Forord Sommerferie i Blekinge (BVN 123) De “10 mindre klaverstykker” med titlen Sommerferie i Blekinge (1916) er ikke bevaret i komplet form. Den eneste kilde, der foreligger, er et manuskript i Rued Langgaards håndskrift, som er mangelfuldt, idet de første og sidste blade med dele af musikken er forsvundet. Således mangler hele det første klaverstykke med titlen Paa rejse og det meste af stykke II, Møde (kun slutningen af dette stykke er bevaret). Af stykke X, Aften med Dans, findes et stort fragment, men slutningen mangler. Manuskriptet foreligger i Det Kongelige Bibliotek i København (RLS 83,2). På første side har Langgaard blot skrevet “Klaverstykker 1916”; værkets egentlige titel og satstitlerne på de to første stykker fremgår af andre kilder.

I 2008 bad Rued Langgaard Selskabet komponisten Niels Marthinsen (f. 1963) om at komplettere værket med henblik på at skabe en ‘opførelsesversion’. Marthinsen komponerede en helt ny førstesats (Paa Rejse) og lod denne sats glide over i det bevarede slutningsfragment af Langgaards sats II, Møde. Niels Marthinsen komponerede desuden en slutning til den ukomplette sats X, Aften med Dans, og inkorporerede her en reference til førstesatsen, således at hans tilføjelser kom til at danne en ramme omkring det, der er bevaret af Langgaards værk. Den således kompletterede version blev uropført af Berit Johansen Tange i 2008.

I 2018 udgav Rued Langgaard Udgaven satserne III-IX, de stykker som er bevaret komplet, samt sats X, som blev forsynet med en kort, konstrueret slutning baseret på Marthinsens version. Disse satser blev publiceret i bind 3 af Rued Langgaard: Samlede værker for klaver udgivet af Berit Johansen Tange, Ole Ugilt Jensen og Bendt Viinholt Nielsen (Edition Wilhelm Hansen, 2018).

Titel og satstitler refererer til et sommerophold i 1913, altså tre år før værket blev komponeret, hvor den dengang 20-årige komponist ferierede i Kyrkhult i Blekinge (Sverige).

Preface Summer Holiday in Blekinge (BVN 123) The ‘Ten short piano pieces’ with the title Summer Holiday in Blekinge (1916) have not been preserved in their complete form. The only existing source is a manuscript in Rued Langgaard’s hand that lacks the first and last pages with sections of the music. This means that the entire first piano piece with the title Travelling is missing as well as most of Piece II, Meeting (only the conclusion of this piece has been preserved). A large fragment exists of Piece X, Evening with Dancing, but the conclusion is missing. The manuscript is to be found at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen (RLS 83,2). On the first page, Langgaard has merely written ‘Piano Pieces 1916’; the real title and titles of the movements in the first two pieces derives from other sources.

In 2008, the Rued Langgaard Society asked the Danish composer Niels Marthinsen (b. 1963) to add to the work, the aim being to create a ‘performance version’. Marthinsen composed a complete new first piece (Travelling) and allowed it to merge with the preserved concluding fragment of Langgaard’s second piece, Meeting. Niels Marthinsen further composed a conclusion to the incomplete Piece X, Evening with Dancing, and in it incorporated a reference to the first piece, so that his additions came to form a frame round what has been preserved of Langgaard’s work. This supplemented version was given its first performance by Berit Johansen Tange in 2008.

In 2018, the Rued Langgaard Edition published the pieces III-IX, the movements that exist in their entirety, as well as Piece X, which was provided with a brief, constructed conclusion based on Marthinsen’s version. These pieces were published in Volume 3 of Rued Langgaard: Collected Works for Piano published by Berit Johansen Tange, Ole Ugilt Jensen and Bendt Viinholt Nielsen (Edition Wilhelm Hansen, 2018).

The overall title and titles of the individual pieces refer to a summer stay in 1913, i.e. three years before the work was composed, when the then 20-year-old composed was on holiday in Kyrkhult in Blekinge (Sweden).
