REMEMBERING JFK (An American Elegy) for Narrator and Orchestra
commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC, Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director, through a grant from the John and June Hechinger Commissioning Fund for New Orchestral Works

Excerpts from President Kennedy’s speeches were chosen for use by the composer. The text is as follows: January 9, 1961, to the Massachusetts State Legislature, Boston, Massachusetts: Today, the eyes of all people are truly upon us–and our government… at every level, must be as a city upon a hill–constructed and inhabited by men aware of their grave trust and their great responsibilities. For those to whom much is given, much is required. And when at some future date the high court of history sits in judgment on each one of us… our success or failure, will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage–with the courage to stand up to one’s enemies–and the courage to stand up, when necessary, to one’s own associates–the courage to resist public pressure as well as private greed? Secondly, were we truly men… with perceptive judgment… of our own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others–with enough wisdom to know what we did not know, and enough candor to admit it? Third, were we truly men of integrity… men whom neither financial gain nor political ambition could ever divert from the fulfillment of our sacred trust? Finally, were we truly men of dedication[,]… compromised by no private obligation or aim,… devoted solely to serving the public good and the national interest? January 10, 1961, Inaugural Address, Washington DC: The world is very different now. Man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe–the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike… Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty. To those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction. So let us begin anew– remembering... that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin. And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth… knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own. June 10, 1963, “The Strategy of Peace”, Commencement address at American University: I have chosen this time and place to discuss the most important topic on earth: world peace. What kind of peace do I mean?... genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children. Let us focus on a more practical, more attainable peace–based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions. For peace is a process–a way of solving problems. With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor–it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement. And if we cannot end our differences, at least we can make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.
