Right away! Benjie! PRESTON: MASTER: So I'll have to pay To prison? that debt, or go to prison.
[carrying a tray of drinks]
Benjie
PRESTON: That’s right.
MASTER: Preston! I can’t be responsible for your debts any longer. As I’ve told you so many times the farm is in trouble. I alrady owe Mr Covey so much money. He’s getting impatient and is demanding payment. I don’t know what I can do...
NARRATOR: Preston had his eye on Harriet all right. But for the moment he had more serious things on his mind. Once again he’d gotten into trouble...gambling of course. He’d lost a ton of money and was being threathened with jail if he didn’t pay up. He wanted his daddy to bail him out yet again. sfp

Sell some of us?
Benjie
Mr. Corey, he told the Marse: “How are you fixing to pay that debt, cos you ain’t gonna get no more credit!” The old Marse, he turn as white as a sheet and he say: “I don’t know what I can do...” Then Mr. Corey, as mean as a snake, he say: “Then you must sell some of your slaves to cover your debts... ”.
Hattie! He gonna sell Josiah and big Jo and Sol... Them’s the strong ones. To get the best price, he have to sell them South.
[Horrified silence]
H.
Josiah! Oh no!
Rit
Benjie! The old Marse would never do that!
Benjie
I knows it! But I just can’t believe the Marse would sell one of us. Why, we’s like family!
How else can he get the money? He gotta pay that debt. Now Marse Preston done come home, it ain’t the same.
H.
Going North!

Lord!
And so Harriet became the Moses of her people... For the moment she gave up her search for Josiah and became a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
Chor.
Narration (not necessarily Benjie):
f
(Narration)
Narrator Benjie
In the next few years she returned eighteen times to the South and rescued over three hundred staves. But it was increasingly difficult to elude the patrols... Then, there were the reward posters everywhere, offering huge sums of money for information about runaways and in particular about this Moses. Of course the identity of Moses was a closely held secret. Mr. Garrett knew and one or two of his abolitionist friends........ It was through them Harriet eventually met up again with Josiah... she had just got back from one of her journeys South...
G.
[Enter Police Sergeant and Overseer... they knock at Mr.Garret’s door... then again]
SERGEANT: Can we take a look?
[Enter Mr.Garrett] Can I help thee?
[Sergeant hards him a leaflet...]
Surely, but why?
G.
SERGEANT: (embarrassed) Why yes, Mr. Garrett, I’m afraid so.
[hornfied]
[They search the house, the Overseer avidly, the Sergeant unwillingly]
SERGEANT: (to Overseer) Sure you information is correct?
So now thee has the right to search my house for runaways?
[to Garrett]
G.
OVERSEER: Damn right it is! I know they harbor runaways.
SERGEANT: None here now! You’re just wasting my time.
Good day, Sir! Sorry to have disturbed you.
[Exit with Overseer]
[Garrett watches them leave then enters his house and leads Harriet and Josiah out of a hiding place]

[Mr. Garrett watches horrified as Josiah is led away. He follows.]
Harriet didn’t learn till much later that Josiah has been taken. Determined to save her family from Preston, she made her way South yet again... But this new Fugitive Slave Act meant not onlt escaping from the farm, but then travelling that long road North, all the way to Canada. Only there were slaves safe from the patrols. It was all much more dangerous.

188 Benjie PRESTON
When Preston learned of Ben’s escape his fury knew no bounds. He got all his friends to join the patrol and they set out in pursuit. Meanwhile reward posters were put up everywhere... The offer for the capture of Moses was increased to forty thousand dollars.
Benjie
Yes, that right – forty thousand dollars. Plenty of folks would like to have that sum of money. But nobody betrayed Harriet.
