Mauricio Kagel (1931–2008), whose work as a composer and multimedia artist was famed for its imagination, originality and humour, left a lasting imprint on the development of music theatre – the genre in which his radical innovations arguably proved most influential. At the same time, however, he also developed a highly personal aesthetic in other, more abstract genres. His impressive creative output encompasses not only stage, orchestral and chamber works for a great variety of different scorings, but also films, radio plays and essays. He received numerous awards for his compositions throughout his lifetime, including the Erasmus Prize (1998), the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2000) and the Großer Rheinischer Kunstpreis (2002). In 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Siegen.

Mauricio Kagel (1931–2008), der vor allem für den Einfallsreichtum, Eigenwillen und Humor seines kompositorischen und multimedialen Schaffens bekannt war, hatte nachhaltigen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung des Musiktheaters, das er mit seinen radikalen Neuerungen wohl am stärksten prägte. Daneben entwickelte er aber auch im Bereich der absoluten Musik eine eigenständige Ästhetik. Sein beeindruckendes Gesamtwerk umfasst nicht nur Bühnen-, Orchester- und Kammermusikwerke in unterschiedlichsten Besetzungen, sondern auch Filme, Hörspiele und Essays. Sein Schaffen wurde mit einer Fülle von Preisen gewürdigt. So erhielt er unter anderem den Erasmus-Preis (1998), den Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis (2000) und den Großen Rheinischen Kunstpreis (2002). Im Jahr 2007 wurde er von der Universität Siegen zum Ehrendoktor ernannt.
