This work was commissioned by Chamber Choir Ireland and written for the sixteen voices of that group. It features four soloists and an ensemble of twelve other voices. At the discretion of the music director these may be the same soloists in each movement, or they may change between movements.

With some simple editing in the chorus part, it is also possible for the work to be performed by eight solo voices. Alternatively, a larger chorus can be employed with four guest soloists in traditional oratorio style.

To allow for the use of a countertenor on the solo mezzo part, alternatives (not exceeding E5) have been given.

I am indebted to my friend and colleague, the opera, theatre director and scholar Conor Hanratty, for his invaluable help in choosing the texts for this work.

Now there was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day: and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. (Luke 16:19–31)

2. Chorale

As it fell out upon one day, Rich Divès made a feast, And he invited all his friends, And gentry of the best.

Then Lazarus laid him down and down And down at Divès’ door: Some meat and drink, brother, Diverus, Bestow upon the poor.

Thou’rt none of my brothers, Lazarus, That liest begging at my door; No meat, nor drink will I give thee, Nor bestow upon the poor. (Child Ballad)

Tempestuous Euroclydon!

I stuffed a shirt or two into my old carpet-bag, tucked it under my arm, and started for Cape Horn and the Pacific. Quitting the good city of old Manhatto, I duly arrived in New Bedford. It was on a Saturday night in December at last came to a dim sort of light not far from the docks, and heard a forlorn creaking in the air.

Poor Lazarus there, chattering his teeth against the curbstone for his pillow, and shaking off his tatters with his shiverings, he might plug up both ears with rags, and put a corn-cob into his mouth, and yet that would not keep out the tempestuous Euroclydon. Euroclydon! Says old Dives, in his red silken wrapper. Nonsense! Phoey! Claptrap! says old Dives. What a fine frosty night; how Orion glitters; what northern lights! Let them talk of their oriental summer climes; give me the privilege of making my own summer. (Herman Melville Moby Dick)

Then Lazarus laid him down and down, All under Divès’ wall: Some meat, some drink, brother Diverus, For hunger starve I shall.

5. Narrative – story-teller

But what thinks Lazarus? Can he warm his blue hands by holding them up to the grand northern lights? Would not Lazarus rather be in Sumatra than here? Would he not far rather lay him down lengthwise along the line of the equator; yea, go down the fiery pit to keep out this frost?

Now Lazarus lies frozen on the curbstone before the door of Dives. Yet Dives himself, he too lives like a Czar in an ice palace made of frozen sighs and being temperate, he only drinks the tepid tears of orphans. (Adapted from Herman Melville Moby Dick)

6. Dogs’ Chorus

Then Divès sent out his hungry dogs, To bite him as he lay; They hadn’t the power to bite one bite, But licked his sores away.

8. Lament

Nay, sure, he’s not in hell:

He’s in Arthur’s bosom, if ever man went to Arthur’s bosom.

He made a finer end and went away as any christom child.

He parted just between twelve and one, even at the turning o’ the tide. I saw him fumble with the sheets and play with flowers and smile upon his fingers’ ends,

I knew there was but one way; for his nose was as sharp as a pen, and babbled of green fields.

He cried out three or four times. ‘God, God, God!’

Now I bid he should not think of God;

There was no need to trouble with such thoughts yet.

So he bade me lay more clothes on his feet:

Stephen McNeff

Stephen McNeff (b. 1951) studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has worked extensively in opera and music theatre, holding residences at Contact Theatre in Manchester, the Banff Centre, the Cabrillo Festival in California, Lawrence University and Comus Music Theatre in Canada. From 2005–2008 he was composer in residence with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra where he wrote three major orchestral works, Heiligenstadt, Secret Destinations, Sinfonia and the choral work Weathers. He won the British Composer Award for Best Stage Work in 2007. At the Royal Opera he is known for Clockwork (from Philip Pullman’s novel) and Gentle Giant
