During the musical development of the many new musical directions of the early 20th century, the general development for composers were to progressively include more instructions to the players in their scores, with the aim to pinpoint interpretation and sound of a piece. Leopold van der Pals compositions dates from 1898 to 1966. He mainly concentrates his musical expression through melody and harmony, rather than seeking technical effects in his pieces and gives general remarks for the direction of dynamics, tempo and playing instructions. In his early works, he is often more detailed in his instructions. But as he gets older, he starts to leave an increasing room for interpretation of his music by leaving his scores empty of instructions to the players, and thus creates a space for the interpreter what are larger than usual, also for his time. Some works he developed for performance with players and those manuscripts often contains suggestions written with pencil, but many scores are preserved as they were after he finished his composition and before collaborations started with the performers. The current version of this piece contains a collection of the instructions from the different pencil marks left by the composer. Also, instructions from the editor are added to the score, based on knowledge from studying the collected works by Leopold van der Pals. The result is a score suitable for the players and a standpoint for performance practice of the piece. A concise list of added notation are included below. Tobias van der Pals Copenhagen 2023
