MARTYR (2008) for chorus and orchestra
Full score
NOVELLO
MARTYR Duration c. 17’ Instrumentation SATB chorus SATB solo 3 Trumpets in Bb (3rd off-stage) Timpani Organ (optional) String Orchestra: (minimum desks – 2.2.2.2.1) Text Quia tu et arca sanctifecacionis tuae. Sacerdotes tuae induant iusticiam et sancti tui laetentur in bonis. For you are the ark of your holiness. Your priests shall clothe themselves in justice and your saints shall rejoice in good things. Albane sacrifeca diis nostris “Alban, sacrifice to our Gods.” taken from an anonymous 8th century manuscript of "The Martyrdom of St Alban" (originally 6th century) translation published in "Alban's Buried Towns" by Rosalind Niblett and Isobel Thompson (Oxford, Oxbow ISBN 1-84217-149-6) © Robert Niblett. All rights reserved. International Copyright Secured. Reprinted by Permission. LAMENT! for Diocletian's fiery sword Works busy as the lightning; but instinct With malice ne'er to deadliest weapon linked Which God's ethereal store-houses afford: Against the Followers of the incarnate Lord It rages; some are smitten in the field-Some pierced to the heart through the ineffectual shield Of sacred home;--with pomp are others gored And dreadful respite. Thus was Alban tried, England's first Martyr, whom no threats could shake; Self-offered victim, for his friend he died, And for the faith; nor shall his name forsake That Hill, whose flowery platform seems to rise By Nature decked for holiest sacrifice. [William Wordsworth (1770-1850), Ecclesiastical Sonnets (VI)]
Martyr Dei, qui unicum patris sequendo filium victis triumphans hostibus, victor fruens caelestibus,
Martyr of God, you who triumph, your enemies overcome, by following the only son of the Father and as a victor partake of the heavenly,
tui precatus munere nostrum reatum delue arcens mali contagium, vitae removens tedium.
wash away our iniquity by the gift of your prayer, warding off the infection of evil and taking away the weariness of life.
Soluta sunt iam vincula tui sacrati corporis, nos solve vinclis saeculi. amore filii dei.
Now the bonds of your holy body are loosened, Loosen us from the bonds of this world through the love of the Son of God
[MS 391, (c. 1065): Cambridge, Corpus Christi Coll., The Portiforium of St Wulfstan]
Notes Martyr was commissioned by St Albans Chamber Choir in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their founding. It was premiered by the St Albans Chamber Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in St Albans Abbey on 24 January, 2009 under the direction of John Gibbons. Martyr was written as a counterpart to Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (‘Nelson’ Mass), using the same orchestration as Haydn’s original version. In venues where an organ is present, the optional organ part should always be used. The four SATB solo parts should be performed by a group of singers placed to the side or to the front of the orchestra, away from the main chorus. Although written with individual ‘professional’ solo voices in mind, the solo parts may also be performed by a semi-chorus with, for example, two or three voices to a part. The central a cappella section can be performed as a stand-alone piece entitled Martyr Dei. This is available for purchase separately from Novello (Order number; NOV958331-02). Tarik O’Regan Cambridge, December 2008
Commissioned by St Albans Chamber Choir to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the choir’s foundation
