Composer Note These two Mirror Sonnets are settings of poems by Fred Curchack for the Dallas premiere of Curchack’s 1989 musical theater work, Sexual Mythology, Part I (The Underworld). A three-part canon for one, two or three voices (with optional violin for Voice II or clarinet for Voice II or III) is set over a thirteen-bar repeating guitar pattern, with introduction and coda. The two texts provide opposing views of the age-old conflict between the world of reality and the world of art. The first sonnet argues for reality over art and concludes, “…though I sing with all by being, this song is as of nothing to a kiss.” The second sonnet, conversely, argues for the superiority of art over reality and concludes, “…since our life is short and art is long, a kiss is as of nothing to a song.”

Neither rhythm, melody nor rhyme Can ever hope to recreate how much More than art of any place or time Is the beauty of the way you touch My senses, warm my heart and cool my head Of all idle dreaming of your charms.

For every wish is granted in our bed, And all desires realized in your arms.

I beg you to forgive me this one thing: For, though it’s doomed to failure from the start, Still I can’t refrain. I need to sing Of your perfection with imperfect art.

And, though I sing with all by being, this Song is as of nothing to a kiss.

Neither face nor figure, mind nor heart Can ever hope to live up to how much More than mortal beauty is in art, Which can transform your form with just one touch Into imagination and transcend Aging, sickness and decay. For death Has no dominion where there is no end, And art sings on, even with no breath.
