Gertrude Stein has been a key figure in my writing process, both as an artist and as a woman. With Stein, repetition does not necessarily mean verbatim reiteration, but serves rather as an opportunity for variation, development, and ultimately for creating new context. Her prose is delightfully bereft of narrative, with her writing style straying far from the classic structure of a beginning, a middle and an end. Her words are both timeless and candid, and they hold a precision and simplicity that has truly been an inspiration in the process of creating this music. This candor seems to be a recurring theme in her life as a woman and mentor. In "Food", the rhythmic properties of the prose have been allowed to dominate in an intuitive fashion, in close interaction with a rigorous form bordering on cubism. These two contrasts have been my main centerpieces. In 1914, Gertrude Stein wrote a collection of poems called "Food" - brief, unique portraits of food and ingredients, and this work has attempted to turn five of these poems into music. Food is not only a necessity for human survival, but also a source of cultural identity, social interaction, and aesthetic enjoyment. For me, it is rooted in an act of love that reaches not only inwards, in the form of nourishment, but also outwards, to my fellow human beings and to the planet itself, making Stein's words feel just as relevant today as they did a century ago.
