The “ss” sound should be producedwith themouthonly, not with or through the instrument. When making the "ss" sound: start with a smile-like mouth position w. the tongue placed forwards towards the teeth (aim for higher partials of the "ss" sound) -gently move to a trumpet-like mouth position w. the tongue placed loweror slightly more backwards in the mouth (aim for lower partials) and then move back. Focus on a gradual change and a continuous life in the sound of the partials. The sound / technique is almost inaudible but impacts the overall sound because the “ss”sound mixes with the whistle tones and flageolets, as a slight shadowchanging the environment and thereforthe sound changeswhat we expect to hearand makes the music thus more magical. Creating the sound,should visually not draw too much attention on stage. The movement can be done rather elegantly and still with a grand sonic effect. In general, the sound should be produced with more focus on highpitched air-sounds, than actually "saying the s".

Tremolo is measured or unmeasured dependent on what is stated in the bracket:
• Fluttertongue (flz.) is only unmeasured(relevant for fl.)
• Double tonguing is only measured (measure 80 –84)(relevant for fl.)
• Whistle tones (relevant for fl.)
An exploration of the partials of the specific toneisintended to stand alone or mix with the sound of the ensemble. The movement within the whistle tonesis intended to follow the physicality of the tone;not too fast movementsbetween the partials,andplease play around with the different partials in an order that explores the harmonicsin a nonlinear way.
A linear way of playing the overtonesisfrom the 1st partial (the fundamental) to the2nd partial(1 octave above the 1st partial), to the 3rd partial(octave + fifth above),to the4th partial (2 octaves above) etc. upwards followed by the downwardsgoing movement in reverse: 4th partial (2 octaves above), to the3rd partial(octave + fifth above), to the 2nd partial(octave above)to the 1st partial (the fundamental).
Instead, please do explore thetransition betweene.g., the2nd partial(octave above)to the4th partial(2 octaves above)tothe7th partial (2 octaves and a 7th above the 1st partial) tothe3rd partial(octave + fifth above), etc.).
This transition will invite a slower exploration of the whistle tonesand a different kind of physicality, sensitivity and explorationin the process offindingthe physical partial.
Aninspiration when playing the whistle tones, is the magical experience of the sea sparkle (morild); depicting the fragility and the unpredictability of the phenomenon.
A b o u t t h e p i e c e :
Mareel (Morild in Danish) is the nature phenomenon where the ocean seems to glow at night as phosphorescence on the ocean, also called sea sparkle.
Mareel is typically caused by Noctilucascintillans , a dinoflagellate that glows when disturbed and is found in oceans throughout much of the world. When the phenomenon can occur over larger areas it is called Milky Sea: A bioluminescent phenomenon observable on moonless nights, caused by luminous plankton and bacteria, where the sea becomes milky white with a slight glow allowing one to see one's ship. The sea shines from horizon to horizon like a field of fresh snow (when only the surface layers shine) or a cloud (when deeper layers also shine). The phenomenon occurs most often in the Indian Ocean and off Indonesia; and does not require disruption to start shining.

The piece Morild, written for Randers Kammerorkester, is inspired by this magical phenomenon of mareel, as well as the history of female artists across all genres, cultures, times and places, that has struggled to be able to live as artists with the expectation of also being the caretaker of a family, not being too outspoken, take too much space, attention, have too many opinions, etc. The fire, energy and effort it has demanded through history for these people to insist on their passion in combination with, or rebellion against, their time and culture, just because of their sex, is never to forget, diminish or oversee. Times are changing, step by step. Thank you for the deeply inspiring commission to Randers Kammerorkester.
The piece is dedicated to my sister Agnete Bertram, a beautiful human being; an immensely inspiring, sensitive and powerful visual artist and mother of four.
