Preface / Programme Note The three small piano pieces collectively called WATERWAYS was composed in 2008-2009 for Anne Marie Fjord Abildskov and they are dedicated to her. You will hear traces of earlier piano works of mine – GROOVING from 1968 and ACHILLEUS AND THE TORTOISE from 1983 – in these new pieces. The first movement is characterized by echo-like sounds, which also appear in GROOVING. Semitones are overlayered and sound simultaniously, and then they are muted one by one to give a reminiscence of the initial sound. In this new movement an extra echo is added, like an extra skim of the stone across the water surface – three skims, actually. In the second movement you may hear traces of ACHILLEUS AND THE TORTOISE. The left and right hand both play arpeggio-like scale patterns. The music is shimmering, like a moiré on a water surface, with constantly changing, very short durations. In the third movement the pattern of irregular durations is maintained and expanded, but only in fragments – and you may catch a glimpse of a new melody emerging. Per Nørgård

Forord / Programnote De tre små klaverstykker samlet under titlen VANDVEJE (WATERWAYS) er komponeret 20082009 og tilegnet Anne Marie Fjord Abildskov. Der er i de tre stykkers motiver forbindelser tilbage til to af mine tidligere klaverværker: GROOVING fra 1968 og ACHILLES OG SKILDPADEN fra 1983. Den første sats er præget af ekkovirkninger, som også forekommer i GROOVING: en følge af halvtoner klinger over hinanden, og umiddelbart derefter dæmpes de samme toner, således at efterindtrykket af de dæmpede toner afspejler den oprindelige rækkefølge. I denne nye sats er ekstra ekko tilføjet – som “smut” over en vandflade – tre gange. I anden sats findes reminiscenser af ACHILLES OG SKILDPADEN, nemlig arpeggio-lignende højreog venstrehånds skalaer. Men de enkelte toner glimter nu, som reflekser i en vandoverflade, som et moiré, af konstant vekslende, meget korte varigheder. I tredje sats udfoldes og udvides mønstret af uregelmæssige varigheder, men kun brudstykkevis – og en ny melodi anes. Per Nørgård, 2009
NOTES ABOUT NOTATION AND SPECIAL FEATURES 1 ) Note values / durations The durations appearing in the very beginning of the first movement may be described as ”immancipated” triplets/sixtuplets/quintuplets etc. Instead of having ”irrational” values like these always appearing in multiples, to cover a single (or multiple) beat(s) within a certain time-signature framework, they appear here individually, uprooted, so to speak, and liberated from the framework of full beats. These ”immancipated” irrational values were used also in the earlier work for piano, FRAGMENT II, from 1959-1961. The fractions given about the very first system indicate the duration like this:
