Composer’s Note Semi-Suite for violin, clarinet, piano and percussion was first a duo for piano four-hands written for my wife, Darlene, in 1980. In 1981, I created a new version for violin and orchestra, commissioned by Stetson University, with a new second movement, Ductia, in place of the original Limerick. The present version, commissioned by Voices of Change, adds clarinet and percussion parts to the reduction for violin and piano of the concerto version, and it may be performed by violin and piano alone.

The first movement, The All-Purpose Rag, is built on an ostinato bass spelling the nickname B-E-D-E. Ductia is a two-part canon based on a Medieval dance, which I originally set in a version for solo harp. Jig is a simple setting of the dance rhythm, with an ostinato D for the solo violin. Tango is, again, based on an ostinato. The fifth movement is a repeat of The All-Purpose Rag, hence its title.
