman guests, whose generosity in upgrading our communications network and water distribution system cannot be overstated.

Indeed our friends from the seventeenth Roman legion gave their generous support to my guards on the night in question by providing intelligence and technical back up, although at no time were they involved in active policing or in the incident which led to the unfortunate loss of life.

10. Finale

I repeat there was no slaughter – the figures you may have seen are inaccurate, the final number is likely to be well under two hundred dead. There are certainly a disproportionately high number of young people contained within this figure, and there must be no shying away from that fact at all. But these casualties were either collateral damage from crossfire exchanges, or youths misguidedly engaged in the violence itself. I also understand that the tragic loss of life at the kindergarten was perpetrated by the terrorists in a sick and vicious attempt to discredit our forces.

So rest assured, this was an isolated incident, the issue has been successfully resolved, and I’m pleased to announce that five members of my guard who particularly distinguished themselves during the Bethlehem peace-keeping operation will shortly be receiving the Lion of Judah Medal for Bravery. [music continues, then pauses]

Thank you for listening. [music ends] Narrator One: The family were passed from house to house, and from cottage to cottage, along back routes used by smugglers and runaway slaves…

And guided by the Sons of Light On Christmas day, on Christmas day, They went to see the babe at night On Christmas day in the morning.

Then gave him gifts then slipped away On Christmas day, on Christmas day, Back home to distant Syr-i-ay On Christmas day in the morning.

Narrator Two: If soldiers were seen, the child was buried in a dung cart, or hidden in a hay wain…

And shepherds saw a star above On Christmas day, on Christmas day, And found the boy and gave him love On Christmas day in the morning.

Narrator One: But they were safe enough now; no one was looking for a baby any longer, he was missing presumed dead in some unmarked pit in the grieving town of Bethlehem.

Narrator Two: Eventually the family arrived at Caesarea. The three ships were still waiting in the harbour. The Sons of Light gave Caspar’s letter and the purse of gold to the captain, and he took the family below where they hid among the copper ingots and amphora of olive oil. Then they set sail, and headed south past the ancient kingdom of the Philistines, till finally they made their way back on deck, and ahead of them was the mighty empire of the Egyptians.

Narrator One: There the family was placed in the care of a community of wise Jews known as ‘The Children of Ezekiel’. And as the boy grew, they taught him the holy laws and how not to be ensnared by them. They taught him how to heal the sick, and care for the needy. And he learned the words of the prophets of old, and how one day soon, very soon, out of the House of David, a messiah would arise, a prophet, a god, the Son of Man, and how the day of his birth would be remembered forever.

Then Herod rode to Bethlehem On Christmas day, on Christmas day, And all the babes, he slaughtered them On Christmas day in the morning.

But Jesus and his mum and dad On Christmas day, on Christmas day, Escaped the sword which made them glad On Christmas day in the morning.

They saw three ships and climbed aboard On Christmas day, on Christmas day, And hid where oil and dates were stored On Christmas day in the morning.

They sailed beside the desert sand On Christmas day, on Christmas day, And soon were safe in Egypt’s land On Christmas day in the morning.
