Vibraphone* (bow needed), xylophone, crotales (bow needed), suspended cymbal*, small and large triangles 2. Tubular chimes, glockenspiel, vibraphone*, 2 bongos, suspended cymbal* (bow needed), large tamtam *Vibraphone and suspended cymbal may be shared, the vibraphone’s motor should be off

All trills and tremolandi are normal and even except where marked “uneven, sporadic, and frenetic.” Some ensemble players are asked to hum or sing. If they cannot do so they may tacet those bars. Grace notes come before the beat. For Piano: pizz refers to plucking the string inside the piano using the fleshy pads of the fingers. Pluck only one of the unison strings. The use of a plectrum is optional when plucking the louder notes; pizz is cancelled by ord. The narration begins in bar 18. The dynamics of the spoken text are marked, but are at the discretion of the speaker. Try not to speak where there are rests indicated in the bars. A CD of Wallace Stevens reading his poem is available from the publisher for use as a reference; please try to emulate his phrasing, timing and color. World premiere performance at Miller Theater in New York City on April 7, 2005, with Alan Pierson conducting members of the Alarm Will Sound Ensemble

The Poem That Took The Place Of A Mountain
Light the first light of evening In which we rest and, for small reason, think The world imagined is the ultimate good.
There it was, word for word, The poem that took the place of a mountain.
This is, therefore, the intensest rendezvous. It is in that thought that we collect ourselves, Out of all the indifference, into one thing: W ithin a single thing, a single shawl W rapped tightly round us, since we are poor, a warmth, A light, a power, the miraculous influence. Here, now, we forget each other and ourselves. W e feel the obscurity of an order, a whole, A knowledge, that which arranged the rendezvous. W ithin its vital boundary, in the mind. W e say God and the imagination are one... How high that highest candle lights the dark.
He breathed its oxygen, Even when the book lay turned in the dust of his table. It reminded him how he had needed A place to go to in his own direction, How he had recomposed the pines, Shifted the rocks and picked his way among clouds, For the outlook that would be right, W here he would be complete in an unexplained completion: The exact rock where his inexactness W ould discover, at last, the view toward which they had edged, W here he could lie and, gazing down at the sea, Recognize his unique and solitary home.
