Program Note: In the Arms of the Beloved was written in the wake of the premiere of Through the Ancient Valley, a 30 minute work commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for Yo-Yo Ma. The work included Persian musicians. That is, musicians actually from Iran – the country in which my parents were born. This look backward into my ancestral pool yielded many unexpected revelations. One of them was my re-acquaintance with Persian poetry. Most notable for me in the group of these venerated masters was the poet Rumi. It was Rumi’s belief that when we “see” the face of the/our beloved in a love relationship, we also see the face of the Divine – the face of love itself. And when Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson asked me, through the Iris Orchestra, for a double concerto to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary; I felt it fitting to allow the poems of Rumi, that had been so powerfully inspiring to me, to be a “guide” in the creation of such a work. It is not really crucial to know which poems form the basis for each of the four movements; rather, it is my belief that all that needs to be known about the music is in the music itself.
