Commissioned by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with the aid of funds supplied by the Feeney Trust. First performances on 21, 22 and 23 December by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simon Halsey at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Instrumentation 2 Flutes (both with low ‘b’) 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets in Bb 2 Bassoons 4 Horns in F 3 Trumpets in Bb 3 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion (2 Players) Side Drum Bass Drum Suspended Cymbal Tambourine Tam-tam Xylophone Crotales

COMPOSER’S NOTE Nativity Prelude was composed for the 2004 annual CBSO Christmas concert. As such, it is an attempt to realise in musical terms the nativity story as told in St. Luke’s gospel, Chapter 2, verses 8 – 19. Of the three sections, the first (Lento) represents the shepherds ‘keeping watch over their flocks at night’, and their terrified reaction (‘and they were afraid’), to the visitation of the angels, first signalled by a fanfare-type theme on muted trumpets. The second (Allegro Vivace) suggests their hurrying to Bethlehem in response to the angel’s ‘good tidings of great joy’, the climax of which – their arrival at the stable sheltering the holy family – is a triumphant return of the angels’ fanfare. The first section is inspired by the final words of St. Luke’s account (‘But Mary kept these things and pondered them in her heart’) and has the character of a lullaby for the infant Jesus. Four musical sources are used as material in the work. Two of them are from carols of my own (Torches and Nowell). The others are both traditional: The Austrian folk-carol Hirtenlied (Shepherd’s Song) and the Medieval English Song of the Nuns of Chester. John Joubert
