NOTE ON PERCUSSION
Suspended Metals: A rack with hanging and overlapping metallic objects, organized from high to low. This should almost certainly include ankle bells, multiple jingle bells (both on a tree and on belts), multiple elephant bells, Noah bells, brass bells on cords. Chajchas and other dry instruments could be added to create texture but the primary sound should be metallic and slightly chaotic. All of these should be lightly touching and overlapping so striking one area activates two or three instruments; bells already grouped together will make this setup less taxing. A mark-tree could be deployed provided it is touching multiple other instruments to prevent it from doing That Thing. This “instrument” is notated on a 5-line staff representing the different areas of the rack and is spatial, rather than precise, notation. Rolls should speed up and slow down ad lib. with dynamics, and using four mallets (perhaps of different density and material) should help create an active, engaging sound.
The two racks in this piece do not need to be identical — more cousins than siblings. Ideally these will be placed as far away from one another on the stage as possible. Although they are notated on two staves, it doesn’t matter which player plays which rack; whatever makes the most sense given the choreography which governs the distribution of percussion instruments in the given space.
